Mountain Scenery
The majestic mountains have always held a special allure for me. From the snow-capped peaks that pierce the clouds to the verdant valleys blanketed in wildflowers, there is an undeniable beauty and serenity to be found in the embrace of these natural wonders. As I reflect on the numerous occasions I have ventured into the mountainous regions, a myriad of vivid memories come flooding back, each one a cherished testament to the profound impact these landscapes have had on my soul.
One particular experience that stands out vividly in my mind occurred during a hiking expedition through the Tian Shan mountain range in northwestern China. The journey began with a grueling ascent along a winding trail that seemed to defy gravity itself. With each labored step, the thin mountain air made breathing a conscious effort, yet the breathtaking vistas that unfolded before us were more than enough motivation to press on.
As we climbed higher, the world below gradually receded, replaced by a sea of jagged peaks that stretched as far as the eye could see. The sheer immensity of the mountains was humbling, a stark reminder of the insignificance of our existence in the grand scheme of nature's grandeur. Yet, paradoxically, it was this very realization that instilled within me a profound sense of interconnectedness with the universe.
The true majesty of the mountains, however, was not merely confined to their imposing stature. It was in the intricate details that the true beauty resided. The way the morning sunlight danced across the snow-capped ridges, casting a warm, golden glow that seemed to breathe life into the very rock itself. The way the icy streams cascaded down the mountainsides, their melodic babbling echoing through the valleys like nature's own symphony.
As we continued our ascent, the landscape gradually transformed, revealing a tapestry of diverse ecosystems that coexisted in perfect harmony. From the verdant alpine meadows adorned with a kaleidoscope of wildflowers to the stark, rocky outcroppings that defied the elements, each distinct environment offered its own unique beauty and sense of wonder.
It was during a momentary respite, as we sat upon a
sun-drenched boulder, that I truly appreciated the profound silence that enveloped the mountains. In the absence of the cacophony of modern life, the only sounds that permeated the air were the whispers of the wind and the occasional call of a soaring eagle. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility, a connection with something greater than myself that transcended the boundaries of the physical world.
Yet, even in their serenity, the mountains held a certain air of mystery and awe. The way the mist would roll in, obscuring the peaks and valleys in a hazy veil, only to dissipate moments later, revealing a world that seemed almost otherworldly. The way the shadows danced across the mountainsides as the sun made its celestial journey, casting ever-changing patterns of light and dark that were as captivating as they were ephemeral.
As the days passed, our journey took us through a tapestry of landscapes, each one more breathtaking than the last. From the towering glaciers that seemed to defy the laws of gravity to the hidden valleys where time itself seemed to stand still, every step was a revelation, a reminder of the incredible diversity and resilience of our planet.
It was during one of our final ascents that I truly came to appreciate the transformative power of the mountains. As we crested the final ridge, the world seemed to open up before us, revealing a panoramic vista that words simply cannot do justice. In that moment, all the hardships and challenges of the journey faded away, replaced by a profound sense of accomplishment and awe.
As I stood there, basking in the warmth of the sun and the majesty of the mountains, I realized that these landscapes were more than mere physical entities. They were living, breathing embodiments of the Earth's resilience, reminders of the enduring beauty and power of nature. It was in that moment that I felt a deep connection, not only with the mountains themselves but with the very essence of life itself.
In the months and years that followed, the memories of that journey have become indelibly etched into my consciousness, serving as a constant source of inspiration and wonder. Whenever I find myself feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of modern life, I need only close my eyes and transport myself back to those mountains, where the true simplicity and beauty of existence can be found.
The mountains have taught me many lessons, chief among them the importance of humility, patience, and perseverance. They have shown me that true beauty often lies in the smallest of details, and that the journey itself is just as important as the destination. Most importantly, they have instilled within me a deep reverence for the natural world and a profound appreciation for the delicate balance that sustains all life on this planet.
As I look towards the future, I know that the mountains will continue to beckon me, their siren call an irresistible force that draws me ever closer to their embrace. For it is in their grandeur and serenity that I find solace, a refuge from the chaos of the modern world, and a constant reminder of the enduring majesty of nature. The mountains are not mere landscapes; they are living, breathing embodiments of the Earth's resilience, and it is in their presence that I find the strength and inspiration to embrace life's challenges with a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation.

A Retrospective Look at Shandong's English Essay Exam
As an English major at Shandong University, the annual Bachelor's Degree English Test has been a looming presence throughout my four years of study. The essay portion, in particular, has been a subject of much anxiety and preparation. Each year, the prompts cover a wide range of thought-provoking topics that challenge us to demonstrate not only our English writing abilities but also our critical thinking and real-world knowledge.
Looking back on the past few years' essay questions, I'm struck by their diversity and depth. In my freshman year, we were asked to weigh in on the role of social media in modern society –a topic that was both timely and complex. Crafting a nuanced argument that balanced the pros and cons of platforms like Facebook and Twitter was no easy feat, but it forced me to really grapple with the implications of new technology.
The following year, the prompt centered on environmental conservation – a subject close to my heart. We had to propose realistic solutions for combating climate change and promoting sustainability on a global scale. Researching current initiatives and drawing insights from scientific data helped strengthen my stance, but it was also a valuable exercise in persuasive writing.
Junior year brought an intriguing question about the value of a liberal arts education in today's job market. As someone who has always appreciated the well-rounded perspective of the humanities, I relished the chance to advocate for their continued relevance. Citing examples of successful polymaths and making a case for the transferable skillset was immensely rewarding.
And just last year, we confronted the complicated topic of cultural appropriation in the arts. Unpacking the nuances of appreciation versus exploitation required a deft touch and an understanding of different cultural viewpoints. While challenging, it prepared me for the types of sensitive discussions I may need to navigate in my future career.
Through this diverse array of prompts, the Shandong English Test has consistently pushed me to think critically, do thorough research, structure logical arguments, and convey my ideas with clarity and precision. With each essay, my writing abilities have markedly improved – a welcomed result of the exam's rigor.
However, the benefits extend far beyond just honing linguistic skills. These essays have provided an opportunity for incredible

A Retrospective on Shandong's English Essay Exams
As a student in Shandong Province, the bachelor's degree English exam has been a looming presence throughout my university years. The essay portion, in particular, has struck fear into the hearts of many as we strive to articulate our thoughts coherently in a non-native tongue. However, looking back on the prompts from previous years, I've come to appreciate the breadth of topics we've been asked to tackle and the ways in which they've challenged us to think critically about the world around us.
One year, we were tasked with discussing the role of technology in modern society. At first, this seemed like a cliché topic that had been done to death. However, the more I delved into research and contemplated my own experiences with devices and apps, the more nuanced my perspective became. I realized that technology is neither an inherent good nor evil, but rather a powerful tool that can be used for constructive or destructive ends depending on the intentions and wisdom of its users.
In my essay, I explored how technological innovations have streamlined communication, expanded access to information and education, and facilitated ground-breaking scientific and
medical advancements. Concurrently, I grappled with the darker sides of our tech-centric world - the proliferation of misinformation, erosion of privacy, perpetuation of unhealthy habits like excessive screen time, and the ways in which AI and automation threaten to disrupt entire industries and exacerbate socioeconomic divides. Ultimately, I argued that we must strive to be judicious consumers and creators of technology who harness its potential for good while mitigating its risks and downsides.
Another memorable prompt centered on the concept of failure and how we can learn from our setbacks and mistakes. As an overachieving student, this one really resonated with me. I recounted feeling crushed after receiving a poor grade on a major assignment, only to realize that the experience forced me to identify gaps in my knowledge, confront my flaws, and develop more effective study strategies. I expounded on the pivotal role that failure has played in many influential figures' paths to success, from Michael Jordan being cut from his high school basketball team to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter manuscript being rejected dozens of times before finding a publisher.
Adopting a growth mindset and viewing roadblocks as opportunities for self-improvement rather than sources of
shame is immensely powerful. Additionally, I emphasized that constructively processing our missteps allows us to build resilience - the fortitude to persist through adversity. Resilience, as numerous psychologists assert, is one of the most reliable predictors of long-term wellbeing and achievement. While failure is painful in the moment, the lessons it imparts about humility, perseverance, and adopting a solutions-oriented outlook are invaluable.
Yet another thought-provoking prompt delved into ethical consumption in the modern age. With rampant labor exploitation, environmental degradation, and corporate greed increasingly coming to light, consumers are bearing more responsibility than ever before to make principled decisions about which companies to support. In my essay, I underscored the importance of researching brands' business practices, prioritizing ethically and sustainably produced goods, and applying economic pressure by shifting our spending to incentivize positive change.
However, I also acknowledged the harsh reality that ethical consumption is a privilege confined to the middle and upper classes in most cases. Those in poverty often have few options besides rock-bottom prices and lack the luxury of prioritizing
moral purity over meeting their basic needs. Systemic reforms to corporate regulations, worker protections, environmental policies, and the discriminatory policies and societal biases that perpetuate poverty must comprise a multi-pronged solution. But considering the tangible impacts of our purchasing decisions is a potent form of individual activism that should not be disregarded.
The sheer diversity of prompts on this exam has been incredibly enriching from an academic perspective. We've plumbed the depths of complex philosophical queries about the nature of truth, beauty, and morality. We've analyzed dynamics of interpersonal relationships, work-life balance, and
cross-cultural communication. We've contemplated humanity's role as stewards of the environment and our obligations to future generations. Each new prompt has expanded my perspectives and forced me to question ingrained assumptions.
More importantly, the intense written communication practice has proven immensely beneficial. Conveying Nuanced arguments, contextualizing ideas, anticipating counterpoints, providing compelling evidence, and synthesizing research into a cohesive piece of rhetoric are no easy feats in one's native language - let alone in English as a foreign learner. But these are
precisely the skills today's professionals require to thrive in our increasingly globalized world and knowledge-based economy.。
