You can find your favorite chocolate no matter where your mum hides it. You then think your sense of smell is pretty good? Sorry, what you should know is that people smell in black and white, while most animals smell in color. Some animals can tell smells that people don’t even know are there.
Have you ever seen a dog sniffing every little spot in a yard? It’s “reading” smells —almost like people read the newspaper. A dog can find lots of information from even tiny traces of smells.
Other animals may use their super sense of smell to talk with each other. Many kinds of animals make chemicals called pheromones(信息素). These chemicals send smell-messages to other animals of the same kind.
One smell may send a warning. Another smell may help attract a mate. Honey bees do lots of smell-talking all day long —about where the best flowers are, where the worst trouble is, and more. They make at least 36 different pheromones! Instead of talking with words, they talk with smells.
To see how another kind of pheromone works, imagine this: An ant wanders alone through a field in search of food. All of a sudden, it came across an old sandwich. It grabs a crumb. Then it heads back toward its anthill to let the other ants know about the find. Along the way, the ant wipes its abdomen(腹部) on the ground. This leaves a small chemical trail(痕迹).
The other ants will sniff and follow it to the tasty prize after they have been told by the returning ant that “Food is over there!” with a chemical smell.
So with a sniff, wildlife can have some wild conversations!

One of the biggest difficulties in verifying(验证) the 6th sense, which many scientists do not think exists, is that the harder you try to use it, the less the 6th sense seems to work. Also, the 6th sense seems to be very weak in humans. Actually, some animals seem to have a stronger 6th sense. There are several experiments you can try to see how good your 6th sense is .
Throwing a coin
When you throw a coin, it will come up heads 50% of the time and tails 50% of the time, An easy experiment is to try to predict whether the coin will come up heads or tails. Try to get yourself in a state of mind where you aren’t really trying. Sometimes you will get a feeling that you know what it will be. Remember that feeling and repeat it.
Staring at unsuspecting (无戒备心的) people
Surveys show about 90% of the population has experienced the feeling of being stared at and has turned around to see. You can try this on unsuspecting people to see if they sense something and then turn around. Although this can be fun, you must be careful that your behavior will not be unpleasant to another person.
Sensing subtle(不易察觉的) signals
An example is how some magicians can tell what cards a person is looking at by focusing on reflections on the person’s eyeballs. It appears as if the magician can read the person’s mind, but in fact, he is skilled at reading other signals.
With the 6th sense, you are trying to predict the future or something that is happening at a distance. Remember that the 6th sense seems to work best when the subject is not really trying. Don’t mix other factors. You must be careful that they don’t distort(扭曲) the results.
64. The first paragraph tells us that .
A. many people don’t have the so-called 6th sense
B. the 6th sense seems to work best when you are not trying
C. the 6th sense is highly developed in most animals
D. few people have an interest in verifying the 6th sense
65. When verifying your 6th sense by throwing a coin, you are advised to .
A. try hard to concentrate your attention
B. ignore your feelings during the experiment
C. keep a calm and casual state of mind
D. get another person to experiment with you
66. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. Humans’ subtle 6th sense.
B. Improving your 6th sense.
C. The 6th sense experiments.
D. The 6th sense in humans and animals.

The English language has been shaped by a number of other languages over centuries. Many English speakers know that Latin and German were two of the most important. What many people don’t realize is how much the French language has influenced English.
To begin with, I want to give a little bit of background about the other languages which shaped English. It was born out of the dialects of three German tribes(Angles, Jutes and Saxons) who settled in Britain in about 450 AD. When William the Conqueror became King of England in 1066, French took over as the language of the court, government, and culture for 300 years. Meanwhile, English was lowered to everyday uses. Since English was ignored by grammarians during this time, it took advantage of its lowly status to become a grammatically simpler language than French.
During the Norman occupation, about 10,000 French words were brought into English, some three-fourths of which are still in use today and can be found in every field. More than a third of all English words come directly or indirectly from French, and it’s estimated that English speakers who have never studied French already know 15,000 French words. You’ll find many examples in the later study.
English pronunciation owes a lot to French as well. Although Old English had the unvoiced fricative(摩擦音) sounds [f], [s], [ ] and [ ] , French influence helped to introduce the voiced fricative sounds [v], [z], [ð] and [ ].
Another rare but interesting French influence is in the word order of expressions like “secretary general” and “surgeon general”, where English has kept the “noun + adjective” word order typical in French, rather than the usual “adjective + noun” used in English.
67. After William the Conqueror controlled England, English .
A. was not allowed to be spoken in many places
B. remained popular in the upper class
C. was used often as a formal language
D. was spoken mainly by the common people
68. In the passage, the influence of French on English is not mentioned.
A. vocabulary
B. pronunciation
C. spelling
D. grammar
69. Compared with French, present-day English .
A. has a large vocabulary
B. has a simple grammar
C. is changing all the time
D. is often ignored by grammarians
70. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. Differences between French and English.
B. Influences of French on English.
C. Development of English.
D. Information on English study.
