Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those testes included people of different ages, from 12 to 83。
During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfast, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast。
The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effort than if he or she has no breakfast。
This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class. Contrary to what many people believe, people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will
probably lose more weight if you reduce other meals.

You may think there are no differences between British and American people. After all, they speak the same language, don’t they? If you ask a British or an American person, he will probably tell you that there are differences. And the differences are quite great.

What do Americans think of the British? Well, they think the British are cold and very unfriendly. They are not interested in success or in making lots of money。

Foulshan House is a fine, stone house of the 1790s。
It stands by the River Byre, in twenty—five hectares (公顷) of the best farmland in the southwest.
Smithson built the house, and the story goes back to George, the young Prince of Wales, who fell in love with the beautiful lady Kitty Wake, at one of the first Lord Foulsham’s wild woods parties. In the past many great men rode on the hills about Foulsham House, and many fine ladies took tea in the Green Room。
The house has eight bedrooms, three bathrooms, two living—rooms and a dining—room with a real Adam fire-place (壁炉). The
gentleman’s library has a view over the park and the river。
All rooms are light and airy, with good, high windows, and wood floors。
At the back of the house, where the third Lord Foulsham kept the horses, there is garage—space (停车场) for four cars. In many other ways, this house of the 1790s meets the needs of the 1990s.

When you take a walk in any city, you often see a lot of people walking dogs。
It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reason why people keep a dog has changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect(保护) themselves against attacks by other beasts. Later they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey his master。
For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dogs would not eat what was caught without permission.
These days people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks from animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery(抢劫). But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is a best friend when there are no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have no children。
For old couples, a dog is also their child when their natural children have grown up。
So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship。
