Today’s modern travelers are journeying further to explore Europe off the beaten track, and bringing home new skills and experience. Here are 4 ideas for an unusual holiday in Europe.
Volunteer in Transylvania
Transylvania is a top choice for an unusual European city break, with wonderfully preserved medieval(中世纪的) towns and castles that inspired the famous novel Dracula. In addition, you can take your unusual holiday experience even further by volunteering in Eastern Europe’s largest bear reserve and working with bears.
Teach skiing in Austria
Austria is one of Europe’s top skiing destinations. If you’re looking for a more unusual way to spend winter holiday, why not consider training to be a ski instructor there? You’ll gain a qualification that is recognized worldwide, and this program includes a guaranteed paid instructor job at a ski resort once you have finished your training.
Go diving in Spain
For a European holiday with a difference, take part in a plastic cleanup project based in Barcelona, help to empty plastic waste in the Mediterranean Sea and make a difference as you travel. This volunteer project combines diving with collecting plastic or other waste from the water, alongside giving you the chance to explore the city.

I first came to Berwickshire for a job-to be the Ranger for the Berwickshire Marine Reserve.I was then Senior Ranger for St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve and I set up my own business, In Our Nature, offering wildlife journeys, walks, talks and courses in 2020. There’s so much I love about Berwickshire. Its stunning scenery. Its variety of landscapes and habitats and range of amazing wildlife, both above and below the water. Its friendly people. In places you can feel like you are a million miles from anywhere, when in reality you’re just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh.
The thing that supports everything on the Berwickshire Coast is its varied and fascinating geology(地质).The jewel in the crown is Siccar Point. With its world-famous non-conformity(均变),it’s considered the birthplace of modern geology. The geology not only shapes the landscape, but it also impacts on the wildlife, forming varied habitats from steep sheltered valleys and towering cliffs to sheltered sandy bays.
There’s nothing I like more than being out in nature and sharing my passion with others, so starting up In Our Nature was a no brainer. In the warmer months I offer tours on land and sea to help folk enjoy the amazing wildlife and scenery of the Berwickshire Coast. In the darker months my online courses help people learn about wildlife in the hope that it will increase their enjoyment of the marine and coastal environments they spend time in.
My favourite spot on the Berwickshire Coast has got to be a place called Petticowick. The views up the coast and inland to the Mire Loch are second to none. It’s a place where you can marvel at geology which covers unimaginable periods of time. You can listen to and watch thousands of seabirds that return to the cliffs to breed each spring. Or witness all the amazing activity of the breeding seal colony on the beach below during the early winter. 4.Why did the author go to Berwickshire?
A.To do sightseeing.
B.To make friends.
C.To work in a reserve.
D.To study wildlife.
5.What do the underlined words “The jewel in the crown" mean?
A.The highest part.
B.The most attractive part.
C.The valueless part.
D.The advanced part.
6.How does the author help people get to know wildlife in darker months?
A.By providing online courses.
B.By sharing her experiences.
C.By offering tours on land.
D.By organizing trips to the sea.
7.What can we learn from the text?
A.Modern geology needs further study.
B.Petticowick should be well preserved.
C.People should not take advantage of nature.
D.The author is enthusiastic about Berwickshire.
Going against the tide of flocking to well-known yet generally jam-packed tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known resorts to seek unique, relaxed holiday experiences. “Reverse tourism” has been a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
Large numbers of vacationers, especially young professionals who long to escape busy city life, tend to shun popular holiday destinations in order to get off the beaten track and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations, where they often have to afford pricey tickets, meals and hotel stays.
“Tourism used to be about sightseeing. Now it is about experiences,” Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy, told Beijing Daily. Lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” and “standardized” as developed ones and are able to offer more authentic experiences and natural encounters, according to social media posts. And unlike popular destinations, some underexplored places with little online information can offer more surprises.
COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. A traveler has no way of knowing what lies ahead before departure, be it a perfect holiday or one interrupted by a sudden outbreak. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
“The rise of reverse tourism is hardly a bad thing,” said an opinion piece in Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market, the article explains. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market and is an opportunity for growth comparable to the camping economy. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to develop the potential of underrated, lesser-known destinations.
8.What does the underlined word “shun” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.flock.B.avoid.C.seek.D.deny
9.Why do some vacationers choose less-traveled places?
A.Because they are not fond of socializing.
B.Because they don’t want to spend their money on tickets.
C.Because traveling to less populated areas is the only choice during the pandemic. D.Because it can offer them more real experiences.
10.What is the impact of reverse tourism on the tourism market?
A.It dominated the tourism market.
B.It leads to a decline in the tourism market.
C.It makes well-known attractions less popular.
D.It creates more chances for the tourism market.
11.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.More people get off the beaten track for relaxing break.
B.A large number of holidaymakers in China oppose reverse tourism.
C.Some ways to make less-known destinations popular.
D.Reverse tourism has great prospects recently.
From writing Shakespeare-style poetry to making music, ChatGPT has amazed the world since its launch in late 2022 by the US-based company Open AI. It even passed several
law exams in four courses at the University of Minnesota, US, according to CNN.
The AI program can answer questions on a whole host of topics, and write essays, stories and any other written texts you can think of. It does this by drawing on information collected from a large corpus (语料库) of text data.
What makes ChatGPT so impressive? As Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI said in an interview with Forbes, “it’s not actually fundamentally new technology that made this (ChatGPT) have a moment.”
According to MIT Technology Review, ChatGPT is based on GPT-3, a large language model. Because texts are more complicated than the meaning of every word combined, language models require a type of neural network (神经网络) that can make sense of texts.
One breakthrough behind today’s model is a network called Transformer, which was invented by Google researchers in 2017. The neural network can infer word meanings by tracking where the word appears in a sentence. Transformer can therefore capture the meaning of texts more accurately.
The GPT models built by OpenAI combined Transformer with unsupervised learning, meaning that the models can learn by themselves without being told what to look at. ChatGPT can now generate human-like responses instantly due to the large scale (规模) of texts it learned from.
“One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities,” Michael Wooldridge at the Alan Turing Institute in London, UK, told The Guardian. This means that ChatGPT doesn’t know the truth about the world — it learns information from various resources but it cannot decide what is true or false.
Some argue that ChatGPT will be used to generate fake news, spread falsities, or be used for ill purposes. As for education, many US schools recently banned students from using ChatGPT on school networks because students began to use it as a shortcut for essays. 12.How does ChatGPT work?
A.By making use of its large collection of texts.
B.By gathering different information.
C.By categorizing information by theme.
D.By simplifying complicated texts.
13.What is the new technology behind ChatGPT?
A.Its neural network can capture texts quickly.
B.Its Transformer can produce human-like responses instantly.
C.Its language model can track words accurately.
D.Its model combines Transformer with unsupervised learning.
14.What is one of the biggest problems with ChatGPT, according to Wooldridge?
A.It processes information slowly.B.It learns from limited resources.
C.It can generate false answers.D.It can be used for ill purposes. 15.Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.ChatGPT writes miracles B.ChatGPT meets challenges
C.An AI language model assists human D.ChatGPT — a bridge to future

What to Do when Working with Disliked Ones
In life, we may always work together with someone because of a mutual benefit. It sounds great, except for one thing: You don’t like your cooperator because he is selfish. In fact, you don’t have to like him, but you’d be smart to work with him. 16 The typical advice you may hear is to just do whatever business you need to do with them and move on. 17 And the biggest problem is that if you don’t like someone, chances are that they know it, which will make them dislike you. Thus, it turns out to be an impossible strategy.
So, if avoiding them is a losing strategy, what should you do?
18 Maybe you think they are greedy or selfish. Then ask yourself this question: can you yourself be greedy or selfish? You really don’t like that part of yourself, right? You may not like them because they remind you of something you don’t like about yourself.
Then working with people who you don’t like can become much more interesting, because getting to know them, and accepting the parts of them you don’t like, is actually getting to know yourself and accepting the parts of yourself you don’t like. It means you use them to understand yourself better. What is it about them that you don’t like? 19 This is a game, and you win by finding that hated behavior in yourself.
Humans are very complex-we have both good and bad traits in ourselves. That’s the key to sharing the suffering of others. 20 .
A.After you know it, you will actually begin to like people you never liked before.
B.Then, consider how your answers might be a reflection of yourself.
C.Consider, for a moment, the reason why you don’t like someone.
D.Thus you can influence your partner with your own actions.
E.So how do you work with someone you don’t like?
F.You can turn to your partner’s leaders for help.
G.But the people we don’t like drive us crazy.
