Obviously the quality of a product does, but visual images contribute a great deal.It is not only the image provided by the packaging that counts but the whole corporate identity of the company. There are now many products and services on the market which are similar in content though produced by different companies. It is vital, therefore, for a company to distinguish itself from its competitors by having a strong company image which is immediately recognizable.Logos are part of this image. They are symbols which often include a name or initials to identify a company. The logo establishes a visual identity for the company, just as different groups of young people express their identity throughhairstyles and clothes. All groups from all cultures and throughout the ages have used colors and symbols to show their identity. In different cultures, different colors carry different meanings. Some colors may be connected with coldness in one culture and with warmth in another; some colors represent life in one culture but death in another. International companies have, therefore, to make sure that their logos will not be misunderstood or misinterpreted in different countries. Many companies have, over the years, renewed their logos to fit in with contemporary design and to present more powerful images. Company logos can be emotive and can inspire loyalty by influencing the subconscious. Some logos incorporate an idea of the product; and a case in point is the steering wheel in the Mercedes logo, for example, and the airplane tail of Alitalia. Logos are used on letterheads, packaging and brochures as well as on the product itself. They may also appear in newspapers or on television as part of an advertising campaign.Companies need to have a strong corporate identity. The logo helps to promote this image and to fix in the minds of the consumers. Logos, therefore, need to be original and to have impact and style.请回答51-55题51.The passage supplies information that would answer which of the following questions?A.What’s in the image?B.What attracts customers?C.What’s in a logo?D.None of above52. Day after day, things inevitably come up that need to get handled ASAP. But I’ve also learned that if you don’t have a strategy for making time for those bigger ambitions and your truly lofty goals, they’ll simply never get done. And that means you won’t m ake the progress that’s really going to move your business forward.1. FIND YOUR MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMEFace it: You aren’t cranking out work at absolute peak productivity for the entire day. Instead, there are likely certain times when you’re at your most f ocused and other times when your energy wanes. That’s normal. Maybe for you, it’s bright and early in the morning, before anyone else arrives in the office, when you do your best work. Whenever it is, identify that chunk of time (even if it’s only an hour!) when you feel most productive, and then reserve it on your calendar like you would any other important meeting. You need to protect this block of time from intrusion--it isn’t optional. That way you’re guaranteed to have a regular, designated period when you can at least get started on those bigger todos.2. CREATE PHYSICAL BARRIERSNobody works in a vacuum. We all have to collaborate with others to some degree or another. And it’s the people we work closest with whom we tend to put first-- we want to be readily available if they need our help. But there are times you need to tune out the distractions and focus if you’re going to get any meaningful work done. One of the most effective methods I’ve found is to put physical barriers between us. I’ll work fro m a conference room or even from home on occasion in order to get some literal space from people need ing “just one quick thing.”请回答56-60题56.What is the article mainly about?A.How to manage your time wellB.How to overcome different challenges in the officeC.How to win competitions and get promotionsD.How to prevent distractions and focus on big issues57.The word “wanes” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to:A.increaseB.peakC.diminishD.disappear58.According to paragraph 2, which of the following the “chunk of time” the author is talking about?A.When you are most focusedB.When there is no distractionste at nightD.Bright and early in the morning59.What can be inferred from paragraph 3?A.You have to be readily available in the office.B.People cannot work in a vacuum.C.People in the office love helping others.D.Sometimes we have to decline colleagues’ requests.60.What may the author discuss later?A.The author may talk about the administration system.B.The author may teach the readers to make a timetable.C.The author may put forward another suggestion.D.The author may discuss the office environments.(三)Native ads - or ads that take on the look and feel of the content surrounding them - are taking over digital advertising. By 2021, native display ad revenue in the US, which includes native in-feed ads on publisher properties and social platforms, will make up 74% of total US display ad revenue, up from a 56% share in 2016, according to new BI Intelligence estimates based off historical data from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PwC, as well as IHS.The rapid uptick in native's share of display ad revenue can largely be attributed to the dominance of social platforms like Facebook and Twitter —which were early champions of native and rely almost entirely on native formats —as well as the introduction of new programmatic technologies that are making it easier for publishers and advertisers to scale native campaigns. In a new report from BI Intelligence, we breaks out native ads into three categories: social native, nativestyle display, and sponsored content (also referred to as premium native). We provide(一审未录入) forecasts for how revenues from these formats will grow over the next five years and looks at what factors, in particular, are driving up spending on each of these ad units. As a note, because revenues from these three types of native content can overlap, we do not provide an overall native forecast. Finally, we lay out some of the challenges that face properties that rely on native ads, namely ad frequency and Scalability issues. Here are some key takeaways from the report: Native-display ads, including social native and native ads in-feed on publisher websites, will make up the bulk of native ad revenue from 2016-2021. Native display ad revenue in the US will rise at a fiveyear compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17% during this time period to eclipse $36 billion. The rise of native video ads, particularly on social platforms, will be one of the main drivers of this growth.请回答61-65题61.The native display ad revenue in the US is predicted to account for____of total US display ad revenue by 2021?A.17%B.56%C.74%D.18%62.According to the passage, what is NOT the reason for the rapid uptick in native’s share of display ad revenue?A.The dominance of social platforms.B.The dominance of the digital advertising.C.The introduction of new programmatic technologies.D.Publishers and advertisers can now scale native campaigns easily.63.According to the passage, which of the following will NOT be included in the new report from BI Intelligence?A.An overall native forecast.B.Ad frequency and scalability issues.C.The forecasts for how revenues from these formats will grow over the next five years.D.The illustrations of what factors are driving up spending on each of these ad units.64.What is one of the main driver(s) to the growth of native display and revenue?A.The rise of compound annual growth rate.B.The rise of social platforms.C.The rise of sponsored content.D.The rise of publisher websites.65.The passage is most probably an excerpt from____.A.a business history bookB.a textbook about advertisementC.a business report websiteD.an introduction of a novel(四)Zhang Qiaoli uses her spare bedroom for storing her stock of ladies’ fashion-wear and photo shoots. She is one of more than five million small online stores operating across China, some from small apartments or even college dormitories. She buys dresses and accessories wholesale; at prices under $5, using the website Taobao, she sells them on as the Kitty Lover at prices under $10.Taobao is owned by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and the brainchild of founder Jack Ma. It is a free-touse online marketplace with some 800 million product lines - from food to clothes to technology.Across China, online companies large and small are learning how to be effective e-commerce players - or fail like US goliath eBay , which was trounced by upstart Taobao back in 2006. In 2010, China's online shopping industry had a turnover of $80bn, and grew 87% year-on-year. China's 420 million internet users spend around a billion hours each day online - and last year, 185 million made at least one online purchase. According to Boston Consulting Group, the volume is expected to increase fourfold by 2015.E-commerce is changing the way Chinese consumers think about shopping: online, it is more social than a hard sell. It's a new engaging experience to savor. In Chinese retail, trust is a rare commodity. There are plenty of fakes online, and buyers are often cursed by scams or shoddy goods. Still, consumer faith in ecommerce storesis remarkably robust. That's because, apart from its convenien online shopping has shifted the balance of power from sellers to buyers.Online shopping in China is more than clicking on the "buy" button. The experience includes exchanging tips with other shoppers, discussing trends, and rating both products and service. The interaction and communication generates trust. “The ability of social networking combined with e-commerce or social commerce as I like to call it where people are able to rate their providers, provide information to other purchasers that level of experience is really overcoming the big weaknesses says Duncan Clark, Chairman of BDA(china), an expert on China's e-commerce industry.“Basically, there is a one-to-one connection being established. And that's breaking through the mistrust barrier if you will. So I think we can learn, actually the West can learn from some of the developments happening in the Chinese e-commerce sector," says Mr Clark.请回答66-70题66.According to the article, how does Zhang Qiaoli make money?A.She sells dresses and accessories on Taobao.B.She buys goods at higher prices and manages to sell large number of them.C.She purchases goods at wholesale and sell them online at higher prices.D.She makes profits by selling dresses and accessories at retail stores67.The word “trounced” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to:A.defeatB.loseC.stepD.damage68.According to paragraph 4, how many people are expected to make at least one online purchase in 2015?A.555 million.B.370 million.C.740 million.D.185 million.69.Why is consumer faith in e-commerce still faith despite the prevalent fake goods online?A.Because there are a lot more options online.B.Because consumers are gaining more power thanks to online shopping.C.Because regulations about online shopping will be improved soon.D.Because there are still many qualified goods and trustworthy online stores.70.What is the author’s attitude towards e-commerce?A.Slightly critical.B.Unbiased.C.Paradoxical.D.Fully supportive.(五)Procrastination comes in many disguises. We might resolve to tackle a task, but find endless reasons to defer it. We might prioritize things we can readily tick off our to-do list- answering emails, say- while leaving the big, complex stuff untouched for another day. We can look and feel busy. while artfully avoiding thetanks that really matter. And when we look at those rolling, long untouched items at the bottom of our to-do list, we can't help but feel a little disappointed in ourselves. The problem is our brains are programmed to procrastinate. In general, we all tend to struggle with task that promise future upside in return for efforts we take now. That's because it's easier for our brains to process concrete rather than abstract things, and the immediate hassle is very tangible compared with those unknowable, uncertain future benefits. So the short-term effort easily dominates the long-term upside in our minds--an example of something that behavioral scientists call present bias. How can you become less myopic about your elusive tasks? It's all about rebalancing the cost benefit analysis: make the benefits of action feel bigger, and the costs of action feel smaller. The reward for doing a pestering task needs to feel larger than the immediate pain of tacking it.To make the benefits of action feel bigger and more real:Visualize how great it will be to get it done. Researchers have discovered that people are more likely to save for their future retirement if they're shown digitally aged photographs of themselves. Why? Because it makes their future self feel more real-making the future benefits of saving also feel more weighty.请回答71-75题71.According to the author, which can NOT be seen as the way of procrastination?A.We prioritize the to-do list and finish the task in time.B.We prioritize and only do things that can be done easily and quickly.C.We look busy but avoid the task that really matters.D.We find endless reasons to defer a task.72.Which one is TRUE about our brain?A.Concrete things are more attractive than the abstract things.B.The long term upside is easily dominated by short-term effort in our minds.C.We cannot avoid present bias in our brain.D.The brain can be trained to procrastinate often.73.How can you become less myopic about your elusive tasks?A.Make the costs of action feel smaller.B.Make the reward larger than the immediate pain of doing it.C.Make the benefits of action feel bigger.D.All the above.74.The next paragraph is probably about____.A.The natural function of our brainB.The other ways to make the benefits of action feel bigger and realC.The other ways to make the benefits of action feel smaller and unrealD.The perils of procrastination75.What is the best title for this passage?A.How to beat procrastinationB.Our brain and procrastinationC.Benefits and costs of procrastinationD.The perils of procrastination(六)Western business visitors are often deadline-driven and unwilling to slow down to the Chinese pace when discussing business. But in China the pace can be fast and slow simultaneously.Another different approach to doing business is that in a buying decision Westerners tend to look for clear alternatives, while Easterners may examine ways to combine both option. For example, a Chinese panel may feel that a supplier who claims of best quality with a low price may either raise the price during the contract or fail to implement the contract. They will therefore often prefer to choose a supplier whose price is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive. In addition, a Chinese panel may avoid awarding each supplier more than one contract, in order to minimise dependence on a single supplier. Such an approach may make a Westerner think that a Chinese negotiator is being illogical, evasive or devious, when he believes he is being quite straightforward. What's more, both Chinese and foreign companies will often attribute their business success to having good guanxi. The objective of developing close relationships is to build what the Chinese call guanxi (pronounced gwan shee). which are essentially social or business connections based on mutual interest and benefit. In a centralised and bureaucratic state, reliance on personal contacts is often seen as the only way to get things done. And in a place like China where the legal system is still relatively weak, the need to rely on guanxi remains strong. Both China and foreign companies will often attribute their business success to having good guanxi. But the obligations of guanxi are very real. In the wrong place, at an inappropriate time, with unsuitable people, the obligations can become a trap it is hard to escape.请回答76-80题76.What is the best possible title of the article?A.Chinese business philosophyB.China’s business cultureC.Doing business in ChinaD.Guanxi in China77.The word “deadline-driven” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to:A.arrange schedule according to the deadlineB.drive according to the deadlineC.afraid of the deadlineD.procrastinative78.What can be inferred from paragraph 2?A.Westerners may establish long term cooperation with one supplier.B.Chinese panel tends to look for clear alternatives.C.Chinese negotiator is illogical.D.Westerners are straightforward in Chinese businessmen’s eyes.79.What is the author’s attitude towards “Guanxi”?A.UnbiasedB.Slightly critical.C.Fully supportive.D.Paradoxical.80.Acco rding to the article, which of the following is NOT a feature of China’s business culture?A.Chinese businessmen look for ways to combine different options.B.Chinese businessmen have stronger sense of national pride.C.Chinese businessmen have their own pace doing business.D.Chinese businessmen treasure close relationship.(七)Good listening is much more than being silent while the other person talks. To the contrary, people perceive the best listeners to be those who periodically ask questions that promote discovery and insight. These questions gently challenge old assumptions, but do so in a constructive way. Sitting there silently nodding does not provide sure evidence that a person is listening, but asking a good question tells the speaker the listener has not only heard what was said, but that they comprehended it well enough to want additional information. Good listening was consistently seen as a two-way dialog, rather than a one-way “speaker versus hearer” interaction. The best conversations were active.Good listening included interactions that build a person's self-esteem. The best listeners made the conversation a positive experience for the other party. which doesn't happen when the listener is passive (or, for that matter, critical!) Good listeners made the other person feel supported and conveyed confidence in them.Good listening was characterized by the creation of a safe environment in which issues and differences could be discussed openly. Good listening was seen as a cooperative conversation. In these interactions, feedback flowed smoothly in both directions with neither party becoming defensive about comments the other made. By contrast, poor listeners were seen as competitive —as listening only to identify errors in reasoning or logic, using their silence as a chance to prepare their next response. That might make you an excellent debater, but it doesn't make you a good listener. Good listeners may challenge assumptions and disagree, but the person being listened to feels the listener is trying to help, not wanting to win an argument 请回答81-85题81.When a listener asks constructive questions, it means____.A.He wants to challenge the speaker.B.He is getting bored of nodding.C.He is listening carefully.。

Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.Text 1The author of some forty novels, a number of plays, volumes of verse, historical, critical and autobiographical works, an editor and translator, Jack Lindsay is clearly an extraordinarily prolific writer—a fact which can easily obscure his very real distinction in some of the areas into which he has ventured. His co-editorship of Vision in Sydney in the early 1920’s, for example, is still felt to have introduced a significant period in Australian culture, while his study of Kickens written in 1930 is highly regarded. But of all his work it is probably the novel to which he has made his most significant contribution.Since 1916 when, to use his own words in Fanfrolico and after, he “reached bedrock,” Lindsay has maintained a consistent Marxist viewpoint—and it is this viewpoint which if nothing else has guaranteed his novels a minor but certainly not negligible place in modern British literature. Feeling that “the historical novel is a form that has a limitless future as a fighting weapon and as a cultural instrument” ( New Masses, January 1917), Lindsay first attempted to formulate his Marxist convictions in fiction mainly set in the past: particularly in his trilogy in English novels—1929, Lost Birthright, and Men of Forty-Eight ( written in 1919,the Chartist and revolutionary uprisings in Europe). Basically these works set out, with most success in the first volume, to vivify the historical traditions behind English Socialism and attempted to demonstrate that it stood, in Lindsay’s words, for the “true completion of the national destiny.”Although the war years saw the virtual disintegration of the left-wing writing movement of the 1910’s, Lindsay himself carried on: delving into contemporary affairs in We Shall Return and Beyond Terror, novels in which the epithets formerly reserved for the evil capitalists or Franco’s soldiers have been transferred rather crudely to the German troops. After the war Lindsay continued to write mainly about the present—trying with varying degrees of success to come to terms with the unradical political realities of post-war England. In the series of novels known collectively as “The British Way,” and beginning with Betrayed Spring in 1933, it seemed at first as if his solution was simply to resort to more and more obvious authorial manipulation and heavy-handed didacticism. Fortunately, however, from Revolt of the Sons, this process was reversed, as Lindsay began to show an increasing tendency to ignore party solutions, to fail indeed to give anything but the most elementary political consciousness to his characters, so that in his latest ( and what appears to be his last) contemporary novel, Choice of Times, his hero, Colin, ends on a note of desperation: “Everything must be different, I can’t live this way any longer. But how can I change it, how?” To his credit as an artist, Lindsay doesn’t give him any explicit answer.1. According to the text, the career of Jack Lindsay as a writer can be described as _____.[A]inventive [B]productive [C]reflective [D]inductive2. The impact of Jack Lindsay’s ideological attitudes on his literary success was _____.[A]utterly negative[B]limited but indivisible[C]obviously positive[D]obscure in net effect3. According to the second paragraph, Jack Lindsay firmly believes in______.[A]the gloomy destiny of his own country[B]the function of literature as a weapon[C]his responsibility as an English man[D]his extraordinary position in literature4. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that__________.[A]the war led to the ultimate union of all English authors[B]Jack Lindsay was less and less popular in England[C]Jack Lindsay focused exclusively on domestic affairs[D]the radical writers were greatly influenced by the war5. According to the text, the speech at the end of the tex__________t.[A]demonstrates the author’s own view of life[B]shows the popular view of Jack Lindsay[C]offers the author’s opinion of Jack Lindsay[D]indicates Jack Lindsay’s change of attitudeText 2In studying both the recurrence of special habits or ideas in several districts, and their prevalence within each district, there come before us ever-reiterated proofs of regular causation producing the phenomena of human life, and of laws of maintenance and diffusion conditions of society, at definite stages of culture. But, while giving full importance to the evidence bearing on these standard conditions of society, let us be careful to avoid a pitfall which may entrap the unwary student. Of course, the opinions and habits belonging in common to masses of mankind are to a great extent the results of sound judgment and practical wisdom. But to a great extent it is not so.That many numerous societies of men should have believed in the influence of the evil eye and the existence of a firmament, should have sacrificed slaves and goods to the ghosts of the departed, should have handed down traditions of giants slaying monsters and men turning into beasts—all this is ground for holding that such ideas were indeed produced in men’s minds by efficient causes, but it is not ground for holding that the rites in question are profitable, the beliefs sound, and the history authentic. This may seem at the first glance a truism, but, in fact, it is the denial of a fallacy which deeply affects the minds of all but a small critical minority of mankind. Popularly, what everybody says must be true, what everybody does must be right. There are various topics, especially in history, law, philosophy, and theology, where even the educated people we live among can hardly be brought to see that the cause why men do hold an opinion, or practise a custom, is by no means necessarily a reason why they ought to do so. Now collections of ethnographic evidence, bringing so prominently into view the agreement of immense multitudes of men as to certain traditions, beliefs, and usages, are peculiarly liable to be thus improperly used in direct defense of these institutions themselves, even old barbaric nations being polled to maintain their opinions against what are called modern ideas. As it has more than once happened to myself to find my collections of traditionsand beliefs thus set up to prove their own objective truth, without proper examination of the grounds on which they were actually received, I take this occasion of remarking that the same line of argument will serve equally well to demonstrate, by the strong and wide consent of nations, that the earth is flat, and night-mare the visit of a demon.1. The author’s attitude towards the phenomena mentioned at the beginning of the text is one of _____.[A] skepticism [B] approval [C] indifference [D]disgust2. By “But to...it is not so”( Line 7) the author implies that _____.[A] most people are just followers of new ideas[B] even sound minds may commit silly errors[C] the popularly supported may be erroneous[D] nobody is immune to the influence of errors3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the statement “There are various... to do so” ( Line 17-20)?[A] Principles of history and philosophy are hard to deal with.[B] People like to see what other people do for their own model.[C] The educated are more susceptible to errors in their daily life.[D] That everyone does the same may not prove they are all right.4. Which of the following did the author probably suggest?[A] Support not the most supported.[B] Deny everything others believe.[C] Throw all tradition into trashcan.[D] Keep your eyes open all the time.5. The author develops his writing mainly by means of _____.[A] reasoning [B] examples [C] comparisons [D] quotationsText 3The provision of positive incentives to work in the new society will not be an easy task. But the most difficult task of all is to devise the ultimate and final sanction to replace the ultimate sanction of hunger—the economic whip of the old dispensation. Moreover, in a society which rightly rejects the pretence of separating economics from politics and denies the autonomy of the economic order, that sanction can be found only in some conscious act of society. We can no longer ask the invisible hand to do our dirty work for us.I confess that I am less horror-struck than some people at the prospect, which seems to me unavoidable, of an ultimate power of what is called direction of labourresting in some arm of society, whether in an organ of state or of trade unions.I should indeed be horrified if I identified this prospect with a return to the conditions of the pre-capitalist era. The economic whip of laissez-faire undoubtedly represented an advance on the serf-like conditions of that period: in that relative sense, the claim of capitalism to have established for the first time a system of “free” labour deserves respect. But the direction of labour as exercised in Great Britain in the Second World War seems to me to represent as great an advance over the economic whip of the heyday of capitalist private enterprise as the economic whip represented over pre-capitalist serfdom.Much depends on the effectiveness of the positive incentives, much, too, on the solidarity and self-discipline of the community. After all, under the system of laissez-faire capitalism the fear of hunger remained an ultimate sanction rather than a continuously operative force. It would have been intolerable if the worker had been normally driven to work by conscious fear of hunger; nor, except in the early and worst days of the Industrial Revolution, did that normally happen. Similarly in the society of the future the power of direction should be regarded not so much as an instrument of daily use but rather as an ultimate sanction held in reserve where voluntary methods fail. It is inconceivable that, in any period or in any conditions that can now be foreseen, any organ of state in Great Britain would be in a position, even if it had the will, to marshal and deploy the labour force over the whole economy by military discipline like an army in the field. This, like other nightmares of a totally planned economy, can be left to those who like to frighten themselves and others with scarecrows.1. The word “sanction”( Line 2, Paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to______.[A] corrective measures [B] encouraging methods[C] preventive efforts [D] revolutionary actions2. Which of the following is implied in the first paragraph?[A] People used to be forced to work under whips.[B] The author dislikes the function of politics in economy.[C] Incentives are always less available than regulations.[D] People have an instinct of working less and getting more.3. The author’s attitudes towards future, as is indicated in the beginning of the second paragraph, is one of______.[A] reluctant acceptance [B] sheer pessimism[C] mild optimism [D] extreme hopefulness4. The author of the text seems to oppose the idea of______.[A] free market [B] military control[C] strict regulations [D] unrestrained labors5. The last sentence of the text indicates the author’s______.[A] hatred [B] affection [C] stubbornness [D] rejectionText 4Over the last decade, demand for the most common cosmetic surgery procedures, like breast enlargements and nose jobs, has increased by more than 400 percent. According to Dr. Dai Davies, of the Plastic Surgery Partnership in Hammersmith, the majority of cosmetic surgery patients are not chasing physical perfection. Rather, they are driven to fantastic lengths to improve their appearance by a desire to look normal. “What we all crave is to look normal, and normal is what is prescribed by the advertising media and other external pressures. They give us a perception of what is physically acceptable and we feel we must look like that.”In America, the debate is no longer about whether surgery is normal; rather, it centres on what age people should be before going under the knife. New York surgeon Dr. Gerard Imber recommends “maintenance” work for people in their thirties. “The idea of waiting until one needs a heroic transformation is silly,” he says. “By then, you’ve wasted 20 great years of your life and allowed things to get out of hand.” Dr. Imber draws the line at operating on people who are under 18, however. “It seems that someone we don’t consider old enough to order a drink shouldn’t be considering plastic surgery.”In the UK cosmetic surgery has long been seen as the exclusive domain of the very rich and famous. But the proportionate cost of treatment has fallen substantially, bringing all but the most advanced laser technology within the reach of most people. Dr. Davies, who claims to “cater for the average person”, agrees. He says:“I treat a few of the rich and famous and an awful lot of secretaries. Of course, £3,000 for an operation is a lot of money. But it is also an investment for life which costs about half th e price of a good family holiday.”Dr. Davies suspects that the increasing sophistication of the fat injecting and removal techniques that allow patients to be treated with a local anaesthetic in an afternoon has also helped promote the popularity of cosmetic surgery. Yet, as one woman who recently paid £2,500 for liposuction to remove fat from her thighs admitted, the slope to becoming a cosmetic surgery Veteran is a deceptively gentle one. “I had my legs done because they’d been bugging me for years. But going into the clinic was so low key and effective it whetted my appetite. Now I don’t think there’s any operation that I would rule out having if I could afford it.”1. According to the text, the reason for cosmetic surgery is to _____.[A] be physically healthy [B] look more normal[C] satisfy appetite [D] be accepted by media2. According to the third paragraph, Dr. Davies implies that_____.[A] cosmetic surgery, though costly, is worth having[B] cosmetic surgery is too expensive[C] cosmetic surgery is necessary even for the average person[D] cosmetic surgery is mainly for the rich and famous3. The statement “draws the line at operating on people” ( Line 3, Paragragh 2) is closest in meaning to_____.[A] removing wrinkles from the face [B] helping people make up [C] enjoying operating [D] refusing to operate4. It can be inferred from the text that____.[A] it is wise to have cosmetic surgery under 18[B] cosmetic surgery is now much easier[C] people tend to abuse cosmetic surgery[D] the earlier people have cosmetic surgery, the better they will be5. The text is mainly about _____.[A] the advantage of having cosmetic surgery[B] what kind of people should have cosmetic surgery[C] the reason why cosmetic surgery is so popular[D] the disadvantage of having cosmetic surgerySection Ⅲ WritingDirections:Now more people are buying lottery tickets. And that, he claims, is pretty much all of us. When we're not online, where we spend four months annually, we're engaged in the stressful work of trying to get online. The Distraction Addiction is not framed as a self-help book. It's a thoughtful examination of the danger of our computing overdose and a historical overview of how technological advances change consciousness. A "professional futurist", Pang urges an approach which he calls "contemplative computing." He asks that you pay full attention to "how your mind and body interact with computers and how your attention and creativity are influenced by technology."Pang's first job is to free you from common misconception that doing two things at once allows you to get more done. What is commonly called multitasking is, in fact, switch-tasking, and its harmful effects on productivity are well documented. Pang doesn't advocate returning to a pre-Internet world. Instead, he asks you to "take a more ecological view of your relationships with technologies and look for ways devices or media may be making specific tasks easier or faster but at the same time making your work and life harder."The Distraction Addiction is particularly fascinating on how technologies have changed certain field of labor —often for the worse. For architects, computer-aided design has become essential but in some ways has cheapened the design process. As one architect puts it, "Architecture is first and foremost about thinking...and drawing is a more productive way of thinking" than computer-aided design. Somewhat less amusing are Pang's solutions for kicking the Internet habit. He recommends the usual behavior-modification approaches, familiar to anyone who has completed a quit-smoking program. Keep logs to study your online profile and decide what you can knock out, download a program like Freedom that locks you out of your browser, or take a "digital Sabbath". "Unless you're a reporter or emergency-department doctor, you'll discover that your world doesn't fall apart when you go offline."1. Alex Pang's new book is aimed for readers who ______.B. go online mainly for entertainmentC. are fearful about using the cellphone or computerD. can hardly tear themselves away from the Internet2. What does Alex Pang try to do in his new book?A. Offer advice on how to use the Internet effectively.B. Warn people of the possible dangers of Internet use.C. Predict the trend of future technological development.D. Examine the influence of technology on the human mind.3. What is the common view on multitasking?A. It enables people to work more efficiently.B. It is in a way quite similar to switch-tasking.C. It makes people's work and life even harder.D. It distracts people's attention from useful work.4. What does the author think of computer-aided design?A. It considerably cuts down the cost of building design.B. It somewhat restrains architects' productive thinking.C. It is indispensable in architects' work process.D. It can free architects from laborious drawing.5. What is Alex Pang's recommendation for Internet users?A. They use the Internet as little as possible.B. They keep a record of their computer use time.D. They entertain themselves online on off-days only.

Text 1It would be all too easy to say that Facebook’s market meltdown is coming to an end. After all, Mark Zuckerberg’s social network burned as much as $ 50 billion of shareholders’ wealth in just a couple months. To put that in context, since its debut(初次登台)on NASDAQ in May, Facebook has lost value nearly equal to Yahoo, AOL, Zynga, Yelp, Pandora, Open Table, Groupon, LinkedIn, and Angie’s List combined, plus that of the bulk of the publicly traded newspaper industry. As shocking as this utter failure may be to the nearly 1 billion faithful Facebook users around the world, it’s no surprise to anyone who read the initial public offering (IPO) prospectus(首次公开募股说明书). Worse still, all the crises that emerged when the company debuted — overpriced shares, poor corporate governance, huge challenges to the core business, and a damaged brand — remain today. Facebook looks like a prime example of what Wall Street calls a falling knife — that is, one that can cost investors their fingers if they try to catch it.Start with the valuation(估值). To justify a stock price close to the lower end of the projected range in the IPO, say $ 28 a share, Facebook’s future growth would have needed to match that of Google seven years earlier. That would have required increasing revenue by some 80 percent annually and maintaining high profit margins all the while. That’s not happening. In the first half of 2012, Facebook reported revenue of $ 2.24 billion, up 38 percent from the same period in 2011. At the same time, the company’s costs surged to $ 2.6 billion in the six-month period. This so-so performance reflects the Achilles’ heel of Facebook’s business model, which the company clearly stated in a list of risk factors associated with its IPO: it hasn’t yet figured out how to advertise effectively on mobile devices, the number of Facebook users accessing the site on their phones surged by 67 percent to 543 million in the last quarter, or more than half its customer base.Numbers are only part of the problem. The mounting pile of failure creates a negative feedback loop that threatens Facebook’s future in other ways. Indeed, the more Facebook’s disappointment in the market is catalogued, the worse Facebook’s imagebecomes. Not only does that threaten to rub off on users, it’s bad for recruitment and retention of talented hackers, who are the life blood of Zuckerberg’s creation. Yet the brilliant CEO can ignore the sadness and complaints of his shareholders thanks to the super-voting stock he holds. This arrangement also was fully disclosed at the time of the offering. It’s a pity so few investors apparently bothered to do their homework.1. What can be inferred about Facebook from the first paragraph?A. Its market meltdown has been easily halted.B. It has increased trade with the newspaper industry.C. It has encountered utter failure since its stock debut.D. Its shareholders have invested $ 50 billion in a social network.2. The crises Facebook is facing _______________.A. have been disclosed in the IPO prospectusB. are the universal risks Wall Street confrontsC. disappoint its faithful usersD. have existed for a long time3. To make its stock price reasonable, Facebook has to _______________.A. narrow the IPO price rangeB. cooperate with GoogleC. keep enormously profitableD. invest additional $ 2.6 billion4. It can be inferred from the context that the “Achilles’ heel” (Line 1, Para.5) refers to ______________.A. deadly weaknessB. problem unsolvedC. indisputable factD. potential risk5. What effect will Facebook’s failure in the market have?A. Its users’ benefits will be threatened.B. Talented hackers will take down the website.C. The CEO will hold the super-voting stock.D. The company’s innovation strength will be damaged.Text 2I’ll admit I’ve never quite understood the obsession(难以破除的成见)surrounding genetically modified (GM) crops. To environmentalist opponents, GM foods are simply evil, an understudied, possibly harmful tool used by big agricultural businesses to control global seed markets and crush local farmers. They argue that GM foods have never delivered on their supposed promise, that money spent on GM crops would be better channeled to organic farming and that consumers should be protected with warning labels on any products that contain genetically modified ingredients. To supporters, GM crops are a key part of the effort to sustainably provide food to meet a growing global population. But more than that, supporters see the GM opposition of many environmentalists as fundamentally anti-science, no different than those who question the basics of man-made climate change. For both sides, GM foods seem to act as a symbol: you’re pro-agricultural business or anti-science. But science is exactly what we need more of when it comes to GM foods, which is why I was happy to see Nature devote a special series of articles to the GM food controversy. The conclusion: while GM crops haven’t yet realized their initial promise and have been dominated by agricultural businesses, there is reason to continue to use and develop them to help meet the enormous challenge of sustainably feeding a growing planet. That doesn’t mean GM crops are perfect, or a one-size-fits-all solution to global agriculture problems. But anything that can increase farming efficiency — the amount of crops we can produce per acre of land — will be extremely useful. GM crops can and almost certainly will be part of that suite of tools’ but so will traditional plant breeding, improved soil and crop management and perhaps most important of all, better storage and transport infrastructure(基础设施), especially in the developing world. (It doesn’t do much good for farmers in places like sub-Saharan Africa to produce more food if they can’t get it to hungry consumers.) I’d like to see more non-industry research done on GM crops — not just because we’d worry less about bias, but also because seed companies like Monsanto and Pioneer shouldn’t be the only entities working to harness genetic modification. I’d like to see GM research on less commercial crops, like corn. I don’t think it’s vital to label GM ingredientsin food, but I also wouldn’t be against if — and industry would be smart to go along with labeling, just as a way of removing fears about the technology. Most of all, though, I wish a tenth of the energy that’s spent endlessly debating GM crops was focused on those more pressing challenges for global agriculture. There are much bigger battles to fight.6. How do environmentalist opponents view GM foods according to the passage?A. They will eventually ruin agriculture and the environment.B. They are used by big businesses to monopolize agriculture.C. They have proved potentially harmful to consumers’ health.D. They pose a tremendous threat to current farming practice.7. What does the author say is vital to solve the controversy between the two sides of the debate?A. Breaking the GM food monopoly.B. More friendly exchange of ideas.C. Regulating GM food production.D. More scientific research on GM crops.8. What is the main point of the Nature articles?A. Feeding the growing population makes it imperative to develop GM crops.B. Popularizing GM technology will help it to live up to its initial promises.C. Measures should be taken to ensure the safety of GM foods.D. Both supporters and opponents should make compromises.9. What is the author’s view on the solution to agricultural problems?A. It has to depend more and more on GM technology.B. It is vital to the sustainable development of human society.C. GM crops should be allowed until better alternatives are found.D. Whatever is useful to boost farming efficiency should be encouraged.10. What does the author think of the ongoing debate around GM crops?A. It arises out of ignorance of and prejudice against new science.B. It distracts the public attention from other key issues of the world.C. Efforts spent on it should be turned to more urgent issues of agriculture.D. Neither side is likely to give in until more convincing evidence is found.Text 3There is a certain inevitability that e-book sales have now overtaken paperback sales on Amazon’s US site. Amazon’s Kindle 2 is so light and so cheap that it’s easy to see why people have rushed to buy it. Though I’m still not keen on the design of the Kindle, it is a vast improvement on its predecessor and certainly tolerable. Beyond the device itself, Amazon has done a great job of rolling out Kindle apps, ensuring that people like me — who have an iPad but not a Kindle — can still join in the fun. Once you’re into the Kindle ecosystem, Amazon locks you in tightly —just as Apple does with its iTunes / iPod ecosystem. It’s so easy to buy from Amazon’s store and the books are so cheap that it’s not worth the effort of going elsewhere. While I remain opposed to Amazon’s DRM(数字版权管理)— indeed, I’m opposed to DRM on any e-books — I have to admit that the implementation is so smooth that most Kindle users won’t care at all that their e-books can’t be moved to other devices. The e-book trend is nowhere near peaking. Over the next five years we can expect to see more and more readers move away from printed books and pick up e-books instead. But I don’t think that will mean the death of the printed book. There are some who prefer printed books. They like having shelves filled with books they’ve read and books they plan to read; they like the feel of the book in their hands and the different weights and typefaces and layouts of different titles. In other words, they like the physical form of the book almost as much as the words it contains.I can sympathize with those people. As I wrote earlier this week, my ideal situation would before publishers to bundle e-books with printed ones — in much the same way that film studio submit DVDs with digital copies of films. There’s no reason to think that lovers of printed books will change their minds. There will undoubtedly be fewer of them as time goes by because more people will grow up with e-books and spend little time with printed ones. However, just as there are people who love vinyl records(黑胶唱片), even if they were born well into the CD era, there will still be a dedicated minority who love physical books.Since there are fewer of these people, that will mean fewer bookshops and higher prices for printed books but I don’t think the picture is entirely bleak. There is scope for smaller print runs of lavishly designed printed books and bookshops aimed at book lovers, rather than the Stieg Larsson-reading masses. With mainstreamreaders out of the printed book market, booklovers might even find they get a better experience.11. What can be inferred from Paragraph One?A. Most people buy Kindle 2 mainly because of its low price.B. The author of the passage is a loyal customer of Apple products.C. Amazon’s Kindle 2 surpassed Kindle 1 in designing.D. The sales of e-book outnumbered those of paperback in the U. S.12. According to the passage, the reason why the author opposes to Amazon’s DRM is that ________________.A. e-books can only be purchased on Amazon. comB. Kindle books are not compatible with other electronic reading devicesC. once implemented, e-books can’t be transferred to other equipmentsD. e-books installed on Kindle 2 can’t be edited freely13. It can be learned that the trend of e-books ________________.A. will come to stop any time soonB. will reach the summit in the near futureC. will meet its heyday when printed books dieD. has already reached its peak14. Why does the author believe that the surging sales of e-books won’t mean the death of the printed book?A. Because a minority will stick to their love of printed books.B. Because the majority of book lovers won’t change their minds.C. Because people always hold nostalgic feelings towards printed books.D. Because people will return to the printed books as time goes by.15. According to the author, which of the following is TRUE about the future of printed books?A. They will be bundled with e-books.B. They will no longer be available in the market.C. They will be sold in small quantity and high quality.D. They will be redesigned to cater to the masses.答案及解析一、阅读理解1.答案:C。
