When my sister Mertie told me she had put out tomato plants last summer, I was quite impressed.
Since she was a garden-beginner, Mertie researched exactly how far apart to space her tomato plants; what kind of fertilizer(化肥) to use; how to keep away the bugs, etc. Once they were planted, she took care of them daily, anxiously awaiting the juicy tomatoes to appear. But, day after day, her plants were tomato-less while all of her neighbors who had also put out tomato plants were already enjoying the fruit of their labor.
Frustrated, Mertie gave in and went to the market to search fresh tomatoes. While paying, Mertie told the farmer her troubles. The farmer paused to think for a moment and then asked, “Well, what kind of tomatoes did you plant?”
“I think they were called Big Boy,” Mertie remembered.
“Well there’s your problem,” the farmer explained. “Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes have a 95-day growing period whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as few as 70 days…you just have to wai t a little longer for the Big Boys.”
With that new knowledge, Mertie went home with excitement, knowing they would be worth the wait.
Thinking ab out my sister’s gardening experience, I had to smile. She just didn’t know that Big Boy tomatoes took longer--neither did I--but once she discovered that information, she was no longer discouraged and upset about the lack of tomatoes on her plants. Instead, she was encouraged and excited to see them a few weeks later.
It makes me wonder how many of us have “Big Boy” dreams in our hearts, yet we just don’t realize that they are of the “Big Boy” variety so we are discouraged and worn out with the waiting process. Instead of waiting with excitement, we give up on our dreams and figure we must have done something wrong to stop them from coming to pass. Frustrated, we see other people’s dreams coming true, and we wonder why ours haven’t yet been achieved.
24. What is not mentioned in the passage when growing tomato plants?
A. Using suitable fertilizer.
B. Keeping them well apart.
C. Watering them regularly.
D. Controlling pests on them.
25. Why did Mertie’s tomato plants fail to produce at the expected time?
A. Because they were destroyed by her neighbors.
B. Because she grew the wrong kind of tomatoes.
C. Becaus e she didn’t manage the garden well.
D. Because they required more time to produce.
26. What does the author compare tomatoes to in the text?
A. Goals.
B. Experiences.
C. Time.
D. Imagination.
27. What does the text intend to show us?
A. It’s better late than never.
B. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.
C. Success sometimes needs a little patience.
D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
C
Drinking alcohol is a socially acceptable behavior in many parts of the world. Some medical experts say light drinking may even be good for your health, especially for the heart. But they say such health benefits should be compared to the many health risks connected with alcohol use.
Some research suggests that having one to two drinks of alcohol a day may offer some health benefits. Several large studies have shown that this type of moderate (适量的) drinking may lower the risk of heart disease and other diseases.
A study last year suggested that drinking small amounts of red wine may help lower the risk of breast cancer in women. Researchers at Medical Center in California studied 36 women. Each woman drank a glass of red or white wine every day for almost a month. Researchers collected blood samples from the women two times a month to measure their hormone (激素) levels. The next month the women who drank red wine were told to drink white wine instead. The white wine drinkers were told to drink red wine. The researchers found that the women who drank red wine had lower levels of the female hormone than the white wine drinkers. They said red grapes have chemicals that may help to lower the risk of breast cancer.
However, recent studies suggested that even small amounts of alcohol may generally increase the risk of breast cancer in women. They found that women who drink four small glasses of wine a week increase their risk of breast cancer by 15 percent.
Many studies have examined the harmful effects of alcohol use on the body. Al icia Ann Kowalchuk serves as medical director, saying “Healthy use for adults—that's men under age 65—is no more than 4 drinks in a day and no more than 14 drinks in a week. And for women of all ages, it's no more than 7 drinks in a week and no more than 2 drinks in a day.”She says too much alcohol use has been linked to liver diseases, and many other cancers.
28. How did the researchers carry out their study?
A. By comparing tested objects.
B. By listing facts.
C. By collecting information worldwide.
D. By following an example.
29. Which of the following is the most beneficial to women with breast cancer?
A. A glass of white wine per day.
B. A glass of red wine per day.
C. Small amounts of alcohol per day.
D. Four small glasses of wine per day.
30. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
31. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Drinking alcohol is popular in many parts of the world
B. Alcohol drinking can be both good and bad for you
C. Drinking alcohol a day may give your health some benefits
D. Alcohol drinking may do harm to your health

Though larger cities were mostly spared,Sunday's tornadoes damaged some small towns in the middle of the U.S. One of the hardest hits was Van,Texas,a town of about 2,600 people located 70 miles southeast of Dallas. Winds there reached up to 140 miles per hour and damaged about 30 percent of the area. Weather experts say it was the strongest tornado to hit the town in more than 70 years.
Emergency workers in Van moved quickly to help those affected, but two people were killed and more than two dozen were injured by the tornado's winds. A driver in the nearby town of Corsicana was killed by floodwaters that had risen after the storm.
In Lake City,Iowa,a tornado tore the roof off South Central Calhoun High School. One hundred and fifty people had gathered in the safety of the school's basement, and all escaped without major harm.
Nine people were injured in the 130-mph winds of a tornado that touched down in Delmont,South Dakota, but tornadoes weren't the only severe weather that state saw on Sunday. Residents in the Black Hills region were faced with a late-spring snowfall of 10 to 18 inches.
Scientists measure tornadoes using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale. It categorizes torn adoes based on the amount of damage they cause and their estimated wind speed. EF1 tornadoes are the weakest, while EF5 tornadoes are the severest. The tornado in Van was categorized as an EF3.
Although tornadoes can happen in any state, they are most common in the central U.S. This is why that part of the country is nicknamed Tornado Alley. Though this past weekend's storms were damaging, they were not abnormal for this time of year. More tornadoes hit the U.S.in May than in any other month, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
“We've had at least one tornado reported somewhere in the nation every day since May 2,”weather expert Greg Carbin said. “It's a dangerous time of year.”
32. Which part of the U.S. was hit by tornadoes on Sunday?
A. The central part.
B. The eastern part.
C. The western part.
D. The southern part.
33. What happened to people in South Central Calhoun High School?
A. They were killed by floodwaters.
B. They survived the tornado luckily.
C. They were badly hurt by the storm.
D. They were not influenced by the tornado.
34. Which tornadoes are the strongest?
A. EF1 tornadoes.
B. EF3 tornadoes.
C. EF4 tornadoes.
D. EF5 tornadoes.

A. a weather expert.
B. the area's climate.
C. the area's landform.
D. the creation of the EF Scale.

Taking a math test can be pretty stressful. Even if you know the material, you can still get the problem wrong. Knowing how to go through your math test and check your work can save you from handing in a test full of mistakes that can be avoided. 36 .
Write it out
You can also check a math problem by writing everything out on paper. 37 . Writing out math problems reduces your chances of missing anything to the lowest possible level, which is
a common cause of incorrect answers.
38
Make sure your answers work by doing the opposite procedure of what your problem calls for, including the answer you got the first time around. In other words, you would use the opposite of this addition problem—subtraction (减法)—to determine whether or not your answer is the correct one.
Plugging in
You may find that a variable (变量) isn't good enough or have a problem where you have to solve for a variable. 39 . This is the only real way to assure yourself that the answer you've found is correct.
Check for a reasonable answer
40 . For example, if you get an answer in the millions and you know it should be in the thousands, you've likely misplaced a point. Go back through the work on your paper to make sure all of your formulas and calculations are correct. If everything looks okay, do the problem again and compare the result of the second try to what you've got on the first try.
A. Do the opposite
B. Correct the answers
C. Plug the variable in the equation (方程) to check it out.
D. Therefore you'll improve your grades, as well as your math skills.
E. It also helps you to figure out everything after you have already finished the test.
F. If the result of a problem seems to make no sense, it indicates that the answer is incorrect.
G. This helps you to know what information you have and what information you need to solve. 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

书面表达:
Dear Tom,
How is everything going?
I’m writing to share with you my unforge ttable experience of the sports meeting held last month.
Before the meeting, my teacher and classmates made a detailed plan. We were all very excited to give advice and provide anything needed. At the same time, the athletes made full preparations, running and jumping in their spare time. During the meeting, the athletes competed fairly on the playground with the other students cheering around. What a great time!
I think our class has become more united after the sports meeting. In addition, the classmates know more about each other and become closer. As a result, we are more hopeful of the colorful school life.
I would appreciate it if you could reply soon.
Truly yours,
Li hua.。
