There are several types of speeches, finding out which one will suit your speech will help you narrow what you're going to say.All the topics chosen in our class is so wide that you have to select an angle to make your point.______________________________________________________________________ Here is a hypothetical example of how I, as a graduate student, would narrow my topic and prepare my speech if I were given 10 minutes on the topic of education. And about the audience, let’s say educators and policy makers and university students in Beijing.Education is wide topic as a whole. There are many aspects I can focus on, such as education in China, education in Africa, or modern higher education around the globe, or worldwide education during the World War II, or higher education in China today. All these are related to the topic of education; but with just 10 minute, it is impossible to deliver a speech on any of the topic listed as example above. I need to make it more focuses with a clear point of view. My steps to fulfill the speech are as follow.First, I need to get a title of my speech. I would think from the side of my audience and decide what kind of effect I want to receive when I finish my talk. Since I have only 10 minute, it is not long enough to give much information; but it is ample to lead people to think over a certain kind of issue and provoke related people to act on the purpose of improving the current issue mentioned. Therefore, I decide to give a speech that states a controversial issue relates to Chinese education, and the goal is to provoke my audience to think. Consideringidentities of my audience, I would narrow the topic to China’s higher education which concerns many of audience, and I have interest in it. However, the chosen topic is a bit wide due to the time limit. I have to further narrow the topic to a point that I can make it clear and give them a full picture of what I what to tell them. Finally, I come up with a title: Are we doing great during the years crowding on campus?Second, I need to think over the structure of my speech. I would like to go with a general three parts speech structure that includes introduction, body and conclusion, as this structure enables audience to get the gist of a speech. I probably draw primary outline for the speech like the chart below which facilitates me to see my speech skeleton and fill it with actual content later.Conclusion: Quality of education in the country is discounted. Educational Quality of education ismuch important than quantity in general. It is time for us, who involved in the Chinese highereducation system, to reflect over how we can make a difference.When I get a structure, I may move on to the third step ----- doing research and filling impressive fact content with vivid words. I have to make the content convincing. So I will cite from news reports, from what students say over the quality of teaching, laboratory’facilities, library resource, general living standard on campus, and show the facts of the current status in higher institutions given by authorities. In order to give a whole picture of employment status graduate student, I want to show data of employment rate. As the research goes on, more details maybe added to the whole structure. Whatever how much details I put in the speech, I need to come to the point I expect to make: the system is not perfect, and it needs a transformation which without efforts from educators, policy makers and students themselves could never accomplish.。
