Popular culture often shows alcohol as a big part of the college experience in the United States.Television programs and movies about American college life have images of wild parties with young people either drinking alcohol or holding a drink.
Now,a new study of alcohol use suggests that some college students may be missing meals so they can have more drinks or get drunk faster.Researchers are calling this kind of behavior "drunkorexia".
The study involved 1,184 college students between the ages of 18 and 26.Researchers found that 80 percent of those studied had shown some kind of drunkorexia in the past three months. They had performed heavy physical exercise, eaten low calorie meals or even missed meals for up to a full day before drinking alcohol.
Dipali Rinker organized the study and presented its findings to the Research Society on Alcoholism in June. She says students see drunkorexia as a way to keep their body weight down while drinking alcohol. And it causes them to feel the effects of alcohol quickly and with more intensity(强度).Rinker says unhealthy eating habits are only one of the reasons why this type of behavior is dangerous.Heavy drinking is linked to drunk driving, unprotected sex,and alcohol poisoning.
George Koob, who directs a U.S.governmental agency that studies alcohol related problems, says that the percent of students using alcohol has not increased in recent years. But what worries him is that the number of students drinking to the point of "blacking out" has increased.Blacking out is when a person drinks so much alcohol he has no memory of his actions when drunk.
Koob notes that college students in Canada and Europe also face issues with alcohol. But he feels a big part of the problem is that Americans do not fully understand alcohol's effects. Most people do not know the part of the brain where decisions are made is not fully
developed until age 25 and that alcohol harms the development of that part of the brain,he adds.
4.What is the purpose of the behavior "drunkorexia"?______

Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers' market.Nine people were killed.More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way.No alcohol or drugs were found in his system.Apparently,he was just old and confused.
This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts,or worse.
In our teenage years,we all heard "driving is not a right;it's a privilege (特权)." That
is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia (痴呆)are very serious concerns.Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults' driving ability.By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old,his or her driving privilege should be examined.
Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it's time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety.Another option (选项)is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours.Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there are laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn't some prescription (处方)drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily.
The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all.Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it's dangerous for the rest of us.
8.The first paragraph is written in order to show ______ .
A. traffic accidents are on the rise
B. the importance of traffic safety
C. the harm of driving at an old age
D. many elderly drivers are careless
9.The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving ______
A. over eighty-five
B. under the influence of prescription drugs
C. with the help of voice warning systems
D. between sunset and dawn
10.The underlined word "unsettling" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to " ______
".
A. worrying
B. disappointing
C. touching
D. interesting
11.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?______
A. How to keep old people safe on the road?
B. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers?
C. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws?
D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person?

The faces of the four U.S.presidents on Mount Rushmore will be likely to last for centuries. But at a newly opened exhibit in Japan, you can catch them only for about eight months. This year, the annual sand sculpture event at the Sand Museum in Tottori,Japan,is focused on another country. This is the 10th anniversary of the event.Artists came from 19 countries to shape sand into different sculptures that represent events in U.S.history and American landmarks.
Tottori is a remote city in the western part of Japan. In the past, not many tourists traveled to it,so Tottori officials decided to use a natural resource:sand. They decided to create a sand museum that would house a series of sand sculptures based on different geographic areas of the world. The sand from each year's exhibition is used again the next year. The project has been a success.About 500,000 people come to visit the museum during the eight months. Some of them return there year after year to see the new sculptures.
The city is now becoming a very popular spot for sand sculpture artists too.Sculptors from all over the world come to Tottori each spring, spending a few weeks working on their masterpieces. They use special tools to smooth the sandy surfaces, cut angles and details. They use only sand and water to create the huge sculptures, some of which tower over their creators.
Originally, the artists built their creations outside. But the works lasted less than two months outdoors. So the museum built a permanent structure to house the artworks, which extended their life to eight months more or less. Now many more tourists get to see the sculptures.Still, the fact that this art is not permanent is the biggest part of the appeal. The temporary sculptures also show a reflection on the Japanese value of appreciating the fleeting (短暂的)nature of the world.
Tottori is not the only Japanese city that shows temporary art like this.Sapporo,in northern Japan, hosts a similar exhibit in the winter, using snow instead of sand. That will be just about the time when the U.S.sand sculpture exhibition is taken apart, and the sand is saved for next year's show.

A. Artists are more easily inspired by nature.
B. Natural works of art are fashionable in the world.

D. The sand is more popular with artists than the snow.
