I. Analysis of the Teaching Material
1. Status and Function
The topic of this unit is about invitation. It teaches the students how to make,accept and decline invitations. It’s close to the everyday life. So we’d better raise the students learning interest first.
2. Teaching aims and demands
(1)Knowledge Objects
Students must learn to make invitations. They must learn to say yes and no to an invitation and give their reasons.
(2)Ability Objects
To improve students’ ability of listening and speaking.
(3)Moral Objects
Help students learn how to make, accept or decline an invitation in foreign countries politely. It will teach students good manners.

Step 1 Lead-in
Play a short part of the song Happy Birthday and let the students guess the name of the song .Ask the students:When do we sing the song –On the birthday.Then say: Today is Lucy ‘s birthday.She is going to have a party at home and she wants to invite some friends to her birthday party.What do you think she should say to her friends Help students to
say:Can you come to my party
Step 2( Culture notes )
In foreign countries ,when you are asked “ Can you come to my birthday party on Saturday night ”you should say: “Yes, I’d love to”. Or “sorry, I can’t. I have to ….” and give him or her your reason why you can’t come. Step 3 Vocabulary(1a)
Show the students some pictures and ask them to say the phrases about them:study for a test, have a piano lesson, go to the doctor, visit my aunt,help my parents.Then do1a,match the words with the pictures.Finally,check the answers.
Step 4 Listening ( 2a and 2b )
Play the recording.Anna is asking her friends to her party. Listen to the conversations and find out if they can come to the party,circle “can” or “can’t”.
Ask students to sum up the use of “can”.In this unit ,we use can to make invitations politely.If you can’t come to the party,you should say sorry first and then tell the reasons.
Play the recording again .Number the reasons why people can’t go to the party.
Step 5 Pairwork
Imagine this Sunday is your birthday,ask your partner to come to your party using the target language.Let some pairs to act out their
conversations.

Step 6 Listening ( 1b )
Sun Ning is inviting some of his friends to his party.First read the conversations in the picture. Then listen to the conversations and write the five names next to the correct sentences in the picture above.
