(Text 1)
M: Which tie shall I wear for the interview? Do you think my blue silk one would look all right? W: That’s a bit boring! I’d wear something with
a small pattern—squares or spots, something
like that.
M: Oh, I don’t know. I think I’ll wear the plain one with no spots or pictures.’
(Text 2)
M: Shall we go and see a film?
W: No. We must do some cleaning first. Then we’ll have to cut the grass in the garden.
(Text 3)
W: What do you think of the new class master?
M: Nobody can take the place of the old teacher, Mr. Williamson.
(Text 4)
M: Nancy, can you help me type this report, please? It’s on the big air crash last night.
W: But I’m up to my neck with all my work already. M: You are the best typist in the office, you know.
W: But your reports are always the longest.
M: Well, this one is very long because it’s about the worst crash in years.
(Text 5)
M: This is your desk, and this is your time card.
Be sure to clock in and out before and after your work.
W: I will.
M: One more thing. Keep your desk neat. It’s the rule.
W: I’ll keep that in mind. Does everything on this desk belong to me?
M: You can use them as long as you work here. If you leave, you’ll have to return them to the company.

M: Hi, Kate. You look great. New skirt?
W: Thanks, Robert. I’ve had this skirt for a long time. But I bought these tennis shoes with Mum this morning. How do you like them?
M: Well, they are very nice. Oh, I’d like Mum to buy me a pair, too.
W: Mum will be free the day after tomorrow so you can ask her to take you downtown to buy a similar pair as well.

M: Well, it was great to catch up with you, but I’d better leave before the traffic. I have to pick up my mom and drive her to the dentists.
W: Yeah, me too. Well, say hello to your mom. I haven’t seen her for ages. How’s she doing, by the way?
M: She’s doing really well for her age. She still walks every day, but she doesn’t drive much any more. Oh, it reminds me that you haven’t
seen my new car.
W: You’ve got a new car?
M: Yeah. Two weeks ago, I do love it!
W: Where is it?
M: It’s parked just over there. Come on, let’s take a quick look before you leave.
W: Which one is it?
M: It’s the little gray BMW, parked next to the Nissan.
W: Oh, it’s fantastic! I’m so jealous. Mine is only a black Honda.
M: Well, you’ll just also have to get a new one, I believe.

W: Good afternoon. U Drive It Rentals. May I help you?
M: Yes. I’m interested in renting a car for the weekend, and I’m wondering if you have a special weekend rate?
W: Yes, we do. What sort of car are you interested
in?
M: We’re a family of three and we have camping equipment. I’m used to driving a small car, but I might need something a little larger because of all the equipment that we have.
W: When will you rent a car?
M: Well, let me see. We’ll be leaving on Friday, that is July 7th, and then returning on the Monday, the 10th.
W: We’ll have a Pinto station wagon to recommend to you. I think that will be your best choice.
To get the special weekend rate, you’d better pick up the car after four o’clock on Friday afternoon and return it by ten o’clock on Monday morning.
M: OK. What would the price for that be?
W: Our regular rate is $79 95, but the special weekend rate is $59 95.

M: Hey, Michelle. Look what I just found. Right here in the sand.
W: A piece of wood? Oh. Driftwood, interesting shape, almost like some sort of modern sculpture. M: Yeah. And feel how smooth it is.
W: Hmm. Must have been in the water a long time.
It could’ve been drifting in the ocean movement for months, or even years.
M: In the ocean movement? Doesn’t the wind just blow things around out there?
W: Well, sure. But the ocean water is always moving, too. Almost like rivers, underwater rivers, flowing through the ocean.
M: So how do scientists find out where ocean water goes? Stick a message in a bottle and throw it in the water?
W: Don’t laugh. In fact, I was reading in a science magazine that scientists have put huge numbers of bottles into the ocean over the years. They wanted to map out where the ocean water would carry them.
M: Say, I’m sure—after they found out where all
those bottles ended up—they could enter all that data into a computer and make a pretty detailed model to show where the ocean water goes.
W: In fact, they did.
听第10段材料,回答第17至20题。

(Text 10)
Jack London is a famous American writer. His most widely known book is the Call of Wild, the story of the adventures of a large dog in the frozen north. He was born on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California. His family was very poor, and Jack had to leave school to make money. He worked hard at many different jobs. Later, Jack returned to school, but he didn’t stay long. He wrote, “Life and pocket were both too short.”
In 1897, he went to Alaska to find gold. Instead, he found ideas there for his books and stories. He returned home and started to write. His writings were successful and he became rich
and famous in his twenties. Jack London was not a happy man, however. In poor health, he took his own life in 1916.
