21.(6分)The True Story of a Young Man
When Reginald Lindsay received a scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1967, what he wanted most was not a job with a good salary, but a chance to be a member of Congress as a southern representative. After earning his degree at Harvard Law School in 1970, he returned to the South to practice law among the poor. “I want to help them understand what their rights are and to help them achieve them,” he said. Then he ran for political office at the local and state level until he was ready to try for Congress.
Reg grew up in a low-income Negro section of Birmingham, Alabama. Brought up by his grandparents after his parents were divorced while he was very young, Reg had been living through a period of far-reaching progress in race relations. In the summer of 1968 Reg himself became a good example of this progress when he became the first Negro student appointed to a special new program. The program introduced bright young students to the workings of the Georgia State government and encouraged them to seek employment there after fin ishing their education. “I‟ve been lucky,” he said. “I seem to have been in the right place at the right time.”
But luck was only part of Reg‟s story, for he made the most of opportunities that came his way. He learned to read in kindergarten and began visiting the public library regularly to borrow books. His grandparents encouraged him, though neither of them had much education, and they bought him a set of encyclopedias. “I loved those books,” he remembered. “I used to come downstairs before breakfast an d read short articles. I enjoyed reading about famous men, and then I would pretend to be one of them. I guess
it was partly a childish game and partly an escape. It wasn‟t too much fun to be a Negro when I was a kid.” While studying for his bachelor‟s deg ree at Morehouse College, Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a “B” average while majoring in political science.
With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship, Reg made a good start on his professional career. He said, “The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service.” Then in 1975 he was the Massachusetts state commissioner of public utilities and from 1993 to 2009 he was judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

22.(8分)More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, lots of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1.67mill ion pieces are housed no more than 200 museums in4 7 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.
Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23, 000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.
The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn lo official channels in) to demand the return of relics.
In 2003, a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur(企业家)Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a bigheadache.
In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. 23.(8分)I used to be crazy about the hunting season. The excitement of waiting for a prey(猎物)and the pride of showing off the kill fascinated me. However, everything changed after that cold morning.
Early on that day of the late fall, I set off alone for the woods, packing a gun, a
bot tle of hot coffee and three thick sandwiches. After finding the fresh deer’s tracks in the snow, I settled down behind a little bush.
I sat there for about an hour. It was then that I saw him. A deer, a big beautiful deer! There was no cover nearer to him than 30 yards. Surely I couldn’t miss! I waited for
him to realize I was there. I waited for him to be shocked and run away. But he fooled me completely. He came towards me! He was curious, I suppose, or maybe he was stupid---how else can you explain it? Well, that deer walked right up to where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me!
What happened next is hard to believe, but it’s true. And it all seemed quite natural. Just as when a friendly young deer comes near you, I reached up and scratched his head. And he liked to be scratched. In fact, he practically asked for more. Then, I fed him my sandwich! Yes, I know what a deer eats, but that deer ate my sandwich. Well, he finally went his way, down the hill and up the deer trail. Shoot him? Not me. Y ou wouldn’t have either, not after that. I just watched him go.
When I was about half way back, I heard two shots, followed by a dull slam(撞击)a few seconds later. Those two shots usually mean a kill. I had forgotten there were other hunters that day.

C.The Cruel Killing. D.The Last Hunting.
24.(8分)Clyde, a small-clawed otter, was moved from Auckland Zoo to Wellington Zoo two months ago. The zookeepers hoped he and the other otter Bonnie might start a family together.
But only two days after he arrived, Clyde went missing. He had dug his way under one of the walls and was nowhere to be seen.
The zookeepers set up cages inside the zoo, with plates of Clyde’s favorite fish in them, hoping to catch him.
Two days went by and still there was no sign of Clyde.
At last a couple saw Clyde at their house a whole kilometer away in Newtown. Clyde was hiding in an out-of-reach hole outside their laundry.
The zookeepers arrived and set up some more traps to try to catch him. But Clyde is a pretty smart otter. Twice he managed to get the fish out of a trap without being caught.
Five days after he’d escaped ^Clyde s days on the run came to an end when he was finally caught in one of the traps.
It was no good putting Clyde back in his old home---he’d only dig his way out again. So he and Bonnie were put into the zoo hospital. There was no chance of their escaping from there.
Meanwhile, the zookeepers were working hard to make Clyde’s old home safer. They put an iron barrier underground to stop him digging his way out. Then Bonnie and Clyde went home again.
But a month after his first escape, Clyde was out again. Once more the zookeepers came hurrying to catch Clyde. They found him by following the bubbles he made in the river nearby.
Nobody knew how Clyde had escaped. But this time he was only out for an hour. So back he went to the hospital again.
Poor Clyde. It seemed that he wasn’t happy at Wellington Zoo, even though he and Bonnie were getting on well together. The keepers didn’t like seeing him unhappy, so they planned to look for a home for him somewhere else.

25.(10分)JOHANNESBURG—They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad(蟾蜍)has joined that club of clever survivors.
South Africans are shocked at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town, after jumping into a porcelain(瓷器) candlestick (烛台)that was made there. South African officials reportedly planned to put down the creature, fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.
But the toad got a last-minute pardon. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal shelter, after officials decided to find a way to let the toad live. The two-hour fight was a breeze compared to the trip from China, a long way of many weeks and thousands of kilometers across the Indian Ocean.
Airline spokesman Hein Kaiser said the toad got “first-class treatment”, sitting in a transparent plastic container with escort Brett Glasby, an animal welfare inspector. There was even a ceremony, in which the t oad’s boarding pass was handed to Glasby.
“He was the star of the show on the flight,” Kaiser said of the amphibious(两栖的) passenger. “I think every passenger stopped to have a look.”
On landing in Johannesburg, the toad was brought out of its container for a celebrity-style photo shoot. Observers said the brown toad seemed like a cool customer.
It belongs to the Asian Toad species, which breeds during the monsoon(季风) season. It is believed to have survived the trip from China by hardening its skin to prevent it from drying out, and also by slowing its breathing and heart rate—methods that help the species survive in times of drought.
“We’ve had snakes in imported timber and scorpions(蝎子) in fruit. We were called because the toad was right inside the candlest ick, and we had to break it to get it out” Glasby, the inspector, told The Star, a South African newspaper.

A.An Asian toad gets a new home in South Africa.
B.Asian toads can’t get used to the life in South Africa.
C.Workers shipped a toad to South Africa on purpose.

2、If the toad is released into the wild, _________.

3、The toad was able to arrive in South Africa alive_________.
A.because it escaped all attacks and hunts

D.because it was lucky to be given a chance
4、It can be inferred from the passage that_________.
A.sometimes animal are transported accidentally
B.no one has seen such a big toad in Africa
C.a candlestick is the best place for a toad
D.droughts make toads live longer

Several years ago I 2 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 3 by things. People were
always doing things that annoyed her, and 4 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 5 person.
Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 6 . Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. Perhaps most of us aren’t as ext reme at fault-finding, 14 when we’re honest, we can be sharply 15 of the world. I’m not suggesting you 16 problems, or that you pretend things are 17 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are --- 18 most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big 19 .

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Charlie,
I’m delighted to know you are coming to China with your family during the Chinese Spring Festival, which is a great chance for you to experience Chinese culture personally. Here I am writing to offer you some advice.
It would be a good idea if you could make some preparations before your travel. First of all, learn some simple Chinese, especially the daily expressions, which makes it easier for you to communicate with the locals wherever you go. Besides, to get yourself familiar with some Chinese local customs and traditions may help you behave properly during your stay. What’s more, you can learn how to use chopsticks beforehand so that you can taste different varieties of Chinese food more conveniently.
I hope you will find my advice helpful. Wish you a pleasant journey in China. Yours,
Li Hua。
