Girl Scouts(女童军) gave me a way to always feel at home, no matter where I moved.
I was born in Nebraska, but my first Girl Scouts troop was in North Dakota. We then moved to Utah when I was in the third grade, and I was in Girl Scouts of Utah from third grade until I graduated from the 12th
grade in 1999.
When I got to Utah, I was the new kid in school, as we moved in January, about halfway through the school year. Making friends was hard. I don’t remember how long after we moved that my mom reached out to the local Girl Scouts council and found me a troop(队伍).
I remember that the girls in the troop welcomed me with open arms. It was nice to have friends to eat lunch and play with on the playground. My mom ended up becoming the leader of that troop, too! Girl Scouts was the connection to a new place. It was a way for me to make friends and meet people and gave me a sense of home.
After attending college in Utah, I moved to California and eventually got a job working for Angeles Girl Scout Council. I learned a lot while in Girl Scouts, including leadership skills and money management, but this has been the most useful skill that I learned: that Girl Scouts are connected to each other.
Thinking back, I first moved here with no job. I was living with my dad’s cousin and wasn’t really sure if it was going to work or if I was going to stay, but 16 years later, I’m still here—thanks in large part to the Girl Scouts.
I spent Thanksgiving with my co-workers at the Girl Scouts when I couldn’t go back home, I celebrated birthdays with them, and watched their kids grow up. I’ve learned and grown so much from the co-workers
and the troop leaders that I have met through my job. Even as an adult, the Girl Scouts remain that connection and that lifeline for me—they are my extended family. That lesson is priceless!

Completing chores promotes the development of many basic skills necessary for success in life. For younger children completing simple chores can improve coordination and motor skills (协调与行动技能). Completing chores also enhances a child’s ability to follow directions and
helps develop planning and organization skills. Completing chores also helps children develop time management skills. Researchers found that children who did household chores also scored high on measures of academic success.
Doing chores also helps children develop a sense of responsibility. They not only engage in self-help skills which foster(培养) a sense of independence and a sense of shared responsibility. Successfully completing chores also promotes feelings of self-worth and belonging. When parents do everything, children may feel either dependent on others or may expect things to be done for them.
There is a reason we call chores, chores. Most people, including parents, don’t love doing them, but they need to be done anyway. It’s obvious that kids learning to take care of themselves and help around the house helps them to become more independent and ready for the freedom that will come when they get older. I think it is necessary to distinguish(区别) between self-help and maintaining the household. Some children consider picking up toys, making their bed, or even brushing their teeth as a chore.
The obsession with screen time by many children adds to the problem. They hate any activity that may rob(夺去) them of a few more minutes on their electronic devices. One rule of thumb(实用原则) should be that activities related to personal care, homework, and helping out the family
or the family pet come first. When responsibilities are met and if there is time left, it can be used for recreational activities. The average kid in the U.S. receives an allowance (pocket money) of $800 per year. However, I believe that kids should do chores for the same reason parents do—because the chores need to be done, and not with the expectation of getting money. I suggest that an allowance ought to stand on its own, not as a payment but as a teaching tool. For example, allowances can teach kids about the value of saving, and how to plan to use money.【1】The first paragraph is mainly about ______.
A.the benefits of kids doing chores
B.the skills a kid should have
C.the measures of academic success
D.the ways to be successful in life
【2】The writer probably agrees that ______.
A.pocket money can be a tool to teach kids about money
B.obsession with screen time may drive kids to do chores
C.kids know how to tell self-help from maintaining the household
D.kids can do everything on their own with the help of their parents 【3】The purpose of the passage is to tell readers ______.
A.doing chores is being responsible
B.kids should be away from screens
C.it’s good for kids to complete chores
D.kids who do chores are more independent

An article just published says some forms of screen time are more harmful to academic(学业的) achievement than others. The researchers found that viewing television and playing video games appeared to have a negative effect on academic achievement.
Based on an analysis of the data from 58 studies related to screen time and various measures of academic achievement, it should be noted that
some individual studies do find a connection between total screen time and academics. Too much screen time produces several problems, including academics, sleep, socialization as well as physical and mental health.
The findings of the new study lend support to the need to look at not only how much time teens spend on the use of digital devices but what positive and negative effects various devices may have on academic achievement. The bottom line is that parents and educational professionals should consider supervision(监督) and reduction on screen time to improve the academic performance of teens, as the academic performance of teens appeared to be more adversely affected than that of children.
Children may be obsessed with activities like playing games, while teens can even stay up all night texting or chatting. So the most important rule should be no digital devices of any kind allowed in bedrooms. Also, there should be no screen time of any type at least one hour before bedtime. The blue light from these devices causes teens to have trouble falling asleep.
Alternatives(替代品) to digital use can be physical activities or reading. There is an increase in Vitamin D deficiency(不足) in teens from not getting at least an hour per day of exposure to the sun and they need to spend more time outside. Spending time reading each day is
vital(important) for all family members. It’s great to read the same book and discuss different thoughts. Research is starting to show that we comprehend more from reading from books on paper than books on screen.
Besides limiting time and encouraging alternative activities, teens are encouraged to use media creatively. This might include making videos, recording their own music, or learning to code. Apps to teach office skills or researching are great. While monitoring and setting limits are the key, parents also need to suggest and encourage alternative uses of digital devices as well as alternative activities to replace the screen time.
【1】The second paragraph is mainly about ______.
A.the influence of the new study
B.methods used in the new study

D.suggestions given by the new study 【2】The underlined word “adversely” probably means “______”.
A.in an unfavorable way
B.in an unusual way
C.in an unbelievable way

【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Teens should be banned from using media in most cases.
B.The study focuses on the influence screen time has on teens’ health.
C.Viewing television much can get in the way of good test performance.
D.It’s better to go outside than to read as an alternative activity to screen time.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Should Teens Say Goodbye to Screen Time?
