第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)I was getting ready to go to bed when the phone rang. This could not be good. My mind raced through the list of family members who might need help, but the voice was hardly familiar.
“Linda, this is Lesley.” I didn’t know Lesley well. We did occasionally speak with each other, but to say we were friends was not appropriate. I asked what she needed. Perhaps something really awful caused her to reach someone she barely knew. Instead, she asked me, “Do you have room for a turkey? In your freezer?” We had lots of room in our freezer, and in fact, too much. “Sure,” I responded, “did your freezer break down?” “Not exactly,” Lesley replied, “but I will explain when I arrive.”
Minutes later came a huge freezer truck. Lesley stepped down and explained the lease (租约) of the grocery store her husband serviced had run out and that they had to empty all the freezers that night. Thinking it was a shame to throw away all this good food, they decided to drop off food to anyone she could think of. Noticing our freezer was pretty empty, Lesley asked to fill it up. Our home was their last stop and anything left would have to be put in our freezer. An hour later, ever ything finished, I asked her, “When will you come back for all this?” Lesley laughed, “We don’t want it back. It is yours! Thanks for helping us out!” Then they waved goodbye and drove away.
“For helping them out?” We opened our freezer door. Inside were a ll expensive foods we never bought but often longed to try. We were struggling to buy groceries, yet it was not something we shared with anyone. However, our needs were met in an unexpected way by that call.

B.Their freezer was not frequently used.
C.They were glad to put the turkey in the freezer.
D.Their freezer was too small to fill much food in.
3、Why did Lesley call up the writer?
A.Because the writer was her good friend.
B.Because something awful had happened.
C.Because she knew the writer was in need.
D.Because she didn’t want food to go to wast e.
4、What can be the best title for the text?
A.Who Is My Angel? B.Unexpected Bargains
C.A Friend on Speaking Terms D.Do You Have Room for a Turkey?
22.(8分)There are a lot of products out there that make your life easier. Some, however, are a little sillier than others — so much that they seem like joke products. Here are a few products that sound crazy, but actually true.
Sleep Phones
It’s hard to imagine something sillier than a music-playing headband you wear while you sleep, but they exist —and are qui te popular. Sleep Phones won’t give you the highest quality sound in the world, but if you prefer to fall asleep to music, they’re far more comfortable than normal headphones. While they’re a bit expensive, they might be perfect for
you. There’s also a wir eless version if you prefer.
Onion Goggles
If cutting onion brings on the waterworks no matter what you try, it’s time for desperate measures. We tested a bunch of methods for avoiding onion tears, and found the best solutions came down to cutting the onion under a vent (通风孔), or wearing these stylish and awesome goggles.
Lock Laces
There’re some great ways to tie your shoes better, but if you long for the laceless shoes of your childhood days, Lock Laces are a pretty good choice. They’re basically elastic (有弹性的) laces that remove the need to tie your shoes. Sure, people will make fun of you, but you can make fun of them after they trip over their own untied laces. Or you can make your own slip-on shoes with elastic tubing.
2D-Glasses
Hate 3D-movies, but have to go to one? The difference between 2D-glasses and 3D-glasses lies in their lenses (镜片). Each lens of 2D-glasses blocks the same picture, so each eye gets the same picture, while each lens of 3D-glasses blocks a different picture, so each eye gets a different picture which the brain interprets as 3D.Now you have a pair of glasses that can save you from the headache caused by wearing 3D-glasses which are popular in our movie theaters. You can buy them or make a pair for yourself.
1、What do we know about Sleep Phones?
A.There are two versions.
B.They’re comfortable but unhealthy.
C.They give you the best quality sound.
D.They’re cheaper than other headphones.
2、The underlined part “brings on the waterworks” in the text probably means _____.
A.makes your eyes water B.makes your fingers hurt
C.destroys your water pipes D.adds to your washing work
3、Compared with 3D-glasses, 2D-glasses _____.
A.are cheaper and thinner B.won’t give you a headache
C.let you see a different picture D.are more popular in movie theaters
23.(8分)Information about Special Educational Needs
Learn what to do if you think your child has Special Educational Needs (SEN).
What Special Educational Needs?
Special Educational Needs is a legal term. It describes the needs of child who has a difficulty or disability
which makes learning harder for them than for other children their age.
What if I think my child has SEN?
You know your child better than anyone else. If your child is pro-school, don’t wait for their next routine health check:—visit your GP (全科医生) and ask for their opinion. If your child is already in school (including nursery), talk to their teacher. Ask also to speak to the school’s Special Educational Needs
Co-ordinator (SENCO), who organizes extra help for children with SEN.
What will the school do?
Schools are required by law to provide an education for all pupils, regardless of their ability or special needs. Every child’s education is equally important.
If the SENCO and your child’s teacher agree that your child has SE N, the school will probably take a “graduated approach”—this means “step-by-step”. They will offer your child extra support, with the possibility of more support if needed.
1、We can see that children with SEN ________.
A.have difficulty in coping with disability of various kinds
B.are not as good at learning as ot her children in one family
C.are not able to learn like normal ones in equal conditions
D.have below-average intellectual ability just at school age
2、If a child with SEN has special difficulty in learning, he/she might ________.
A.receive one-to-one teaching B.skip what is beyond him/her
C.graduate like others as usual D.get assistance from his/her GP
24.(8分)Questioning the existence of aliens is something that scientists have done for decades. In fact, most people do believe that aliens exist in some fashion. The main necessities for life are water and some form of energy source. Not surprisingly, there are some planets, exoplanets and moons that fit the bill. Here are several best chances at finding life in the universe.
◆TRAPPIST-1
TRAPPIST-1 is a planetary system a few dozen light-years away, whose discovery was announced in early 2017. This system consists of seven Earth-like exoplanets orbiting an "ultra-cool" star, and it is one of our shots at finding possible life beyond our own solar system.
◆Titan
Titan is the largest moon of Saturn, the sixth planet from our Sun. This moon could potentially harbor life but possibly not in the sense that we think. Titan does not exactly fit the description of being in a typical habitable zone.
Titan has water, and it has liquid. It just doesn't have liquid water. The water on this moon is completely solid because of the extremely cold temperature.
◆Europa
Europa is one of Jupiter's moons here in our own solar system. It is another candidate due to its potential to hold liquid water. Europa is thought to have all the necessities for life including water, energy sources, and the right chemical build-up.
◆Mars
The Red Planet, the fourth from the Sun, is probably one of the most talked-about potential candidates for extraterrestrial(地球外的) life and even for human colonization. Despite some different voices, finding extraterrestrial life on Mars really is a serious possibility.
We know by now that we won't find little green men or any intelligent form of life that we understand. However, there is evidence that there was and may still be microscopic life on the small red planet.
1、The common point of these celestial bodies is that _______.
A.solid water exists on them respectively
B.life might exist on each of them
C.they all contain liquid water
D.each of them has living things on it
2、Which celestial body could have life different from human imagination?
A.TRAPPIST-1. B.Titan.
C.Europa. D.Mars.
3、Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Europa is the most talked-about potential candidate for extraterrestrial life.
B.TRAPPIST-1 is the only body that contains life beyond the solar system.
C.All the scientists do believe that aliens exist in some manner.
D.There is proof that life existed on the celestial body Mars.

22、The “swim-with-dolphins” tourist industry is becoming more popular every year. After all, it can cost a large amount of money to have this kind of holiday experience. So tour operators try to place eager swimmers as near as possible to the dolphins by trying to predict where the dolphins will be.
Research has shown that while dolphins can move away if they do not want to interact (交流)with human swimmers, they do not like it at all if the swimmers slip into the water directly on top of them or if humans are in their path of travel. However, if swimmers enter the water to one side of them, the dolphins do not avoid the swimmers to the same extent.
In all cases, the dolphins seem to have become more sensitive to the presence of the swimmers. For dolphins, swimming amongst or with humans is not necessarily a high priority. This research has shown that only 19% of any group of dolphins will participate in interaction. Young dolphins are the most likely to interact; they do seem curious about being with humans. It is believed that they see humans as “entertainment” and that the interaction is a new and unusual experience for them.
It is frequently asked whether “swim-with-dolphins” tourism should be discontinued. The advice is that dolphins should be given enough periods of time throughout the day when they are not exposed to tourism. Permitted interactions should not be to o disturbing to the dolphins since there could be mothers and calves (幼崽)present in dolphin groups. There should also be educational campaigns about the creatures and what is likely to cause danger to them.
It is not easy to explain to someone that they cannot fulfill their lifelong dreams because the dolphins are resting, or that a mother dolphin and calf are in the area. But if we are to enjoy these remarkable animals and not just use them for our entertainment, then we must carefully monitor the “swim-with-dolphi ns” industry worldwide.
