A
Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the U. S. Department of Homeland Security recommends having at least a two - week supply of water and food.
Potatoes
Shelf life:2 to 5 weeks if stored in a cool, dry, dark place
Yukon Gold, red, and fingerling potatoes will last from two to three weeks. Larger white potatoes can last for three to five weeks. Sweet potatoes have about the same shelf life. Don't store them next to onions, however. The two might go together well in cooking, but raw, each gives off gases and moisture that might cause the other to spoil faster.
Tea
※Shelf life:6 to 12 months past "sell - by" date
Dried tea leaves, whether loose (in a sealed container) or in teabags (in an unopened box) can easily last a year or more if they' re not subjected to damp or humidity. However, the tea does tend to lose flavor over time.
Peanuts
● Shelf life:1 to 2 months
Peanuts in their shell, especially when kept cool and dry, are perfectly happy in the cupboard for as long as two months.
Canned fruits and vegetables
● Shelf life:1 to 2 years past "sell - by” date
Canningis an extremely efficient means of preserving food. Generally speaking, if canned foods aren't subjected to extreme heat, their contents should stay good for two years or more. Be aware, however, of dented cans or those with swollen tops, which may indicate the presence of bacteria inside.
1. Which can go bad faster if stored with onions?
A. Potatoes.
B. Tea.
C. Peanuts.
D. Canned fruits and vegetables.
2. What is special about tea?
A. The flavor of tea can always remain the same.
B. Tea leaves are better to be preserved in an open jar.
C. Tea leaves should be kept away from the state of being wet.
D. The maximum length of time that tea can be stored is 6 months.
3. What may shorten the "sell - by” date of canned foods ?
A. Shapes of cans.
B. Categories of foods.
C. Decline of the temperature.
D. Exposure to high temperature.

Imust have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the wonderful way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Sometimes, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading.
I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
4. Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands?
A. She wanted mom to read the news to her.
B. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart.
C. She couldn’t help but stopmom from reading.
D. She was eager to know what had happened.
5. According to Paragraph 3, the author’s reading of road signs shows___________.
A. her own way to find herself
B. her eagerness to develop her reading ability
C. her growing desire to know the world around her
D. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules
6. The author takes novel reading as a way to___________.
A. explore a mysterious land
B. develop an interest in learning
C. get away from a confusing world
D. learn about the adult world
7. What could be the best title for the passage?
A The Pleasure of Reading B. Growing Up with Reading
C. The Magic of Reading
D. Reading Makes a Full Man
C
In Japan many workers for large corporations have a guarantee of lifetime employment. They will not be laid off during recessions or when the tasks they perform are taken over by robots. To some observers, this is capitalism at its best, because workers are treated as people not things. Others see it as necessarily inefficient and believe it cannot continue if Japan is to remain competitive with foreign corporations more concerned about profits and less concerned about people.
Defenders of the system argue that those who call it inefficient do not understand how it really works. In the first place not every Japanese worker has the guarantee of a lifetime job. The lifetime employment system includes only “regular employees.” Many employees do not fall into this category, including all women. All businesses have many part time and temporary employees. These workers are hired and laid off during the course of the business cycle just as employees in the United States are. These “irregular workers” make up about 10 percent of the nonagricultural work force. Additionally, Japanese firms maintain some flexibility through the
extensive use of subcontractors. This practice is much more common in Japan than in the United States.
The use of both subcontractors and temporary workers has increased markedly in Japan since the 1974-1975 recession. All this leads some people to argue that the Japanese system really is not all that different from the American system. During recessions Japanese corporations lay off temporary workers and give less business to subcontractors. In the United States, corporations lay off those workers with the least working experience. The difference then is probably less than the term “lifetime employment” suggests, but there still is a difference. And this difference cannot be understood without looking at the values of Japanese society. The relationship between employer and employee cannot be explained in purely contractual terms. Firms hold on to the employees and that employees stay with one firm. There are also practical reasons for not jumping from job to job. Most retirement benefits come from the employer. Changing jobs means losing these benefits. Also, teamwork is an essential part of Japanese production. Moving to a new firm means adapting to a different team and at least temporarily, lower productivity and lower pay.
8. According to the passage, a woman in Japan _________.
A. cannot get a lifetime job
B. is impossible to get a part time job
C. will be employed for life
D. is among the regular workers
9. Which of the following is NOT the reason why Japanese workers stay with one firm?
A. They don’t want to lose their retirement benefits.
B. They are not adaptable people.
C. Any change of jobs will make them less paid.
D. They get used to the teamwork.
10. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A. those who want to change jobs frequently in Japan should think twice
B. those who are first laid off by American corporations are temporary workers
C. the use of subcontractors makes Japanese firms less flexible
D. the Japanese system is totally different from the American system
11. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The extremely hard situation during recessions.
B. The extensive use of subcontractors in Japan.
C. The characteristics of corporations in the United States.
D. The features of lifetime employment in Japan.
D
Concrete is the world's most consumed material after water. Because it already surrounds us in the built
environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity—turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun: rechargeable batteries are necessary when the breeze dies down or darkness falls.
Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a traditional battery does. But one team now reports in Buildings that it has developed a rechargeable original model that could represent a more than 900 percent increase in stored charge, compared with earlier attempts.
A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. Still, "you can make a battery out of a potato," notes Aimee Byrne. In a future where sustainability is key, she likes the idea of buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.
Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts, it still has a long way to go: 200 square meters of it "can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption" of a typical U.S. home, Zhang says.
This is not enough to compete with today's rechargeable devices. "We're getting milliamps (毫安) out of concrete batteries—we're not getting amps (安培), "Byrne says." We're getting hours as opposed to days of charge." But she adds that" concrete batteries are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs." The earliest batteries were simple andbulky. Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today's small devices. Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution. "The whole idea is that we're looking far into the future," she says. "We're playing the long game with it."
12. What can we learn about the concrete batteries?
A. They become increasingly renewable.
B. They are the most consumed batteries.
C. They are being developed by researchers.
D. They will replace energy from the wind and sun.
13. Why does Byrne mention a battery out of a potato?
A. To show it is easy to build concrete batteries.
B. To argue it is possible to develop concrete batteries.
C. To make her statement more interesting.
D. To call on people to protect the environment.
14. What does the underlined word "bulky" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Heavy
B. Cheap
C. Efficient
D. Small.
15. What doesByrne think of concrete batteries?
A. They beat today's rechargeable devices.
B. They are simple and bulky.
C. They have a doubtful future.
D. They have a long way to go.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项Feeding bread to the ducks is a fond pastime for many of us, reminding us of happy childhood trips to the local park.____16____Eating it can cause our feathered friends to develop a condition called Angel Wing, which is when too much bread makes birds’ feathers grow too quickly. This additional weight puts a strain on their muscles, causing their wings to twist and drop open, and if not treated fast, they can lose the ability to fly.
“Angel Wing can be cured if we reach birds before it has developed too severely,” says Caroline Simpson, a trustee ofUKcharity Swan Lifeline. “____17____” Over the last 20 yearsUKcharity Swan Lifeline has rescued and treated more than 30,000 birds. Adult birds can develop heart disease by eating much bread, so it’s important that we do our best to prevent this by feeding then with the right kind of food.
____18____Rotten (腐烂的) bread at the bottom of rivers and lakes allows bacteria to produce, spreading disease and attracting rats and other pests to our waterways, which can result in the presence of a mould (霉菌) called Aspergillus. It has the potential to kill waterfowl (水禽) and other wildlife if it gets into their lungs.
____19____Giving birds the right food — like frozen peas, sweetcorn and some other plants — is good for both them and the environment. They can float on the water surface, and birds can enjoy them.____20____
A. So we must stop feeding the ducks.
B. But did you know that bread actually puts birds in danger?
C. This doesn’t mean we have to stop fun trips to feed the ducks.
D. Bread can also cause harmful changes to the natural ecosystem (生态系统).
E. What a scene it is to watch ducks eating bread loating on the river.
F. Otherwise the results can be serious — such as the loss of the wing.
G. So next time take a healthier alternative and do your bit to protect our precious wildlife.
