Dialogue
On Friend and Love
A: Hi, guy, what kinds of qualities do you look for in your friend?
B: I like people who are open and friendly. They should be sincere, and I believe that a friend in need is a friend indeed.
A: I don’t like making friends with dishonest people. Honesty is very important to me. B: Yeah, without honesty there is no trust in friendship.
A: What about love? What’s important in your attitude towards love?
B: Love is about mutual understanding and respect. Love isn’t about how to find out the similarities, it’s about how to respect the differences!

Find Lasting Love
A healthy, loving relationship can enhance many aspects of your life, from your emotional and mental well-being to your physical health and overall happiness.
Life as a single person offers many rewards; however, if you’re ready to share your life with someone and want to build a lasting, worthwhile relationship, life as a single person can also be very frustrating.
For many of us, finding someone we want to share our lives with can seem like an impossible task. Even if you have a history of relationships that don’t last or if you feel burned out by traditional and online dating, you can still learn how to find lasting love.
Finding the right romantic partner is often a difficult journey. Perhaps you grew up in a household where there was no role model of a solid, healthy relationship and you doubt that such a thing even exists. Or maybe your dating history consists only of short, abrupt relationships and you don’t know how to make a relationship last. You could be attracted to the wrong type of person or making the same bad choices, due to an unresolved issue from your past. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to believe that a healthy romantic relationship for you exists in the future.
It’s important to recognize that relationships are never perfect and always require lots of work, compromise, and a willingness to resolve conflict in a positive way. To find and build any relationship worth keeping, you may need to start by re-assessing some of your misconceptions about dating and relationships that can prevent you from finding lasting love.

The Magical Ingredients of Love Relationships
Love is such a powerful human emotion that experts are constantly studying it. They’ve discovered that love has three main qualities:
1.Attraction is the "chemistry" part of love. It’s all about the physical interest
that two people have in each other. Attraction is also what’s behind the nervous-but-excited way we feel when that person is near.
2. Closeness is the bond that develops when we share thoughts and feelings that we don ’t share with anyone else. When you have this feeling of closeness with your boyfriend or girlfriend, you feel supported, cared for, understood, and accepted for who you are. Trust is a big part of this.
3. Commitment is the promise to stick by the other person through the ups and downs of the relationship.
These three qualities can be combined in different ways to make different kinds of relationships. For example, closeness without attraction is the kind of love we feel for best friends. We share secrets and personal stuff with them, and they stand by us. But we are not romantically interested in them.
Attraction without closeness is more like a crush. You ’re attracted to someone physically but don ’t know the person well enough yet to feel the closeness that comes from sharing personal experiences and feelings.
Romantic love is when attraction and closeness are combined. For people falling in love for the first time, it
can be hard to tell the difference between the intense, new feelings of physical attraction and the deeper closeness that goes with being in love.

Passage One
Love in Cross Culture
I fell in love with the minister’s son the winter I turned fourteen. He was not Chinese. For Christmas I prayed for the boy, Robert. When I found out that my parents had invited the minister’s family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried in panic. What wound Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners?
On Christmas Eve, my mother created abundant Chinese food. And then they arrived---the minister’s family and all my relatives. Robert greeted hello, and I pretended he was not worthy of existence.
Dinner threw me deeper into disappointment. My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table. Robert and his family waited patiently for a large plate to be passed to them. My relatives murmured with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish. Robert made a face. Then my father reached his chopsticks just below the fish eye and picked out the soft meat. “Amy, your favorite,” he said, offering me the tender fish cheek. I wanted to disappear.
At the end of the meal, my father leaned back and burped loudly, thanking my
mother for her fine cooking. “It’s a polite Chinese custom to show you’re satisfied,” explained my father to our astonished guests. Robert was looking down at his plate with a reddish face. The minister managed to bring up a quiet burp. I was shocked into silence for the rest of the night.
After everyone had gone, my mother said to me, “You want to be the same as American girls on the outside.” She hanged me an early gift. It was a miniskirt. “But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame.”
It was not until years later that I was able to fully appreciate her lesson and her purpose behind her particular menu. For Chinese Eve that year, she had chosen excellent Chinese food.

Passage Two
Love in American Families
Upon reaching an appropriate age, usually between 18 and 21 years old, children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life. After children leave home they often find social relationships and financial support outside the family. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married. Romantic love is most often the basis for marriage in the United States; young adults meet their future spouses through friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions. Although children choose their own spouse, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices.
In many families, parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves. A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another career. Sometimes children do precisely the opposite to what their parents wish in order to stick to their independence. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his self-government in his father’s workplace. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love in the American family is cultural value of self-reliance and independence.

Dialogue
Culture Difference
A: My name is Tang Ming. Glad to see you.
B: Glad to see you too. My name is Joe.
A: So, I heard you are from England. Are you studying Chinese here?
B: Yeah, this is my first year in China.
A: Are you getting used to your life in China? Sometimes it is a little bit hard for western students.
B: Yeah, you’re right. I grew up in England, and it is my first time to study abroad, so I need more time to get used to culture difference.
A: What is the most difficult thing for you to stay here?
B: I guess it is the custom. Lacking of knowledge about Chinese customs brings me troubles.
B: For example?
A: In western culture close friends and even family members thank each other for the slightest help or favor. It is very different from China! A simple task like opening a door is seen as expected behavior among friends. There is no need to thank!
B: That’s true. In China, there is no need to do that.
A:I’m quite afraid to do something impolite to my Chinese classmates just because of custom difference.
B:I can t otally understand it. You’d better make some Chinese friends and learn from them.
A: Umm. Good idea!

Cultural Exchange
Thanks to the means of modern transportation and communication, the world is getting smaller. The whole world community appears to be no more than a large global village, where the residents come together with different cultural backgrounds and values. While experiencing the inevitable cultural exchanges as well as cultural clashes, the “villagers” seek to live i n harmony.
In this modern world, the advanced culture of any nation has never been an isolated phenomenon, but the product of extensive exchanges with other cultures.
Of course, the root and main current of any culture must bear its own distinctive nationa l features. Cultural exchange is by no means a process of losing one’s own culture to a foreign culture, but one of enriching a nation’s own culture.
Through cultural exchange, different cultures can absorb and influence one another. Mutual influence is a very complicated phenomenon in the field of culture. Therefore, absorbing foreign culture is metaphorically a process of taking a bite, chewing, and digesting. We should adopt the principle of eliminating the false and retaining the true, discarding the dross and selecting the essential, exporting more and importing the best, and resisting bad influences. I don’t believe that such a practice will result in the disappearance of the particular features and styles belong to particular cultures. On the contrary, different cultures can learn from each other’s strengths to make up their own weaknesses and complement one another.
While absorbing the essence of a foreign culture, we should not be content with imitation without creation. Confusion with simple imitation will kill creation, and as such it will be impossible for us to scale new heights in art and impossible to present to the world excellent works of our own creation. Simple imitation is by no means equivalent to novelty and originality. Oppositely, novelty and originality result from the combination of modern and traditional styles, the combination of distinctive features of foreign countries with those of our own nation, and the combination of artistry and education.

Passage One
The Art of Gift-giving
International cooperation can be different. To make your partner relations better, you should not forget to give a few small gifts. But, what should you give?
Before presenting your gift, it is important to understand the customs of that country. A pack of cigars well received in China may not be appreciated in the United States, so do some research in the clients’ shoes and think about what they would like. Most would prefer to receive practical, useful and ethnic gifts. A pack of ethnic sweets would make an excellent gift for someone visiting China for the first time.
If your client appreciate art, an ethnic painting or a small craft would also be great. Give something that’s unique to your company, region or country to make your gift, and consequently you, more memorable. Make sure your gift is easily portable. Avoid giving anything too expensive; some will misunderstanding your kindness as an act of bribing. Also, try not to give anything that’s sharp or pointed. Finally, stay away from the gift cards.
Furthermore, you may have to pay attention to the finest details. For instance, do not wrap your gift in black wrapping paper. Put your gift in a gift bag so that it is easier to carry. If you can, get your gift professionally wrapped, or present it in a
presentable packaging. Present your gift with both hands, and do not forget to smile while doing so.
When should you present your gift? It should be at the end of your meeting. Do not leave your gift on your table while you are discussing business with your client. Keep it in a discrete place, and take it out just before your guest leaves. Not sure what to say? You could say something like “Thank you for coming in today, and please accept this as my gratitude towards you and your cooperation.” But, of course, you could improvise.

Passage Two
Wushu
Visitors to China are deeply impressed by the popularity of Wushu in this country. Going out early in the morning, they can see people doing this traditional form of exercise barehanded or with weapons in parks and on roadside open grounds. Mixed strength and ability with style and grace, their movements follow set patterns that are designed more for health-building than for self-defense.
Wushu, which literally means “martial arts” and is sometimes called “Kungfu” abroad, may be traced back to pre-historical times when our ancestors had to fight against wild animals and among themselves for existence and survival. Wushu is a very important aspect that represents the spirit of Chinese culture and art. According
to the philosophy of traditional Chinese Medicine, Wushu exercises consist of both “external” work, the former meaning movements of the body, the hands and the f eet and expressions of the eyes, and the latter being related to “the spirit”, willpower, vital energy and strength.” The two aspects are combined so as to achieve “a unity of body and mind.”
Wushu is very rich in forms and contents, including hundreds of styles and thousands of routines, each with its own distinctive features. Changquan is characterized by speed and vigor, while Taijiquan is noted for its slow and gentle movements. One category of Wushu forms is called Xiangxingquan, which portrays the movements and postures of various animals, as exemplified by Houquan (Monkey’s Shadow Boxing) and Tanglangquan. Then there is the humorous Zuiquan that describes a drunkard who is “drunk in appearance but not in mind” and is sober enough to outwit his opponent.
As Wushu is becoming worldwide popular, it’s a common wish of all Chinese people to watch Wushu competitions at the 29th Beijing Olympic Games. In 2008 Olympic Games, Wushu is neither an official event nor performing event, but it is allowed to hold a n international competition under Olympic Organizing Committee’s permission.
