22.(8分)Mark Rothko, one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, was born in Daugavpils, Latvia in 1903. His father immigrated to the United States, fearing that his son would be drafted (招募) into the Czarist army.
Mark stayed in Russia with his mother and elder sister; they joined the family later, arriving in the winter of 1913, after a 12-day voyage.
Mark moved to New York in the autumn of 1923 and found employment in the garment trade and took up residence on the Upper West Side. It was while he was visiting someone at the Art Students League that he saw students sketching a nude model. According to him, this was the start of his life as an artist. He was twenty years old and had taken some art lessons at school, so his initial experience was far from an immediate calling.
In 1936, Mark Rothko began writing a book, which he never completed about the similarities i n the children’s art and the work of modern painters. The work of modernists, which was influenced by primitive (原始的) art, according to him, could be compared to that of children in that “Child art transforms itself into primitivism (原始主义), which is only the child producing a mimicry (模仿) of himself.” However, in this same work, he said that “The fact that one usually begins with drawing is already academic. We start with the colors.”
It was not long before his multiform developed into the style he is remembered for; in 1949 Rothko exhibited these new works at the Betty Parsons Gallery. For critic Harold Rosenberg, the paintings were a revelation. After painting his first multiform, Rothko withdrew himself to his home in East Hampton on Long Island. The discovery of his definitive form came at a period of great grief; his mother Kate died in October 1948 and it was at some point during that winter that Rothko chanced upon the striking symmetrical (对称的) rectangular blocks of two to three opposing or contrasting, yet complementary colors (对称). As part of this new uniformity of artistic vision, his paintings and drawings no longer had individual titles: from this point on they were simply untitled, numbered or dated. However, to assist in distinguishing one work from another, dealers would sometimes add the primary colors to the name.

23.(8分)Created in 1998 by Casey and Shelley Black, the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center focuses on not only rescuing young abandoned wolves but educating the public.Unlike other centers, you can actually walk with the wolves and have exciting, hands﹣on interaction with them here. And so,we gathered one late winter morning to learn, prepare and walk.
Scrappy and Flora, our wolves that day, were brought to the center when only a few days old."They lived in the house with us for the first several months. We treated them like human babies, fed them and slept with them," said Shelley. So,they are totally used to people. However, these are wild animals. For that reason,Shelley and Casey explained, the walk is totally on the wolf's terms."We don't approach them, but if they come up to us,we can touch them."
With all this in mind,we headed for the woods. We were walking on a logging road when suddenly,Flora, all 60 pounds of her, hurried up to me and raised up on her legs. She was almost as tall as me.As she leaned in,put her huge muddy paws on my shoulders and sniffed my face, apparently she was saying hello in wolf talk.We walked farther, maybe half a mile, while Scrappy and Flora dashed in and out of the woods stopping to occasionally roll in the snow, dig for this or that and just play. Then we all headed into the trees to a picturesque stream where the wolves splashed, drank and had a great time.
One could point out that this whole adventure was staged and quite artificial. But the purpose,Casey and Shelley said,is to explain the wolves' place in the environment and, primarily,to let people know wolves don' t have to be universally feared﹣they really don' t hide secretly in the woods just waiting to eat people, but they' d rather avoid people, for the most part.
1、How is the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center different from others?
A.It trains and educates wild wolves.
B.It aims to rescue young abandoned wolves.
C.It raises wolves for commercial purposes.
D.It allows visitors to take a walk with wolves.
2、What can be inferred from Shelley and Casey's explanation in Paragraph 2?
A.The walk can be potentially dangerous.
B.The wolves have lost all their wildness.
C.People should get close to the wolves actively.
D.The wolves can read people's mind like human babies.
3、Why did Flora behave like that when she saw the author on the logging road?
A.To express curiosity.
B.To show friendliness.
C.To attract attention.
D.To seek companionship.
4、Why do Casey and Shelley organize such an adventure?
A.To advertise the center.
B.To publicize wolf hunting.
C.To promote environmental protection.
D.To clarify some conventional views of wolves.
24.(8分)Happy Birthday to Me (and My Mom)
Forty-three years ago my mother went into labour for the second time. It was either very late New Year’s Day or very early on the second day of 1969 depending on how you looked at it but either way, it was a full week past her due date when my mom woke up knowing it was time to wake my dad up, get dressed, pack up the car and head to the hospital. Her regular doctor was on vacation and when they reached the hospital they planned to deliver in were told that the doctor was on his way to another hospital so they should head there, in a neighbouring city. Most surprising to me now is that she felt well enough to attend a New Year’s party the pre vious night and stayed long enough to toast in the new year!
My mom and her family had immigrated to the United States just twenty years earlier from El Salvador. And that was a lucky thing for me. Not only did my mom gain access to a better education and career options here in the US for herself, each of her three daughters would also enjoy her access to quality maternity (孕产妇的) care. While the US is hardly the world leader in maternal health or birth outcomes, these days a woman faces a 1 in 2,100 risk of dying during her life and in El Salvador, it’s 1 in 350-6 times worse. In 1969, that difference was even greater.
However, I was pregnant with my second child in El Salvador six years ago when I realized how very different my life might have turned out if I’d lived there when I delivered my first child. I travelled down there with CARE, the humanitarian relief organization, whose efforts my mom had long supported, to see some of their principal programmes in action. Among them was one in particular that remains with me today. It was a water project where pregnant women, many of whom had walked miles to access this clean water, receive some basic care before or after childbirth. Here these women were, facing the exact same physical challenges as me but still carrying the full work load of the family and with little to no resources for information, care, transportation or comfort during or after their pregnancies.
By this time, I was all too aware of what a challenge childbirth could be. After delivering my daughter in 2003, I survived a hemorrhage (大出血), the leading childbirth-related complication that takes the lives of thousands of other mothers all over the world. One girl or woman dies every 90 seconds in pregnancy or childbirth from what is in most
cases a preventable death. I was as shocked as you are when I discovered this fact but I was also grateful. Grateful because I had been in the care of a team of health workers when I needed them most.
I thought of my mother’s life. While she had been born in a good hospital in San Salvador in the 1930’s, at that time pregnancy-related deaths were common even in the US. My great grandmother also hemorrhaged, only after delivering her fifth child and she died. Her husband, my mom’s grandfather was a physician at th e time. He would give up practising medicine forever when he couldn’t save her.
But it wasn’t only my mom and her family that I thought of as I considered my own fate and good fortune, it was
all those women I’d spent the day with in the rural community I’d visited with CARE. We’d made a connection that day, we mothers, as women. These women did not have access to the simple interventions (介入) that could insure their survival and that’s what concerned me. It did more than concern me, it woke me up and begge d this question, why should any one life be of different value than any other?
And so, I made the commitment right there and then to do all I could to improve maternal health and reduce the number of maternal deaths around the globe.

25.(10分)An image is worth a thousand kilos? Okay, so maybe not a thousand kilos, exactly, but a study shows how a photo diary can keep dieters motivated, making them more likely to achieve their target weight.
Elias Kuzmar Daza, a medical professional from Colombia, studied the motivation levels of patients on weight loss programs at a nutrition clinic.
Different measurements were taken of the patients each week, including body mass index (指标) food and exercise diaries, etc. to record their progress. In addition, full-body photographs were taken each week, which proved to be very motivating and a key factor in patients completing the full program.
Over the course of the sixteen-week program, a full ninety percent of patients, aged between 16 and 72, saw the treatment through to the end, with seventy percent successfully meeting their weight loss aims. Among those monitored, one measurement proved particularly motivating: waistline.
This finding indicates that the majority of the patients who attended the clinic did so motivated by image, rather than any underlying condition. It should be pointed out that eighty percent of them were female.
Another useful finding of this study was that patients did not necessarily need to attend the clinic in person for the program to be effective. A support line was set up, which patients could call to submit their measurements. They also took and sent their own full-body photographs to the researcher. Fifty percent of patients completed the program in this way.
Summarizing the findings, Kuzmar says: “What patients want is a photo, rather than cold numbers.” These p hotos serve as visual confirmation that all their hard work is paying off, encouraging them on to further weight loss.
1、What is the purpose of the study?
A.To show losing weight is very easy.
B.To compare several ways to lose weight.
C.To prove the effect of images in weight losing.
D.To see how many people can lose weight successfully.
2、How many patients in the clinic reached their weight-loss goals?
A.50%. B.70%.
C.80%. D.90%.
3、What can give people most motivation when they are trying to lose weight?
A.Friends’ encouragement. B.Others’ strong muscles.
C.Their slimmer waistline. D.Their standard blood pressure.
4、What must the patients do to complete the weight-loss program?
A.Go to the clinic every week.
B.Call to submit their measurements.
C.Report to the professional every day.
D.Take full-body photographs each week.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Welcom e to the column “English Writing” !
Recently the school website has set up a new column called “English Writing” which provides students with the chances to post their composition and communicate with each other. Not only can students improve their writing ability in this way, but they can strengthen their self-confidence.
The column has lots of advantages. It is the teacher’s guide online that has an advantage over the other columns. If necessary, the students can have a direct “ask and answer” with profes sional teachers. It is required that the composition should be related to the students’ life. What’s more, if it is organized well enough, the writer will be rewarded for it.
Hoping to the students’ participation.
Yours,
Li Ming。
