第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,40分)
A
Monday: Here I am, in the middle of nowhere. This camping trip idea is not getting off to a very good start. It’s raining and the tent leaks. The hiking seemed to take forever, and I still can’t understand how it could all have been up hill! How did I ever let my brother talk me into this? When we get home—if we ever get home—he’s going to have to do something great to get back on my good side. Maybe he should sponsor a shopping spree(狂购)at the mall!
Tuesday: Things are looking up. The sun came out today, so we were able to leave the tents and dry out. We’re camped at the edge of a small lake that I couldn’t see before because of the rain and fog. The mountains are all around us, and the forest is absolutely beautiful. We spent most of the day dragging out everything out of our backpacks or tents and putting it where the sun could dry it out. Later in the afternoon we tried to catch the fish for dinner, but the fish were smarter than we were. At night we built a fire and sang songs happily.
Wednesday: We hiked to the far side of the lake and climbed to the top of a small peak. From there we could see how high the other mountains were and how far the forest spread around us. On the way up we passed through a
snowfield!
Thursday: I caught my first fish! We followed the stream that fed the lake. After about two miles, we came to a section that Carol said looked “fishy”. She had a pack rod(竿), which can be carried in a backpack. I asked to cast it, and I caught a fish on my first try. Carol caught a few more. But they were just too pretty to eat for lunch so we put them back in the stream.
Friday: I can’t believe we are going home already. It will be nice to get a hot shower, sleep in a real bed, and eat junk food, but the trip has been wonderful. We’re already talking about another camping adventure next year where we canoe down a river. It’s hard to believe, but I think this city girl has a little country blood in her veins.

The Doll and the White Rose
I was walking around in a mall, when I saw a cashier hand this little boy some money back. The cashier said, “I’m sorry, but you don’t have enough money to buy this doll.” The li ttle boy seemed very disappointed.
I walked toward him and asked him who he wished to give this doll to. “It’s the doll that my sister wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her. But Santa Claus can’t bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it
to my sister when she goes there.” His eyes were so sad. “My sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.”
My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and continued, “I told Daddy to tell Mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall.”
I quickly reached for my wallet and sa id, “Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll.”
“OK, I hope I do have enough,” he said. I put some of my money with his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money.
Surprisingly, the little boy cried, “Thank you God for giving me enough money!” Then he looked at me and added, “I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that Mommy could give it to my sister. He heard me! I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn’t dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose!”
Then I remembered two days before a local newspaper reported an accident in which a woman and a little girl were badly injured. The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state. Was this the family of the little boy?
Two days after I met the little boy, I read in the newspaper that the woman had passed away. I couldn’t stop myself from going to the funeral. Teary-eyed, I felt that my life had been changed forever.

C
We’ve reached a strange—some would say unusual—point. While fighting world hunger continues to be the matter of vital importance according to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), more people now die from being overweight, or say, from being extremely fat, than from being underweight. It’s the good life that’s more likely to kill us these days.
Worse, nearly l8 million children under the age of five around the world are estimated to be overweight. What’s going on?
We really don’t have many excuses for our weight problems. The dangers of the problem have been drilled into us by public-health campaigns since 2001 and the message is getting through—up to a point.
In the 1970s, Finland, for example, had the highest rate of heart disease in the world and being overweight was its main cause. Not any more. A public-health campaign has greatly reduced the number of heart disease deaths by 80 per cent over the past three decades.
Maybe that explains why the percentage of people in Finland taking diet pills doubled between 2001 and 2005, and doctors even offer surgery of removing fat inside and change the shape of the body. That has become a sort of fashion. No won der it ranks as the world’s most body-conscious country.
We know what we should be doing to lose weight—but actually doing it is another matter. By far the most popular excuse is not taking enough exercise. More than half of us admit we lack willpower.
Oth ers blame good food. They say: it’s just too inviting and it makes them overeat. Still others lay the blame on the Americans, complaining that pounds have piled on thanks to eating too much American-style fast food.
Some also blame their parents—their genes. But unfortunately, the parents are wronged because they’re normal in shape, or rather slim.
It’s a similar story around the world, although people are relatively unlikely to have tried to lose weight. Parents are eager to see their kids shape up. Do as I say—not as I do.
63. What is the “strange” point mentioned in the first sentence?

B. WHO report shows people’s unawareness of food safety.
C. The good life is a greater risk than the bad life.
D. Starvation is taking more people’s lives in the world.
64. Why does the author think that people have no excuse for being
overweight?
A. A lot of effective diet pills are available.
B. They have been made fully aware of its dangers.
C. Body image has nothing to do with good food.
D. There are too many overweight people in the world.
65. The example of Finland is used to illustrate ______.
A. the cause of heart disease
B. the effectiveness of a campaign
C. the fashion of body shaping
D. the history of a body-conscious country
66. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Actions or Excuses?
B. WHO in a Dilemma
C. Overweight or Underweight?
D. No Longer Dying of Hunger

Students and Technology in the Classroom
I love my blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备)and truly communicate with others.
On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule —no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break
concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
67. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with____.
A. discussion topics
B. the author’s class regulations
C. the course material
D. others’ misuse of technology
68. The underlined word “engage ”i n para.4 probably means ____.
A. reject
B. accept
C. change
D. explore
69. According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ____.
A. help students to better understand complex themes
B. encourage students to have in-depth conversations
C. keep students from doing independent thinking
D. affect students’ concentration on course evaluation
70. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ____.
A. is quite stubborn
B. will give up teaching history
C. will change his teaching plan soon
D. values technology-free dialogues in his class

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The Value of Tears
Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. Tears leave you embarrassed and without energy. Still, crying is a fact of life, and your tears are very useful. Even when you're not crying, they make a film over the eye's surface. 71
When tears fall, they reduce stress. But we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions (情绪), afraid that once they lose control they'll never get it back.”72 After we cry, the feelings that caused the tears often disappear.
Sometimes people become much stressed and can't cry. Whatever emotion they are feeling—shock, anger, fear, or sadness—is being held back. But everyone has the need to cry. Psychologist Vera Diamond explains that her treatment often consists of giving people permission to cry. 73 Patients practice crying just to become used to expressing emotions. She suggests safe, private places to cry, like under the bedcovers or in the car. Crying is a way of reducing tension, but people don't like it when others cry because it makes them tense. 74 And they'll do just about anything to make you stop.
In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It's good not to cry during a tense business discussion. 75 You should also act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,”she adds, “Once your tears have taken away the stress, you can begin to think calmly of ways to deal with the problem.”
Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. If you find yourself near someone crying, deal with it. And never be afraid to cry yourself.
A.They too may be holding back a need to cry.
B.They cry for different reasons.
C.But once you're safely behind closed doors, don't just cry.
D.It contains a chemical against infection(炎症).
E.She gives crying exercises.
F.It forms in response to the stress on the surface of the eye.
G.The fact is that no emotion lasts forever.
