For Kim Duffy,
sending away her teenage daughter was the best hope for sa ving the girl's life.
Corinne, then 17, had been struggling with bulimia(贪食
症)and anorexia(厌食
症)for more than five years. Duffy and her husband, Terry, fou
nd a residential facility in Virginia,
and Corinne signed on for a two-
month stay in the summer of 2009.
Today,
Corinne's healthy and pursuing a master's degree in Colorado . She and her parents believe the holistic(整
体)approach and individualized focus were key to her recover y. And they know they had access to unique resources. "We were fortunate, "says Duffy. "We could pay for everything." But many can't. According to a report released in November 2 014 by the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, between 600,000 and one million Canadians suffer from an e ating disorder. Public in patient programs often won't admit pa tients until they're in life-
threatening condition. Private clinics often have a long waitlist s and high costs-
at Homewood, in Guelph, Ont., a room is $ 305 to S 360 per d ay.
The Duffs' struggle led then to connect other families with the quality of care they received in the United Sates. In late 2013, hey founded the WaterStone Clinic,
a private eating disorder center in Toronto.
Since the facility opened, 170 clients have received treatment.
They take yoga, do art therapy and participate in meal prepar ation, building real-
life skills with a support team. Programs run weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and notably, so far WaterStone has no waiting list.
But this approach is costly: approximately S 650 per day. Rea lizing that the price tag puts WaterStone out of reach for many , the Duffys created the WaterStone Foundation-
a charity that provides aid to patients who can't afford treatme nt the following year. Candidates are assessed by wo committ ees that make a decision based on clinical and financial need. Since 2014,the foundation has helped 100 people.
Duffy also wants to change the public system. In June of this year, the foundation awarded $170,000 to four Ontario hopit als offering creative treatment to eating disorder patients. "Ye s, people need private treatment," she says, “but it's important to help out on a broader scale, too."
24. Why did Duffy think they were fortunate?
A. They had enough money to ravel abroad.
B. They could afford the medical resources.
C. They happened to find a right hospital.
D. They met very experienced doctors.
25. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Public hospitals cannot treat patients with eating disorder.
B. Many people die from eating disorder in Canadian public h ospitals.
C. A lot of eating disorder patients have no access to proper tr eatment.
D. In private clinics eating disorder patients will receive timely treatment.
26. Which of the following patients will receive help from Wate rStone Foundation?
A. Poor ones who suffer from the disease.
B. Ones who are rejected by public hospitals.
C. Ones who are facing death.
D. old ones who are poor.
27. What do we know from Duffy's words in the last paragraph ?
A. Only private clinics can give proper treatment to the patient s.
B. Treatment of the disease in public hospitals should be impr oved.
C. She wants to cooperate with public hospitals to help the pa tients.
D. Public hospitals should do more to help people with eating disorder.

A shark moving around the coastline is normally a worrying si ght,but this waterborne drone(无人
机)threatens floating rubbish instead of people.
Developed by Dutch company RanMarine, the WasteShark ta kes nature as its inspiration with its whale shark-
like mouth. Responsible for collecting waste, the drone will be gin operations in Dubai Marina in November after a year of tri als with local partner Ecocoast.
According to RanMarine, the WasteShark is available in both
autonomous and remote-
controlled models. Measuring just over five feet by three-and-a-half feet(1.5 meters by 1.1 meter),
it can carry up to 352 pounds of rubbish(159.6 kg)and has an operational battery life of 16 hours.
By 2016 there were approximately 150 million tons of plastic i n the world's oceans. One paper from December 2014 estima ted that over a quarter of a million tons of ocean plastic polluti on was afloat.
"WasteShark also has the abilities to gather air and water qua lity data, remove chemicals out of the water such as oil,
and heavy metals,
and scan the seabed to read its depth and outlines,
"said Oliver Cunningham, one of the co-
founders of RanMarine. "Fitted with a collision-
avoidance system, the drone uses laser imaging detection an d ranging technology to detect an object in its path and stop o r back up if the object approaches."
"Our drones are designed to move through a water system, w hether it's around the perimeter(周
边) or through the city itself. The drones are that last line of de fense between the city and the open ocean," added Cunningh am. "WasteSharks are operating in Dubai, South Africa and th
e Netherlands and cost $ 17,000 for the remote-
controlled model and just under $ 23,000 for the autonomous model."
Dubai-
based operator Ecocoast has two WasteShark drones. Co-founder Dana Liparts says they will clean waterfronts for client s including hotels and environmental authorities and that Ecoc oast' intention is to have the collected rubbish recycled or upc ycled. However, Liparts argues that cleaning waterways does n't have a one-size-fits-
all solution and requires a combination of new technology, pre ventative measures and changing people's attitudes towards l ittering.
28. What do we know about the WasteShark?
A. It can frighten sharks away.
B. It is an ocean explorer.
C. It is a rubbish collector.
D. It can catch fish instead of people.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. The causes of ocean pollution.
B. The dangers of using plastics.
C. The severity of ocean garbage pollution.
D. The importance of ocean protection.
30. What will the WasteShark do with an approaching object?
A. Avoid crashing into it.
B. Break it into pieces.
C. Swallow it.
D. Fly over it.
31. Which of the following ideas does Liparts agree with?
A. The WasteShark should be used more widely.
B. More measures should be taken to make water clean.
C. The production cost of WasteSharks should be reduced.
D. People should take a positive attitude to new technology.【答案】28. C 29. C 30. A 31. B

A new study from brain researchers helps explain how the hu man brain evolved or changed over time, to permit people to s peak and write.
Michael Ullman, the lead researcher, a professor at Georgeto wn University Medical School in Washington, D.C, has been s tudying language learning for more than 20 years.
Ullman says his research shows that the human brain does n ot have a special area or system for making language. Over ti me we have simply reused or co-opted(指

"This study examines the theoretical framework(准

Ullman, Hamrick and the rest of the team looked at data from 16 other studies on language. They found that people learn la nguage using two memory systems: declarative and procedur al. Memorizing vocabulary, for example, is a declarative mem ory process. But learning grammar is, mostly, a procedural m emory process.
"Declarative memory, in humans at least, is what we think of a s learning memory', such as, 'Oh, remember what you said la st night' or things like that. And procedural motor memory is w
hat we often call motor memory' such as how you learn to ride a bicycle." Or, Ullman adds, "These procedural memory skills become so deeply leaned that we are no longer aware that w e are doing them."
However, Ullman explains that the two long-
term memory systems can share tasks. And, he ads, the adult brain uses the systems to learn language a bit differently tha n a child's brain.
"Adult language learners of a second language may use their declarative memory for using grammar patterns. They think a bout it purposefully. For a child, the grammar may come more naturally. They don't have to think about the grammar rules b efore speaking."
In addition to language learners, Ullman's study could help pe ople who have a brain injury that affects speaking and writing. This knowledge can also help those who have learning disabi lities such as dyslexia(阅读障
People with dyslexia have difficulty recognizing words an
d symbols accurately.

D. By referring to data from other studies on language.
33. Which of the following is an example of "motor memory"?
A. Learning to make a model plane.
B. Remembering the grammar patterns
C. Repeating what you heard.
D. Memorizing what you read.
34. What does the underlined word "it" refer to?
A. Declarative memory.
B. An adult language learner.
C. Using grammar patterns.
D. A second language.
35. What's the main idea of the text?
A. Ullman has advanced our language understanding.
B. A new research helps people learn a new language.
C. Learning memory is more active than motor memory.
D. Human beings learn language in pre human area of brain.【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. D

Ullman, Hamrick and the rest of the team looked at data from 16 other studies on language.

And procedural motor memory is what we often call motor me mory' such as how you learn to ride a bicycle."可知,程序性运动记忆就是我们常说的运动记忆,比如学习骑自行车等技能,故选A。

【34题详解】
词义猜测题。

根据倒数第二段第一句话
"Adult language learners of a second language may use their declarative memory for using grammar patterns.可知,成年语言学习者在学习第二语言时,是刻意地在使用语法句式。

所以it是指代using grammar patterns,故选C。

Ullman says his research shows that the human brain does n ot have a special area or system for making language. Over ti
me we have simply reused or co-opted(指
派) parts of our brain for language.

"Adult language learners of a second language may use their declarative memory for using grammar patterns.可知,成年语言学习者在学习第二语言时,是刻意地在使用语法句式。

所以it是指代using grammar patterns,故选C。

The sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you hav e for getting rid of any source of stress in your life. ___36___ We can't over-
estimate the importance of the sense of humor too much. In f act, making work fun helps employees perform best and provi de quality work.
___37___ Telling jokes and stories and using team-
building games in companies make people have more fun at work. Some companies even have talent shows or hold dance or sports competitions. It just gives employees a break in the day and a chance to laugh at themselves.
___38___ Humor should be about laughing with rather than la ughing at others. We all have probably heard jokes that seem ed to bother or hurt others. For example, jokes making fun of employees for their weight, race, religion, etc. are not only har mful to the person, but also can create an unfriendly working environment.
Even if the jokes were intended to be humorous, they may not be received that way. I have even heard speakers make sligh t dirty jokes on the audience, thinking they would be seen as c ool. In fact the audience thought the speakers had no taste. _ __39___ In another case, I heard about a manager who was o ut partying with co-
workers and kidding about how the boss liked certain people more than others. Such jokes actually had damaging effects o n people in the company.。
