'And your ears,' continues Darnay Duck, 'Now can I have my beer and my sandwich please?'

“Time,” says the proverb, “is money”. This means that every moment well spe nt may put some money into our pockets. If our time is usefully employed, it will either turn out some useful and important piece of work which will fetch its price in the market, or it will add to our experience and increase our capacities so as to enable us to earn money when the proper opportunity comes.
Our life is nothing more than our time. To kill time is therefore a form of suicide. We are shocked when we think of death, and we spare no pains, no trouble, and no expense to preserve life. But we are too often indifferent to the loss of an hour or of a day, forgetting that our life is the sum total of the days and of the hours we live. Our life is a brief period measuring some seventy or eighty years in all. But nearly one third of this has to be spent in sleep; some years have to be spent over our meals; some in making journeys on land and voyages by sea; some in merry making. Now if all these years were to be deducted(扣除) from the term over which our life extends, we shall find about twenty or thirty years at our disposal for active work. Whoever remembers this can never willingly waste a single moment of his life.
All time is precious, but the time of our childhood and of our youth is more precious than any other portion of our existence, for those are the periods when we can acquire knowledge and develop our capacities. If we allow these morning hours of life to slip away, we shall never be able to recover the loss. Just as money laid out at interests doubles and trebles itself in time, so the precious hours of childhood and youth, if properly used, will yield us incalculable advantages.
25. Why does the author quote the proverb “time is money” in the beginning?
A to explain the meaning of the proverb
B to show how precious time is
C to compare the importance of time and life
D to warn us not to waste time
26. According to the author, which of the following is right?
A A day or an hour wasted is so much life lost.
B We shouldn’t spend one third of our life sleeping
C Merry making is something unnecessary in our life.
D We have less than twenty or thirty years to do active work
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A Time is money
B The value of time
C How we spend our time
D The morning hours of life
28. In the last paragraph, the author warns that _____.
A one must do his best to acquire knowledge and develop its ability when young
B young people must deposit enough money to make large interests in the future
C the morning hours are important for the young and shouldn’t be wasted
D the time of childhood and youth should be used to acquire countless advantages.
C
The latest revelations from the NSA files, supplied by Edward Snowden and reported on by Glen Greenwald’s The Intercept, have shown that US and UK spy agencies could have the ability to listen in on billions of mobile phone calls from around the world. What’s happened?
The biggest manufacturer of Sim cards in the world has reportedly been hacked into by the US NSA and UK GCHQ.
The security agencies stole the encryption keys(密码) that are built into every one of the Sim cards made by the Dutch firm Gemalto.
What does this mean?
With the encryption keys for Sim cards, the US and UK security services can potentially listen in on any conversation across any network that uses the compromised(缺乏抵抗力的)Sim cards.
How could they listen in?
The keys allow the security services to decode voice communications sent between a mobile phone and a mobile mast(天线杆), which carries the call to the receiver. To pick up the call they can use an aerial(天线)placed in the neighbourhood of the caller. They will have to be relatively close to the mobile phone user, but an aerial could be placed anywhere and would not have to be visible.
Who is affected?
Gemalto supplies 2bn Sim cards annually to 450 mobile phone providers globally across 85 countries. Most mobile phone providers will have used Gemalto Sim cards at some point, meaning anyone with a Sim in their mobile phone could be affected. What can be done?
There is very little that can be done . That means someone could be listening in on any conversation had via the mobile phone network.
Users can separately encrypt their voice and text communications using messaging services such as Apple’s iMessage, Facebook’s WhatsApp or similar secure services.
29. What happened?
A US and UK spy agencies listened in on billions of mobile phone calls from around
the world.
B Sim card database hack gave US and UK spies access to billions of cell phones.
C the Dutch firm Gemalto gave away the encryption keys that are built into every
one of the Sim cards.
D Edward Snowden and Glen Greenwald’s The Intercept stole the encryption keys from
Gemalto.
30. How could the US and UK spy agencies listen in?
A They use a mast to receive and decode the call.
B They use an aerial to receive and decode the call.
C They use an aerial to receive the call and the encryption keys to decode the call
D They use a mobile mast to receive the call and encryption keys to decode the call.
31. Who is possibly affected?
A One who doesn’t use a Sim card made by Gemalto.
B One who separately encrypts his voice and text communications using messaging
services
C One who stays far away from any aerial.
D One who is at conversation via the mobile phone network.
D
Vacations are supposed to be welcome by children and parents both. But they seem to have become a source of tension for parents, as they are worried about their children spending hours on iPads and mobile phones, surfing the Internet or playing online games.
Their concern is not groundless, though, because addiction to electronic gadgets(装置) or the Internet could do harm to students' health. More importantly, spending hours on electronic gadgets is a waste of time not only because the same time could be spent more productively, but also because it stops face-to-face interaction with parents and peers.
The disadvantages of addiction to electronic gadgets cannot be overlooked. What therefore children need is proper guidance from parents on how to use electronic gadgets and on the Internet. Parents also need to negotiate with their children about how long they can play with electronic devices. This is important because it's almost impossible to stop them from using computers and mobile phones. Since children tend to copy their parents, their role models, actions, parents should not be glued to phones or tablets for long; they must also avoid watching TV for long hours. Instead, they should spend as much time as possible with their children, teaching them the valuable lessons of life and helping them with their homework.
Since children's normal routines are to change during vacations, parents should ask them to set a different timetable which could include doing housework, getting physical exercise and playing sports, pursuing their hobbies and doing holiday homework. For children who have abundant free time and relatively little homework during vacations, their parents can, for example, take them on hiking trips or make them play more outdoor games. This will not only ensure children
remain physically fit and focused on studies, but also leave them little time to play online games and chat on mobile phones.
32. Why do parents worry about their children spending time on electronic gadgets
and the Internet?
A Because it threats students’ health.
B Because children should spend more time on productive work.
C Because children may not have time to have face-to-face communications.
D All of the above
33. We can infer from the passage that____.
A children can play on the electronic gadgets and the internet but should pay
attention to the usage and the time limit.
B parents shouldn’t spend long time on TVs,but they are free to chat on phones
or play online games.
C children should observe their normal routines even on vacations to focus on
their study and keep healthy.
D going on hiking trips or playing more outdoor games is a must for children
on vacations.
34. How many ways are suggested for parents to deal with their children spending
time on electronic gadgets and the Internet?
A Two
B Three
C Four
D Five
35. The passage aims to_____.
A tell parents not to worry about their children spending time on mobile phones,
tablets and the internet
B tell parents how to make their children’s vacations interesting and worthwhile.
C suggest a few ways for children to stop being addicted to electronic gadgets
and the internet
D advise parents how to help their children keep away from electronic gadgets
and the Internet and have a meaningful vacation.

The wildly spread news on the Internet that civil servants salaries are being raised was "confirmed"
Raising the salaries of public servants has been a sensitive issue for years.
36 Apart from their salaries, public servants are seen as a group that enjoys some tempting welfares. They enjoy government-subsidized housing, free healthcare and better education for their children.
37 However, the prices of consumer products, including essentials - from vegetables and fruits to pork and beef - have risen considerably over the past decade.
38 As prices keep rising, unchanged salary means the decline of their incomes. Some government employees' pay checks, accidentally leaked from time to time, also indicate they are not paid as well as many people believe.
It is unfair for civil servants not to be paid according to the importance of the work they do. 39 But it does not mean that all government employees, especially the ordinary ones, have illegal sources of income. The country is making continuous efforts to fight corruption and promote frugality(节俭).
40 It especially matters for those at the mid and lower levels who depend entirely on their salaries for a living. It will also mark a big step toward building a normal pay-rise mechanism tuned to national economic growth and prices.
A People believe that public servants are very well rewarded.
B Any news about public servants’ pay rise will draw criticism
C Government employees' salaries have not been raised since 2003.
D And there is a nearly 10-fold increase in housing prices in some big cities.
E The wage adjustments will be warmly welcomed by China's large army of public
servants.
F Some argue that some civil servants have access to "gray incomes" apart from their
normal salaries.
G Some people even think government employees also get an opportunity to make “grey
incomes”.

范文
There is no denying that we are eager for golden chances to be successful in life. However, many people are not aware that chances are always for those who get well prepared. I didn’t realize it until I went to high school.
Soon after I became a senior one student, a singing competition was to be held in school. I love singing but I was very shy then and had never sung at the top of my voice in public. I could only sing to myself most of the time. Somehow, I wanted to have a try. When I talked about it with my parents, they inspired me to follow my inner voice and told me as long as I got well prepared, I would make it. With their encouragement, I became confident and practiced hard after class.
Sometimes, I would turn to my music teacher for help. When I felt I was ready, the day came. Standing on the stage, I took a deep breath and began to sing with my full emotions. It turned out that I won the first prize .
This experience has taught me a precious lesson in my life. If you are not successful yet, most pr obably you haven’t been well prepared. Once you have, chances will surely favor you.。
