六、阅读理解
13. The number of giraffes is becoming smaller across Africa, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The total population has
dropped by 40 percent in the last 15 years. Surprisingly, even scientists haven’t given much attention to giraffes. We are learning more about their ecology, but what we know is still way behind what we know about other species. “It’s a silent extinction,” said Dr. Julian Hennessy, a wildlife scientist.
“The main reason for the smaller number of giraffes is their loss of living places,” said Hennessy, “as an increasing part of land is used for farming. But hunting also has a big influence.” Y ou might wonder why hunters would focus on giraffes. First of all, once a giraffe is brought down, there is lots of meat with a small amount of effort. Besides, there is another thing encouraging the hunting. In Tanzania, Hennessy says, the latest word on the street is that eating giraffe meat could cure AIDS. Fresh giraffe heads and bones can be sold at prices of up to $140 per piece.
Another widespread misconception about giraffes is that they are everywhere. Look at kids’ books which are full of giraffes. They are always in zoo collections. They can be seen easily, so you don’t think we have to worry about them. But the truth is that they are in danger of extinction. There is a lack of right and true data.
Hennessy and other researchers are now pulling together the data needed to improve the situation of the entire giraffe species and all nine subspecies (亚种). The information will be used to change the giraffe’s listing on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, which now lists the species as of “least concern” but two subspecies as “endangered”. “It’s a lot of work to gather the necessary information,” Hennessy says. “And several other giraffe subspecies will be recommended for endangered listings next year or the year after.” He hopes that the world will finally start to take notice of how endangered these beloved animals have become.
1. By saying “It’s a silent extinction”, Hennessy tells us that ______.
A.giraffes are unpopular in Africa
B.the giraffe is always silent in daily life
C.the ecology of Africa needs more attention
D.the extinction occurs without enough attention
2. What has caused the high price of giraffe meat in Tanzania?
A.The country’s custom.B.The illegal international trade.
C.The cost of hunting a giraffe.D.The idea that it’s a cure for AIDS.
3. The misconception in Para. 3 can be corrected by ______.
A.preventing illegal hunting in Africa
B.rewriting kids’ books about giraffes
C.providing reliable data about giraffes
D.spreading scientific knowledge of AIDS
4. The final purpose of Hennessy’s great effort is to ______.
A.collect more information about giraffes
B.raise public awareness of protecting giraffes
C.prove giraffes will disappear in the next few years
D.work with the International Union for Conservation of Nature

文章介绍山雀也可能成为时尚的追求者。
Sonja Wild和Lucy Aplin在《行为生态学与社会生物学》上发表的一项研究表明,如果有机会,它们会用本季必备的颜色装饰巢穴。
16. Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only super fans of fashion. Tits (山雀) can be fashion-victims, too, apparently. A study, published in
Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology by Sonja Wild and Lucy Aplin, shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have color.
Dr Wild and Dr Aplin were following up work published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various colored balls of wool out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season, integrated into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favored varied from season to season. This suggested that the color chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until Dr Wild and Dr Aplin came across it while following up on a different study. The study noted that, during any given breeding (繁殖) season, the blue tits they were investigating tended to integrate the same herbal plants into their nests regardless of how abundant those herbs actually were. This, too, suggested fashion-following-and it likewise led Dr Wild and Dr Aplin to infer that birds were studying the nests of others and copying them. They therefore set out to rerun Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue, great and marsh tits in a wood near the institute. Of the 68 tits ‘nests built that season in the experimental areas, 26 contained wool, including 18 of the color of wool chosen by the first nest builder.
Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend” when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains unclear. Dr Wild and Dr Aplin suspect the trendsetters are older birds, and younger ones simply follow. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are random. A bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
1. What do we know about tits from the first two paragraphs?
A.Tits choose the same color all the time.
B.Tits suffer a lot from following fashion.
C.Tits tend to copy others in building their nests.
D.Tits like to follow fellow birds’ behavior in most cases.
2. Why did Dr Wild and Dr Aplin rerun William’s experiment?
A.To offer guidance for William.
B.To study birds’ nests.
C.To prove birds’ modelling behavior.
D.To investigate bird breeding.
3. What can we learn about Dr Wild and Dr Aplin’s experiment?
A.They believed older tits chose colors at random.
B.They knew exactly why tits followed the first nest builder.
C.They discovered most tits used wool in building their nests.
D.They assumed older tits were the ones to lead the trend.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Tits: Fashion Followers
B.Nest Building: Colors First
C.Birds: Human Followers
D.Scientific Research: Numbers First

4 if you explain to them your annoyance and how the added stress will be counter-productive (产生反效果的) for your exam performance.
It may be a long time since your parents were at school so they may find it difficult to understand your situation. I remember the days when I endlessly studied for exams, worrying before the big day came. 5 , instead of worrying about the future consequences of any result. As a general
rule for exams, try to make sure you have a schedule that allows you time to relax. I found this incredibly useful in helping me keep focused.
