The Emperor's New Clothes
Once upon a time, there was an emperor who was so vain and so fond of new clothes that he spent all his time considering and admiring them. One day, two tailors arrived in the imperial city and announced that they were skilled weavers. They said that they could make the most beautiful fabric in the world, and that it was so special that it was only visible to the wise and intelligent.
The news soon spread throughout the land and reached the emperor’s ears. He immediately summoned the two tailors to make him a luxurious suit of clothes using this fabric. The tailors set up their looms and pretended to be busy weaving, but in reality they did nothing at all.
The emperor sent his courtiers to see how the work was progressing, and the tailors pretended to show them the fabric, saying, “Look! This is the special fabric that can only be seen by the wise and intelligent.” The courtiers, not wanting to appear foolish, praised the fabric. The emperor himself soon went to examine the tailors’ work and marveled at the invisible fabric.
Finally, the tailors said that they had finished the suit
of clothing and presented it to the emperor. The emperor, eager to show off his new clothes, went out in a parade wearing nothing at all. Everyone in the crowd, not wanting to appear foolish, pretended to admire the beautiful clothes. But a small child, too young to understand what was going on, said, “But the emperor is wearing nothing!”
At last, the people realized the truth and the emperor had to admit that he had been deceived.。
