18.(★★★)The rise of the Internet has been one of the most transformative developments in human history, comparable in impact to the invention of the
printing press and the telegraph. Over two billion people worldwide now have
access to vastly more information than ever before, and can communicate with each other instantly, often using Web-connected mobile devices they carry everywhere. But the Internet's tremendous impacts have only just begun.
"Mass adoption of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting social, cultural, and political transformations in history, and unlike earlier periods of change, this time the effects are fully global," Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book-The New Digital Age.
Perhaps the most profound changes will come when the five billion people worldwide who currently lack Internet access get online. The authors do an
excellent job of examining the implications of the Internet revolution for individuals, governments, and institutions like the news media. But if the book has one major shortcoming, it's that authors don't spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these weeping changes.
In their book, the authors provide the most authoritative volume to date that describes-and more importantly predicts-how the Internet will shape our lives in
the coming decades. They paint a picture of a world in which individuals, companies, institutions, and governments must deal with two realities, one physical, and one virtual.
At the core of the book is the idea that "technology is neutral, but people aren't." By using this concept as a starting point, the authors aim to move beyond the now familiar optimist vs. pessimist dichotomy (对立观点) that has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the Internet will ultimately be good or bad for society. In an interview with TIME earlier this week,Cohen said although he and his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet, they've also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online, particularly with respect to personal privacy and state monitoring.
(1)What do Schmidt and Cohen think the influence of the Internet will be?
A. Incredible.B. Amazing.C. Worldwide.D. Exciting.
(2)What can we learn about the book The New Digital Age from the article?
A. It is only written by Cohen without the help of Schmidt.
B. It pays special attention to the implications of the new media.
C. It doesn't refer to the tremendous impacts of the Internet technology.
D. It is perfect except the lack of an objective evaluation of the role of
Internet businesses.
(3)What's the best title of this article?
A. The beginning of the digital age
B. The Internet doesn't hurt people
C. The benefits of the new technology
D. The Internet shapes our life positively
19.(★★★)The Italian economy is experiencing an unexpectedly strong recovery. The latest good news came on September 12th with the release of figures showing that the national unemployment rate had fallen 0.4 percentage points during the second quarter to 11.2%. The day before, the government's statisticians reported a 4.4% year-on-year increase in industrial output. Currently Italian GDP
is growing at 1.5% a year. That is still modest-less than the 2.2% being achieved by the euro zone as a whole. But the gap has been narrowing. Is the Italian economy, which for years has been a [brake] on the progress of the single-
currency area, at last getting back up to speed?
Italy's prime minister, Paolo Gentiloni of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), said the rise in industrial production "would have been unthinkable only
two years ago". But lie might just as properly have chosen a much longer time span:the Italian economy has been wallowing in the shallows for almost two decades. It repeatedly grew more slowly than other European economies in the good times and shrank faster in the bad ones. The financial and euro crises of 2008-11 made
things a lot worse. But the underlying (潜在的) problems, which include low productivity, too few big corporations, sky-high public debt, a fragmented (支
离破碎的) banking system, limited competition, slow civil justice and underfunded, underperforming universities, were all handicaps before.
These structural shortcomings persist and make it hard to be obviously optimistic. Most economists agree Italy is, to a large extent, benefiting from the broader rise in Europe. It has long depended heavily on exports, and Germany and France are its biggest customers. But important changes have been introduced. A state bail-out (紧急援助) in July of Italy's oldest bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, and the rescue of two lenders in the Veneto region has left the financial sector looking much healthier. The banks have also begun offloading
a mountain of bad loans. Oxford Economics, a think-tank, calculates that deals
so far announced suggest 60bn~70bn (﹩72bn-84bn), or about a third of the total, can be sold off by the end of the year. That in turn should encourage hankers to lend more freely, stimulating further growth.
Arguably, the biggest potential disadvantage is not economic, but
political. Structural reforms usually anger vested interests. They need governments with agreed programmes and stable majorities, able to undergo temporary unpopularity. Italy's next election, which has to be held by May, is likely to produce anything but. After being mauled by the Constitutional Court,
the electoral laws-one for each of the houses of parliament-are based largely on proportional representation. Unless new rules can he agreed before next spring (and there is no real sign yet that they can), the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) should win 25-30% of the seats. Since the M5S refuses to co-operate with any of the mainstream parties, it could force the formation of a government that includes different elements of the right and left. The most likely alternative on current poll showings is a conservative minority coalition including Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party, the protectionist Northern League and a smaller party with its roots in neo-fascism. The chances of such a government agreeing on a liberal reform agenda are remote.
(1)What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. The economy of Italy is on the way to recover.
B. Italian economic development is increasing rapidly.
C. The Italian economy is falling into decline.
D. The unemployment in Italy is rather severe and upsetting.
(2)Which of the following is close in meaning to the underlined word 'brake' in Paragraph one?
A. Increase rapidly.
B. Decline slowly.
C. Shrink increasingly.
D. Develop slowly.
(3)What can we infer from what Italy's prime minister says?
A. It was the financial and euro crises that made the Italian economy worse.
B. The Italian industrial production is undergoing a period of decline.
C. The Italian industrial production has been in serious situation in the past two decades.
D. There exists some serious problems contributing to the decline of Italian economy.
(4)What attitude does the author of this article have towards the liberal reform of Italy?
A. Neutral.B. Negative.C. Indifferent.D. Objective.
20.(★★★★★)In America now, there is one challenge that we both see clearly and are deeply concerned about: too many young people are not on a path to meaningful employment that will enable them to join the middle class. We see it when students drop out of school and struggle to obtain even a minimum wage
job. And we see it when well-paying technical jobs go unfilled because applicants don't have the necessary skills.
Millions of Americans have come to appreciate the value of four-year college degrees. These degrees remain as important as ever. Yet only half of high school graduates who go on lo four-year colleges end up completing a bachelor's degree within six years.
Besides, the social and economic challenges the young people in America face
have been [exacerbated] with the growing high unemployment. Over five million young people are neither working nor in school. The youth unemployment rate is over 11 percent; for young African Americans it jumps to over 20 percent. With many young people out of work or stuck in dead-end, low-wage and low-skill jobs, economic growth slows and social challenges increase.
Universities must do more to support students of all backgrounds who arrive at their campuses. Nevertheless, to deal with youth unemployment and support the needs of today's economy, students should be informed about all of their education options, including college and career pathways that don't include pursuing a four-year degree immediately. Students connected to higher education and high-quality training programs will have an opportunity to find a way out of poverty and for their career development. This approach is needed very much. Economists project that by 2020, more than 60 percent of jobs will require more than a high school diploma. However, only about half of those jobs will require a four-year degree-the other half will not.
Educators need to recognize that businesses have a high demand for skilled workers, whether they're robotics technicians or licensed practical nurses, and better align (使一致) what they teach with the skills employers greatly
need. Similarly, business leaders need to support the education system as it teaches today's skills and helps students develop into critical thinkers and life-long learners. Many students who start on a technical training path will have opportunities to go on to earn four-year degrees in the years to come.
To address the youth unemployment crisis, we are committed to increasing the number of young people who get on a pathway to economic success by being college and career ready.
To do this, first, we need to transform how US states and cities develop career-focused education programs. Business and non-business organizations in America are launching a multimillion (数百万) dollar project for US states to expand access to career-pathway programs that can lead to high-skill, well- paying jobs. Awarding funds to US states will encourage them to carry out career and technical education programs that correspond to the needs of area employers. High-quality, strict career technical programs would arm students with the skills to work as nursing technicians or IT specialists.
Second, we need to do away with the stigma (污名) attached to career and technical education. Classes designed for robotics, medical science, and coding provide skills that employers greatly need. From Detroit to Baltimore to New Orleans, we need to make greater investments throughout the US in developing new and effective models of career-focused education in line with the needs of industries like healthcare, finance and construction.
Recent education reforms are making progress. But this will not solve the problem for young people who are not going to college immediately after high school. Now is the time for greater private and public focus on equipping young people with the skills and experiences to be career-ready. Without this, a shot at the middle class will continue to be out of reach.
(1)What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Americans never attach great importance to college education.
B. Many young Americans are incapable of completing their own work.
C. Many young Americans fail to be well-educated.
D. The number of people in America's middle class is shrinking.
(2)The underlined word "exacerbated" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning
to .
A. presented B. worsened C. formed D. controlled
(3)"This approach" in Paragraph 4refers to .
A. supporting students of all backgrounds
B. involving students in high-level trainings
C. choosing proper career paths for students
D. informing students of their education options
(4)How should educators face the youth unemployment according to the passage?A. By making the knowledge more practical.
B. By developing students into critical thinkers.
C. By encouraging students to have further education.
D. By increasing the number of career-ready students.
(5)According to the passage, the career education in America .
A. has been accepted by many Americans
B. agrees with the needs of area employers
C. is to be financed on a large scale
D. gains little attention from businesses
(6)The passage mainly argues about how to .
A. get well-paying jobs in America
B. develop career education in America
C. reform college education system in America
D. increase the youth employment in America

21.(★★★)Your grandchildren do more than make you smile-they can help you stay sharper, be more active, and live longer.
You stay sharp
Spending just the right amount of time with grandchildren could sharpen your cognitive skills. When Australian researchers studied 120 grandmothers, they found that those who helped care for grandchildren one day per week scored highest on memory and other mental tests. But those who spent five or more days a week taking care of grandchildren performed significantly worse. "Interaction with other people could cause stimulation of certain nerve pathways that are beneficial to our brain," says Sharon Brangman, MD, a board member of the Health and Aging Foundations at the American Geriatrics Society. "But we also know stress can
impact brain power and memory. People who are grandparenting too much may have
high stress levels and therefore not getting that cognitive benefit."
You are more active
Taking a grandbaby on a neighborhood stroll or running around the yard with
older kids benefits the child's health and your own. In a 2011 AARP report, 58 percent of grandparents said they participated in physical activities such as playing sports, exercising, and gardening with their grandchildren, and 55 percent reported going on outings to museums and amusement parks. "Grandparents
are more likely to get up, get dressed, walk somewhere, and be physically active," says Kristine Arthur, MD, an internist at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center
in Fountain Valley, Calif. "One of the biggest things I tell older adults is to not stop moving, even if it's a small activity."
You keep learning
Getting involved in your grandchildren's activities can help your brain. "One thing that's recommended to prevent memory loss in seniors is playing children's puzzles and games, such as flipping over cards to remember things," says
Dr. Arthur. Learning new technology with your grandchildren offers similar benefits. A University of Arizona study found that seniors taught how to use Facebook and who were asked to post messages once a day scored 25 percent higher on cognitive and social tests after eight weeks than those who kept a virtual diary or didn't do anything. "With memory decline being one of the biggest things people fear, any time you learn something new, it's a big deal," says Dr. Arthur.
You have a stronger immune system
Hugging or holding hands with your grandchildren can strengthen immunity and help you age better. "When people are exposed to more touch, they often have a decrease in inflammatory cells and an increase in white blood cells, the fighter cells," says Dr. Arthur. A University of Virginia study found that hand holding can reduce pain and lower blood pressure, and related research has linked hugs
with higher levels of oxytocin and decreased stress levels. "A kiss or holding hands gives a sense of calmness, peacefulness, and security if you're under stress," says Waller Nieri, MD, a geriatrician at Banner Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Ariz. "Relieving stress delays the shortening of telomeres, associated with aging."
You rediscover a sense of purpose
Getting older can mean losing connections with friends or family members who have moved or passed away. According to the Pew Research Center, 17 Percent of older adults ages 65 and older feel lonely and about 10 percent feel unneeded or ns though they're a burden. "Grandchildren counteract that social isolation and loneliness," says Dr. Nieri. "They give older people a sense of belonging and responsibility. It's good for their self-esteem that they're taking care of their grandchildren."
You're motivated to take care of yourself
When a grandchild enters the picture, you may start to think about future events you want to help celebrate-from first steps to college graduation. "The sad
thing with a lot of seniors is that they don't want to care about themselves," says Dr. Arthur. But they wan I to be around for their grandchildren's milestones. They'll actually start taking care of themselves by eating better or taking their medication."
Keeps you social
Having grandchildren around you a lot can help to fight off loneliness. It Helps you live a socially active lifestyle by not only interacting with kids, but it will also help you interact with people your age. You can bond with other grandparents.
