三、阅读理解(共20小题, 每小题2分, 计40分)
(一) 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

A
You draw, you paint, or you carve sculptures. It matter—everyone is an artist!
The case for
We look at the Mona Lisa or a Picasso’s painting, and we say, “That’s art.” But what about the amazing graffiti (涂鸦) on your street? What about photographs posted online by your friends? What about your school art display? You work hard, and it’s great. So, is that art? To me, art is anything that’s creative. Of course, I like going to famous museums. But I also like drawing pictures of my friends. I’m not very good, but I’m creative. I’m very interested in it, and my friends like it. Most of all, I like it!
Jane, age 15
The case against
I like visiting art museums too. Why? Because I like looking at good art. Art is not the drawings of four-year-old children. It isn’t painting your body crazy colours and standing on the street. And it certainly isn’t graffiti. Some people say, “If it’s creative and cool, it’s art.” I don’t agree. Art is the result of hard work and study. My aunt is an artist. She studied in an art school for six years. She doesn’t make much money, but sometimes her sculptures are on display. Her art is great. Art is hard, and not many people can do it well.

Many children today live in unsafe places. They may live where wars have been fought or where there is a lot of crime. Play for Peace is an organization formed to help these children. It does so by bringing kids and adults together. For what? To make a more peaceful world.
Places where Play for Peace works include Northern Ireland, India, and Guatemala. Kids from different backgrounds come together to play games. Some of the games encourage them to work together and to learn about one another. While playing, kids begin to understand their different ways of thinking and doing things.
As kids in the programme get older, Play for Peace teaches them to be leaders. They become advisers. The older kids lead the games for the younger kids. One leader called Mandeep from a small village in India described her experience. “I didn’t realize that there was a larger world until I joined Play for Peace ... It was a big challenge for me. But I grew to feel safe and like them even though they were different from me.”
Play for Peace works because it brings kids together. They have fun and learn how to get along with others. Many kids who take part find that they have much in common, and then they become friends!

A. Project Hope.
B. ORBIS.

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” the famous German philosopher (哲学家) Friedrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is big part of our lives. But in recent years, some American schools have cut Music classes to control budgets (预算).
For example, public schools in Chicago hurt art education when they fired (解雇) over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 cent of the teachers taught Art or Music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the USA. In other countries, such as the UK, Music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like Science, Maths and History. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is beneficial (有益的) in many ways.
When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth K. Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development programme. For example, when playing the piano, people see musical notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.
C38. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.
B. Decoding musical notes is needed while we are playing music.
C. Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.
D. Playing the piano needs people to see musical notes.
B39. How many scientists who were good at playing music are mentioned in this passage?
A. One.
B. Two.
C. Three.
D. Four.
D40. What’s the writer’s opinion according to this passage?
A. Playing music is as simple as it looks.
B. Music isn’t a very important life skill for us.
C. Music classes should be cut in some schools.
D. Music is big part of our lives.

The news for Antonio was not good. The ship that sank in the sea between England and France was his. Its valuable cargo lay at the bottom of the sea, and Antonio had lost his money. His friends hoped that there would be no more bad news for him.
Shylock was still angry with his daughter, Jessica and the news for him was not good either. He paid people to look for her, but they could not find her. They came back with news about the money she had spent and the jewellery she had sold. All this made Shylock angrier and angrier.

“I can use it to go fishing,” he replied. “I can’t eat it, but it will make me feel good. He often laughs at me when I lose money. He even laughs at me when I don’t lose money. He lends money to people for no interest. So he takes away my friends and my business. Why does he do this? It is only because I am a Jew. But a Jew is just another person. Don’t I have eyes and hands like he does? Don’t I have feelings and passions like he does? Don’t I eat the same food? Don’t the same weapons hurt me as hurt him? Don’t I get sick with the same illnesses as he does? Am I not cured in the same way? Don’t I get hot in summer and cold in winter as he does? If you cut me, won’t I bleed? If you tickle me, won’t I laugh? If you poison me, won’t I die? If you do me wrong, won’t I take revenge?”
B41. Why did Shylock become angrier and angrier?
A. Because Antonio’s ship sank in the sea.

Dear David,
Thank you so much for your email. I’m so happy to share my story about playing the piano with you.
I began to learn to play the piano at the age of five. In the beginning, I found it really boring to practise it. What’s more, in order to play it well, I had to spend so much time practising the piano that I hardly had any time for other activities. This made me sad and tired. When my teacher found I was in blue.she encouraged me not to give up. She told me I had a gift for playing the piano and asked me to keep trying. With her help, I became more confident and devoted myself to practising. At last, I made great progress and won an award at the school art festival.
As the old saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” If we keep on working hard and believe in ourselves, we will achieve success.
I hope you will also realize your dream through hard work.
Best wish
Li Hua。
