一、阅读理解
From a treehouse camp in France to an organic farm in Portugal, The Green Traveller picks four resorts (景点) to stay during the coming summer vacation.
Il Paluffo, Italy
It’s a collection of luxurious small villas (别墅) within a restored 15th-century building, powered by renewable energy, amid the rolling Chianti Hills. From the natural pool you can be bathed in the sunshine while admiring views. The main villa has four elegant double rooms, while four apartments each sleep four to six people and come with their own private gardens.
Le Camp, France
It is a safari-tent camp, overlooking the green valley of the Aveyron in south-west France. Large handmade beds, soft solar lighting, and an outdoor woodland spa are arranged in a back-to-nature setting. The owners can help plan your journey by train and offer a free transfer (接送) to and from local railway stations.
Le Mas de Saribou, France
Swing in the hammock (吊床) by the splendid natural pool with views of mountain peaks at this four-room eco villa in south-eastern France. The kids will love exploring the gardens where you search for vegetables, fruit, and flowers for your dinner. Solar panels supply the electricity and a grass roof and thick walls keep you cool inside from the summer heat.
Muxima, Portugal
It’s an African-inspired retreat. The solar-powered seven guest rooms here are close to some spectacular sandy and surf-friendly beaches along the Vicentina coast. You can join an early morning yoga class by the natural pool and then take a seat to enjoy a vegetarian breakfast, made up of mostly organic, homegrown and local produce.

The other day, while taking a drop-in art class, I had an experience that I don’t always have when I’m engaged in something creative. I was fully in the zone. My instructor even commented: “You’re on fire today.” Painting after painting was flying out of me. I felt free—a very unfamiliar feeling for me.
Class started off with quick thirty-second figure drawing, then we worked our way up to one-minute, and then finally four-minute sketches (素描). Ever since the instructor told me not to go over the same line twice, I’ve really struggled with finding my freedom in figure drawing. But that day I was completely free, and as a consequence, my line quality was much better. I felt completely unconcerned with what the teacher thought of my work. It was one of the most enjoyable creative experiences I’ve had.
Afterwards, I was reflecting on why this was such a pleasurable experience. This is how I always want to feel while creating.
I think this was so enjoyable because it was a drop-in class. Not a full course. Not to get a master’s degree. Therefore, I felt no responsibility for getting it right. I was able to take it less seriously and just have fun with it. And I wasn’t monitoring myself to make sure that I was improving.
If you practice at your chosen craft, you will improve over time. Worrying about whether you’re getting better doesn’t help you improve. It actually slows down your growth. Your intellect might think it’s helping out, but it’s actually slowing you down and making your creative process less fun. Eventually, there’s truth to the simple saying—practice makes perfect. Since there’s no perfection in the world of creativity, practice makes better.
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Create even though it won’t be perfect.
Create because it won’t be perfect. Create even though it won’t be perfect. Create because it won’t be perfect. Create because your spirit needs to express itself. That is where the freedom is. That is where the joy is.
4.What does the underlined part in the first paragraph mean?
A.The author was very clever.B.The author got a little bored.
C.The author made a wise choice.D.The author devoted herself to her work. 5.What do we know about the author in the drop-in art class?
A.She did what she liked.B.She learnt the basic skills of sketching.

A.She focuses on gaining better drawing skills.
B.She has no sense of responsibility in her daily life.
C.She thinks joy mainly results in a person’s perfection.
D.She has found the reason for the pleasurable experience.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Practice makes perfect
B.Begin enjoying drop-in art classes
C.Try to find the key to successful work
D.Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good
Though diet and exercise are recommended as ways to improve health, new UC Riverside research in mice is the first to examine the long-lasting, combined effects of both factors when they are experienced early in life.
“Any time you go to a doctor with concerns about your weight, almost without fail, the doctor recommends that you exercise and eat less,” said researcher Marcell Cadney. “That’s why it’s surprising that most studies only look at diet or exercise separately. In this study, we wanted to include both,” he said.
The researchers found that early-life exercise led to reduced anxious behaviors and an increase in adult muscle and brain mass. When fed Western-style diets high in fat and sugar, the mice not only became fatter, but also grew into adults that preferred unhealthy food.
To obtain the findings, the researchers divided the young mice into four groups — those with access to exercise, those without access, those fed a standard, healthy diet and those who ate a Western diet. Mice started their diets immediately after weaning(断奶), and continued with them for three weeks until they reached adulthood. After an additional eight weeks of “washout”, during which all mice were housed without wheels and on a healthy diet, the researchers did a behavioral analysis and measured levels of several different hormones (激素).
One of those they measured, leptin, is produced by fat cells. It helps control body weight by increasing energy consumption and signaling that less food is required. Early-life exercise increased adult leptin levels in adult mice, regardless of the diet they ate. Previously, the research team found that eating too much fat and sugar as a child can change the microbiome (微生物群) for life, even if they later eat more healthily. Going forward, the team plans to study whether fat or sugar is more responsible for the negative effects they measured in Western-diet-fed mice.
This study offers great opportunities for health interventions in childhood habits. “Our findings may be related to understanding the potential effects of activity reductions and dietary changes associated with overweight,” said Marcell.
8.What is special about the new UCR research?
A.It finds the relation between health and diet.
B.It is the first to study the effect of exercise.
C.It takes both exercise and diet into account.
D.It gives equal importance to physical and mental health.
9.What may early-life exercise contribute to?
A.Stronger bones.B.A peaceful mind.
C.A desire for healthy food.D.The various microbiome for life. 10.What does the underlined word “leptin” in the last but one paragraph refer to?
A.A diet.B.A mouse.C.A behavior.D.A hormone. 11.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Early-life health habits matter.
B.It’s never too late to make a change.
C.A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
D.Dietary habits make a difference to children’s behavior
“If you don’t behave,I’ll call the police” is a lie that parents generally use to get their young children to behave. Parents’ lies work in the short terns, but a new study led by NTU Singapore suggests that they’re associated with harmful effects when the child becomes an adult.
The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents now,and how well they adjust to adulthood challenges. Adults who reported being lied to more as children were more likely to report deceiving their parents in their adulthood. They also said they faced greater difficulty in meeting psychological and social challenges.
Lead author Assistant Professor Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences said,“Parenting by lying can seem to save time especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something is complicated to explain. When parents tell children that ‘honesty is the best policy’, but display dishonesty by lying, such behaviour can send conflicting messages to their children. Parents’ dishonesty may eventually break trust and promote dishonesty in children. Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has bad consequences for children when they grow up. Parents should be aware of this and consider alternatives to lying, such as acknowledging children’s feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and problem-solving together, to help children develop good behaviour.”
The analysis found that parenting by lying could place children at a greater risk of developing problems that the society disapproves, such as aggression and rule-breaking behaviour. Some limitations of the study include relying on what young adults report about their past experience of parents’ lying. “Future research can explore using more information providers, such as parents, to report on the same topic,” suggested Asst Prof Setoh.
12.Why is a parental lie mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic for discussion.
B.To tell a popular way to educate children.
C.To prove the great influence of the police.
D.To show the harmful effects of parental lies.
13.The underlined word “deceiving” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.worrying B.abusing
C.disappointing D.cheating
14.According to the research, which of the following can parents do?
A.Give children chances to choose.B.Force good behaviour on children.
C.Let children solve problems alone.D.Stop children knowing what to expect. 15.What does the last paragraph imply about the study?
A.It is quite controversial.B.It is rather meaningless.
C.It needs to be perfected.D.It demands honest responses.
Apps (short for applications) are becoming increasingly popular nowadays, and for good reason. They can help you out in just about every area of your life, whether it's keeping fit, communicating with friends, or even learning a language. 16 Here's what you should think about before downloading an app for language learning.
·Learn from diverse sources(not just apps)
Any seasoned language learner will tell you that the beauty of mastering a foreign language is the world which it opens up to you. This is a world of diverse sources(来源) of information, from newspapers and books to TV, radio, music and even real people. Would you limit yourself to one medium in your native language? 17
·Establish your purpose and plan your habits
Do you want to be fluent in weeks or are you in it for the brain training? The good apps are designed to help you fit your studies around your timetable. 18 These apps encourage habit building, because the successful formation of a habit ensures your safe and regular return.
·Make it social
19 I mean social for real. I owe the speed of progress I made in Italian to the support from Jim, my partner in study time. Find a friend to accompany you. Take an evening class. Borrow a book. Buy a book. Book a week away and attend a language school. Just don't forget your phone!
If I may speak sincerely, the combination of app, language school, Jim, evenings out, and a choice book or two proved extremely effective. 20
A.I recommend it.
B.Remember that an app is just a tool.
C.No, I don't mean posting your progress online.
D.I encourage you to use apps as often as you can.
E.Probably not, so why do so in your new language?
F.The best apps adapt themselves based upon your behavior.
G.However, you need to know how to use them properly to really benefit.

Once I walked out of the train station, many crossed air lanes came into view. The robot, seeing how 24 I was, explained the new traffic system to me. The system was put into place by many famous engineers using highly 25 technology. In fact, it eliminated (消除) the issue of traffic jams entirely.
Next we made our way to a restaurant nearby. Just as I 26 that there was no menu, a waiter began to scan my body with a special 27 , which gave me a big fright, so I 28 out of my seat immediately. The robot explained it was just a machine that was able to figure out what our body needed and chose the recipe that 29 us most. The waiter then introduced me to the electronic screen that allowed me to choose the environment according to my 30 . I pressed the “beach” button on the screen and 31 I felt a sea breeze. I couldn’t help but 32 at how rapidly technology had advanced.

三、语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Xiao long bao (soup dumplings), those amazing constructions of delicate dumpling wrappers, encasing hot, 36 (taste) soup and sweet, fresh meat, are far and away my favorite Chinese street food. The dumplings arrive steaming and dangerously hot. To eat one, you have to decide whether 37 (bite) a small hole in it first, releasing the stream and risking a spill (溢出), 38 to put the whole dumpling in your mouth, letting the hot soup explode on your tongue. Shanghai may be the 39 (recognize) home of the soup dumplings but food historians will actually point you to the neighboring canal town of Nanxiang as Xiao long Bao’s birthplace. There you will find them prepared differently — more dumpling and less soup, and the wrappers are pressed 40 hand rather than rolled. Nanxiang aside, the best Xiao long bao have a fine skin, allowing them 41 (lift) out of the steamer basket without tearing or spilling any of 42 (they) contents. The meat should be fresh with 43 touch of sweetness and the soup hot, clear and delicious.
No matter where I buy them, one steamer is 44 (rare) enough, yet two seems
greedy, so I am always left 45 (want) more next time.

Price of a Miracle
Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully:47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it ! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
“I just know he’s really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”
