第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)A dragonfly barely an inch and a half long appears to be animal world’s most productive long distance traveler - flying thousands of miles over oceans as it migrates from continent to continent - according to a newly published research.
Biologists who led the study say the evidence is in the genes. They found that populations of this dragonfly, called Pantala flavescens, in Texas, eastern Canada, Japan, Korea, India, and South America, have genes so similar that there is only one likely explanation. Apparently — somehow — these insects are traveling distances that are extraordinarily
long for their small size, breeding (繁殖) with each other, and creating a common worldwide gene pool.
But how do insects from different continents manage to meet and hook up? Ware says it appears to be the way their bodies have evolved. “These dragonflies have adaptations such as increased surface areas on their wings that enable them to use the wind to carry them.”
Dragonflies, in fact, have already been observed crossing the Indian Ocean from Asia to Africa. “They are following the we ather,” says Daniel Troast, who analyzed the DNA samples in Ware’s lab. “They’re going from India where it’s dry season to Africa where it’s wet season, and apparently they do it once a year.”
Wetness is a must for Pantala to reproduce, and that, says Ware, is why these insects would be driven to even attempt such a dangerous trip, which she calls a “kind of suicide.” The species depends on it. While many will die on the route, as long as enough make it, the species survives.
For the moment, the details of this extraordinary insect travel are an educated best guess. Much more work is needed to bring many loose ends together. Ware and Troast hope that scientists can work on plotting those routes.

23.(8分)In the winters of 2012 and 2013, National Geographic grantee (被批准人) Anders Angerbjorn and his Ph. D.student, Rasmus Erlandsson, studied an extremely threatened species, the Scandinavian arctic fox. The current population numbers are fewer than 150 individuals in mainland Europe so many of the young foxes are having difficulty finding a non-related partner. Other threats to the species include competition from the red fox for the rare small rodents (啮齿目动物) they both depend upon for food. Angerbjorn and Erlandsson monitored the arctic fox population in Vasterbotten and Norrbotten, Sweden, to identify the best areas for further conservation actions. This included tagging (贴标签于) the baby foxes, which proved to be a challenge.
“When catching arctic foxes it is easy to believe that the smaller ones are the easiest to handle. In some aspects it is true. Their teeth are smaller and the jaws less powerful. However, just as human children have a hard time keeping still, the really small cubs (幼兽) do too.”
“We handle the foxes in a bag wh ile tagging, and the trick is to keep the animal still between your legs while kneeling. And here comes the tricky part. How do you keep a small, wild fox still? You cannot apply too much force. You really do not want to hurt it. Just as with small children the best tool is patience, but at the same time you want the handling to be as short as possible.”
“One particular cub had a technique I had never experienced before as it continuously tried to turn onto its back, for no obvious reason. I had to reach the ears, so I quickly turned the cub upright. The cub stayed still for a few seconds, and then began to roll onto its back again. The same thing happened over and over again! Finally, I got the tags in place, and after making measurements and taking some sa mples, I finally let it go.”
1、According to the text, the red fox ________.
A.looks like the arctic fox B.is an endangered species
C.needs more conservation actions D.competes with the arctic fox for food
2、What does the underlined word “This” in Par agraph 1 refer to?
A.Providing food for the arctic fox.
B.Checking the number of the arctic fox.
C.Building conservation areas for the arctic fox.
D.Helping the arctic fox find a non-related partner.
3、Human children are mentioned in Paragraph 2 to explain that ________.
A.kids love the arctic fox B.baby foxes can be dangerous
C.it is difficult to tag baby foxes D.the smaller foxes are easier to handle
4、To tag small cubs, Angerbjorn and Erlandsson had to be ________.
A.brave B.patient C.creative D.strong
24.(8分)It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting. Y et, on the other hand, competition leads to a pragmatic(实用的)attitude. People choose to learn things that are use ful, and do things that are profitable. Today’s college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism(功利主义).
Many college students choose Business, Law or Computer Programming as their majors convinced that these professions are where big money is. It is not unusual to see college students taking a part-time job as a warm-up for the real battle. I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving tests to get a license. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more severe, students do have reasons to be practical.
However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if utilitarianism becomes the main trend on campus, leaving no space for the cultivation(培养)of students’ minds, or development of their soul, we will see university is training well-trained spiritless working machines. If utilitarianism controls society, we will see people lost in the money-making adventures, humanity losing its grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous. I’d like to think society as encouraging and people regard profit or fame only as a horse that pulls the courage. Yet without the driver picking direction, the courage would go straight and may even end up in a dangerous situation.
A certificate may give you some advantages, but not broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrity(诚实正直), which are the wealth you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way. In today’s world, the highest level of competition may not be that of skills or expertise(专门技能), but of vision and strategy, and your intellectual quality largely determines how far you can go in your career.
1、The author’s attitude toward today’s college education is .
A.positive B.cautious
C.critical D.doubtful
2、Many college students choose to major in Business because .
A.a businessman is very likely to make big money
B.studying business is less competitive
C.too many students have chosen Computer Programming
D.Computer Programming is not a must for them
3、The author does strongly suggest that .
A.more competition be encouraged on campus
B.people should not ignore the value of broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrity
C.intellectual quality determine how far one can go in his/her career
D.college students get as many part-time jobs as possible
4、In the author’s opinion, .
A.college students are not pragmatic enough
B.college students should have drivers pick direction for them
C.college education should provide students with more business courses
D.college education should value the cultivation of students’ minds
25.(10分)Sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain that is important for memory, according to a recent study by UCLA researchers of middle-aged and older adults.
Studies show that too much sitting, like smoking, increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and premature death. Researchers at UCLA want to see how sedentary behavior (sitting for long periods of time) influences the health of the brain, especially regions of the brain that are important to memory formation.
UCLA researchers gathered 35 people aged 45 to 75 and asked about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they spent sitting over the previous work. Each person had a high-resolution MRI (热分辨磁共振成像)scan, which provides a detailed look at the medial temporal lobe, or MTL, a bruin region involved in the formation of new memories.
The researchers found that sedentary behavior is an important predictor of thinning of the MTL and that physical activity, even at high levels, is mil enough to compensate the harmful effects of silting for long periods.
“This study does n ot prove that too much sitting causes thinner brain structures, but instead that more hours spent sitting are associated with thinner regions,” researchers said. In addition, the researchers focused on the hours spent
sitting, but did not ask participants if they took breaks during this time.
The researchers next hope to follow a group of people for a longer duration to determine if sitting cause the tinning and what role gender (性別), race, and weight might play in bruin health related to silting.
“MTL thin ning can be an indication of cognitive (认知的) decline in middle-aged and older adults. Reducing sedentary behavior may be a possible target for measures designed to improve bruin health in people at risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” researchers said.
1、What is the study done by UCLA mainly intended to find out?
A.What harm sitting too much causes.
B.Why silting too much is like smoking.
C.How too much sitting affects brain health.
D.Whether too much sitting causes early death
2、Participants were scanned by a high-resolution MRI to .
A.evaluate their memory loss
B.examine their MTL conditions
C.record their physical activity levels
D.record the length of lime for their sitting
3、What do UCLA researchers think of their study?
A.It in a great success.
B.It is little practical value.
C.It must target the young.
D.It still needs to be improved.
4、What can be the best title for the text?
A.Long Sitting Is Bad for Your Brain
B.How to Improve Brain Health
C.Sitting Causes Many Health Problem
D.An Easy Way to Prevent Memory Loss
