Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be manˈs new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they canˈt get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives:the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the ratˈs brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the ratˈs brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University,New York, says,“Robotsˈ noses donˈt work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they donˈt need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into sp aces we couldnˈt get to,and a rat would get out if it wasnˈt safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, musical instruments and model cars. People and businesses are able to create the things they need very quickly and easily using 3D printers.
But can you imagine printing food? Some scientists are trying to create a new dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as common as the microwave or the fridge. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to choose what you want to eat and put the uncooked food ‘inksˈ into the printer. You can also change the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and healthy meals.
Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing and transporting as food production would be much simpler. Printing food could also help people who are experiencing the swallowing disorder. They could make the printer to print softer foods so that they would not have trouble swallowing them.
However, some people think that a future of 3D--printed food would cause many problems. It could take away many jobs, including those for growing and transporting food. Likewise, traditional cafés and restaurants might lose business. Also, people are worrying about whether the printed food is nutritious: Is it really possible to get the nutrients we need from food-based inks? Whatˈs more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.

It could be said that the northernmost part of our planet holds the secrets of our past as well as our future.
The icy land is,in fact, not a place for the weak. This vast land of wilderness is where people can get up close to natureˈs extremes. The place is “no joke”, US photographer Mark Mahaney told PLAIN Magazine. “When midnight sun is replaced by polar night,ev erythingˈs different Eyes to the horizon and itˈs nothing. And then more nothing, in every direction. ”
One of the most harsh, yet most pristine(原始的)places on Earth, the Arctic has been affected by human activities-exploration,booming tourism and most importantly, global warming-in recent decades.
But the impact of these changes is not restricted to the inhabitants of this area alone. In fact, it could be said that the weight of the world relies on this icy region.
The Earthˈs steady climate depends on the Arcticˈs sea ice, which acts as a huge white reflector at the top of the planet, bouncing some of the sunˈs rays back into space. The more Arctic sea ice melts, the less light is reflected, and the more the dark oceans will absorb the sunˈs radiation. The Arc tic also helps circulate ocean currents, moving cold and warm water around the globe.
With visible changes in the global climate, the Arctic has given us a wake-up call-what happens up in the North doesnˈt just stay there. It comes with a high cost to the world at large. Itˈs time for us to pay attention to this chilly region and learn more about whatˈs happening there, as well as its past and possible future.
32、What does the underlined sentence "The place is 'no jokeˈ” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. The weak are unhappy in the Arctic.
B. The natural conditions are poor in the Arctic.
C. Photographers are not allowed to take photos.
D. People are forbidden to make jokes in the Arctic.
33、What has caused the changes in the Arctic?
A. Animals and plants.
B. Global warming
C. The activities of human beings.
D. The scientistsˈ records.
34、What is the function of the Arcticˈs sea ice?
A. To regulate climate.
B. To keep water clean.
C. To attract the sunˈs rays.
D. To support the living creatures.
35、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Most Harsh Land

Should we click for friends?
Nowadays, the arrival of the digital age brings people increasing ease in accessibility, enabling us to make friends online more easily. However, whether we should click for friends is gradually coming into focus.
On one hand, the Internet provides us with a platform where we can easily get acquainted with people who share our interests.Besides, social media tools make us aware of what our friends are up to and maintain friendship. On the other hand, making friends online might expose us to the risk of being cheated and privacy being leaked.
We cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater.Just be careful when acquiring friends, both invirtuality and reality.。
