WutheringHeight
Book Report of Wuthering Height
Maybe many people have read a famous novel called Wuthering Heights. But do you know the author of this novel? She is Emily Bronte.
Emily Bronte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England. Her father, the Rev. Patrick Bronte, had moved from Ireland to Weatherfield, in Essex, where he taught in Sunday school. Eventually he settled in Yorkshire, the centre of his life's work. In 1812 he married Maria Branwell of Penzance. Patrick Bronte loved poetry, he published several books of prose and poetry and wrote to local newspapers. In 1820 he moved to Hawort, a little town at the edge of a large tract of moorland.
And later, the couple had three daughters, they are Anne, Emily and Charlotte. After their mother died in 1821, the children spent most of their time in reading and composition. At this time, they showed a talent in literature. Between the years 1824 and 1825 Emily attended the school at Cowan Bridge with Charlotte, and then was largely educated at home. Her father's bookshelf offered a variety of reading: the Bible, Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, Scott and many others. The children also read enthusiastically articles on current affairs and intellectual disputes in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Fraser's Magazine, and Edinburgh Review.
In 1835 Emily Bronte was at Roe Head. There she had a homesickness and returned after a few months to the moorland scenery of home. In 1837 she became a governess at Law Hill, near Halifax, where she spent six months. Emily had no close friends. She wrote a few letters and was interested in mysticism.
This is because her first novel Wuthering Heights consisted of many mysterious details. Her first novel published in 1847. And at the same time, her sister Charlotte also published her novel Jane Eyre. In a word, the three sisters all play important roles in literature.
You know, of cause, Wuthering Heights was Emily’s only novel in her life. So she showed some special writing techniques in the novel.A very complex element of her writing technique is the narrative style. Every character in the novel has his/ her own style and personality. Wuthering Heights tells us a complicated revenge and a fantastic love story of two generation between the two characters Catherine and Heathcliff, Cathy and Hareton. In the late 1800s, there are two families called Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. One day, the master of Wuthering Heights Mr. Earnshaw backed home and took an orphan, he was called Heathcliff. The daughter of Mr. Earnshaw Miss Catherine liked this boy and they always played together. But the son of Mr. Earnshaw Hindley hated the boy. When his father left home, he always bullies Heathcliff. So Heathcliff became a rude, crazy boy. Catherine grew up gradually, she loves Heathcliff, but because of her vanity, she didn’t tell Heathcliff. And later, she married with the master of Thrushcross Grange Mr. Edgar. Heathcliff was sad and left Wuthering Heights. Several years later, Heathcliff became rich. He decided to revenge the person who owned his love and happiness. At first, he deceived Hindley and gained Wuthering Heights, then he deceived Edgar’ sister Isabella. He married with her and tried to gain Thrushcross Grange from her. At last, Catherine, Hindley, Isabella and Edgar all died from him.
Heathcliff became the master of the two families. Then he
continued to revenge their children. But many years
later, he was tired of living in the world. Because of him, his son Linton died. And Catherine’s daughter was sad. But at the end of the story, Heathcliff died in a cold night. Catherine’s daughter and Hindley’s son Hareton fell in love with each other. And they lived in a happy life forever.
So what do you think of the novel after you read?
In my view, mayb e it’s not the best love story, but it’s really different from other love story. The author uses cold, cruel, violent and dark environment to describe the psychology of main characters. It explores the philosophy of humanity. The characters in the novel are full of boldness, wildness and passion which is the human nature and instinct that free from the restrict of social civilization. In this novel, passion is the key to bring the readers into the story, it does not matter of good and evil, beauty and ugline ss, it’s a real existence for us to experience and think.
During the whole novel, the female leading role --Catherine rarely use "love" to describe the relationship between her and the male leading role--Heathcliff. But In that night she decided personal ly the tragic fate of her and Heathcliff, she said ‘my great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff’s miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he was annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it……I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I is always a pleasure to me, but as my own being.’ This is the real soul of Catherine, she love Heathcliff, but she can’t marry with him because of her selfish and the pretentious feature. This is the
paradox of love which leads to the tragic end for Catherine and Heathcliff.
Later, Heathcliff left her, left Wuthering Heights. But he came back after several years, and revenged Catherine and all the people who had jeered and abused him before. When Catherine was going to die, he was extremely cruel and did not give her tenderness and consolation, he said to her,"you teach me how cruel you’ve been-cruel and false. Why did you despise me? Why did you betray your own heart, Catherine? I have not one word of comfort. You deserve this. You hav e killed yourself…….You love me, then what right bad you to leave me? Because misery, and degradation, and death, and nothing that God could inflict
would have parted us, you, of your own will, did it, you have broken mine. So much the worse for me, that I am strong. Do I want to live? What kind of living will it be when you—oh, God! Would you like to live with your soul in the grave?”
Yes, Heathcliff hated Catherine so much, because he loved her so much. He must revenge so that he could be survival from the sadness and the broken heart. The end of the novel was that Heathcliff committed suicide, his death is a die for their love, and express his love for Catherine. Before he died, he gave up the revenge of the next generation. This reflects that he has a good nature, but because of the cruel reality he loses his nature. The recovery of humanity is a spiritual quality and reflects the humanitarian ideals.
Wuthering Heights is a stunning novel, frightening, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe. Even if you do not like it, you should read it at least once, and I believe you will like it and will return to it again and again.。
