介绍一位你敬佩已故的名人英语作文My Hero: Neil Armstrong
Do you know who the first person to walk on the moon was? It was an American astronaut named Neil Armstrong! He was born in 1930 in a small town in Ohio. Even as a little kid, Neil loved studying airplanes and rockets. He dreamed of one day traveling into outer space!
When Neil grew up, he became a test pilot in the United States Air Force. His job was to fly brand new, experimental airplanes to make sure they were safe. He was an excellent pilot who stayed calm in dangerous situations. The airplanes he flew would sometimes spin out of control, but Neil always managed to regain control and land safely.
In 1962, Neil applied to become an astronaut for NASA, which is the U.S. government's space agency. NASA was preparing to send people to the moon as part of their Apollo program. Out of thousands of applicants, Neil was one of only thirty-two people selected to train as an astronaut! He had to learn all about how to fly a spacecraft and work in the vacuum of space.
Neil's first trip to space was in 1966 aboard the Gemini 8 spacecraft. During that mission, he became the first civilian to dock one spacecraft with another while in orbit. This was an important skill to master before trying to land on the moon. Unfortunately, the mission had to be cut short because of technical problems, but Neil remained calm and brought the spacecraft home safely.
Then in 1969, Neil was chosen to be the commander of the historic Apollo 11 mission - the first mission to attempt to land astronauts on the moon! On July 16th, 1969, a giant Saturn V rocket blasted off carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. For the first few days, the three astronauts just orbited the Earth as Mission Control made sure all systems were working perfectly.
On July 19th, the lunar module carrying Neil and Buzz separated from the main spacecraft to begin the descent to the lunar surface, while Michael orbited above in the main craft. There were times when NASA lost contact with the lander and didn't know if it was ok. But Neil remained calm, just like he had during all his other flights.
At 4:18pm Eastern Time on July 20th, 1969, the lander's engines slowed it down enough for a gentle landing on the
moon in an area called the Sea of Tranquility. Neil Armstrong looked out the window and could see the stark, grey lunar landscape stretching out for miles. There were no noises, no breezes, no movement at all. Just an eerie, alien silence.
About six and a half hours later, Neil opened the lander's hatch and began climbing down the small ladder. At 10:56pm Eastern Time, he became the first human in history to step foot on the surface of the moon! His first words when he stepped onto the dusty surface were, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Buzz soon joined him, and for two and a half hours the two men studied the lunar surface, collected rock samples, planted the American flag, and took famous photographs while the whole world watched in awe on television.
When their time on the surface was up, the ascent stage of the lander blasted off to rejoin Michael Collins in the main spacecraft orbiting above. Two days later, all three men splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean. The historic Apollo 11 mission was a complete success!
Neil Armstrong was suddenly the most famous man on the planet. He became an American hero who showed the entire world what courage and perseverance can achieve. In an
interview, Neil said the thing he was most proud of was "being able to be part of a team effort that was truly brilliant."
After retiring from NASA in 1971, Neil led a very private life as a professor in Cincinnati. He shied away from the spotlight, believing the moon landing "was the culmination of the work of 300,000 to 400,000 people over a decade." Despite his modesty and humble nature, he remains an inspiration to kids who dream of exploring the unknown someday.
Neil Armstrong passed away in 2012 at the age of 82, but his incredible achievements and bravery will never be forgotten. He showed that if you work hard, stay determined, and remain calm under pressure, you can achieve amazing things. Every time I look up at the night sky, I think of Neil Armstrong and feel grateful for his "one giant leap for mankind."。
