A nosebleed can be frightening to get or see,but try to stay calm. Most nosebleeds look
much worse
than they really are. Almost all nosebleeds can be treated at home.
If you get a nosebleed, sit down and lean slightly forward. Keeping your head above your heart will
make your nose bleed less. Lean forwards so that the blood will flow out of your nose instead of down
the back of your throat. If you lean back, you may swallow the blood. This can make you
uncomfortable.
Use your thumb and index fingers to press together the soft part of your nose. Keep holding your nose
until the bleeding stops. Don't let go for at least 5 minutes. If it's still bleeding after that, hold it again
for 10 minutes straight. You can also place an ice pack across the toe of your nose.
Once the bleeding
stops, don't do anything that may make it start again, such as bending over or blowing your nose.
The most common causes of nosebleeds are dryness (often caused by indoor heat in the winter) and
nose picking. These two things work together — nose picking occurs more often when the liquid in the
nose is dry. Other, less common causes include injuries, colds or cocaine use. Children may stick small
objects up their nose. Old people may have infections or high blood pressure. The cause of nosebleeds
is often unknown.
Most nosebleeds aren't serious. They occur in the front part of the nose and stop in a few minutes.
A few nosebleeds start in large vessels (血管) in the back of the nose, which can be
dangerous. They
may occur after an injury. This type of nosebleed is more common in the elderly and is often due to
high blood pressure, daily aspirin use or bleeding disorders.
67.According to the text,nosebleeds .
A. are not frightening to get or see
B. are usually not serious and can be cured with the right method at home
C. must be treated by doctors in the hospital
D. aren't dangerous at all
68.Which of the following is NOT the right way to treat nosebleeds?
A. Cool your nose with ice or other cold things.
B. Press your nose slightly with your fingers.
C. Lean backwards to slow down the flow of flood.
D. Lean your head forwards, just above your chest.
69.What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Nosebleeds are caused by some diseases.
B. Nosebleeds are caused by the dry
weather.
C. Your nose may be infected.
D. The causes of nosebleed.
70.When does nose picking often cause nosebleeds?
A. When your nose feels dry.
B. When you have a cold.
C. When you have a headache.
D. When the liquid in your nose is wet.
71.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It may be more dangerous if the back part of your nose bleeds.
B. Nosebleeds can cause the disease related to blood pressure in older people.
C. Nosebleeds occur to kids because of infections.

Chua stirs debate
A NEW book about Chinese style tough parenting (严厉管教) has caused debate in the
US.
Amy Chua, the author of the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, is a Chinese American professor at Yale Law School. She is also a mother of two.
Chua describes the child-rearing (养育) methods she used with her daughters. She said that they “would seem unimaginable to Westerners”.
Chua sets strict standards for her daughters. For example, in school they weren't allowed to make grades lower than As. They had to play piano or violin and practice hours a day. There were no sleepovers (在别人家过夜),play dates or TV.
There has been wide criticism (批评) of Chua's book in the US. “It's kind of extreme,” Jeffrey Seinfeld,a professor at New York University, told the Los Angles Times.“... standards (of parenting) need to be realistic and tailored to each child. Children need parents who can guide them, not force them to do things they're probably not interested
in.”
Now the criticism seems to have spread to China. Sun Yunxiao,an expert from the China Youth and Children Research Center spoke to The Beijing News about his concerns. He argued that Chua's method of parenting would limit children from reaching their full potential.
“Some Chinese parents do focus on test scores and good degree,” Sun said.“But what gets sacrificed along the way is their kids' capacity (能力) fully to develop and to enjoy life.”
While critics might sympathize with kids who experience this parenting style, some young people quite appreciate it.“I think anyone can do well if they work hard enough,” said 17-year-old Li Ao,a Senior 3 student at Qingdao No 2 High School. “A ‘tiger mother’ is there to help her kids work hard.”
Others think that Chua has a point when it comes to setting challenging goals for kids. “It's crucial for children,” according to Abigail Gewirtz,a professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota. She told CNN:“Honestly, kids need to be pushed sometimes. If you push a kid to do well, and they're good at it,they benefit. It's good to have high expectations.”
72.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. Most children don't need strict standards to do well.
B. Chua's educating method is widely accepted in China.
C. Supporters of Amy Chua believe in high expectations.
D. Most children welcome challenging goals.
73.The underlined word “sympathize with” could be replaced by.
A. support
B. respect
C. relate to
D. feel sorry for
74.Which of the following statements might Jeffrey Seinfeld agree with?
A. Children need to be pushed to succeed.
B. The “tiger mother” is no longer popular in American society.
C. Parents should take their children into account when they give them guidance.
D. Extreme parenting produces children who do not know themselves when grown up.
