CNN Money named the clinical research associate (CRA)position as one of the “10 Best Jobs in America” for 2012 and 2013, and thedemand for CRAs is expected to grow over the next decade. Although the positioncan be very rewarding and exciting, the expectations placed on CRAs by variousstakeholders (e.g., sponsors/contract research organization [CRO]management/investigative sites) may contribute to the perceived high level of attritionacross the industry.

Professional burnout is a frequently cited reason for CRAturnover. Major predictors of burnout may include the high number of workinghours, work/home con•icts, and acceptance of additional tasks outside thenormal job duties.2 A cursory search of the Internet yields a plethora ofcommentary and inquiry from CRAs across the world interested in learning tipsof the trade from their peers with regard to maximizing professional e?ciency and career advancement while avoiding burnout.

Identifying Professional and Personal Stakeholders

It can be difficult to recognize when burnout is looming andwhen the work/life relationship is imbalanced. CRAs should periodically gauge whether(re)alignment may be necessary by taking time to identifythe stakeholders and obligations they have in both their professional andpersonal pursuits, in order to devise a workable (and sustainable) strategy forstriking balance between competing demands on their time. Professional obligationscan range from project-specific needs, such as preparing for data locks andkeeping up with visit reports and follow-up letters, to more generaljob-related responsibilities like training, expense account reconciliation,continuing education, and career goal-planning.

Typical pitfalls that lead to burnout include theever-growing list of responsibilities and lack of hours in the day to completeall tasks. Some CRAs accept unrealistic site loads and travel schedules inorder to gain experience in the industry. Others may be uncomfortable or inexperiencedwith saying “no” when asked to take on additional tasks. However, as Oxman andSackett point out, “"e issue is that by saying ‘yes’ too often, you
runthe risk of overcommitment, overwork, underachievement across the board,undersocialization, underenjoyment, failure to deliver on your commitments, andburnout.”

An overwhelming list of job duties and expectations maycause a CRA to allot very little, if any, time for personal obligations andinterests. Because work/life imbalance is a major contributor to burnout, it isimportant mentally and physically for CRAs to devote sufficienttime to interests outside work.

Based on more than 10 years of experience as traveling CRAswith competing business and personal interests, we havedevised a strategic approach for striking work/life balance. The process beginswith identifying personal stakeholders and obligations (see Figure 1).

Setting Priorities

Once all stakeholders and significant obligations have beenidentified, CRAs should prioritize their obligations according to present needsand demands. "They should re-evaluate the prioritized list at periodicintervals, and shift priorities up or down as needs warrant. Here is a sampleCRA priorities list:

We have compiled a list of effective tips to help balanceprofessional and personal interests. Although this list is far fromcomprehensive, individual CRAs can adapt the general idea to suit themselves."These tips should be used as launching points for creating personalplans.

Loop visits together, when possible, to save time and money.

Create a weekly or monthly schedule to keep track ofimportant appointments, school activities, birthdays, etc. Keep

Develop a menu plan. Many CRAs find that menu planningallows them to ensure their families eat healthy while they are traveling.

Check out for a never- endingsupply of yoga, Pilates, and aerobic exercise videos.
