第1题.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One evening, a workman was exhaustedly making his way home after work, when he stopped to rest by the side of the road. A woman came by, pushing a cart full of flowers. The smell of her blossoms so filled the air with sweetness that it seemed to take away the tiredness in his bones and lift his spirits. He had never experienced such wonder from the many blooms of his own garden. "How much must I pay, or what must I do, to have some of your wonderful flowers?" he asked the woman.
"Oh, sir," she said, "take what you wish for."
"What return must I make for them?" he asked again.
"Your gratitude is enough," she said, "and it's a pleasure to share the beauty of flowers with you."
So the man filled his arms with blossoms and hurried joyfully home. His wife and his children were also glad over the remarkable flowers, for they, too, discovered that the sight of them was a delight and the smell of them refreshed the soul.
In order not to lose his valuable possession, the man planted the blossoms in a small plot of land behind his house. Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautiful—they still performed their fantastic magic.
Every day, his children took delight in playing in the yard and always sang and danced around the flowers. They all liked the lovely gift their father had received and even invited many of their friends to share this fantastic magic together. When children came to play near the flowers, the man over and over warned them against carelessness and wild play for fear that they walked on the flowers and damaged them. But the flowers remained strong as long as there was enough sun and water to nourish(滋养)them. Nowhere else could the man or his wife or children find such remarkable relaxation from tiredness, such comfort in sadness, such spiritual nourishment as those remarkable flowers provided.
With the news spreading and more people coming to appreciate his treasure, the man became even more concerned about his remarkable flowers.

He was determined to protect the flowers. ________
However, the flowers seemed to fade day by day, so the man went everywhere for help. ________
【答案】
He was determined to protect the flowers. So he built a high wall around them. Not feeling satisfied, he even set up rules as to who could enter the garden, how they must enter, and what they must follow while they were there. As a result, children were forbidden to enter and appreciate the flowers as before. For his part, he continued to see to it that his treasure received enough sunlight and water so that the flowers continued to perform their wonderful magic.
However, the flowers seemed to fade day by day, so the man went everywhere for help. He visited every expert, only to find his efforts in vain. He
felt on pins and needles, seeing his beloved flowers dying. One evening, he was wandering on the street aimlessly when he suddenly noticed the flower woman on the same spot where he had met her, giving away her amazing flowers. It finally dawned on him that the flowers are gifts not possessions and that only by sharing can the magic remain and last.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, neither did he try to clean up much. His socks never made it into the hamper(洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the
crumbs(碎屑)into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. He was reading a comic book and he was still reading, saying nothing. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
"You know what, Arthur? I'm not going to ask you again. I'm done cleaning today. " And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. "Mom, where are my socks? " Arthur called.
"There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them, " Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. "Ouch! " cried Arthur. "That really hurt! "

During this past year, I've had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn't bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw(锯子)from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a 20 bill in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

It was an evening just like any other in the Miller family apartment. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were tired from working all day and the children were busy playing on tablets(平板电脑).
"Mum, can you play a game with me now?" said Amy. "Dad, do you want to play battleships?" asked Ben.
Suddenly, the lights went off. The apartment went completely dark. "Oh no! We have lost all our electricity," cried Mr. Miller. "There must be a power cut in the city," said Mrs. Miller.
"Is everybody okay?" asked Mr. Miller. "Yes, I'm okay," said Amy. "Wow! It's so dark in here," said Ben. "I've never seen our house like this before."
Mr. Miller picked up his torch(手电筒)and turned it on. But there was only a small beam of light.
"Oh no!" complained Mr. Miller. "The batteries in this torch are not very good. I don't know how long this torchlight will last." The Miller family looked out of their apartment window. Mrs. Miller pointed at the sky. "Look at all the stars." "Wow! I can see so many," said Ben.
Then Mrs. Miller wiped her forehead. "I'm feeling very hot," she said. "So am I," said Amy. "Who turned the heater on?" Mr. Miller frowned. "The heater is not on. The machine that keeps us cool has stopped working," Mrs Miller answered. "Oh no! The fridge is not working either and all the food will be ruined," she cried. "And what about the freezer?" asked Ben. "The ice cream cake for Grandma is in there. It's a special treat for her."
"That's a big problem," said Amy. "The ice cream cake will melt if it gets warm."
Just then, the torch went out. "And now we have an even bigger problem," said Mr. Miller. "Oh dear! What do we do now?" Mrs. Miller asked. Amy saw her tablet glowing(发出暗淡的光)in the corner of the room. "I have an idea," she said.

Overcoming Adversity
On the bus headed to the United States from Mexico, I experienced the saddest and longest ride I ever had. The thoughts of me not seeing my friends and family again were taking over my mind and causing a strong sense of depression. As I heade d to a place I didn’t want to call home, minutes felt like hours and the hours felt like days.
Welcome to the United States, the driver said at the immigration checkpoint. The Officers repeatedly asked me for my passport, but I didn’t understand a single word coming out of their mouth. After we sorted out all the confusion we were on our way. With 3 hours left, a new thought took over my mind: stupidity. Not being able to understand a new language was the
cause of my feeling. This filled me with a burning rage that I had never felt before.
Not understanding the new language I was introduced to was always a problem that I struggled with alone. In school, I felt like the problems were growing rapidly and I was losing control. The transition from being a straight-A student in Mexico to being a straight F student in the United States wasn’t easy and left me wondering if I could ever belong here. I was always known as the weird(怪的)Mexican in the classroom. Making friends was always hard because no one wanted to hang out with the weirdo(怪人)in the class.
I told myself that if I wanted to overcome my problem I had to practice it more. When it came to group assignments, I thought that it was the perfect moment to carry out my plan to hold a conversation with someone else. The moment arrived, I was nervous that it was my time to speak in the group. With a stutter(结巴), my first words came out of my mouth. Hey my name is Jesus, I said with a strong Mexican accent. Everyone in the group burst out laughing and the cause of their joy was my strong Mexican accent. This made me want to crawl up into a little ball and start crying in front of everyone.

【答案】After a year of hard work and long practices came my first success in reading. We are going to do popcorn reading, Mr. Cerda said, with a loud voice.I sat there anxiously, part of me hoped he wouldn’t call me, but part of me wanted to get the reading over with. Suddenly, I found myself reading the famous words of Dr. Seuss, You’re off to great places. Today is your day! Your Mountain is waiting, so… get on your way! When I finished reading, all I heard was silence. My classmates were in shock, and I realized my words were as clear as they can be.
A simple Hey how are you could be the icebreaker between people. I was a shy kid and I grew up thinking that I was going to be friendless forever. However, I eventually discovered that making friends and meeting new people was actually pretty easy. Whatever the case may be, my grades and ability to speak improved. I participated in tutorials, science fairs, and even competition for academics. All of this became possible when I found confidence in myself because of the inspirational words from Dr. Seuss.

第8题.
阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语进行续写,使之构成一个完整的短文。
续写的词数应为150词左右。
It had been one of those days when nothing goes right. I was due at work at 8 o'clock, but I was ten minutes late because I overslept. I went straight to my regular post—the toy department. It was two days before Christmas and the department was a mess. It caused me to think back to the time when I enjoyed Christmas. That was two years ago, before I went work here.
Somehow since that time, Christmas didn't mean much anymore, except more work and headaches. The whole day, I was cursed, yelled at and stepped on. And I still had to finish my Christmas shopping that evening. I had just finished explaining to a man why we didn't sell firecrackers, when I felt a tug on my arm.
It was one of the two kids I had been keeping an eye on for a while—security told us to watch kids for stealing. He and his little sister had been looking at the "discount" counter, where we had all the cheapest toys. Before I even bent down to listen to him, I checked around for his sister. I didn't see her.
"Mister, do you think this would be a good present for my little sister?" he said in a broken accent, holding up a bottle of soap bubble liquid. "I don't want her to know about it," he whispered before I could even answer.
I just agreed with him. He stuck his hand in the pocket of his dirty jeans and pulled out a fistful of change, asking if he had enough money to pay for it. "It looks like you'll have to try to find something else," I said. "You need ten more cents." I doubted it was a trick, especially at Christmas. He looked sad and went back to find something else.
I watched him from the corner of my eye for a while as he looked at other items, but always came back to the soap bubbles. I left the area for a few minutes and when I came back, he was still there, trying to find a cheaper gift.
Somehow, the kid struck me as different from most the troublemakers we got in the toy department.
Paragraph 1:
I went over to him and asked if he had found anything yet.
Paragraph 2:
I followed him secretly to see what he really spent the money on.
【答案】
I went over to him and asked if he had found anything yet. He just shook his head and looked very disappointed. "Well, let's see how much money you have again," I said. He dumped the change in with the two dimes I had concealed in my hand. "Well, look it here!" I said, "I must have counted wrong before—you have just enough for those soap bubbles." His smile spread out to his ears again, and he headed for the checkouts.
I followed him secretly to what he really spent the money on. He went through the line with the one item and a smile, then met his sister outside. He kept the bag tightly clenched in his fist so his sister couldn't see what he had bought for her with his last pennies. Somehow the rest of the day went much better, and when I went to buy Christmas presents that night, I looked for gifts instead of obligations. For the first time in three years, I had Christmas spirit again, but I got some really odd looks from my family when I came home with soap bubbles.
【解答】【高分句式与表达】

Catherine Svilicic never would have guessed her adopted rescue dog Khan would act out with aggression(攻击性)towards her young 17-month-old baby, Charlotte!
The day began with the usual playtime outside. Although baby Charlotte had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Charlotte and the new dog had been making a habit of playing like this. However, things were different that day. Catherine watched as Khan threw her baby across their backyard! Why was Khan acting as though a lovely child was a threat? Catherine watched him drag her child, hoping he would stop. Sadly, it seemed Catherine needed to immediately intervene because this was only the beginning. He tightly clenched his jaws(咬紧牙关)into her diaper(纸尿裤)to throw her back and forth. This is when things got out of hand. Certainly, Catherine was angry with Khan for throwing her girl. However, something deep down told Catherine there was more to this than what they were seeing. Little did she know, these doubts would turn out to be true.
But her baby was still in great danger. Catherine noted that her baby seemed a target. That moment we mentioned when the dog sunk his teeth into Charlotte's diaper and used his strength to throw her baby like "a doll". How terrifying! Luckily, those teeth did not go near her skin and especially face and the baby was actually quite calm. Perhaps, the baby under-stood something about Khan's intentions.
Catherine knew that she needed to act fast and catch her poor child. Something happening to Khan next that confused the whole family.
While the baby stayed calm, others could not help but panic. Charlotte's mother said, "Had I not seen it with my very own eyes, I'd never have believed it." Therefore, she ran to Charlotte and carried her to safety.

While Catherine brought her baby to shelter, Khan barked madly and then fell down. ________
Finally, the whole family realized Khan was a hero of attacking a poisonous snake. ________
【答案】
While Catherine brought her baby to shelter, Khan barked madly and then fell down. He did not just fall down for nothing as he began crying. No one understood what was going on! The dog continued crying and then fell almost lifeless. Now this sent Catherine into panic mode. She focused on the dog, watching his dying eyes and realized it was clear he needed emergency care. And it occurred to her that Khan had been protecting her child instead of attacking her.
Finally, the whole family realized Khan was a hero of attacking a poisonous snake. It turns out that Khan was protecting Charlotte from a poisonous, deadly snake even though living with the family for only four days. Thus, it was lucky that Khan caught the snake and did really save that baby's life, showing his unconditional love. With the rest of the family watching in shock, Catherine hurried to the vet's clinic. Fortunately, Khan, this heroic animal, impressed even the vets with his rapid recovery and progress. Finally, the family could be reunited!

I could smell the turkey cooking, even in the attic where I was hiding out. I heard a laugh, too, and a bang from something being dropped. Our house was noisier since my new stepsister and step-mother moved in—Jen and Mom.
I called her Mom, but the word felt uncomfortable, like a pair of shoes that pinched(夹脚). I didn't remember my own mother; she had died in an accident when I was a baby. It had always been just Dad and me. We were a team. Now, so much had changed, and sometimes I wished I had the magic to change it back.。
