About 21,000 young people in 17 American states do not attend classes in school buildings.Instead, they receive their elementary and high school education by working at home on computers. The Center for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public “cyberschools,〞 and that is twice as many as two years ago.The money for students to attend cyberschool comes form the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.
Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.
Whatever the judgment of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall.It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.
Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer,
a printer, books and technical services.Parents and students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.Students at cyberschool usually do not know one another. But 56 such students who finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honor at their graduation.

Life is difficult
This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.
It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend〔超越〕it. Once we truly know that life is difficult---once we truly understand and accept it---then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or
loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, those things that hurt, instruct. It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
50. From the passage, it can be inferred that______.
A. everybody has problems
B. we become stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life
C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain
D. people like to complain about their problems
51. The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to______.
A. save space

A. most people feel life is easy
B. the writer feels life is easy
C. the writer likes to complain about his problems
D. most people complain about how hard their lives are
53. According to the passage, we give school children difficult problems to solve
in order to______.
A. encourage them to learn
B. teach them to fear the pain of solving the problem
C. help them learn to deal with pain
D. teach them how to respect from problems
54. The saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct〞 suggests that______.
A. we do not learn from experience
B. we do not learn when we are in pain
C. pain teaches us important lessons
D. pain cannot be avoided
D
“What is the most important thing you’ve done in your life?〞The question was put to me during a presentation I gave to a group of lawyers.
The answer came to me in an instant. It’s not the one I gave, because the situation was not right. As a lawyer in the entertainment industry, I knew the audience wanted to hear some amusing stories about my work with well-known people. but here’s the true answer:
The most important thing I’ve ever done occurred on October 8,1990. I began the day playing tennis with an old friend I hadn’t seen for a while. Between points we talked about what had been happening in each other’s l ives. He and his wife had just had a baby boy, who was keeping them up at night.
While we were playing, a car came screaming up the road toward the courts. It was my friend’s father, who shouted to my friend that his baby had stopped breathing and was being rushed to the hospital. In a flash my friend was in the car and gone, disappearing in a cloud of dust.
For a moment I just stood there, paralyzed(呆假设木鸡). Then I tried to figure out what I should do. Follow my friend to the hospital? There was nothing I could accomplish there, I convinced myself. My friend’s son was in the care of doctors and nurses, and nothing I could do or say would affect the outcome. Be there for
moral support? Well, maybe. But my friend and his wife both had large families, and I knew they’d be surrounded by relatives who would provide more than enough comfort and support, whatever happened. All I could do at the hospital, I decided, was to get in the way. Also, I had planned a full day with my family, who were waiting for me to get home. So I decided to head back to my house and check in my friend later. As I started my car, I realized that my friend had left his truck and keys at the courts. I now faced another problem. I couldn’t leave the keys in the truck. So I decided to go to the hospital and give him the keys.
When I arrived, I was directed to a room where my friend and his wife were waiting. As I had thought, the room was filled with family members silently watching my friend comfort his wife. I went in and stood by the door, trying to decide what to do next. Soon a doctor appeared. He approached my friend and his wife, and in a quiet voice told them that their son had died.
For a long time the two held each other and cried, unaware of the rest of us standing around in pained silence. After they had calmed themselves, the doctor suggested they spend a few moments with their son.
My friend and his wife stood up and walked past their families. When they reached the door, my friend saw me standing in the corner. He came over and hugged me and started to cry. My friend’s wife hugged me, too, and said , “Thanks for being here.〞
For the rest of that morning, I sat in the emergency room of that hospital and watched my friend and his wife hold the body of their infant son, and say goodbye.
It’s the most important thing I have ever done.
The experience taught me two lessons.
First: The most important thing I’ve ever done happened when I was completely helpless. None of the things I had learned in university, in three years of law school or in six years of legal practice were of any use in that situation. Something
terrible was happening to people I cared about, and I was powerless to change the outcome. All I could do was standing by and watching it happen. And yet it was critical that I do just that--- just be there when someone needed me.
Second: The most important thing I’ve done almost didn’t happen because of things I had learned in classroom and professional life. Law school taught me how to take a set of facts, break them down and organized them. These skills are critical for lawyers. When people come to us for help, they’re often stressed out and depend on a lawyer to think logically. But while learning to think, I almost forget how to feel. Today I have no doubt that I should have leapt into my car without hesitation and followed my friend to the hospital.
From that one experience I learned that the most important thing in life isn’t the money you make, the status you attain or the honors you achieve. The most important thing in life is the kids’ team you coach or the poem you write----or the time when you’re just somebody’s friend.
55.When he was asked about the most important thing he had done in life at a presentation, the author __________.
A felt it was not an interesting question
B. thought for a while and spoke his mind
C. gave an answer from a lawyer’s point of view
D. didn’t give the real answer
56.When he saw his friend rush to the hospital, the author could not decide whether to follow mainly because he thought _________.
A. He had to stay with his family
B. His friend did not need his help.
C. He would not be of much help
D. the baby would be in the doctor’s care
57.What can we infer from the author’s description of the scene at the hospital?
A. He found out that he was in the way.
B. He would have felt guilty if he had not been there.
C. He regretted that he went too later.
D. His friend would have felt better if he had not been there.
58.Which of the following is conveyed in this story?
A. Family and relatives can not take the place of friends.
B. More people are a great comfort when one is in trouble.
C. It is best to be here when someone needs you.
D. You can certainly help a friend if you want to.
59.The author learned from his own experience that_______.
A. what is taught in school is usually of no use.
B. a lawyer cannot learn much in classrooms
C. a lawyer should know people’s feeling first
D. he needs to be able to feel as well as think logically
60.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggests that the author_______.
A. is fond of writing poems
B. is going to coach the kid’s team
C. is determined to make friends with everybody
D. is fully aware of the importance of being helpful to those in need
第二节 〔共5小题,每题2分,总分为10分〕
根据短文内容, 从下框的A-F 选项中选出能概括出每段主题的最优选项。
选项中有一
项为哪一项多余项。
61
Don’t choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read.A
book full of new words will make you feel discouraged quickly .To understand those new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often .It seems that you are not reading the book but the dictionary .It has no fun at all! On the contrary, a too easy will only waste your time and cannot do any help .The two extremes may at last make you give up reading .So it’s better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page .
62
If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible .
Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text .This ability is quite necessary in reading .If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success〞, and your interest in reading is well stimulated .If a word really prevents you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then .I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its “troublesome image〞.
63To comprehend what you are reaging, you should think while you are reading, then form
your own ideas on some special issues. Try to scribble some lines-a very shot journal, to express
your ideas. Your writing does not need to be quite formal but very expensive. This practice can
make you communicate with the original English authors. Day by day, your way of tniking in
English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for Engliah writning. Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English. Don ’t merely take English as a
“test〞. Take it as an “entertainment〞 instead and you will enjoy it through learning. Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read,if you like. Try to read them as loudly and passionately as you can. During this process, not only can you enjoy yourself by the great emotiond of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved.
The last but not the least, keep on reading. If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining.

One day Tom and I were walking down the street while we saw an old man fall off his bike. He was badly hurt. Many people crowded around us. Someone suggested carrying the old man to the roadside, so Tom disagreed. He has learned first aid. He said that they ought to leave him where he was and checked him first. At that time the old man wasn't breathing. Tom asked me to call in the First Aid Center at once and he began to start the old man's breathing, use the mouth-to-mouth way.Within five minute, the old man began to move a little and doctors also arrived. They said that we had done was correct. I have learned from this experience that a knowledge of first aid can make a really difference.

Don’t hesitate to say “No〞
We tend not to say “No〞 when our friends ask us for help, even when their requests are unreasonable.
Before an English exam held last term, one of my close friends asked me if I could offer him the answers. Realizing that was against the school regulations, I hesitated. Shortly afterwards, however, I promised I would, afraid that my refusal could possibly have a bad effect on our friendship.Unfortunately, when I attempted to “help〞 him in the exam,
I was caught by the teacher. How ashamed and embarrassed I was at that moment! Of cource, the false news that I cheated in the exam spread among other students later and consequently I was considered dishonest by my fellow students.
From my own experience, there are circumstances under which we should never
hesitated to say “No〞, because sometimes the help asked is really beyond our ability. If we hesitate, we are actually placing
unnecessary pressure upon ourslves and will eventually bring ourselves great losses.。
