第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Life is not always easy. One day you wake up feeling like you can take over the world, and the next day you wake up feeling like all you want to do is to lie in bed and hide from everything.
People walk into your life, grab your hand, and lead you through the most beautiful path you’ve known, but sometimes the same pe ople let go of your hand without warning, and you become stranded at a place where you never thought you’d feel lost.
Let’s be honest, sometimes everything is going so great and it seems like nothing could go wrong, but right when you begin to think that, something so horrible comes crashing down and all of a sudden more problems come drowning around you and you just feel so hopeless because it’s so bad…
It’s so hard to understand why such things happen in life, and I personally wish I had an answer to that “why” you always ask yourself, but all I can say is no matter how hard life gets, you have to keep going. The life around you will never stop going on.
I’ll be honest and say that sometimes I feel a little bit worried and all I can think is “Will I be able to keep up? What if everything goes too fast?” But I realize that being scared and living with that burden of running away from problems only slow me down even more.
And I’ve come to the point where I believe that because life never stops, I shouldn’t st op either. It’s okay to take a break and to give yourself time to heal, but you cannot give up and you cannot quit.
Keep positive, fill your heart with gratitude for what you already have, and always
remind yourself to be humble and true to who you are!
1、How does the author illustrate “Life is not always easy”?
A.By making comparisons B.By using some famous sayings
C.By presenting his own experience D.By listing statistics

C.helpful D.considerate
3、Which saying can exhibit the author’s attitude towards life?

C.A good medicine tastes bitter.
D.Think it over before you leap

23.(8分)Dave Merry and his tools have been through a lot together. The tools helped Dave, now 80, repair his home in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he and his wife, Annette Merry, lived for 46 years and raised three children. The table saw, the jointer plane, the drill press, and the dozens of other power and hand tools had pride of place in his carefully organized workshop. “I had a whole setup, and it was beautiful,” says Dave, a retired engineer.
But then Annette experienced a stroke(中风) that left her relying on a walker to get around, and the Merrys decided to move into assisted living. Dave’s workshop was obviously a minor consideration given Annette’s condition, but the family knew that giving it up, on top of everything else, would hurt.
It was the Merrys’ daughter who came up with a possible solution. She’d heard about some people who were setting up a tool library—a nonprofit facility that would lend out tools just as a regular library lends books. Might Dad be interested in donating his?
“I said yes,” Dave says.
The people creating the St. Paul Tool Library were thrilled. They had expected it would take a year to collect enough tools to make their facility fully functional. Instead it took one day: the day Dave donated his.
The library’s founders drove over to the Merrys’ house and picked everything up themselves. The library is housed in the basement of the American Can Factory. Members pay an annual fee (from $20 to $120) for unlimited tool use and a varying number of visits to the workshop. And they get an extra benefit: Dave Merry. “Almost every time we’re open, Dave’s here,” says one of the founders, Peter Hoh. “It means a lot to me to be able to go and use my tools,” Dave says. “But it mea ns just as much to help DIYers use the tools properly.”
As Hoh puts it, “This is his workshop now.”

(8分)You can’t see your sleeping pets brain waves, but its behavior can tell you when your cat might be dreaming. If you watch closely, you’ll see that as she falls asleep, her breathing becomes slow and regular with her body still. She has entered the
first stage of sleep, called slow-wave sleep. After about 15 minutes you’ll notice a change in her breathing. Her eyes move under her closed lids, her paws twitch (抽动) and she flicks (尤指用手指或手快速地轻抚) an ear. She has entered dreaming. Although she twitches and makes little grunting (嘟嘟) noises, messages from her brain to the large muscles in her legs are blocked, so she can’t run about. She is in a state of “sleep paralysis (麻痹)”.
Michel Jouvet, a French scientist, interrupted their sleep paralysis. Even though they were completely asleep, the dreaming cats began to run for balls that Jouvet couldn’t see and arched (弓起) their backs at unseen enemies. He figures he was watching them act out their dreams! Obviously, the dreaming cats seemed to be practising important cat skills: following, pouncing (猛扑), and fighting.
In another study, Matt Wilson recorded rats brain waves while they learned mazes (迷宫). One day, he left the brain-wave-recording machine on while the rats fell asleep. The pattern of brain waves in the sleeping rats matched the pattern from the maze so closely that Wilson could figure out exactly which part of the maze each rat was dreaming about!
Many researchers now think that in both people and animals, one purpose of dreams is to practise important skills and figure out recent learning. This may explain why so many people dream about fighting and escaping, skills that were probably important to our ancestors, and why dreaming affects our ability to learn.
Do all animals dream? From looking at the brain waves of sleeping animals. How often animals dream seems to be tied to body size. Cats dream about every 15 minutes, mice every 9 minutes, and elephants every 2 hours. And though cows and horses usually sleep standing up, they only dream when lying down.
1、What does Michel Jouvet find in his study?
A.The dreaming cats are in a state of body paralysis.
B.The dreaming cats often practise their important skills.
C.The eyes of dreaming cats moved while bodies are still.
D.The muscles of the dreaming cats are blocked to move.
2、What can you know about dreaming from the passage?
A.Dreaming a lot can help humans learn more.
B.Learning mazes is the basic skill for cats to learn.
C.Rats often dreams to make certain their recent learning
D.Fighting and escaping are not important skills for ancestors.
3、Which animal may dream most frequently?
A.Rats. B.Dogs.
C.Cows. D.Elephants
4、How does the author develop his passage?
A.By making comparisons. B.By using figures
C.By telling stories D.By showing facts
25.(10分)I’ve been researching my family tree since 1998 ,and I’ve long been curious about DNA as a way to learn more about my roots. The technology has come a long way in the last decade, and it’s become more affordable too. Finally, I went ahead and ordered a Y-DNA test.
The results came in my email inbox from the DNA lab! When I logged in to see the results, there are 29 living people today with whom I share a common direct male ancestor in about the last 1,000 years. They live in Ireland, England, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and probably elsewhere.
I had two close matches, and the rest were more distant. They both live in Ireland! What makes the connection to these two men so interesting is that most Irish genealogical (族谱的)records were burned in f ires in Dublin and don’t exist today. Without them, it ‘s hard to trace Irish roots any further back than the 1800s. I’ve written emails to both of them and hope to hear back !
I did some more research on my Y-DNA and found my direct male ancestors were Celtics. They seem to have lived in Western Europe at the time of Ancient Rome. Migration patterns show that my DNA group likely originated in Western Asia, living there 20, 000 and 30, 000 years ago. There are relatives with similar DNA going thousands of years back in what is now Iran, India, Syria, Israel and Turkey.
I was so excited by these results that I decided to trace my motherly line too. My DNA is already at the lab, so now I just have to wait another month or so, and I’m sure to find more interesting things.
1、What is the author’s purpose of doing a Y-DNA test?
A.To satisfy his curiosity about DNA.
B.To know more about his ancestors.
C.To find his families separated long ago.
D.To rewrite genealogical records in Ireland.
2、Which of the following ca n replace the underlined word “matches” in paragraph 3? A.friends
B.relatives
C.ancestors
D.competitions
3、Where did the author’s family root in?
A.Ireland.
B.Western Asia.
C.Ancient Rome.
D.Western Europe.
4、How did the author feel about the results of the DNA test?
A.Inspired.
B.Relieved.
C.Confused.
D.Discouraged.
