A friend of mine, a foodie(吃货), asked me whether I had seen the TV series Chef’s Table. Of course I hadn’t because I’m not that into food but I do get hungry for adventure sometimes. When watching, I was attracted by his episode of Chef’s Table. Mallmann makes choices and he does not plan. When he was young, he looked for mentors(导师) and experiences, not books or paths. He honored his roots but embraced the world and sought things and places he did not know. He conquered cities and withdrew to the wild at will. He does not cling to one lifestyle and he does not bend to expectation. He seems entirely in hot pursuit of life and happiness and honoring his true self along the way.
It made me lost in thought. I was once spontaneous, casual and even open to chance.
I had a backpack, and it was all I had. But I got older. I had to have a plan and pay bills to look after our three kids and our home. I became to pretend me. And it was fine. It was necessary and it worked. Then I watched Mallmann doing what makes him happy and I lost control. That’s how I was supposed to live! Be true to myself.
I have already reconciled(协调) with the shame of being inspired by a TV show. Mallmann is inspired by nature, food and language. Me? My life-changing moment came from watching Netflix with my dollar store reading glasses on. No wonder I feel slightly unfulfilled.
After watching Mallmann, I felt as if I’d stood up from a cozy campfire and
the blanket of my life just fell to the ground. I was literally never the same after that point. I submitted my leave of absence application less than a month later.
I am now full of excitement. I am leaving my steady teaching job and a good salary (although maybe not forever), and I am going to do things that feed my soul.
24. Which of the following will Mallmann refuse to do?
A. Honour his roots.
B. Make no choices.
C. Give in to expectation.
D. Hug the world.
25. What does the underlined part “the blanket〞 in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The material to make a fire.
B. Blanket to cover one’s body
C. Something to make it hard to find information.
D. The cover to pretend the true self.
26. Why does the author quit her job?
A. She tries to feed her soul.
B. She dislikes the job.
C. She runs after a better salary.
D. She wants to find excitement.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The TV chef and me
B. The powerful TV chef
C. The TV chef turned my life around
D. The TV series Chef’s Table
C
In his widely-read book, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, sociologist Robert Putnam examined vast stores of data that showed a troubling truth: Americans were becoming more disconnected from each other---and in that isolation was a deep communal disengagement(公一共脱离) and personal
dissatisfaction.
That book came out in 2000, before the age of mobile technology truly took hold. Last year, a new book built on the conversation——Ruth whippman’s America the Anxious: How Our pursuit of Happiness Is Creating a Nation of Nervous Wrecks. Whippman looked around at the culture of self-help, self-care and happiness-seeking in today’s America, noticing a key shortcoming in the narrative of what is supposed to bring us authentic joy.
Too often, she says, we are told, “Happiness comes from within.〞 But what we should understand is, “Happiness is other people.〞Whippman says, “Study after study shows that good social relationships are a ‘necessary condition for happiness,’ meaning that humans can’t actually be happy without them. This is a finding that cuts across race, age, income and social class so overpowering that it dwarfs(使相形见绌的) any other factor.〞
Social engagement doesn’t have to mean parti es or huge circles of friends. As whippman writes, “When asked, people across the board consistently report themselves as happier when they are around other people than when they are alone.〞This can mean a quiet cup of tea shared with a trusted friend, or a small book club, walking group or a movie night with a neighbor.
Christmas Day is a wonderful time to reflect on the power of community, the real joy that comes from accepting the fact that human beings are giftedly social creatures who boom when we foster relationships in ways that work for us.
As Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so
much.〞 Together, we can make happiness a daily reality for ourselves and others.
28. What does Whippman mean by “Happiness is other peo ple〞 in Paragraph 3?
A. Our happiness is given by others.
B. Our happiness is to be shared with others.
C. Our happiness comes from our deep feelings.
D. Our happiness relies on our social connection.
29. What is similar between Robert Putna m’s book and Whippman’s?
A. Their conclusion.
B. Their popularity.
C. Their researchers.
D. Their targeted readers.
30. What does Whippman suggest for better social relationships?
A. Keeping away from friends.
B. Attending more parties.
C. Staying with people who have the same mind
D. Living with family members.
31. What can we infer from what Helen Keller said?
A. We should live happily.
B. We should be social creatures.
C. We should read Whippma n’s books.
D. We should see our life from another aspect.
D
A shocking revelation in the journal Biological Conservation suggests that more than 40% of the insects around us could become extinct in next few decades.
Although some species of insects are vectors〔带菌者〕of serious diseases, or others destroy crop, a world without insects is unimaginable. Their importance in interconnected ecosystems and food chains can never be neglected. Insects have essential roles in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems.
There are 17 times as many insects as humans, and these numbers are essential for proper functioning of all ecosystems. Insects are responsible for pollinating around 75% of the crops in the world and also serve as food for other creatures. They replenish soils and keep the number of pests in check.
The primary cause of this extinction is loss of habitat. If it is the grasslands or wetlands, everything is disappearing in man’s quest towards intensive agriculture and urbanization.
Another cause of this decline is the excessive use of pesticides(杀虫剂), fertilizers and introduced invasive species. Climate change may also cause emergence(出现〕of new pests and other vector-borne insects.
The biggest threat of Insect Armageddon comes from Puerto Rico, where due to 2 degree rise in temperature, there has been 60 fold decline in invertebrate〔无脊椎的〕population since the 1970s.
However, insects getting extinct is a global crisis. But the good thing about insects is, we all can do our bit to save them. We all can maintain pesticide-free kitchen gardens and organic farms. We can plant flowers and trees and invite them to nest again.
Maybe this tragedy would have never arisen in the first place and you would not
have to read this article, if the world had stopped using all kinds of pesticides immediately after Rachel Carson had published the Silent Spring. Conserving the insect biodiversity is not only our responsibility;it is a necessity because if they go, so will we.
32. What does the underlined word "replenish" mean in paragraph 3?
A. supply
B. change
C. decrease
D. worsen
33. Which of the following is true according to this passage?
A. All insects harmful to humans and crops should be wiped out.
B. There are far more insects than there are humans.
C. The insect biodiversity has little to do with human activities.
D. To protect crops, farmers are advised to use as many pesticides and fertilizers as possible.
34. What does the author really mean by saying "if they go, so will we" in last paragraph?
A. Humans and insects should live in different places.
B. Humans can follow insects wherever they go.
C. Humans should learn to protect themselves from the harm of insects.
D. Humans should learn to coexist with other living things such as insects.
35. What’s the author’s attitude when writing the article?
A. Concerned.
B. Disappointed.
C. Indifferent.
D. Optimistic. 第二节〔一共5小题;每一小题分,满分是分)

Kevin had been eagerly waiting for the holidays to arrive. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling (使惊吓) him.
It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!〞screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.〞
Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this ba d. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life.
The next few days were horrible for Kevin.
After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a Pepsi bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling Pepsi all over the painting and totally ruining it.
The next day was even worse.
Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds
from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes.
One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from h is house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.〞This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

On the first blank page of the album, Kevin found there were two small words: Dick Brown. This was a big surprise for both of them. Actually, Max had gone to another house by mistake. The door of the house was unlocked and nobody was there. Max went
