In doing so, you attract talents that want to contribute to that environment, creating a virtuous cyclefor the company.// Shanghai's leadership has worked hard to create an environment where businesses can succeed. For example, Shanghai's transportation links to the world, including Pudong International Airport and the new deep water port facility, have achieved world-class status// We live in an era where innovation is central to economic growth and prosperity. It is comfortable to hold onto the old ways of doing business. But innovation is hard because it usuallyleads to change. Innovation requires new ideas, new processes, and new institutions.// New technologies and approaches can radically change an existing market, creating new customers and competitions. But innovation and its accompanying disruption can be managed through good leadership, a long term strategy, and good people.President Hu Jintao stated at the beginning of this year that “Innovation is the core of the nation's competitiveness.”

Poverty jumped sharply to 13.2 percent, an 11-year high.No one should be surprised at the increased disparity. Analysts attributed the widening gap to the wave of layoffsin the economic downturn that have devastated household budgets. They said while the richest Americans may be seeing reductions in executive pay, those at the bottom of theincome ladder are often unemployed and struggling to get by.

(1)American mythology loves nothing more than the reluctant hero: the man -- it is usually a man -- whose naturaltalents have destined him for more than obliging obscurity. George Washington, we are told, was a leader who would have preferred to have been a farmer. Thomas Jefferson, a writer. Martin Luther King, Jr., a preacher. These men were rousedfrom lives of perfunctory achievement, our legends have it,not because they chose their own exceptionalism, but because we, the people, chose it for them. We -- seeing greatness in them that they were too humble to observe themselves -- conferred on them uncommon paths. Historical circumstance became its own call of duty, and the logic of democracyproved itself through the answer.

Crime control is a pretty complex question, the first step, of course, is deterrence to stop people from committing crime in the first place. That involves the economy. Are there enough jobs for everyone? There should be. And social structure, are there enough support system? And so on. When people are convicted, and put in prison, then the goal should be to have reform programs inside prisons. So th ey want person comes out, they don’t return to a life of crime. If the education program and drug treatment program have been cut, convicted criminals are not being reformed.

M: There is a small number of exceptional people whoplay a huge role in the transmissions of epidemic ideas. Icall them Mavens, Connectors and Salesmen. W: Say it again?M: Mavens, Connectors and Salesman. Connectors are the kind of people who know everybody. They have extraordinary social ties. Well, if I do this names test in the Manhattan phonebook, and you go down the list. Every time you see a name you know, you give yourself a point. Well, most people score like 25, 30. Someone scores like 120 or 130. That kindof person is incredibly in generating word-of-mouth epidemics. If they like something and get hold of some idea, they can spread 5 or 6 times further than the average person.W: Who are those people, what defines them?M: Well, these are extraordinarily social people with alot of energy who are consumed by the task of getting to know people, of meeting people, of keeping in touch with them. They make phone calls all day long.W: I am afraid I am one of them.M: This is not typical behavior. This is a behavior that is actually rare. Most of us don’t do that. And I am someone who is not that way. I can't start a word-of-mouth epidemic because I simply do n’t know enough people. I can’t get it outside my own immediate circle of friends. Someone hasfriends all over the place. They can spread the news about a new restaurant, or a new movie, or something far and wide ina very, very short time.W: These are the Connectors. Who are the Mavens and who are the Salesmen?M: The Mavens are people who have specialized knowledge. If you examine why you make certain decisions, why do you shop somewhere, why do you go to a certain restaurant, you’ll find that you a re relying on the same person over and over again for recommendations. Those people I call Mavens. My friend Ereal is a Maven, who knows all about the restaurants in lower Manhattan. If I want to know about the hot new restaurant, I call Ereal. Well, all o f Ereal’s friends call Ereal, and if you go to restaurants in lower Manhattan and look around the room, you will see friends ofEreal. The restaurant market is an epidemic market, which is controlled by a group of Ereals. I don’t think there are very many of them. There are probably two dozen of them. That’s true of lots of things. That’s true of shopping, and books and movies. If a Maven gets together with a Connector, then you begin see why a word-of-mouth epidemic might happen. Someone who knows everyone in combination with someone who knows everything is a really powerful connection.W: And then introduce the Salesmen.M: Well, those people are incredibly persuasive. And again, that’s a very rare and unusual trait.W: Leaves me out, you see. I ca n connect, but I can’t sell.M:Well, they are separate categories. I’ve met with a guy who is known as one of the greatest salesman in America today. When you meet with someone like that, you begin torealize why trans happen. They happen because someone who has this extraordinary natural ability to win you over. When they get hold of an idea, they can really make it go a long way.Questions:1. What’s the main topic of this conversation?2. Which of the following descriptions does not apply to Connectors?3. Which of the following statements best defines the Mavens?4. According to the conversation, which of the following groups does the man’s friend Ereal belong to?5. What can we tell about all three groups of people?【解析】本段以对话形式介绍了三种人Maven,Connector,Salesman的含义,及各自对transmissions of epidemic ideas的作用,并给出明确的例证。

现在还能记得raised the forcasts, estimated, up to 8.4 percent, fiscal, monetary policy, director, optimistic等等5.

The effect of governmental expenditures on the total economy varies with both the level of utilization of laborand capital in the economy at the time of the expenditure, and the segment of the economy which receives the expenditure. If the economy as a whole or the segment of the economy which is the focus of the expenditure is operating at capacity or close to capacity, then the expenditure’s major effects will tend to be inflationary, and will not generate much employment of capital and labor. If the economy or sector is operating at much less than full employment, the expenditure will produce a genuine (non-inflationary) rise in the GNP.A true measure of the effect of governmental increase in the amount of money made available, then, is not the simple dollar value of the initial injection but the cumulativeeffect of this injection through spending and re-spending. In the optimum case the initial expansion of income flow couldbe great enough to produce tax revenues in excess of the original "deficit spending" or the "tax cut", so thatdeficits are not only smaller than the increased GNP but are recouped. In Keynesian economics the fundamental point of government policy clearly is not budget-balancing butspending in the event of unused productive capacity and unemployment. Spending increases productivity. Thisproductivity resulting from federal spending has overwhelmed the older economic myths of the balanced budget where government is conceived of as just another business firm.

(A)英语翻译高级口译英译中文化历史(一)(总分:100.02,做题时间:90分钟)一、试题1(总题数:1,分数:40.00)A commonplace criticism of American culture is its excessive preoccupation with material goods and corresponding neglect of the human spirit. Americans, it is alleged, worship only "the almighty dollar". We scramble to "keep up with the Joneses". The love affair between Americans and their automobiles has been a continuing subject of derisive commentary by both foreign and domestic critics. Americans are said to live by a quantitative ethic. Bigger is better, whether in bombs or sedans. The classical virtues of grace, harmony, and economy of both means and ends are lost on most Americans. As a result, we are said to be swallowing up the world's supply of natural resources, which are irreplaceable. Americans constitute 6 percent of the world's population but consume over a third of the world's energy. These are now familiar complaints. Indeed, in some respects Americans may believe the "pursuit of happiness" to mean the pursuit of material things.(分数:40.00)(1).A commonplace criticism of American culture is its excessive preoccupation with material goods and corresponding neglect of the human spirit.(分数:5.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:(人们常常批评美国文化过分热衷于物质产品,却忽略了人的精神需求。

A former Government chief scientist once told methat weshould always have a PlanB ready in case Plan A doesn ' t work -or doesn ' t happen. He was speaking in relation to the possibility of “geo- engineering ” the climate if it becomes obvious that global warm ing is begi nning to tip irrevocably towards a pote ntially dan gerous state. He could only say this once he was out of office of course because the official Government view at the time - as it is now - was that “thereis no Plan B ” in relation to climate change, that the only conceivable way of avoidi ng dan gerous global temperature in creases in the future is to curb the producti on of gree nhouse gas emissi ons now.Geo-e ngin eeri ng is defi ned as the deliberate, large-scale in order to limit un desirable climate cha nge, but it is see n by man yas a tech ni calfix too far. At its most outla ndish, geo-e ngin eeri ng env isages putt ing gia nt mirrors in space to deflect incoming solar radiati on, but it also in cludes more benign in terve nti ons, such as solar powered “ artificial trees ” in the desert for soak ing up carb on dioxide in the air.Despite the official view of there being no Pla n B, however, last week' s fifth report by the has placed geo -engin eeri ng firmly on theage nda - eve n if the scie ntific panel rather deni grates the idea as probably un workable and pote ntially dan gerous. Nevertheless, for some critics of geo-e ngin eeri ng the mere men ti on of the con cept in such an official and high-profile publicati on is eno ugh to see red.In deed, the Can adia n-based ETCGroup of en viro nmen talists, perceived a Russian-led conspiracy to subvert the IPCCprocess. Russia had insisted on the additi on of geo-e ngin eeri ng to the report and it is Russia where many geo-e ngin eeri ng projects are being tested, the ETC Group claims. Before getting carried away with the inclusion for the first time ofgeo-engineering in an IPCCreport, it is worth pointing out that the panel emphasises the in here nt flaws of the proposals to coun ter risi ng temperatures. Deflecti ng sun light with artificially created white clouds over the oceans, for instanee, would do nothing to prevent theacidificati on of the ocea ns an d, if it had to be stopped for any reas on, global surface英语翻译资格考试高级口译模拟试题及讲解temperatures would soon rise again even higher than before. In short, if we rely on a technical fix to , rather than addressing the root problem, we could become addicted to the illusion that all is well when, in fact, all that weare doing is delaying the inevitable, while increasing the risk of some serious unintended consequences, which history tells us are never far away from big engineering proposals of this kind.Take for instance the relatively small-scale geo-engineering project to divert the rivers running into the Aral Sea of the former Soviet Union. Half a century ago the Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world with a thriving commercial fishery, but by 2007 it had declined to about 10 per cent of its original size, with fishing boats stranded in the middle of a toxic salt pan.Soviet scientists diverted water from two rivers running into the Aral Sea to irrigate fields of cotton and other crops. But in the end they created a barren, dusty landscape where once there was a sea filled with wildlife. Toxins and salt blown from the Aral's parched basement even threatened the very crops that the project was meant to generate. So when some people talk about the possibility of “fixing ” the climate with technological interventions rather than cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, let's not forget history. Perhaps HM Government isright: there is no Plan B.Talking of carbon dioxide, I have just returned from an interesting visit to the Czech Republic where health tourism, rather than being frowned upon, is positively encouraged. What has this got to do with carbon dioxide, you may ask? Well one of the more curious, if not bizarre “medical ” treatments you can buyis a dip in a dry bath of carbon dioxide. For 20 minutes or so you bathe everything below your waist (fully clothed) in an atmosphere of “natural ” carbon dioxide pumped from underground sources. It is said by those who sell it to cure a range of conditions and even acts like a dose of Viagra. Strictly in the interests of science I volunteered. I intend to publish myfindings in a peer-reviewed scientific jour nal —that is if I can find one prepared to overlook my limited setof data points. 1、What is geo-engineering? What are the possible international measures of geo-engineering?2、What are the views of the critics of geo-engineering?3、Why does the author introduce the small scale geo-engineering project?

Mass urbanization of the world’s population is an unprecedented trend worldwide. The most important reason why people are moving to cities is economic. People are moving to the cities because that’s where they can find jobs and earn money. Until the 20th century, the major source of employment, full and part-time, was farming. Now, according to recent statistics, no more than 15 percent of all jobs are connected to farming. Jobs now are being created in information technology, manufacturing and service areas, such as tourism and financing, and all of these new jobs are in or around major cities.
