English:Nowadays, with the rapid development of technology, there is an ongoing debate about whether traditional books will eventually be replaced by e-books. While some argue that e-books offer convenience and accessibility, others believe that traditional books hold unique value that cannot be replaced. In my opinion, both forms of reading have their own merits and will likely coexist in the future. E-books provide instant access to a vast array of literature, making it easier for people to carry and access multiple books at once. Additionally, they often come with features like search functions and interactive elements, enhancing the reading experience. However, traditional books have an irreplaceable charm. The tactile sensation of flipping through pages, the smell of ink on paper, and the emotional connection to physical books are experiences that e-books cannot replicate. Moreover, traditional books hold cultural significance and historical value, serving as tangible artifacts of human knowledge and creativity. Therefore, while e-books offer undeniable benefits, traditional books willcontinue to have a place in society, cherished for their tangible qualities and cultural significance.

Although it is efficient, its side effects are also enormous. On the one hand, examinations lower the standards of teaching. Since teachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. Nosubjectsjcan.be taught successfullywith jjntenttojtake.examinations. If that is the case, why cannot we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable than examinations?。

Students Rating of Their TeachersNowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as for teachers to grade students. In some universities students rating has even become the only source of information on teaching effectiveness..This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the rating system, They hold that since students attend the teachers classes every day, they should have their opinion about their teachers effectiveness. Others, on the contrary, are strongly against it. They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students rating forms. Students should not be expected to judge whether the materials they use are up to date or how well the teacher knows about the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers colleagues.I think students rating of their teachers is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers performance. Instead of rating the teachers knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they have learned in a course, and to report on such things as a teachers ability to communicate with students, his or her relationship with students, and his or her ability to arouse students interest in the subject.

Helping strangers has always been considered as a treasured virtue of mankind. We need help from others throughout our life, whenever we travel to other places or stay at home. On the other hand, helping others can make us happy. We feel great joy when we are trusted, needed and able to give a hand. However, some people are cautious when it comes to helping strangers. They say that helping others involves risks of getting hurt or cheated. Lending a hand to a stranger often puts us in a vulnerable position for it means trusting someone we do not even know. Moreover, there are times when we have physical limitations. For instance, we cant swim but a girl is drowning, what should we do? If we are blind to that limitation, giving a hand would conversely take our life.In my opinion, we should still offer what we can do to help those needed strangers. Meanwhile, we should beware of getting cheated and use our common sense to tell whether the strangers are real needed people or just professional cheats. Detecting anything unusual, we should defend ourselves or turn to the police. 1】Do we rely too much on computers? Yes, we do. Almost everything we do and every aspect of our life is affected by modern technology with computers above all. We use computers in business, public services, education and entertainment. However, over-reliance on computer may give rise to some problems. One is that people are more likely to make spelling mistakes when they have to handwrite something. Another is that people are so dependent on computers that they have lost the ability to think for themselves. If “the computer says XYZ”, then XYZ must be true. If you want to make yourself an idiot, just tell him “that is what the computer said”.In my opinion, computers make our lives easier but we should never rely on them completely. These machines should be used as tool to aid work rather than the only tool. Otherwise, chaos can occur when suddenly our computers crash or what is worse, refuse to take our orders.【范文2】With the development of science and technology, computers have played an increasingly important role in our daily life. Computers make our life more convenient. We can not only finish our essays online, but also buy some daily commodities and play games online. However, its estimated that people spend more than three hours on surfing the internet. Now more and more people become weak and shortsighted. It is because they surf the Internet day and night but without rest. In addition, the reason why students rely on too much on computers is that they can find many reference materials online. So students become less independent in thinking for themselves now.All in all, we cant live without computer, but we should try to go out to do some exercise with our friends. Whats more, it is time for us to finish our assignments independently instead of finding the reference answer online.。

A recent investigation shows that about 80 percent of pupils have private tutors.Such a popular practice indicates that people are attaching greater importance to education. Many parents, for various reasons, missed the chance of obtaining a good education. When their children meet with difficulties in study, they are helpless. Private tutoring is the only solution. As private tutoring is usually one-to-one, the teacher knows the strong points as well as the weak points of the pupil clearly. However, private tutoring has its own disadvantages. For one thing, it takes up so much of the pupils time that they can hardly find enough time for rest and entertainment, which are essential for their physical and mental health. For another, some teachers, busy “shuttling” fromone family to another, tend to neglect their regular teaching duties. Whats more, some teachers are eager to help pupils do well in the test, offering the so-called tips for test-taking rather than help them acquire what is more meaningful.Generally speaking, its disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Greater emphasis should be laid on classroom teaching and practice, on the improvement of teaching quality and on the tapping of pupils potentials. Only in this way can a new generation be healthily brought up. Goal Setting Is ImportantDirections: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Goal Setting Is Important by commenting on John Ruskins famous remark, “Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.”You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Goal Setting Is Important“Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.” This philosophical wisdom by John Ruskin, one of the greatest British writers, tells us that goal setting is extremely important in life. Why is goal setting so important? The main importance of goal setting is that it provides us with direction and purpose. When we have goals, we know what we want to achieve so that we can focus our mindson a single worthwhile target and avoid getting distracted easily. Personal goalsetting also provides us with motivation to achieve what we want to achieve.Goal setting is of especial significance for todays students. A study reveals that when students set goals, they learn the importance of taking responsibility, of minimizing excuses and of helping others. Goal setting is a lifelong skill that first helps students succeed in school and then later in life.。

Enhance Awareness to Guard against Campus Thefts1. Enhance Awareness to Guard against Campus Thefts"If you dont want to wake up and find you have no pants to wear, youd better put them on in sleep," goes a popular joke among students. Obviously, campus thefts have become increasingly annoying as they occur far more often than before. And it seems that the thieves are less choosy these days, with their targets ranging widely from bikes, cell phones, purses, pre-paid IC cards to sunglasses, bags, and even underwear. In short, anything that worth a dime is likely to be stolen. What makes students the easy targets? The reasons are not hard to find. But I believe of all these reasons, the lack of anti-theft alertness is the most important. For lack of alertness, the students tend to leave the doors and windows wide open during sleep at noon or at night in summer. For the same reason, theyll also leave their bikes unlocked before a storeor by a road, or forget to take away their personal stuff before they go out of the classroom to make a phone call. These acts undoubtedly have increased their exposure to the light-fingered monsters. In order to minimize possible losses, the students must stay on guard in the first place, as awareness of the thefts around often makes a big difference. To be more specific, the students should not hide any tempting amount of cash in the dorm. Put it in the bank instead. Besides, do not leave any valuable items unattended. Take them wherever you go. In addition, its advisable to develop a neighbourhood watch programme with other students in the dorm and neighbouring dorms. Its Time to Stop Software Piracy1. Its Time to Stop Software PiracyChina has often been criticized for the rampant practice of software piracy. Take a look around. We operate on pirated Windows systems, defend PC security with pirated Kaspersky anti-virus programmes, process files with pirated Microsoft Office, draft 3D designs with pirated AutoCAD, refine pictures with pirated Adobe Photoshop, and study English with pirated Kingsofts electronic dictionaries and translators. Its no exaggeration that pirated software is everywhere. The logic behind the phenomenon is simple and clear: if a pirated copy is available for just a tiny fraction of the normal price, not to speak of many of the free downloads online, who would pay for an authentic copy? Cheaper prices aside, easy access is another important factor. With such a large gathering of pirated upgrades around, who would bother to spend time and money searching the stores for an authorized yet outdated version?Despite these apparent benefits, the practice of software piracy should be banned, because it represents unfair competition and by nature its a no-win situation. But how? Two approaches are to be taken at the same time: Technically, software developers should enhance their antipiracy engineering, so that cracking the software should be virtually impossible. And legally, the government should also tighten its antipiracy laws and toughen up the penalties, so that violations should be costly.。

You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:1. Sample Answers:Part I:The Differences between Studying English in China and Studying English in an English-Speaking CountryStudying English in China and studying English in an English-speaking country are two completely different experiences. In China, the focus of English education tends to be on grammar rules, vocabulary memorization, and test preparation. Students spend a lot of time learning the language in a classroom setting, which can be effective for improving their reading and writing skills. However, they often lack the opportunity to practice speaking and listening in real-life situations. On the other hand, studying English in an English-speaking country provides students with immersion in the language and culture. They have the chance to interact with native speakers on a daily basis, which helps them improve their speaking and listening skills dramatically. They also have access to authentic materials such as newspapers, magazines, and movies, which can enhance their reading and listening abilities.Personally, I believe that studying English in anEnglish-speaking country is more effective in terms of language acquisition. However, studying English in China can also be beneficial if students make an effort to practice speaking and listening outside of the classroom.Part II:The Importance of Reading in English LearningReading plays a crucial role in English learning as it helps students improve their vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills. By reading extensively, students are exposed to a wide range of words and sentence structures, which can help them express themselves more clearly and fluently. Additionally, reading provides insight into the culture and customs of English-speaking countries, which is essential for effective communication. To utilize reading to improve their English proficiency, students should read a variety of materials such as newspapers, novels, and academic articles. They should also make a habit of looking up unfamiliar words and phrases to expand their vocabulary. Furthermore, students can practice reading aloud to improve their pronunciation and intonation. In my opinion, reading is a vital component of English learning that should not be overlooked. It not only enhances language skills but also broadens the mind and enriches one's understanding of the world.Overall, by recognizing the differences between studying English in China and studying English in an English-speaking country, as well as the importance of reading in English learning, students can effectively improve their English proficiency and communication skills.。

6. WRITINGPART VI WRITING1.The following chart shows source distribution of vocational school graduates. Look at the chart carefully and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should interpret the chart, state the reasons and give your comments. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Sources of V ocational School Graduates The chart above clearly demonstrates that nearly half of vocational school graduates come from moderately developed regions in the middle and western parts of China, 37% are from developed regions in the eastern and coastal areas of China. We can see clearly from the chart that vocational school graduates mainly come from developed and moderately developed regions. There is no doubt that the change of people’s view on vocational education and the demand of job market lead to the craze for vocational education in these areas. For one thing, people no longer consider university education as the only way to success. Many vocational schools adjust their curriculum directly to the requirements of economic development. Those schools also have fostered a great many successful talents. For another, job market is in great need of professional talents of different trades. Compared with thousands of university graduates struggling in job hunting, vocational school graduates with skills are often hard to get. Taking into account what has been discussed above, we can arrive at the conclusion that vocational school graduates will be in great demand in recent years.I believe that we should not confine our view of talents with prejudice. Given time and opportunities, vocational school students can be also very successful. It would be great if we can help them find their ways to success.

1. WritingPart I Writing (30 minutes)1.Stepping Away from Online Games1. Stepping Away from Online Games Nowadays, more and more college students are addicted to online games. Those games may be fun and exciting, but are very harmful to those addicts. In my opinion, there are many disadvantages of game addiction. Firstly, online games take up a lot of players’ time for study. Many of the addicts found themselves forced to drop out of school for poor academic performance. Secondly, addicts tend to isolate themselves from the reality. What’s worse, indulging in the virtual world for a long time, they are more liable to suffer mental problem and physical collapse. Finally, players are exposed to too much violent and unhealthy material, which is definitely harmful to their growth. In short, I cannot see any benefits from online games. Studying should be the primary concern of college students. Therefore, I do hope they can step away from online games.2.How to Eliminate Cheating on Campus?1. How to Eliminate Cheating on Campus? Nowadays, instead of listening attentively in class and working hard after class, a number of students adopt all kinds of dishonest methods to get high scores in examinations. It has become such a serious problem that it has aroused the concern from the whole society. To put an end to such a serious problem, in my mind, it calls for the efforts from all sides. First of all, the university authority should make it clear that any cheating behavior in the examinations, from whispering, copying, and receiving answers via mobile phones to asking ringers for help, will be severely punished with no exception. Moreover, teachers of all subjects should go all the way to restore honesty by setting an example for the youth through speaking sincerely and behaving truthfully. Last but not least, young students, the future of our nation, should view integrity as the prerequisite to an upright and responsible citizen so as to learn to despise and fight against dishonest behaviors throughout the life. Only when all of us join in the efforts of eliminating cheating at all levels can we expect to have a cleaner society and a more beautiful future.3.Should Basic Living Skills Become Compulsory at School?1. Should Basic Living Skills Become Compulsory at School? In many developed countries, the teaching of basic living skills has long been much stressed. Then some people consider this course should also be listed compulsory at school in China. They believe it’s a most useful form of education, which will benefit students for the rest of their life. However, another group of people insist the new course is unnecessary despite its well-meaning intention. In their opinions, the teaching of basic living skills is family’s responsibility, instead of school’s obligation. Moreover, the development of basic living skills is a process, not something that examinations can impart to students. For my part, I agree encouraging students to develop basic living skills is a good thing, but the unsuitable education environment in China has to be noticed. Besides, the heavy study burden on students, if more classes are added, should also be taken into account. Therefore, 1 don’t think it’s time to make basic living skills compulsory at school for the time being.4.Private Schools and Training Schools1. Private Schools and Training Schools With the development of the society and economy, there arise various private schools and training schools, which mainly deal with foreign languages, computers, music, sports, and so on. However, is it good to have so many private schools and training schools? As a coin has two sides, so are the private schools and training schools concerning their advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, private schools and training schools can meet the special need of some people, and help them to improve themselves. On the other hand, they often bring the parents and family heavy economic burden because of their high fees, and put mental pressure on students because of the fierce competition. As for me, I will not choose a private school or training school just to go with the stream. First, it is not difficult for us college students to teach ourselves. Second, we should do something to lessen the burden of our family. Make reasonable choices when facing fashion.5.On College Students Occupying Seats1. On College Students Occupying Seats On campus, it is a common phenomenon for students to occupy seats. In the library, classrooms, and even the canteen, you can find books and pens claiming the temporary usage of the tables and seats. This issue has aroused public concern. Some people hold that it is wrong and impolite behavior which should be fought with. While others argue that students should not take the blame since colleges fail to provide sufficient teaching resources. There is probably some truth in both sides. As to me, I’m in favor of the former argument. For one thing, occupying seats inevitably worsens the problem ofresource shortage. The seats will remain empty until the occupiers come. For another, taking up seats does harm to the harmonious campus atmosphere when friendship and modesty give way to improper competition. Therefore, I strongly oppose this kind of act.。

答案:
The Best Way to Keep a Harmonious Relationship in the Dormitory
There is no doubt that it is very important to keep a harmonious relationship with our roommates since we spend most of the time in the dorms as college students. However, as to the best ways to form strong ties with our roommates, different people hold different views. Some insist on increased participation in the group activities. Still others argue for keeping no secrets between each other. In my opinion, enhancing communication is the best way to maintain a good relationship with our roommates.
My suggestion lies in the following two reasons. On the one hand, if we frequently exchange ideas we can know our roommates better in terms of their habits, merits, demerits and so on, so that we can avoid frictions and conflicts with them. For example, one of our roommates is a night owl and he may at least make no stir at bedtime if he doesn't change his habit of staying up late after we talked with him peacefully rather than quarreled with him. On the other hand, the more communication of thought, the more intimacy between the roommates there will be. By sharing happiness and sorrow we get closer to each other.
In a word, strengthening the communication between roommates conduces to a harmonious relationship. I believe that it is the soundest approach to keep us on intimate terms. Therefore, it is high time that we frequently exchange ideas with our roommates.

Dear Sherry,
I meant to return the bicycle that you lent me yesterday, but your roommate Rose told me that you went shopping. So I left the key with her. Thank you very much for your generous help. When you get the key, please ring me up.
Yours,
Sarah。
