Fill in the blanks with the proper wordsEveryone knows that the Internet has changed how business operate, governments function and people live. However, a new, less 67 technological trend is just as transformative: “big data”. Big data starts with the fact that there is a lot more information 68 around these days than ever before and it is being put to extraordinary new uses Consider language translation, for example. When IBM first started to work on machine translation in the 1990s,it just fed a small number of high- quality translation into a computer and programmed it to infer which word in one language is the best alternative for another. Although this 69 revolutionized the task of translation, the resultwas far from being perfect. Then,in 2006,Google burst in. Instead of millions of pages of texts, the search giant 70 billions, from corporate websites to documents in every language from the European Union. The result isthat its translations are much better than IBM's were and it covers 71 languages.Large amounts of 72I data defeated small amounts of cleaner data.Another good example of how big data can be 73 helpful is online shopping.Using data collected from customer shopping habits, today, Amazon can 74 who is most likely to purchase what and when.Details such as your history and wish list help the company gain a glimpse (一瞥) into your interests.Goods will then be dispatched to a logistics center(物流中心) near you and get packed before you even order, meaning that when you do make an online purchase same-day 75 would be possible. With big data, instead of trying to understand exactly why an engine breaks down or why a drug's side effect disappears, researchers can instead collect and analyze massive quantities of information about such events and everything that is associated with them, looking for pattern that might help predict future occurrences.Big data answers not why but what. Finally, it will mark the moment when the"information society"finally fulfills the promise implied by its name.Part Three Reading and WritingI. Read the passage and choose the best answer(A)Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours (绕行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words. For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement (限制) and have strong opinions about everything.Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired. But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They’d get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons (见识).We eventually arrived at my parents’ doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence. Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of a journey—and the best part of yourself.76. Sandwiches(C)Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: "Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, "The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. So our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see - and guide whether we see fear."To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear."We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear," Dr Garfinkel said."We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder."85. What is the finding of the study?A. One's heart affects how he feels fear.B. fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.C. fear has something to do with one's health.D. One’s fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.86. The study was carried out by analyzing ________.A. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible picturesB. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditionsC. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scansD. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication87. Which of the following is closest in meaning to "mechanism" in Paragraph 6?A. Order.B. System.C. Machine.D. Treatment.88. This study may be useful to ________.A. treating anxiety and stress betterB. explaining the cycle of fear and anxietyC. finding the sky to the heart-brain communicationD. understanding different fears in our hearts and headsII. Read the passage and answer questions. (5)You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella. The designer says he come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬)built into a street lamp.” he said. The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In add ition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360°motion sensor on the biberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enoughshelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.89.Belyacv created the lampbrella to_________.mpbrella is a lamp post with its own_________.91.from Belyacv’s words in Paragraph2, we know that his creation was inspired by an on street in Russian.92.The three important things that help Lampbrella works are a sensor monitor and_________93.Although been installed at off the ground, Lampbrella could still be a danger for the tallest pedestrian.III. Cloze (16)(A)Night after night, she came to say goodbye to me, even long after my childhood 94 . Following her usual custom, she'd lean down and 95 my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead.I don't remember when it first started annoying me-her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and rough against my young skin. Finally, one night, I cried out at her, "Don't do that anymore -your hands are rough!" She didn't say anything 96 . But never again did my mother 97 me with that familiar experience of her love. But due to my self-pride, I didn’t tell her I was 98 .Time after time, with the passing years, my missed my mother’s hands, missed her goodnight kiss upon my forehead. Sometimes the incident seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it appeared in the back of my mind. Now, I’m not a little girl anymore. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making f , seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and e to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.Diet products weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the counter instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food brands. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.77.From Paragraph 1, we can learn thatA.diet products can bring out people’s potentialB.people have difficulty in choosing diet productsC.diet products are misleading peopleD.people are fed up with diet products78.The purpose of writing this passage is .A.to warn people of the side effect of diet productsB.tell people how to lose weightC.to advise people to eat diet productsD.to introduce some diet products79.Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passage?CP: Central Point P: Point SP: Sub-point(次要点) C: ConclusionB.Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage 12%When we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones --- the kind of modern, solar-paneled masterpieces that make the covers of architecture magazines. But the US has more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be incredibly wasteful to tear them all down and replace them with greener versions. An enormous amount of energy and resources went into the construction of those houses. And it would take an average of 65 years for the 80 carbon emissions (排放) from a new energy-efficient ( 节能) home to make up for the 81 lost by destroying an old one.So in the broadest sense, the greenest home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, nearly half of US carbon emissions come from heating, cooling and powering our homes, offices and other buildings."You can't deal with climate 82 without dealing with existing buildings,"says Richard Moe, the president of the National Trust. With some exceptions, the oldest homes tend to be the least energy-efficient.Houses built before 1939 use about 50more energy per square foot than those built after 2000, mainly due to the tiny cracks and gaps that expand over time and let in more outside air.83 , there are a vast number of relatively simple changes that can green older homes, from 84 ones like Lincoln's Cottage to your own postwar home. And efficiency upgrades (升级) can save more than just the earth; they can help protect property owners from rising power 85 .80. When he walks around the firm's Ontario headquarters he shares his s e n s e o f hu m o r to bond(亲近,团结)with his staff. He says "It can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more effective at what they do." Humour can be used by teachers in the classroom too. It's a good way to b r e ak t h e i c e(打破沉默)with students and create a more relaxed atmosphere which is good for learning,as long as everyone doesn't spend all their time in h y s t e r i c s!(狂笑)But we have to be careful; not everyone laughs at the same things. While some of us may admire a work colleague or fellow student for their clever and well-told joke, others may consider them s a r c a s t i c,(讽刺的,挖苦的)o ff e n s i v e(讨厌的)or just an idiot!According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia's Wharton School, a worker or boss who successfully uses humor is seen as both confident and c o m p e t e n t(有能力的),which in turn increases his or her status? He says "Being funny is taking a risk, and being risky shows confidence." His study 'Risky Business: When Humour Increases and Decreases Status' also found that someone who tells i n a pp r op r i a t e(不合适的)jokes is also seen as confident but they're also regarded as incompetent. So telling the right jokes in the office or classroom can spread some happiness but if you still think working and studying is n o l a u g h i n g m a tt e r(严肃的事情),take note of a study published in The Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management in 2006, that found for healthcare workers, emotional exhaustion was significantly lower among those who experienced greater levels of fun at work. And other research has discovered that teams who share more jokes gave more s u ppo r t i v e andc o n s t r u c t i v e statements to each other–and that's no joke!94.How does Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada, try to get along with his employees?95.According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia's Wharton School, how doesa worker have to use humor if he or she is to appear confident and competent?96.True or false: A study found health workers got greater levels of emotional exhaustion when they had fun at work.97.Which word used in the article means ' respect and approve of someone or their behavior'?98.How competent is someone seen as when they tell inappropriate jokes?VII. Bob had just drawn up a “motherhood contract” —a document(文件)stating that for 70 days this summer he would take over the care and feeding of the couple’s four children, plus all household chores(杂务).Although he didn’t even know how to make coffee when he signed, he was quite confident.(He thought the experience would make a nice book.)After 40 of the 70 days, he was ready to give up.“I was beaten down, completely humbled,” admits Peters. Three weeks later he spoke to the local press (also part of the bargain), stating, “Not only is motherhood a difficult task, not only is it never-ending, it is an impossible job for any normal human being.”Bob and Pat were high school sweethearts. After they were married in1960, she worked as a secretary to help put him through university. Since then Bob has been the football and wrestling coach at Palo Alto’s Cubberley High while Pat raised the kids. Then two years ago Patwent back to work as a secretary at Cubberley.“I had been around children so much,” she sighs, “I couldn’t talk to a grown-up.”She continued to run the household, however-until Bob signed the contract, whereupon she decided to relax and enjoy it. Although Peters had consulted with his school’s home economics teachers and the head of the cafeteria, his meals were sometimes a disaster.“I tried to slip the butter I’d forgotten under the eggs after they were frying,” he says. For the last three weeks, the family ate out a lot-sometimes having Macdonald’s hamburgers for lunch and dinner. As for housekeeping, a home economics teacher had told Bob that a room always looks clean if the bed is made.“I found an easier way —I shut the doors,” he says. Soon the kids were wearing the same clothes for a week.“I made them wear their shirts inside out, and when we went to pick up Pat at work they turned them right side out so they would look clean.”Now that Bob has publicly admitted he was wrong, he is routinely sharing the child-raising and household tasks with Pat. The tentative(暂定的)title of his book about the summer is taken from something he shouted at the kids one day. 104.Where does Bob work?________________________________________________________________________________105.What should Bob do during 70days this summer?________________________________________________________________________________106.What does Pat do at Cubberley?________________________________________________________________________________107.What would Bob have to do if he failed to keep to the contract as it was agreed?________________________________________________________________________________108.Did Bob try to cook good meals for his children?________________________________________________________________________________ 109.How did Bob keep the room clean?________________________________________________________________________________ 110.How do you like the contract?
