AOne afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son's school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching (干呕) into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before. What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare (噩梦). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents,it can prove a disaster. Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building;or it's taking part, not winning, that's important;or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting—and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone's eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.21.What can we learn about the author's son from Paragraph 1?A.He talked with some mothers. B.He comforted his classmates.C.He had difficulty in sleeping. D.He suffered from stomachache.22.Sports day is still an annual event in this school probably because __________.A.this is an independent school B.it is a tradition of the schoolC.it helps children lose weight D.children enjoy watching sports23.What does the author think about team games?A.They should include more stressful races.B.They are acceptable to different children.C.They should be abandoned at primary schools.D.They are less fun for those who love running.24.What is the author's attitude towards sports day?A.Critical. B.Neutral.C.Positive. D.Ambiguous.BMOOCs, short f or “massive open online courses,” mark an important, possibly revolutionary, development in education. These courses are on line, free of charge, and open to anyone in the world who has a laptop and an Internet connection. Moreover, they are mainly offered by great universities like Stanford, Berkeley, Harvard and Columbia. The courses are arranged according to how difficult they are, enabling students to progress from beginners to the advanced. The courses cover not only a broad range of science subjects such as math and computer science, but also courses in social sciences and humanities. Though MOOCs are not offered for credit and degree, many students enroll(加入) in the courses for real skills or knowledge which they can put to some practical use.The format(形式) seems better than the traditional school class. The average quality of the lecturers is much higher. Besides, students can learn back and forward—that is, they can go at their own learning speed, which they can't do in a live lecture. And, more importantly, they don't have to travel anywhere to attend an online lecture. There is a problem of asking questions of the lecturer in a class of ten thousand students, but some MOOCs have solved it by allowing students to post questions on line for a vote, and only the most popular questions are put to the lecturer. In a knowledge age, lifelong learning is not confined to a traditional classroom. Students taking MOOCS are usually very clever, have work experience, and in many cases, have already developed a set of practical skills. Moreover, they also offer unique international perspectives(远景) that would be the envy of any school classroom.25.Which of the following statements is NOT true about MOOCs?A.The word “MOOCs” is short for “massive open online campuses”.B.Anyone who has a computer and an Internet connection can take MOOCs.C.MOOCs are usually offered by first-class universities in the world.D.MOOCs may be a breakthrough in the development of education.26.MOOCs seem to have an advantage over traditional school classes in that ________.A.there is a problem of asking questions in traditional classesB.students enrolling in MOOCs can get credit and degree easilyC.students can learn at their own study paceD.students can travel to many places when taking MOOCs27.The meaning of the underlined word “confined” means ________.A.extended B.developedC.limited D.advancedCPassenger pigeons (旅鸽)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours. It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an everlasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans' need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.28. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons________.A. were the biggest bird in the worldB. lived mainly in the south of AmericaC. did great harm to the natural environmentD. were the largest bird population in the US29. The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons'________.A. escapeB. ruinC. liberationD. evolution30. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?A. To seek pleasure.B. To save other birds.C. To make money.D. To protect crops.31. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?A. It was ignored by the public.B. It was declared too late.C. It was unfair.D. It was strict.DWhen different species of birds flock(聚集) together, their flight formations are determined by social dynamics both between and within species.New research from the Universities of Cambridge and Exeter reveals for the first time that, contrary to current models used to explain the movement of flocks, the differences between bird species and social relationships between individuals play a critical role in determining the dynamics of mixed-species flocks. The unified(群集) behaviour of bird flocks has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years. One naturalist from the turn of the century even suggested telepathy(心灵感应) may be involved. There have since been more logical explanations, including mathematical models that show that repeated interactions among individuals following simple rules can generate coordinated(协同的) group movements. However, these models usually rely on the assumption that individuals within groups are identical and interact independently, which may not reflect reality.Jolle Jolles, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge's Department of Zoology and author of the paper, said:“Spectacular collective behaviour can be found in a large range of animal species, and we now know that often these complex coordinated group movements may be the result of individuals following simple rules. However, rarely are the individual characteristics and social relationships within them taken into account. Our research highlights that these striking displays of group behaviour are much more complex.”By analysing high-resolution photographs of mixed flocks of rooks and jackdaws(both from the corvid family), the researchers found that rather than individuals interacting in a consistent fashion throughout the flock, interactions depended on social dynamics between the different species as well as relationships within a species. The researchers discovered that birds prefer to fly close to members of their own species, and that the larger and more dominant rooks take the lead by flying near the front of flocks. Additionally, the lifelong, monogamous(一妻一夫制的) pair bonds that are characteristic of both species seem to be reflected in flight, as birds often fly particularly close to a single, same species partner.Dr Alex Thornton, principal investigator of the Cambridge Jackdaw Project, now at the University of Exeter and author of the paper, said “Together, our findings demonstrate that to understand the structure of groups, such as bird flocks,we need to consider the characteristics and relationships of the individuals within them.”32. The underlined word “generate” means ________.A.set down B.take awayC.bring about D.give up33.According to Jolle Jolles, what are seldom considered about coordinated group movement?A.Individual characteristics and social relationship between them.B.Repeated interactions among individuals and social dynamics.C.Telepathy and social relationship between them.D.The structure of groups and the varieties of species.34.Birds may prefer to fly the closest to ________.A.the largest one B.the most dynamic oneC.the lifelong partner D.the friendly partner35.What is the main idea of the passage?A.How birds interact in simple rules.B.How birds of different feathers flock together.C.Why birds show preference to flocking.D.Why birds display the characteristics.

1. It's wonderful to go to another country, complete a volunteer project and feel that you really have a positive influence. But how can you become an international volunteer?*Plan practically.Contact(联系) the organization a few months before leaving and find out if there are materials which are rare and hard to get for the project. What you often consider plentiful here, such as nails or hammers, is in great need in other parts of the world. *Do the project together, not on your own.You are a guest in the community(社区).The most successful result is not that you build something and walk away, but that you and community build something as a team.Share skills and build together.*Be flexible. Not everything is going to happen as planned.Often the other country doesn't have the right tools, manpower, transportation or funds to get all the needed work done.In a word, they lack infrastructure(基础设施).*Contact the people in the community.Often you will have"________ outside the range ofthe project.Rather than move back to the group with whom you traveled, be sure to spend time with the people of the community.Listen to the things about their lives. If you can't speak the language, smiles work wonders. And you will be surprised﹣you will find a wayto community.Volunteering is a special and life﹣long experience for everyone involved(参与的).Be prepared that the person who may be changed most is you. It's a joyful, often careful experience which will encourage you to view yourself, your neighbors and your world quite differently.(1)To become a good volunteer in another country, you need to________.A stick to your original plan.B speak the language fluently.C get well preparedin advance. D bring along nails or hammers.(2)Which might be the most successful result when you do the project?________A Donating books to the community library.B Spending some time chatting with the people.C Building a school for the children before leaving.D Making practical tools with the community members.(3)The underlined word"downtime"in Paragraph 5probably refers to________.A the welfare when you travel.B the sadness when you are alone.C the period when you are not working.D the feeling when you become tired out.(4)What is the text mainly about?________A Places in great need of volunteers.B Ways to cooperate with localpeople. C Reasons for the popularity of volunteering. D Tips on becoming an international volunteer.2. If doctors want to test you for something, they'll usually take a blood or urine sample(尿样).But wouldn't it be much more convenient if they just asked you to breathe througha special instrument? In fact, your breath can say a lot about you.In traditional Chinese medicine, doctors draw a conclusion about the health state of a patient based on the smell of his or herbreath; trained dogs and rats can identify the smells of the breaths of people suffering from certain cancers; traffic police also monitor drivers'alcohol consumption by testing their breaths.Just like blood and urine, your breath contains lots of"metabolites"﹣the waste chemicals that the body produces, which vary from person to person. They are like personal health fingerprints, which is why scientists sometimes call them"breathprints", according to Science Daily.Compared to blood or urine testing, breath testing takes only seconds instead of hours, and it requires neither a needle nor a container to hold the body fluids(液).This means thetest can be taken frequently to better detect early signs of diseases and monitor the progress of a medical treatment. On the other hand, as an identifier, you might think that breaths are not as reliable as fingerprints since they might change based on what you eat. However, researchers in Zurich, Switzerland mapped 11healthy volunteers'chemical patterns by having them breathe through a special instrument, and they found that each pattern was unique and the patterns didn't change much throughout the day, reported BBC."Our goal is to develop breath analysis to the point where it becomes competitive with the established(早已确立的)analysis of blood and urine, "said Malcolm Kohler, professor atthe University Hospital Zurich.(1)According to the text we know that________.A breath varies from person to person based on food.B your breath may give you away if you are not careful.C doctors can test one's breath to find about his illness.D trained dogs can identify people with certain cancers.(2)In comparison with blood or urine testing, breath testing is________.A comfortable and convincing.B traditional and reliable.C accurate and competitive.D quick and convenient.(3)What is the author's attitude toward breath testing?________A Doubtful.B Approving.C Unconcerned.D Worried.(4)What can we infer from the text?________A Breath testing is reliable and may have a bright future.B Blood or urine testing will be less used in medical treatment.C Doctors have found the best way to detect early signs of diseases.D Traditional Chinese medicine is becoming more and more popular.3. How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments﹣mostly for entertainment purposes﹣is fair and respectful?Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain"collections"of interesting"things"rather than protective habitats(栖息地).Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their naturalhomes.Zoos claim(声称) to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals'naturalbehavior, intelligence, or beauty.Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species'name, diet, and natural range. The animals'normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don't usually take care of the animals'natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually self﹣destructive behavior called zoochosis.A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages.Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered.Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species(物种) has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild.Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out.In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers.Haven't we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons why people kill them.Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals'natural habitats.(1)What does the author think of the zoos?________A They love to collect interesting things.B They are not worthy of the public support.C They do not treat animals as human beings.D They teach people to save endangered animals.(2)The author develops his opinion mainly by________.A using evidence he has collected at zoos.B pointing out the wrong doings of the zoos.C questioning the way animals are protected.D discussing the advantages of natural habitats.(3)Though arguing against zoos, the author has to admit that________.A zoos have to keep animals in small cages.B most animals in zoos are endangered species.C some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos.D it's acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats.4. There has been much debate since Titanic became one of the most successful films of all time: Did Rose leave Jack to die by not letting him up on the makeshift(临时替代的)lifeboat as they floated in the ocean?A U.S.television show, the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters recreated the dangerous conditions after the Titanic sank in 1912, and through a chain of hypothermia(体温过低)tests, has discovered Leonardo DiCaprio's character would have survived the disaster had he lifted himself onto the board from which Rose, played by Kate Winslet, was rescued. As fans of the film remember, Jack remains in the freezing water while Rose lies on afloating piece of the destroyed ship as he doesn't want it turned over.In the Oscar﹣winning film, Jack dies from hypothermia while Rose is rescued.Titanic director James Cameron told Mythbusters he believed the board wouldn't have supported both Jack and Rose. But the team found if Rose had taken off her life jacket and put it under the board it would have given them enough ________ to keep both of them floating. In the film Rose was one of the last to be rescued.Historical documents show that the Officer Harold Lowe, who was made to rescue Rose, looked for survivors for 45minutes.In a separate test the team found that had Jack remained in the freezing water for over an hour he would have died from hypothermia.Cameron, however, had the last word telling the TV show that Jack had to die as that's what the plot called for.He said, "I think you're missing the point here. The plot says Jack died.He has to die.So maybe we should have made the board a tiny bit smaller, but he's still going down."(1)The U.S.TV show did tests on Jack's death________.A after creating a difficult condition.B by tying Rose's life jacket to theboat. C after talking to the US director James Cameron. D by testing how long one can hold out in cold water.(2)What does the underlined word"buoyancy"in Paragraph 5 probably mean?________A Force.B Warmth.C Softness.D Space.(3)Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?________A Rose was the last one to be rescued.B Finally Cameron agreed with theteam. C Cameron thought the board was hard enough. D Kate Winslet's character died from hypothermia.(4)What would be the best title for the text?________A Jack's Death for Nothing.B A TV Show's Similar Tests.C Cameron's Unreasonable Argument.D Jack's Deep Love with Kate Winslet.第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.5. 【英语】辽宁省朝阳市三校协作体2015高三一模考试
辽宁省朝阳市三校协作体2015届高三一模考试英语试卷一、阅读理解(共4小题)1. When Armida Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care. Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence. “This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said. “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They li ve in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say, ‘My God. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Have you ever noticed that the more you have the more you want? Let’s face it.Thinking our life is good enough doesn’t come naturally to many people. When we have high expectations of everything in life we will run into disappointment.Only when we are aware that needs are different from desires can we live with satisfaction. Here are a few ideas to help you be happier with what you have and who you are.Focus on what you are thankful for. Most people want things to be better than they are, or when things are going well, we forget to appreciate what we have.Learn to reflect on how much better things are than they could be.Focus on what you are thankful for.Write down 5 things you are grateful for right now. When we hold onto regrets from decisions we have made, it can really poison our well-being.Many people regret something they can no longer change, which ends up holdingthem back from moving forward in a more positive manner. What happened in the past is done and gone, so work to stay present and be mindful of the current moment to find more joy and fulfillment. When we use other people as the measuring stick for our personal success and quality of life we are likely to be less satisfied.Social comparisons can provide useful information when we try to learn from others, but they also hold our perspective in a discontented position.Compare yourself less with others so you can be satisfied more. When you are focused on your big ambitions and future goals you might elide the daily pleasures that surround you.Learn to slow down and absorb the wonder and beauty around you.Stay present and focus on the task you’re undertaking at the moment.Don’t let the life pass you by b ecause you’re always on the go and distracted by ambition.Practice looking at life through the lens of contentment and it will become more natural.1.How can we live with contentment?A.To change our lifestyle.B.To have a motivation in life.C.To give less attention to what we are grateful for.D.To realize the difference between needs and desires.2.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?A.Make wise decisionsB.Know the present situationC.Let go of regretsD.Remember the past3.The under lined word “elide”(in Paragraph 5) probably means “______”.A.enjoy B.change C.create D.neglect4.What should you do to put yourself in a good mood?A.Make time for simple pleasures.B.Learn from successful people.C.Focus on your future goals.D.Create chance to learn more.二、信息匹配(共1小题)5. Mary is digging in the ground for a photo, when along comes John.Seeing that there is no one in sight, John starts to scream.John’s angry mother rushes over and drives Mary away.Once his mum has gone, J ohn helps himself to Mary’s potato. We’ve all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young—the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit him.But Mary and John are not humans. They’re African ba boons(狒狒).___1___John’s scream and his mother’s attack on Mary could have been a matter of chance, but John was later seen playing the same tricks on others.___2___Studying behavior like this is complicated but scientists discovered apes(猿) clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew when they themselves had been cheated.___3___ An ape was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interesting. When she found nothing, she “walked back, hit me over the he ad with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day.”Another way to decide whether an animal’s behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animal.A zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy.“He slowly stole up behind the other ape, walking on tiptoe. When he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors.” Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe.____4___ But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple copying. It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies.____5___ Studying the intelligence of our closest relative could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence.A.In most cas es the animal probably doesn’t know it is cheating.B.An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania.C.And playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior.D.So the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery.E.The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use of toolsF.This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly usedby baboons.G.Of course it’s possible that it could have learnt from humans that such behavior works, without understanding why.三、完形填空(共1小题)6. 2014-2015学年辽宁省抚顺市重点高中协作校高二(下)期末英语试卷第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共4小题;每小题8分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.1. My son David, who was 3.5years old, taught me a beautiful lesson today. After we finish ed playing with the beads (珠子), David slowly picked up each bead, looking at it as if it were made of chocolate and then put it into the box they were stored in.With over a hundred beads to go, I was getting impat ient."Why could he not pick up 10in one go and put them in? My morning was going to be r uined today!"But then it hit me like a brick.I noticed that he did this with as much interest a s he had while we were playing. The boy was enjoying the whole process. For him the fun was in the game itself as well as in the process of properly packing up and cleaning up.It wa s not just about his turn or the fun part.Every bit was as fun as the other.I thought of myself as a kid when we would go out to play cricket (板球).If I was not batting or bowling (击球或掷球), I was unhappy as I impatiently waited for my turn to do so.As a result, I was unhappy while waiting for my turn and only happy for the few moments I either batted or bowled.O nly the process of doing something I combined with happiness made me cheerful. The restof the time I was waiting for my run in the future or recalling great bowling from the past.Looking at how peacefully my son was putting beads into the box taught me that the proce ss is the goal. The joy of journey is not in getting there but in every step of it.(1)Why was the father getting upset?________A He wasn't interested in the game.B His son didn't do it as he was told to.C It'd take long to put away the beads.D David put away the beads casually.(2)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2mean?________A I was hit by David with a brick.B I felt very annoyed at what David did.C I was at a loss what to do with David.D I suddenly understood David's behavior.(3)We can learn from the text that the author________.A felt satisfied with his teammates.B happily watched his teammates play.C was eager to join in the game.D thought it a pleasure to win a match.(4)What did the author learn from this experience?________A Happiness resulted from doing something pleasant.B The process was more import ant than the result.C It was important for children to develop good habits.D What children thought was different from that of adults.2. Many of us dream of having thousands and thousands of dollar to spend on what we desi re.We can buy lottery tickets, enter contests or spend hours building a business or invest inthe stock market. We are sure that when we have plenty of money, we will be happy. While having some money does have an impact on our level of happiness, having a lot of m oney does not.It is reported that Americans whose income goes from 20, 000a year to50, 0 00 a year are more likely to be happy. But beyond $50, 000, happiness does not increase as salaries go up.It is because we are never satisfied.Catherine Sanderson, a psychology prof essor at Amherst College says, "We always think if we just had a little more money, we'd be h appier. But when we get there, we are not."Daniel Gilbert, a psychology professor at Harvard notes, "The more you make, the more youwant. The more you have, the less it brings you joy.We incorrectly assume we'Il get more pleasure from more, and we don't."The things money can buy don't make you happy either.A lot of research suggests that yo uwon't find the"good life"buying expensive"toys".You finally buy that BMW you've alwayswanted and it soon loses its appeal. Then, instead of wondering if a new car is what really makes you happy, you decide you just need a different new car.It is an endless cycle. To really be happy, you need to understand what makes you happy in the first place. One s ecret of happiness is people.Surveys have found that people need people. Those who have five or more close friends are 50% more likely to describe themselves as"very happy".Good relationships have a far greater effect on happiness than larger salary.Andrew Oswald, an economist at England's University of Warwick says, "If you are looking for happiness in life, f ind the right husband or wife rather than trying to double your salary."So invest your time and energy in people. The reward is much bigger in terms of happines s!(1)In Paragraph 1the author intends to tell us the"belief"that________A we are unhappy because we often lack money.B people can buy what they want if th ey have enough money.C more money will make one's dreams come true.D hap piness will result from more money.(2)Which of the following statements would the author agree to?________A Having some money brings happiness to some degree.B The more money one earns, the sadder one becomes.C Buying expensive things will surely bring pleasure.D We get nothing from buying expensive things we want.(3)Why does happiness not increase with pay rises?________A Most of us have a psychological problem.B People are not content with what they ge t.C It is human nature to be unhappy.D Happiness has nothing to do with money.(4)In order to find happiness we should________A always make new friendsB. C focus on good relationships D.3. Chinese Dinner TableOf course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that's only superficial.Besides, in decent restaurants, you can always ask for a pa ir of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is thatin the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the hos t thinks you're in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes. The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main c ourses of hot meat and vegetable dishes.Soup then will be served (unless in Guangdong st yle restaurants) to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings. If y ou wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.Perhaps one of the things that surprise a western visitor most is that some of the Chinese h osts like to put food into the plates of their guests. In formal dinners, there are always"publi c"chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks.Thi s is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food.If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate.People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. When you have had enough, just say so.Or you will always overeat!(1)The real difference on dinner table between China and West is that________.A You're treated to a formal dinner for the first time.B On Chinese dinner table, chopsticks replace knife and fork.C The host will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes. D You have your own plate of food in West while in China ev eryone shares the dishes.(2)If you have a dinner in a Chinese home,in which order will the food be served?________A badc.B cabd.C bdac.D cdab.(3)The"public chopsticks and spoons"are used to________.A taste different dishes.B consume the food in the plate.C show the friendship a nd politeness.D put food into the plates of their guests.(4)According to the message, the author's attitude towards Chinese dinner table is________A criticalB. 第I卷第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)(略)第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
The underlined word “generate” means ________.A.set down B.take awayC.bring about D.give up33.According to Jolle Jolles, what are seldom considered about coordinated group movement?A.Individual characteristics and social relationship between them.B.Repeated interactions among individuals and social dynamics.C.Telepathy and social relationship between them.D.The structure of groups and the varieties of species.34.Birds may prefer to fly the closest to ________.A.the largest one B.the most dynamic oneC.the lifelong partner D.the friendly partner35.What is the main idea of the passage?A.How birds interact in simple rules.B.How birds of different feathers flock together.C.Why birds show preference to flocking.D.Why birds display the characteristics.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

AAn artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an active railroad. On a recent day, Mr. Kloehn stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men hug. Inside his little shelter Mr. Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr. Kloehn also visits Sweet-Pea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings. In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roofmaterial. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device to the house. The device is powered by the sun. Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.Mr. Kloehn says his work is not a social project. Dogs are usually not relaxed in a labenvironment, but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to sit still even in an MRI scanner. That’s how researchers in Hungary’s ELTE University were able to get images of their brains at work.Research fellow Attila Andics says it helped them better understand the dogs’ relationship with humans. “We have known for a long time that dogs and humans share similar social environment, but now our results show that dogs and humans also have similar brain mechanisms(大脑机制)to process social information,”said Andics. After training 11 dogs to stay motionless while their brains were scanned, the researchers checked their neurological(神经系统的)responses to about 200 emotionally significant sounds, from whining and crying to playful barking and laughing. They then compared the responses from human subjects. They found striking similarities.Andics says it opens new possibilities for research. “It establishes a foundation of a new branch of comparative neuroscience, because until now it was not possible to measure the brain activities of a non-primate(非人灵长类动物)and the primate brain in a single experiment,” said Andics. And what that tells ordinary dog owners, the Hungarian scientists say, is to treat your canine companions as friends, not mere animals, because they evidently understand human feelings.25. Users of social-networking sites have on average 121 online friends as compared with physical ones. The study also claims that people tend to be more open, confident and honest with their virtual friends than their “real” ones.“For most people , the Internet is a way of keeping in touch with loved ones and friends, but for people who are isolated(隔离的)due to illness, it plays a more vital role, and can often act as a lifeline.”says Helen Oxley, a psychologist at Wythenshawe h ospital.“People with illnesses often rely on the Internet to facilitate(促进)friendships, since they blog and use networking sites as a way of dealing with their illness. It can foster(培养)a sense of social connection for those who frequently feel isolated, which is important to psychological well-being.”In wider society, the ways in which friendships are formed are changing, with people recognizing that they can develop deep and meaningful connections with others that they’ve never met, and may never meet. About one in 10 people has either met their best friends online, or believes they can make lifelong friends on the Web.The findings highlight how social introductions are also changing. Only five percent would ask for someone’s phone number, while 23 percent are now likely to ask for an email address or a full name with the intention of adding the person to their social network. At the same time, however, a questionnaire completed by 4,427 suggests that 20 percent of parents believe their children’s education is affected by surfing the Net. They think their children are doing poorly at the school due to the amount of time they spend on non-educational websites.32. The underlined word “it” in Para 1 most probably refers to ________.A. people spending too much time surfing the NetB. people having more virtual friends than real onesC. people relying on the Internet to connect with friendsD. people making meaningful connections with strangers33. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an active railroad. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings. In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. Dogs are usually not relaxed in a lab environment, but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to si t still even in an MRI scanner. It can foster(培养) a sense of social connection for those who frequently feel isolated, which is important to psychological well-being.”In wider society, the ways in which friendships are formed are changing, with people recognizing that they can develop deep and meaningful connections with others that they’ve never met, and may never meet. The thrower‘s lack of distance was a blessing. Had he gathered tips from the competitors of the hammer throw(链球) competition, which was taking place in the infield at the same time as the 100 final, the bottle could have hit one of the competitors. It ended up landing a few feet from Blake (lane5).Edith Bosch, a female Dutch judoka who won a bronze medal earlier during the Olympics, claimed that the man who threw the bottle was sitting near her and that she ―beat‖ him. Whether that‘s true or the hyperbole (夸张的语句) of an aggravated athlete was unclear in the minutes after the incident. Pictures show a group of Dutch athletes sitting behind the starting area.Police took the man into custody(监护). He will appear in court on Monday morning.Neither Bolt nor Blake said they knew of the incident until they were informed by reporters. ―I don‘t know who would have done that,‖ Bolt said.Gatlin was aware of it but implied it was only a slight distraction. ―I didn‘t knowwhat it was,‖ he said, according to the BBC, ―but when you‘re in tho se blocks, the whole stadium is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop.‖1.How many exact athletes are mentioned in the text?A. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Program, reports that the average surface temperature of the earth has increased during the twentieth century by 0.6°+ 0.2°C.(The + 0.2°C means that the increase might be as small as 0.4°C or as great as 0.8°C). This may seem like a small shift, but although regional and short—term temperatures do fluctuate(变动) over a wide range, global temperatures are generally quite stable. In fact, the difference between today‘saverage global temperature and the average global temperature during the last Ice Age is only about 5 degrees C. Indeed, it‘s warmer today around the world than at any time during the past 1,000years, and the warmest years of the previous century have occurred within the past decade. We also know that human activities—primarily the burning of fossil fuels—have increased the greenhouse gas content of the earth‘s atmosphere significantly over the same period. Carbon dioxide is one of the most important greenhouse gases, which trap heat near the planet‘s surface. The vast majority of climate researchers agree with these overall findings. The scientific disagreements that do still exist primarily concern detailed aspects of the processes that make up these largely accepted general themes. You can think of this website as a window into the world of scientific research. In this primer, you‘ll find a general discussion of the physical processes underlying the earth‘s climate, an outline of the kinds of data that may shed light on how the climate is changing—and the role of human activity in these changes—and a description a some of the questions and uncertainties that researchers continue to explore. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.‖Medical Daily notes that the details detected in the study include a person‘s general age, sex, income, political affiliation(派别), and other personality characteristics, including someone‘s emotional stability.Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color, and condition of someone‘s shoes. In the study, 63 University of Kansas students looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study‘s participants. V olunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, some of the results were expected: People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by extroverts(外向者).However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, ―practical and functional‖shoes were generally worn by more ―agreeable‖people, while ankle boots went more closely with ―aggressive‖ personalities. The strangers of all may be that those who wore ―uncomfortable looking‖ shoes tend to have ―calm‖ personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take exceptional care of them, you may suffer from ―attachment anxiety‖, spending a large amount of time worrying about what other people think of your appearance. There was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal types wearing ―shabbier and less expensive‖ shoes. The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality characteristics, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were showing deep awareness into their personalities.(10)According to Omri Gillath, a stranger‘s personality can be judged by ___.A.the age and sex of the personB.the personality questionnaire by the personC.the emotional stability of the personD.the shoes the person wears(11)We can infer from Paragraph 2 that ___.A.a practical purpose is to wear shoesB.people want to buy new shoes they pay attention toC.shoes are vital to their wearersD.the Journal of Research in Personality is a magazine(12)The underlined word ―agreeable‖ is closest in meaning to __.A. gentleB. weakC. generousD. considerate15. 2014-2015学年沈阳市郊联体高三第二次模拟考试英语试卷卷I(共三部分,115分)第一部分:听力(略)第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AThe Great Barn AdventureOne morning when I was 11, I explored the town‟s abandoned round gr ain barn(谷仓).I found a chained sliding door that was wide enough for me to pass through.Inside, there was a heavy smell of dead mice in the dark. After my eyes adjusted, I noticed a shaft (竖井) that rose all the way to the top of the barn. On one side was a one-man elevator with a long rope and roller.I stepped onto the platform and gave the rope a drag and the elevator began sliding up the shaft, but stopped halfway. After a brief panic attack, I noticed holes in the wall at regular intervals, forming a ladder. For reasons known only to an 11-year-old, I decided it would be better to go up than down. So, with shaking hands, I began climbing the wall. After what seemed like forever, I reached the top of the shaft. I stood up, dusted myself off and found absolutely nothing of interest. It was just an empty room with a ladder leading up to the roof. I climbed all the way up here for this? Then I noticed a fire extinguisher(灭火器),which I‟d always wanted to shoot off. So this was the chance of a lifetime. I tried it, and, much to my surprise, the thing worked! It shot out a thick cloud of powder that instantly filled the room. I couldn‟t breathe. I was going to choke to death, and they‟d probably never even find my body.Luckily, I remembered the ladder to the roof. I climbed up, popped the straw roof and saw a bright blue sky.I suddenly realized the dust and powder pouring out of the top could draw attention. So when the dust had settled, I climbed down and slipped out of the chain ed door. I‟m not sure if I was more excited about being alive or about not being caught, but I ran all the way back home. 【文章解读】本文主要介绍了作者小时候在家乡谷仓的冒险经历。

Nowadays, people in many big cities are complaining about the heavy traffic. It has seriously influenced people’s daily life and economic development. To solve the problem, I’d like to put forward some pieces of advice. For one thing, more streets and roads should be built. In this way, we can speed up the flow of buses and cars. For another, the number of bikes and cars can be limited, which can decrease the traffic flow. But the most important thing is that the number of private cars should be put under control. Meanwhile, buses should have their own special routes which cannot be used by other vehicles. Besides, underground train and city train should be developed quickly.I do hope my suggestions will be taken.Yours,Li Hua听力原文(Text 1)W: Are you getting to Saratoga by bus or by train?M: I don’t know yet. I need to get a part-time job to pay my school tuition fee. Now why don’t you sit right down here, and I’ll go get dinner and put it on the table.(Text 10)Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don’t look at the sky. Don’t look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rain fall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rain fall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the rings are close together, the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is not only important for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand—no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why? A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings that had grown there. He decided that people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after they destroyed the trees, they had to move.。

Last Friday a storm hit two villages destroying fourteen houses. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows. One person was killed, and nine were badly injured and taken to hospital. A number of other people received small injuries. Altogether over two hundred were left homeless as a result of the storm.A farmer said the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. He was in the kitchen with his wife and his children when they heard a loud noise. A few minutes later their house fell down on top of them. They managed to climb out, but then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe but very frightened.A woman said that her husband had just left for work when she noticed that her house was shaking. She rushed outside immediately with her children. There was no time for her to take anything. A few minutes later, the roof came down. Soldiers went to the area to help the people in trouble.。
