大学英语阅读理解练习题-Passageone
大学英语阅读理解练习题Passage oneEarly one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.1.According to the passage, Elias Howe was________.A. the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleepB. much more hard-working than other inventorsC. the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked2.The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.A. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needleB. how to design a needle which would not breakC. where to put the needle3.Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.A. he also tried to invent a sewing machineB. he got some of his ideas from dreamsC. he was one of Howe’s best friends4.Dreams are sometimes called“secret messages to ourselves” because___.A. strange images are used to communicate ideasB. images which have no meaning are usedC. we can never understand the real meaningPassage twoThe greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live afurther twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recentlybe gun to have its full effect on women’ s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age ,and though women tend to marry younger ,more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more after wads, return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.5.We are told that in an average family about 1990________.A. many children died before they were fiveB. the youngest child would be fifteenC. seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD. four or five children died when they were five6. When she was over fifty, the late 19th century mother________.A. would expect to work until she dieB. was usually expected to take up paid employmentC. would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentD. was unlikely to find a job even if she is now likely7. Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.A. marry so that they can get a jobB. leave school as soon as they canC. give up their jobs for good after they are marriedD. continue working until they are going to have a baby8. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. marry while still at schoolPassage threeSwimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous. To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn, as soon as possible, these four basic strokes; butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training. In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:1. Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself , with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble.2. Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach, Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good.Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.3. Don't smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it.4. Work at any activity that builds muscles.9. Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.A. they can talkB. they start walkingC. they have no fear of the waterD. they are five or six years old10. The author believes that fear of water is_____.A. stupidB. sensibleC. dangerousD. not smart11. The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____.A. Picture (1)B. Picture (2)C. Picture (3)D. Picture (4)12. According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____.A. the water is too coldB. your parents would not be happyC. something in the water might attackD. you might drownPassage fourAmericans spend their free time in various ways.America is a country of sports—of hunting, fishing and swimming, and of team sports like baseball and football. Millions of Americans watch their favorite sports on television. They also like to play in community orchestras(管弦乐队),make their own films or recordings, go camping ,visit museums, attend lectures, travel, garden, read, and join in hundreds of other activities. The people also enjoy building things for their homes, sewing their own clothes, even making their own photographs. They do these things for fun as well as for economy. But as much as Americans enjoy their free time, the country is at the same time a"self-improvement" country. More than 25 million adults continue their education, chiefly by going to school in the evening, during their own free time, at their own expense. Added to the time spent on personal activities, Americans a1so devote a great amount of their time to the varied needs of their communities. Many hospitals, schools, libraries, museums, parks, community centers, and organizations that assist the poor depend on the many hours citizens devote to these activities, often without any pay. Why do they do it?There are several answers. The idea of cooperating and sharing responsibility with one another for the benefit of all is as old as the country itself. When the country was first founded in 1776,it was necessary for the settlers to work together to live. They had crossed dangerous seas and risked all they had in their struggle for political and religious freedom. There remains among many Americans a distrust of central government. People still prefer to do things themselves within their communities, rather than give the government more control.Sometimes people offer their time because they wish to accomplish something for which no money is paid, to do something that will be of benefit to the entire community. It is true that some people use their leisure because they are truly interested in the work; or they are learning from the experience. No matter what the reason is, hundreds of thousands of so called leisure hours are put into hard, unpaid work on one or another community need.13. This passage is mainly about ________ . A. why America is a country of sportsB. how Americans spend their free timeC. why America is a "self-improvement" country14. The writer mentions the foundation of the country in order to indicate ________.A. the early history of AmericaB. the American people's determination to liveC. the reason for Americans' willingness to cooperate and share responsibility15.Which of the following best explains the meaning of the underlined word “leis ure" A. work time B. energy C. spare time16.What can we infer from the textA. The first settlers left their hometown for political and religious reasons.B. Many Americans do n′t trust the central government.C. American people enjoy building things for their homes just for fun.Passage fivePersonal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time. Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool. The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun see a great movie perhaps-and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story. With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.E-mail is also an inexpensive way stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.17.The purpose of this passage is to ________.18.A. explain how to use the InternetB. describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technologyC. tell the merits(价值) and usefulness of the InternetD. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet18. The use of E-mail has made it possible for the writer to ________.A. spend less time workingB. have more free time with his childC. work at home on weekendsD. work at a speed comfortable to him19. According to the writer, E-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one ________.A. reach a group of people at one time convenientlyB. keep one’s communication as personal as possibleC. pass on much more information than the laterD. get in touc h with one’s friends faster than the later20.The best title for this passage is ________.21.A. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.1..According to the passage, Elias Howe was________.A. the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleepB. much more hard-working than other inventorsC. the first person to design a sewing machine that really workedD. the only person at the time who knew the value of dreams2.The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.A. what kind of thread to useB. how to design a needle which would not breakC. where to put the needleD. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle3.Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.A. he also tried to invent a sewing machineB. he got some of his ideas from dreamsC. he was one of Howe’s best friendsD. he also had difficulty in falling asleep4.Dreams are sometimes called“secret messages to ourselves” because ________.A. strange images are used to communicate ideasB. images which have no meaning are usedC. we can never understand the real meaningD. only specially trained people can understand themBLanguage learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners .Most children will“obey”spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child .Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate ,they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(模仿)leads on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds .5.Before children start speaking________.A.they need equal amount of listeningB.they need different amounts of listeningC.they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructionsD.they can’t understand and obey the adult’s oral instructions6.Children who start speaking late ________.A.may have problems with their listeningB.probably do not hear enough language spoken around themually pay close attention to what they hearD.often take a long time in learning to listen properly7.A baby’s first noises are ________.A.an expression of his moods and feelingsB.an early form of languageC.a sign that he means to tell you somethingD.an imitation of the speech of adults8.The problem of deciding at what point a baby’s imitations can be considered as speech________.A.is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB.is not especially important because the changeover takes place graduallyC.is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageD.is one that should be completely ignored(忽略)because children’s use of words is often meaningless9.The speaker implies________.A.parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB.children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakC.children who are good at imitating learn new words more quicklyD.even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitatingCThe greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer-Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius’Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words“Post Office” instead of“Post Paid” on the several hundred stamps that he printed.Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. In Professor Weinstein’s class, I could hear the tumbrels rolling through the streets of Paris during the French Revolution. And going back further, I can still recall things about the stars that I should have long ago forgotten if not for my second-grade teacher, Miss Scorchiotti. To me, a great teacher is one who performs a subject in a way that makes it come alive.A great boss does the same. They turn the day-to-day uninteresting jobs into a learning experience. They convince you that you and what you are doing actually matter. They give you confidence, which makes you more willing to ask a question, or assume responsibility, or even suggest a change in some age-old company process. In short, a great boss knows how to teach. So my advice to anyone bound for the job market in the coming years and to anyone looking for a different work experience is: Don’t interview for the right job. Interview for the right boss. Not a best person, but someone who is willing and able to help you grow professionally. What are some signs of the wrong boss? Well, anyone who:●is surrounded by the same team year after year. If you’re such a good teacher, why aren’t these people moving on and getting promoted?●is short of a sense of humor. Life is short. Work is hard. Let’s lighten up when facing something di fficult.●loves typing. Hates talking. Why are you emailing me whenI sit across the hall?Who are the best bosses I ever had? Angela, my first boss out of college, was very clever and outspoken. She ruffled feathers around the company but was eager to letme in on what she thought and why.My boss Tom used to say: “You can sleep when you’re dead.”Working for Tom was just a bit exhausting. But he was also unbelievably straightforward, and quick to ask advice and give it. We often had different opinions, yet our discussions helped both of us learn more about what we were trying to perform. A great boss both gives respect and earns it.And how do you know when you’ve found the right boss? Be yourself with them and see if the self they are with you is someone you want to learn from for a couple of years. If that person is dull or dogmatic in an interview, guess what they’re going to be like Monday through Friday? Interviewees are on their best behavior in that setting, but so are interviewers. You don’t like wha t you see? The power is yours. Go out and interview another boss.Language Points1 Explanation of Difficult Sentences1. (Para. 1) And going back further, I can still recall things about the stars that I should have long ago forgotten if not for my second-grade teacher, Miss Scorchiotti ... Analysis: This is a complex sentence. That introduces a relative clause to modify the stars, followed by an if-clause of condition. Attention should be paid to the subjunctive mood used here: should have forgotten, ... with the latter part being an elliptical clause which can be assumed to be if it were not for ...Translation: 再早些,我仍然记得有关星体的知识,若不是由于我二年级的斯高奇奥迪老师,我早就将其忘光了。

He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed really hard to get the thread(线) to run smoothly around the needle(针).Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamed that he had been caught by terrible soldiers whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the prison and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears(矛) raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practical sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. It stores all kinds of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images(图像) which the conscious part may not know at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called“secret messages to ourselves ”.1.According to the passage, Elias Howe was _______.A.the first person that solved problems in his sleepB.much more hard-working than other inventorsC.the first person to design a sewing machine that really workedD.the only person at the time who knew the value of dreams2.The problem Howe was trying to solve was _______.A.what kind of thread to useB.where to put the needleC.how to design a needle which would not breakD.how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle3.Thomas Edison is spoken of because _______.A.he also tried to invent a sewing machine B.he got some of his ideas from dreamsC.he was one of Howe's best friends D.he also had difficulty in falling asleep4.What does the underlined phrase “secret messages to ourselves” mean?A.Strange images are used to communicate ideas.B.Images which have no meaning are used.C.We can never understand the real meaning.D.Some specially trained people can know them.B14、This weekend a marathon ( 马拉松) took place in Salzburg. I admired the runners who ran 42.2 kilometers for over four hours. But I've never run for more than half an hour.At university I play korfball. This is a team sport with eight people on each team. The aim is to shoot ( 投篮) the ball into the hoop. All players get a chance to attack ( 攻) and defend ( 守) during the game and it's very fast. When I started korfball, I wasn't very good at it. I could throw and catch but I wasn't very fast on my feet. Shooting was also difficult for me. However, I really enjoyed the sport and made friends in the club, so I went training twice a week. Two years later I am in the first team for my university and have played in many matches. This just shows if you train hard, you can succeed.Running is difficult because you have to make yourself willing to keep going. I used to get really out of breath while running and I didn't feel good at all! Now I actually enjoy going for a run along the river in Salzburg, feeling my muscles ( 肌肉) working and breathing in the fresh air.Challenging exercise is always worth doing. Hiking is fun because all the hard work—walking uphill comes at the beginning of the day, then at the top of the mountain you can enjoy the view. At the end of the day you feel like you've really achieved something.I will never be a marathon runner, but I would like to try a 10-km run sometime, or perhaps even a half-marathon. How happy the runners were as they crossed the finishing line! I'd like to have that feeling—the months of training paying off as you achieve your goal.1.What did the writer think of running the marathon at first?A.Difficult. B.Strange. C.Enjoyable. D.Exciting.2.When the writer started korfball, he couldn't .A.catch and throw a ball B.catch and shoot a ballC.move quickly while playing D.catch the ball from teammates3.Why does the writer think challenging exercise is worth doing?A.It helps him make lots of friends. B.It gives him a sense of achievement.C.It makes him become a marathon runner. D.It helps him get to the top of the mountain.C15、It can be hard to meet people from another culture. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize(强调)the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary. Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural(多元文化)environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.1.In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to ______.A.keep each other companyB.share the same cultureC.get to know each otherD.develop closer relations2.The writer mentions his experience in Thailand to show that ______.A.too many words are of no useB.the English prefer to make long speechesC.even talk and silence can be culturally differentD.people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature3.What would be the best title for the passage?A.Multicultural EnvironmentB.Cross-Cultural DifferencesC.How to Understand Each OtherD.How to Build Up a RelationshipD16、A mother in Australia was told by a doctor that her Passage oneEarly one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.1.According to the passage, Elias Howe was________.【C】A. the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleepB. much more hard-working than other inventorsC. the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked2.The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.【A 】A. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needleB. how to design a needle which would not breakC. where to put the needle3.Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.【B】A. he also tried to invent a sewing machineB. he got some of his ideas from dreamsC. he was one of Howe’s best friends4.Dreams are sometimes called“secret messages to ourselves” because___.【A】A. strange images are used to communicate ideasB. images which have no meaning are usedC. we can never understand the real meaningPassage twoThe greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to haveits full effect on women’ s economic position. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.5.We are told that in an average family about 1990________.【D】A. many children died before they were fiveB. the youngest child would be fifteenC. seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD. four or five children died when they were five6. When she was over fifty, the late 19th century mother________.【D】A. would expect to work until she diedB. was usually expected to take up paid employmentC. would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentD. was unlikely to find a job even if she is now likely7. Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.【 D 】A. marry so that they can get a jobB. leave school as soon as they canC. give up their jobs for good after they are marriedD. continue working until they are going to have a baby8. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.【 C 】A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. marry while still at schoolPassage threeSwimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.【B】A. they can talkB. they start walkingC. they have no fear of the waterD. they are five or six years old10. The author believes that fear of water is_____.【 B 】A. stupidB. sensibleC. dangerousD. not smart11. The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____.【A】A. Picture (1)B. Picture (2)C. Picture (3)D. Picture (4)12. According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____.【D】A. the water is too coldB. your parents would not be happyC. something in the water might attackD. you might drownPassage fourAmericans spend their free time in various ways.America is a country of sports—of hunting, fishing and swimming, and of team sports like baseball and football. 【 B 】A. why America is a country of sportsB. how Americans spend their free timeC. why America is a "self-improvement" country14. The writer mentions the foundation of the country in order to indicate ________.【C 】A. the early history of AmericaB. the American people's determination to liveC. the reason for Americans' willingness to cooperate and share responsibility15.Which of the following best explains the meaning of the underlined word “leisure"【C】A. work timeB. energyC. spare time16.What can we infer from the text【 A 】A. The first settlers left their hometown for political and religious reasons.B. Many Americans don′t trust the central government.C. My working hou rs aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.17. The purpose of this passage is to ________.【C】A. explain how to use the InternetB. describe t he writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technologyC. tell the merits(价值) and usefulness of the InternetD. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet18. The use of E-mail has made it possible for the writer to ________.【B】A. spend less time workingB. have more free time with his childC. work at home on weekendsD. work at a speed comfortable to him19. According to the writer, E-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one ________.【A 】A. reach a group of people at one time convenientlyB. keep one’s communication as personal as possibleC. pass on much more information than the laterD. get in touch with one’s friends faster than the later20. The best title for this passage is ________.【D】A. Computer: New Technological AdvancesB. Internet: New Tool to Maintain Good FriendshipC. Computers Have Made Life EasierD.
