But the organizers of a new study say there's no scientific evidence that early musical training affects the intelligence of young people. An estimated 80 percent of American adults think music lessons improve children's ability to learn or their performance in school. They, say that the satisfaction for learning to play a new song helps a child express creativity.Researchers at Harvard University, however, have found that there's one thing musical training does not do. They say it does not make children more intelligent. Samuel Mehr is a graduate student at Harvard's School of Education. He said it is wrong to think that learning to play a musical instrument improves a child's intellectual development. He says the evidence comes from studies that measured the mental ability of two groups of 4-year-olds and their parents. One group attended music class, the other went to a class that places importance on the visual arts—arts that can be seen.“The evidence there is ‘no’. We found no evidence for any advantage on any of these tests for the kids participating in these music classes,” said Mehr. Samuel Mehr says researchers have carried out many studies in an effort to learn whether musical training can make children smarter. He says the results have been mixed. He says only one study seems to show a small percentage increase in IQ, intellectual scores among students after one year of music lessons. He does not believe that IQ is a good measure of child's intelligence. He says researchers in his study compared how well children in the musical training group did on mental processing tasks or projects, then the results were compared to those of children who did not take lessons. There was no evidence that the musical training group did much better on the mental tasks than the other group. The researchers confirmed the results with a larger group of children and their parents. Mr. Mehr says music lessons may not offer children a fast easy way to gain entry to the best schools later in their life. But he says the training is still important for cultural reasons. In his words, “We teach music because music is important for us.”语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文.哈佛大学最近的一项研究表明,没有证据证明接受了音乐教育的孩子比没有接受音乐教育的孩子的智商更高.1.According to the new study, musical training ________.A.makes children smarterB.helps a child express creativityC.does not make children more intelligentD.improve children's ability to learn in school答案:C推理判断题.根据文章第一段第二句“But the organizers of a new study say there's no scientific evidence that early musical training affects the intelligence of young people.”可推断,上过音乐培训课的孩子并不会比没上过音乐培训课的孩子更聪明.故选C项.2.Samuel Mehr may agree that ________.A.the children who attended music class are smarter than those who attended arts classB.IQ is a good measure of a child's intelligenceC.we needn't to teach children musicD.music training is still important for cultural reasons答案:D细节理解题.由最后一段的最后两句“But he says the training is still important for cultural reasons. Kassidy Owen, who escaped with their lives.“It’s strange to hear the silence,”Owen said,“because all I remember was the noise.”The 22-year-old was one of dozens of concertgoers who returned to the scene of the Route 91 Harvest festival on Wednesday morning to fetch the vehicles they left behind as they fled from a gunman raining down bullets from high above in the tower of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino across the street.Survivors of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday needed their cars to move on with their lives——to get back to work,to school, home. It was the first time they were returning to a scene that would forever change them, when joy and celebration and music turned into killing and horror. Before they could move forward, they had to go back to the place where they thought they were going to die.Owen had run to her car to hide and had tried to drive away, but she couldn’t.People were running, bodies dropped to the ground, and cars bottlenecked in the parking lot.During a brief pause after more than 10 minutes of gunfire, she worried the lights of her SUV made everyone inside a shining target.“They’re shooting again!”her best friend’s brother screamed.“Turn off the car!”That’s when she got out and fled.“I just remember shutting the door and running,”Owen said. Now,nearly three days later, she was back, sitting in the driver’s seat of her SUV.Her eyes were levels of self-regulation in the fall did better on tests of reading, vocabulary, and math in the spring than children with low levels of self-regulation.Dr Ponitz has pointed that the ability to control and direct one’s own feelings, thoughts, and actions is self-regulation.It can be as simple as a child raising his hand when asking a question in class,or as complex as a child controlling his feelings when disappointed or angry. While the ability to self-regulate has long been considered as an essential part of a child’s healthy emotional development,self-regulation is increasingly being seen as a good predictor of a child’s academic success.According to Dr McClelland,a number of studies have found thatself-regulation largely predicts literacy (读写能力)outcomes in children. In their research,McClelland and Ponitz found that aspects of self-regulation not only predicted literacy outcomes in preschool and elementary school, but also predicted the gains in literacy children made during that time.Good self-regulation skills are also important for a child’s social development.“Self-regulation helps children succeed in classroom environment,” McClelland says.“The children who can successfully handle these learning environments have better relationships with their teachers, are more liked by their classmates, and do better academically. They are also more motivated to achieve because of these skills.”The good news for parents and educators is that easy ways to help children develop self-regulation skills may be as close as the local playground. Both Ponitz and McClelland suggest that classic games where children must follow directions and wait to take turns may be particularly suited for the development of self-regulation.5.According to Dr Ponitz,self-regulation is .A.the ability to control and direct one’s own feelings, thoughts and actionsB.the ability to handle the learning environment successfullyC.the skills to pass reading, vocabulary and math testsD.the short-term gain in one’s academic success6.Good self-regulation skills are important for a child in the following aspects except .A.his emotional developmentB.his academic successC.his social distance,or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder.Position yourself carefully.Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face, and that you’re not standing with your back to a light.2Find out how the person prefers to communicate. Some deaf people are better lip-readers than others. Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter.Main interactions between the deaf and the persons who can hear the sound require a combination of thesemethods.3Method 2:Communicating through Lip-reading.Keep your sentences simple and use plain Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have wo rked there onand off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.”His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide. 学.科网31. The modern French lifestyle.B. The self-supporting hunting.C. The uncivilized world.D. The French Republic.BA warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more mela tonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed thesandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elizabeth explains, “Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business.”Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans' corporation makes more than $20 millioneach year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.语篇解读本文是记叙文。

After all, the scientist is engaged in serious research to uncover the very nature of the physical world, and the baby is, well, just playing... right? Perhaps, but some developmental psychologists(心理学家) h ave argued that this “play” is more like a scientific investigation than one might think.Take a closer look at the baby playing at the table. Each time the bowl of rice is pushed over the table edge, it falls to the ground—and, in the process, it brings out important evidence about how physical objects interact(相互作用): bowls of ricedo not float in midair, but require support to remain stable. It is likely that babies are not born knowing this basic fact of the universe; nor are they ever clearly taught it. Instead, babies may form an understanding of object support through repeated experiments and then build on this knowledge to learn even more about how objects interact. Though their ranges and tools differ, the baby's investigation and the scientist's experiment appear to share the same aim(to learn about the natural world), overall approach(gathering direct evidence from the world), and logic(are my observations what I expected?).Some psychologists suggest that young children learn about more than just the physical world in this way—that they investigate human psychology and the rules of language using similar means. For example, it may only be through repeated experiments, evidence gathering, and finally overturning a theory, that a baby will come to accept the idea that other people can have different views and desires from what he or she has, for example, unlike the child, Mommy actually doesn't like Dove chocolate.Viewing childhood development as a scientific investigation throws light on how children learn, but it also offers an inspiring look at science and scientists. Why do young children and scientists seem to be so much alike? Psychologists have suggested that science as an effort—the desire to explore, explain, and understand our world—is simply something that comes from our babyhood. Perhaps evolution(进化) provided human babies with curiosity and a natural drive to explain their worlds, and adult scientists simply make use of the same drive that served them as children. The same cognitive(认知的) systems that make young children feel good about figuring something out may have been adopted by adult scientists. As some psychologists put it, “It is not that children are little scientists but that scientists are big children.”语篇解读本文探讨了科学家和六个月大的婴儿之间的关联。

The UK promises to reduce its carbon emissions (排放)by 80 percent by 2050, part of which will be achieved by all new homes being zero-carbon by 2016. But this report shows that sustainable building design on its own-though extremely important-is not enough to achieve such reductions the behaviour of the people using the building has to change too.The study suggests that the ways that people use and live in their homes have been largely ignored by existing efforts to improve energy efficiency (效率),which instead focus on architectural and technological developments.“Technology is going to assist but it is not going to do everything,”explains Katy Janda, a UKERC senior researcher,“consumption patterns of building users can defeat the most careful design.” In other words, old habits die hard, even in the best-designed eco-home.Another part of the problem is information. Households and bill-payers don't have the knowledge they need to change their energy-use habits. Without specific information,it's hard to estimate the costs and benefits of making different choices. Feedback (反馈) facilities, like smart meters and energy monitors, could help bridge this information gap by helping people see how changing their behaviour directly affects their energy use; some studies have shown that households can achieve up to 15 percent energy savings using smart meters.Social science research has added a further dimension (方面),suggesting that individuals' behaviour in the home can be personal and cannot be predicted-whether people throw open their windows rather than turn down the thermostat (恒温器) , for example.Janda argues that education is the key. She calls for a focused programme to teach people about buildings and their own behaviour in them.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了建筑使用者的行为习惯和建筑设计一样重要.25.As to energy use, the new research from UKERC stresses the importance of ________.A.the behaviour of building users B.zero-carbon homesC.sustainable building design D.the reduction of carbon emissions答案:A细节题,根据第一段的“The behaviour of a building's users may be at least as important as its design when it comes to energy use, according to new research from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC)”可知UKERC的研究强调建筑使用者的行为.故选A.26.What are Katy Janda's words mainly about?A.The necessity of making a careful building design.B.The importance of changing building users' habits.C.The variety of consumption patterns of building users.D.The role of technology in improving energy efficiency.答案:B细节题,根据第三段最后一句的“...old habits die hard, even in the best-designedeco-home”可知积习难改,旧习惯可能会毁掉最好的建筑设计,故选B.27.The information gap in energy use ________.A.affects the study on energy monitorsB.can be bridged by feedback facilitiesC.brings about problems for smart metersD.will be caused by building users' old habits答案:B细节题.根据第四段第四句的“Feedback (反馈) facilities, like smart meters and energy monitors, could help bridge this information gap by helping people see how changing their behaviour directly affects their energy use; some studies have shown that households can achieve up to 15 percent energy savings using smart meters”可知选B.28.What does the dimension added by social science research suggest?A.The social science research is to be furthered.B.The education programme is under discussion.C.The behaviour preference of building users is similar.D.The behaviour of building users is unpredictable.答案:D细节题.根据第五段“...suggesting that individuals' behaviour in the home can be personal and cannot be predicted”可知选D.CA person has to be sixteen to drive, seventeen to see certain movies, and eighteen to vote. But it was growing dark and getting hard to see the paper.“I didn't have a flashlight, and I didn't want to open the car door because then the whole car would light up.”recalled Becky. “So I thought it would be neat to have my paper light up somehow, and that's when the idea came to me.”It isn't every day that a ten-year-old invents a product eagerly sought by several businesses, but that's exactly what Becky Schroeder did when she created a tool that enabled people to write in the dark. Her invention? The Glo-sheet.That night Becky went home, trying to imagine different ways of making her paper glow in the dark. She remembered all sorts of glow-in-the-dark toys-like balls and Frisbees-and wondered how they were made. She was determined to find a solution. So they very next day, Beck's dad took her on an outing to the hardware store. They returned with a pail (桶) of phosphorescent paint. Shetook the paint and stacks of paper into the darkest room in the house-the bathroom. There, she experimented.“I'd turn on the light, turn it off, turn it on,” said Becky. “My parents remember me running out the room saying‘It works, it works! I'm writing in the dark!’”She used an acrylic board and coated it with a specific amount of phosphorescent paint. She took a complicated idea and made it work rather simply. When the coated clipboard is exposed to light, it glows. The glowing board then illuminates or lights up the paper that has been placed on top. Two years after her initial inspiration, in 1974, Becky became the youngest female ever to receive a U.S. patent. She didn't actively market her Glo-sheet. She didn't need to. The New York Times wrote an article about an incredible invention-patented by a twelve-year-old, and the inquiries and orders streamed in.语篇解读:本文讲述年龄的限制会制约人们的行为,但创造力是没有限制的,贝基在很小的年纪就发明了发光的表格就充分证明了这一点.29.From Paragraph 1 , we can draw a conclusion that ________.A.it is illegal for one to drive under sixteenB.people enjoy privileges when over sixty-fiveC.one is never too old or too young to inventD.people hate the limitations that define our behavior答案:C细节理解题.根据第一段提到“Everywhere we look there are age limits that define what people can and can't do.”到处我们能够看到年龄限制,人们能做什么,不能做什么,可知选C项.30.What caused Becky to invent Glo-sheet?A.She was trying to do homework when it got dark.B.She was having trouble with math problems.C.She was trying to earn some money.D.She was working on a school project.答案:A细节理解题.根据第四段提到“...that's exactly what Becky Schroeder did when she created a tool that enabled people to write in the dark.”可知他的发明为的是那些在黑暗中不能写的人发明的,故选A项.31.What is the meaning of the underlined words “phosphorescent paint” in paragraph 5?A.paint that acts as a glue B.paint that covers a markC.paint that becomes hard D.paint that glows in the dark答案:D细节理解题.根据第五段提到“That night Becky went home, trying to imagine different ways of making her paper glow in the dark”可见他提着能够发光的漆返回,故选D项.DOdland remembers like it was yesterday working in an expensive French restaurant in Denver. The ice cream he was serving fell onto the white dress of a rich and important woman.Thirty years have passed, but Odland can not get the memory out of his mind, nor the woman's kind reaction. She was shocked, regained calmness and, in a kind voice, told the young Odland. “It is OK. It wasn't your fault.” When she left the restaurant, she also left the future Fortune 500 CEO with a life lesson: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats the waiter.Odland isn't the only CEO to have made this discovery. Instead, it seems to be one of those few laws of the land that every CEO learns on the way up. It's hard to get a dozen CEOs to agree about anything, but most agree with the Waiter Rule. They say how others treat the CEO says nothing. But how others treat the waiter is like a window into the soul.Watch out for anyone who pulls out the power card to say something like, “I could buy this place and fire you,” or “I know the owner and I could have you fired.” Those who say such things have shown more about their character than about their wealth and power. The CEO who came up with it, or at least first wrote it down, is Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson. He wrote a best-selling book called Swanson's Unwritten Rules of Management. “A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person,” Swanson says. “I will never offer a job to the person who is sweet to the boss but turns rude to someone cleaning the tables.”语篇解读:本文讲述的作者在一酒店打工时把冰激凌弄到一位贵妇身上,却没受到责备,反而得到了安慰,那位贵妇的话成了许多CEO管理员工的准则,核心就是人与人之间应相互尊重.32.What happened after Odland dropped the ice cream onto the woman's dress?A.He was fired.B.He was blamed.C.The woman comforted him.D.The woman left the restaurant at once.答案:C细节理解题.由第二段第三行可知.“It is OK. Staying up late contributes to lack of sleep and this, in turn, causes problems such as lack of control and attention regulation, which are associated with antisocial behavior, ” said Dr. Elizabeth J. Susman.Susman and her team did the research in 111 subjects between 8 to 13 years old.The researchers found a number of factors were related to antisocial behavior in the study group, particularly in the boys. For girls, a preference for evening activities was associated with a higher chance of relational aggression or aggressive behavior towards their peers.Boys who experienced prolonged high levels of cortisol(皮质醇) tended to have more behavior problems than their peers. The association was not true for girls, however.Normally, levels of cortisol peak in the morning upon awakening and are stable during the afternoon and evening hours.Abnormalities in cortisol secretion (分泌) have also been associated with clinical depression and antisocial behavior in earlier studies.Boys who hit adolescence at earlier ages also tended to engage in more rule-breaking and attention behavior problems than other boys, while girls who were younger at puberty reported more relational aggression compared with their peers.Overall, caregivers should be watchful to bedtime activities of children and young adolescents. Monitoring these activities is essential for making sure that children and adolescents are going to sleep in time to assure enough sleep for good functioning in school and other things.36.In the study, the researchers found that ________.A.the youth mustn't stay up too late at any timeB.it was the preference for nighttime activities that caused antisocial behaviorC.nighttime activities didn't have effects on girlsD.not only the adolescents but also the little children were easily influenced by more evening activities37.We can find the possible results of staying up too late EXCEPT ________.A.lack of sleepB.difficult to focus one's attentionC.easily out of controlD.not like daytime activities any more38.Comparing boys and girls, the researchers suggest that ________.A.if they experience prolonged high levels of cortisol, they both will have more behavior problems than their peersB.if boys hit puberty at earlier ages, they tend to have behavior problemsC.abnormalities in cortisol secretion aren't associated with aggressive behaviorD.cortisol secretion is more important for girls39.From the last paragraph we can infer that ________.A.parents should be watchful to bedtime activities of their childrenB. we must make sure that children don't do wrong thingsC.good sleep is important for children's good performance at schoolD.bedtime activities are important40.What's the best title for the passage?A.Sleep patterns are linked to teen behaviorB.Staying up late is a bad habitC.The youth like to sleep lateD.Antisocial behavior is due to overtime night activities。

In today's newspaper, an accident was reported.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________答案:范文赏读In_today's_newspaper,_an_accident_was_reported. Someone was badly hurt by a bottle thrown out of a window of a building. Actually, if we look around, we will find that things of this kind are not uncommon.Cigarette ends, cans, plastic bags and bottles can be seen here and there.Needless to say, such behavior will ruin our environment and become a bad habit if we do nothing. In my opinion, every one of us should first of all make sure that we don't throw rubbish around ourselves. What is more, we should persuade others not to do so.And finally, rules should be made to stop such behavior.Only in this way can we create a better environment and live more happily.大题巧练40Module 4Music Born in America[授课提示:对应学生用书第359页]一、阅读理解A(2017·江西模拟)Here is a letter from the Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant on The Players' Tribune website on November 30th.“...This seaso n is all I have left to give. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. I have worke d there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships withthem. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”“I wa nted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. 学.科网31. The FrenchRepublic.BA warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.35. 2019版高考英语一轮(通用版)课时提升作业: 三十三 选修7 Unit 3 含答案
课时提升作业三十三选修7Unit 3Under the sea(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AUntil recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites. Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans. The map is expected to help oceanographers (海洋学家), industry and governments. The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean. The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. Some of the data came from the European Space Agenc y’s Cryo-2 satellite. It was placed in Earth’s orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American space agency’s Jason-1. It is studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar (声呐) equipment on ships. Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed. The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor.David Sandwell says the map is a powerful tool for fisheries, those interested in protecting the environment and for oil exploration.“The petrol exploration industry is interested in how to reconnect the continents, bring them back together tectonically so you can map the basins on one continental edge—say, Africa—and use that to establish where the similar basin would be on the other continental edge in South America. ”If scientists know that information, they may be able to find oil fields. The new data also will help scientists improve their estimates of ocean depths. This information can help ships travel safely and improve military operations and scientific projects worldwide.Mr Sandwell thinks scientists will make many more discoveries as they examine the new map and the information it provides.【文章大意】这是一篇介绍关于新的海洋洋流地图的科普类文章。
