A(2016·北京海淀模拟) Twelve years ago,I arrived in Central Florida from Puerto Rico.I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it.But it never became a reality.I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando.Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family,I had to face another challenge—hunger. For the first time in my life,I,as a foreign man,who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the desperation someone feels when they don't get enough to eat.I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding programme before they closed at 7 pm.Once the need for food was met,the next challenge would arise—where to find a place to sleep for the night.Fortunately, local programmes like the Coalition for the Homeless,Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Centre were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience. With the assistance of these programmes,I was accepted by a college scholarship programme through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia. My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards.Today,I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programmes Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversees the summer feeding,Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programmes.I am also proud to be able to distribute (分配) food resources to those wonderful programmes and help hundreds more like me.【语篇解读】本文为记叙文,讲述了作者在陌生的地方的经历与感受。

Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question: "Should I jump? " This is what motivation or the lack of it can do. Motivation and goal setting are the two sides ofthe same coin. 1 Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.2 More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal? Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – problem, I don’t want you in my life.16 Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings. But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems.Talk, it really helps. Lady, I beg you to look where you're going!” A man complained to a journalist yesterday. Today, this art form is facing the danger of extinction as the younger generation is mostly interested in pop culture.A Peking Opera project for primary and secondary schools was launched by China's Ministry of Education. But it has met with a cold reaction from the public. More than half of the 1,000 respondents from ten big cities expressed doubts about the practical meaning of the project in the survey conducted by the Social Survey Institute of China. The project plans to add 15 Peking Opera pieces into music courses in 200 schools in ten provinces. The pilot programs will last from March to July next year. At present, teaching materials and video tapes are still in production, China News Service reported. The Ministry of Education hopes that the promotional course can help students better appreciate Chinese culture and cultivate a love for the mother country. The surveyed people do recognize Peking Opera as a comprehensive (综合性的) art form and a representative of the traditional culture. They also understand the purpose of the educational project. However, they wonder whether it is necessary for every student to learn to sing Peking Opera, when they are already stressed from endless exams. Keep it secureAll apps collect data as you use them. Following these four steps will help ensure you're not oversharing. For starters, download apps only from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, not from random websites. 1.Before you accept an app's terms and conditions, look at what information it's planning to collect and think twice if it's asking for too many permissions. 2.Also, most apps don't need to know your location, but for those that do, you can choose to enable location services only when using the particular app, another smart privacy safeguard.Sign up using an e-mail address you've set up just for things like app permissions and e-mail newsletters.3.This way, if there is a security breach (缺口), your exposure is contained to things connected to that address.4.This means a long one (at least ten characters) with a mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters– and, sorry, a unique password for each app. According to security experts, a good trick is to create a memorable "passphrase" by creating a series of random words, and then substitute numbers or special characters (i.e., @ for at) for some of the letters.5.Go ahead and write them down — just store your cheat sheet in a secure location (not your wallet or phone case!). Or enlist a password manager such as 1Password or LastPass.A. For example, why would a gaming app need access to your text messages?B. How will you ever remember them all?C. Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth — but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.Martine puts it down to among other things, soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, rol e in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.“Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction (生育), they describe middle and upper class values: not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working,” says Martine. “They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.”Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers (消费者). “This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction,” says Martine.56.
