单元加餐练Ⅰ.阅读理解AThe best reporters I know are bright, persistent, honest, curious and courageous. If you asked them to explain their success, this is what they might say:Helen: A good reporter is a generalist, able to deal with a number of topics and talk with a variety of people. He or she can see the unusual, the ironic (讽刺的) in the everyday things. She can think through all the possibilities and organize a large amount of information to find the important parts.Jack: A good reporter is quick. Once he is assigned a story, he goes after it. He makes the calls and keeps trying if he doesn't make contact with the people he wants to interview. Besides, a good reporter is curious. He or she takes pleasure in the new, and in the old, in the history or previous examples that got us where we are. He enjoys reading and appreciates the details.Susan: A good reporter is pleasant. She adopts a friendly nature with those she meets. She is a grateful guest, with a belief in the basic goodness of people. She conveys to those she meets that she is tolerant of them and their ideas, even though she doesn't like them or what they stand for.Tom: A good reporter is honest. He seeks the truth and acts independently. He does what he says he's going to do, and doesn't do anything he promised to avoid. He returns his calls, and he's willing tosay no. He is obsessed with accuracy and double checks his facts with call-backs. He sees both sides to every issue.Richard: As Jon Frankli n, reporter, author and teacher, said, “Back when I first started, I thought intelligence was the most important attribute a reporter could have. I have since changed my mind. You do have to be intelligent, but the big thing is courage. Courage to open your mind and let the whole confusing world in. Courage to take criticism. Courage to grow with your experiences. Courage to accept what you don't understand. Most of all, courage to see what is there and not what you want to think is there.”篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

单元加餐练Ⅰ.阅读理解AThe British live on a small island. They are surrounded by the sea,so it is not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, oceangoing sailing ships in the fifteenth century, the sea became even more important to the country's development.Ships setting sail from England determined to extend Britain's territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the world. Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places. By the nineteenth century,Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world. The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical(航海的)terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describe an honest and fair business deal as being“above board”.This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship's business would be carried out below decks(i.e.below the boards)out of public view.On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck(above the boards),in the open where everyone could see what was going on.“Pipe down!”,meaning“Be quiet!”,is another common expression that has nautical origins. The ship's boatswain(水手长)would blow a whistle,or pipe,at the end of the day to indicate(表明)to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep. Most native English speakers have heard the expression“not enough room to swing a cat”,but few know that the“cat”does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The“cat”is actually a short form of“cat of nine tails”—a whip with nine, knotted(打结的)tails.A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing(鞭打)a poor sailorunder hiscontrol!篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

单元加餐练Ⅰ.阅读理解AMandara seemed to know something big was about to happen. So she let out a yell, caught hold of her 2-year-old daughter Kibibi and climbed up into a tree. She lives at the National Zoo in Washington DC.And on Tuesday, August 23rd, witnesses said she seemed to sense the big earthquake that shook much of the East Coast before any humans knew what was going on. And she's not the only one. In the moments before the quake, an orangutan (猩猩) let out a loud call and then climbed to the top of her shelter.“It's very different from their normal call,” said Brandie Smith, the zookeeper. “The lemurs (monkey-like animals of Madagascar) will sound an alarm if they see or hear something highly unusual.”But you can't see or hear an earthquake 15 minutes before it happens, can you? Maybe you can—if you're an animal. “Animals can hear above and below our range of hearing,”said Brandie Smith. “That's part of their special abilities. They're more sensitive to the environment, which is how they survive.”Primates weren't the only animals that seemed to sense the quake before it happened. One of the elephants made a warning sound. And a huge lizard (蜥蜴) ran quickly for cover. The flamingoes (a kind of birds) gathered before the quake and stayed together until the shaking stopped. So what kind of vibrations (震动) were the animals picking up in the moments before the quake? Scientist Susan Hough said earthquakes produce two types of waves—a weak “P” wave and then a much stronger “S” wave. The “P” stands for “primary”. And the “S” stands for “secondary”. She thinks the “P” wave might be what sets the animals off.Not all the animals behaved unusually before the quake. Forexample, Smith said the zoo's giant pandas didn't jump up until the shaking actually began. But many of the other animals seemed to know something was coming before it happened. “I'm not surprised at all,”Smith said.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

单元加餐练Ⅰ.阅读理解ALooking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War Ⅰ we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal (清澈的) clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious (意识清醒的) mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and several books, in which some might be honored with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist. One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made a naturalist. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.篇章导读:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。

B.Tour B.C.Tour C. D.Tour D.BOn a cool morning,Wilson Kasaine heads out along a dirt path in southern Kenya. His calmness makes it easy to forget that he’s tracking one of the most dangerous animals in the world.Kasaine is tracking lions—especially one lion called Marti, who is the real-life Lion King of Selenkay Conservancy.Tracking lions on foot may sound like a death wish, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life.Born into a traditional Maasai family,he quickly grew to understand the beauty and danger of wildlife.Living with big wild animals forces him to develop a good sense of where they have been and where they may be going.During his 12-kilometer walks to and from school,he learned how to tell the paw prints(爪印) of a lion from those of other animals.Growing up,Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid surprisemeetings with dangerous animals. For many Maasai, tracking is mainly a matter of self-protection.But Kasaine is tracking lions to meet them and to protect them.He leads a small group of wide-eyed tourists over the red sandy path, searching for the lion that has left upon it his prints. Each year, thousands of tourists crowd Kenya’s national parks to try to have a look at the “big five”;elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes and lions. The international draw of these animals matters a lot because the nation’s economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya’s wildlife disappears,so does its second-largest source of income.Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya meant marking off land exclusively(专门地) for animals. But it also meant that the people who had originally lived in the area were forced to leave their land and into smaller surrounding areas. They are also finding it increasingly hard to keep a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But people are glad that it really makes a difference to wildlife protection.24.How did Kasaine track lions?A.By working together with tourists.B.By running after them all the time.C.By going to school every day.D.By studying their paw prints.25.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?A.Maasai people are born animal lovers.B.Tourism is a big threat to Kenya’s wildlife.C.Kenya benefits a lot from its wildlife protection.D.Small animals are not included in their protection policy.26.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?A.Kenya’s economic development.B.People’s leaving their original homes.C.Kenya’s second-largest income source.D.Kenyan people’s traditional Maasai lifestyle.27.What is the best title for the text?A.Wildlife Protection in KenyaB.Meeting a Dangerous AnimalC.Wilson Kasaine’s Wise ChoiceD.Learning to Live with LionsCTight-lipped elders used to say,“It’s not what you want in this world, but what you get.”Psychology teaches that you do get what you want if you know what you want and want the right things. You can make a mental blueprint of a desire as you would make a blueprint of a house, and each of us is continually making these blueprints in the general routine of everyday living. If we intend to have friends to dinner,we plan the menu, make a shopping list, decide which food to cook first, and such planning is essential for any type of meal to be served.Likewise,if you want to find a job, take a sheet of paper, and write a brief account of yourself. In making a blueprint for a job, begin with yourself, for when you know exactly what you have to offer, you can intelligently plan where to sell your services. This account of yourself is actually a sketch of your working life and should include education, experience and references.Such an account is valuable. It can be referred to in filling out standard application blanks and is extremely helpful in personal interviews. While talking to you, your could-be employer is deciding whether your education, your experience, and other qualifications will pay him to employ you and your abilities must be displayed in an orderly and reasonably connected manner. When you have carefully prepared a blueprint of your abilities and desires, you have something tangible to sell. Then you are ready to hunt for a job.Get all the possible information about your could-be job.Make inquiries as to the details concerning the job and the firm.Keep your eyes and ears open, and use your own judgement.Spend a certain amount of time each day seeking the employment you wish for,and keep in mind:Obtaining a job is your job now.28.What do the elders mean when they say,“It’s not what you want in this world, but what you get”?A.You’ll certainly get what you want.B.It’s no use dreaming.C.You should be dissatisfied with what you have.D.It’s essential to set a goal for yourself.29.A blueprint made before inviting a friend to dinner is used in this passage as . A.an illustration of how to write an application for a jobB.an indication of how to secure a good jobC.a guideline for job descriptionD.a principle for job evaluation30.According to the passage, one must write an account of himself before starting to find a job because .A.that is the first step to please the employerB.that is the requirement of the employerC.it enables him to know when to sell his servicesD.it forces him to become clearly aware of himself31.When you have carefully prepared a blueprint of your abilities and desires, you have something .A.specific to offer B.imaginary to provideC.practical to supply D.desirable to presentDWhen asked how technology might improve the lives of people with vision impairments(视力障碍),Joann Becker presented a misleadingly simple challenge.“Well,” the vision impairments tech specialist recalls saying,“I’d like to be able to find my bus stop through Be My Eyes”.Be My Eyes, which went live in 2015,establishes a direct video connection between visually impaired users and sighted volunteers. The assumption is simple:Many people who are blind don’t need any actual assistance in completing their daily tasks, but merely need a little help.A sighted volunteer might be asked to help identify which of two cans contains tomatoes. In this case, the visually impaired user can cook a meal just fine on his/her own—all he/she needs is a quick confirmation that he/she has the correct can.The model appears to be working; more than 540,000 volunteers and nearly 40,000 people with low vision are registered on the app.“An elderly woman can now help a visually impaired technician set up his computer,” says founder,Hans Wiberg, who has very low vision.“She doesn’t need to know a thing about computers. She only needs to read what is presented on the screen. Then he can do the rest.”Early assistive technology centered on dedicated devices(专用设备),because of the nichemarket(缝隙市场),which sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. But the smartphone, multipurpose and near-universal,has completely changed the economy of scale.“There are larger market forces driving high-powered computation,high-quality engineering and high-quality battery management in the smartphone market than those in a specialty product,” says Aaron Steinfeld,a research professor at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.“The reality is,most sighted people don’t know somebody who is blind.”Becker says.“They think the solutions that a blind person needs are far more expansive,it turns out, they need to be.I think these apps are enabling sighted people to see that blind people just need some simple clues to help them do any number of things in their lives.”32.What is the first paragraph used for in the text?A.Showing the main idea.B.Introducing the topic.C.Giving one example.D.Making a conclusion.33.How does the app Be My Eyes work?A.By creating a video link between blind person and sighted one.B.By recognizing which of the two cans have tomatoes and cooking.C.By establishing a high-quality engineering and computation.D.By flashing the everyday tasks of the technician and volunteers.34.From the text we can know .A.only people with low vision are registered to use the appB.slight assistance can help the blind free from some troublesC.volunteers should be very familiar with high-tech computersD.Joann Becker thinks it hard to find a bus stop using Be My Eyes35.What do the 5th and 6th paragraphs mainly mean?A.Smartphone market has great economic potential.B.The smartphone becomes a special app.C.Fine devices have changed the economy.D.Cost matters when it comes to assistive technology.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

There are some considerations that you can make to reduce the cost of your Disney World vacation.1.Come PreparedPlan ahead so that you don't have to purchase a necessity at Disneyland that you could have brought from home. For example, check the weather so that you don't need to buy a raincoat or an umbrella.2.Buy Souvenirs in AdvanceDisney has influenced practically every industry, which makes it easy to find Disney items anywhere, from Walmart, Target, and your local grocery stores to department stores and Amazon. You can save a lot of money by purchasing items before your trip at these less expensive places than at Disneyland.3.Make an Autograph BookAn autograph book is seen as a must-have by many Disneyland enthusiasts and is a memory you can take home with you. These books can cost anywhere from 7.95 to 19.95 at the Disney Store and up to $30 for the latest-and-greatest autograph book at Disneyland, such as the park's 60th anniversary editions. Other choices can get the job done for under $5. For example, you can buy a small photo album, cute pads or notebooks.4.Take Advantage of Discounts Offered to Special GroupsDisney offers a wide variety of discounts, including military service members, college students, teachers, and youth groups. If you think you might qualify for a special discount or group rate, call the Disneyland Resort to book tickets.篇章导读:本文是一篇应用文。

单元加餐练Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2017·北京高考)Hollywood's theory that machines with evil (邪恶的) minds will drive armies of killer robots is just silly. The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence (AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want. In 1960 a well-known mathematician Norbert Wiener, who founded the field of cybernetics (控制论), put it this way:“If we use, to achieve our purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively interfere (干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really desire.”A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things: a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine, this quality is not in-born, nor is it something introduced by humans; it is a logical consequence of the simple fact that the machine cannot achieve its original purpose if it is dead. So if we send out a robot with the single instruction of fetching coffee, it will have a strong desire to secure success by disabling its own off switch or even killing anyone who might interfere with its task. If we are not careful, then, we could face a kind of global chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whose objectives conflict with our own, with the real world as the chessboard. The possibility of entering into and losing such a match should concentrate the minds of computer scientists. Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world. Unfortunately, that plan seems unlikely to work:we have yet to invent a firewall that is secure against ordinary humans, let alone super intelligent machines.Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AIseems to be possible but not easy. There are probably decades in which to plan for the arrival of super intelligent machines. But the problem should not be dismissed out of hand, as it has been by some AI researchers. Some argue that humans and machines can coexist as long as they work in teams—yet that is not possible unless machines share the goals of humans. Others say we can just “switch them off” as if super in telligent machines are too stupid to think of that possibility. Still others think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famous physicist Ernest Rutherford stated, with confidence, “Anyone who expects a source of power in the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” However, on September 12,1933, physicist Leo Szilard invented the neutron-induced (中子诱导) nuclear chain reaction.篇章导读:本文是一篇议论文。

Richard:As Jon Franklin, reporter, author and teacher, said,“Back when I first started,I thought intelligence was the most important attribute a reporter could have.I have since changed my mind. You do have to be intelligent, but the big thing is courage. Courage to open your mind and let the whole confusing world in.Courage to take criticism.Courage to grow with your experiences.Courage to accept what you
don't understand. Most of all, courage to see what is there and not what you want to think is there.”
