He was part of the 1920s expatriate community in Paris, and one of the veterans of World War I later known as “the lost Generation.”He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for the old man and the sea, and the Noble Prize in Literature in 1954. I want to tell you about my absolute favorite book of all time. It's called "The Old Man and the Sea" and it was written by this famous author named Ernest Hemingway. I first read it last year in my reading class and I've probably read it like ten times since then because I love it so much!The story is about this really old fisherman named Santiago who lives near the sea in Cuba. He hasn't caught any fish for 84 days which is a super long time! All the younger fishermen started making fun of him and calling him "salao" which means "the worst form of unlucky." That's so mean! His little friend Manolin used to go out on his fishing trips with him, but Manolin's parents made him stop after all the bad luck.Even though Santiago was so unlucky, he never got discouraged. Every day he would just wake up and go out in his little skiff all by himself, dropping his fishing lines way out in the Gulf Stream current to try and catch some fish. I think that shows how determined and brave Santiago is!Then one day, finally, something amazing happens! Santiago hooks this massive, ginormous, colossal marlin! It's bigger than his whole boat! He could barely even move the line because the marlin was just incredibly strong and powerful. Santiago had to be extremely patient, using all his skills and experience as an old fisherman.For two whole days and nights, Santiago is stuck in his tiny skiff, holding onto the line with all his strength. He doesn't have any food or water and his hands are getting cut up really badly from the fishing line. At one point, these awful killer sharks start attacking the marlin and ripping it apart! Santiago tries fighting them off with just a tiny harpoon and a butcher's knife. He's completely exhausted but he doesn't give up.Eventually, Santiago makes it back to the shore, basically hauling in just the bones of the marlin after the sharks ruined it. He struggles to tied the marlin skeleton to his boat and then falls asleep on his way back to his little shack. When the otherfishermen see the marlin bones, their jaws just drop! They'd never seen anything that big before.I don't want to ruin the very end for you, but that's basically what happens in the book. When I first finished it, I just sat there feeling like "Wow, that Santiago is the COOLEST!" He's so brave and persistent and skilled. Even though he failed at catching the marlin in the end because of those mean sharks, I have so much respect for him and how hard he tried. Heck, I'd probably have given up after one day with the marlin, haha!Santiago is definitely my hero after reading this book. He's like a real-life superhero but he's just an old, ordinary man. I want to have courage and determination like him someday. And I love how the story shows the bond between Santiago and the boy Manolin and how they respect each other so much. It's such a beautiful story overall!The writing is so good too. See, Ernest Hemingway was amazing at telling a whole story with just a few simple words and descriptions. But you can picture everything so clearly in your mind! Like when the sharks are tearing at the marlin, you can practically see and smell that bloody scene. Or the way Santiago talks to himself and thinks about baseball players and pretty ladies from his younger days. It's all so vivid!I really admire authors who can do so much while using hardly any words. That's why I love this book - the simple but powerful story and writing. You don't need crazy made-up fantasies or tons of big vocabulary words to make a book awesome. The Old Man and the Sea proves that a few hundred pages about a weathered old fisherman can be an epic,life-changing read if it's written well enough.It explores important themes about man versus nature, courage, friendship, youth versus old age, and much more. Yet it's not hard to read or understand at all. It's inspired me to maybe even try writing short stories myself one day. Book review of The Old Man And The SeaThe famous novel--The Old Man And The Sea is a book that I have always wanted to read in my high school. It tells a story about an old, experienced fisherman named Santiago who had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish and was considered "salao", the worst form of unlucky. On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago set out alone, confident that his unlucky streak was near its end.[1]By the moon of the day, an exceptionally huge marlintook his bait，which was 2 feet longer than his skiff. But the vigor of the big fish was so strong that it dragged the boat drifting for two days and two nights.Meanwhile, the old man held the line and bore the great tension from it without a break. Despite the injury and pain from the struggleSantiago still appreciated his rival and always regarded the marlin as his brother.Finally Santiago gathered all the strength he has left in him and managed to stab the marlin with a harpoon, ending the bitterly tough fight, which lasted for nearly two days.[2] On his way back, crowds of sharks were attracted by the blood scent of the big marlin.
