That I should return to the race and try to get elected and give back to the city that had given us so much. But by then, my campaign’s momentum was gone.I lost the race and I was absolutely devastated.Every question you can possibly image went through my head.Had the people of Atlanta forgotten me? Had they forgotten all the work that I had done? Did they lose faith in me? Were they disappointing [disappointed]? 3After three days of self-pity, my perspective changed.I realized there were more ways to serve my fellow citizens and my city than just being in elective office. But the lesson became crystal clear several roles into the future. And graduates, here’s the lesson:Failure’s not fatal. It’s feedback.Did you hear me? Put that in your phones.Failure is not fatal. It’s feedback.I wasn’t supposed to be the Mayor.Had I been the Mayor,I would not have been available to work as a senior officer at the Coca-Cola company where my maternal grandparents had worked for a combined 45 years - jobs that enabled my mother and her sister to be ‘first generation college graduates’.Nor would I perhaps have been on the radar to become a trustee here at Duke, alongside my good friend and fellow Dukie, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.Ya’ll know who that is? That’s a bad boy.And had I not met Adam, I may never have been a candidate for the President of the WNBA, the Women’s National Basketball Association, somebody say amen, one of the most rewarding roles that I have ever undertaken. 4So, I’m not just asking you, I’m advising you to anticipate defeat, strongly advising it.Don’t be surprised when it comes your way.Acknowledge it.Engage with inquisitive abandon and leave indelible fingerprints wherever you may go.Search for environments that may give you grief but they may also help you to grow. Now, no one taught me the importance of that eXistential eXploration better than my parents. And it was my father who showed me that in fact, it is in discomfort that we find ourmost defining moments. My dad became a doctor because he knew the circumstances were not the same for everybody, that some people were not as fortunate as our family was.And as he put it, he wanted to eliminate “dis-ease.” Are you with me, graduates? “Dis-ease.”That’s eXactly how he said it to me.When I was a little girl, I would go on house calls with him.The patients all knew and loved him and I saw how much he prided himself on being a caretaker, someone who did his very best to reverse their compromised positions of his patients - to put their mind and bodies at ease. But there was one house call I remember in particular. It’s seared in the back of my brain as if it happened yesterday. His diabetic patient was having a hypoglycemic attack. He told me to get the orange juice.I did, and I watched him save a woman’s life that day. 5I’ve never been able to shake the haunting feeling of this specific house call because of the significance it would take on later in my own life - and it reminds me, of course, that even doctors can meet the same inevitable fate of becoming patients. When I tried to tend to the diabetes my father developed later in life, I thought of that woman’s shaking, pale face. And when I looked at his limbs - a double amputee, and recognized he was in renal failure, I thought of how he fought for a life, when she could not fight for her own.And I thought of how in his twilight years, he was eXperiencing the same discomfort and dis-ease he had so seamlessly kept at bay for everyone else. But even so, I knew we were lucky, my family. We could afford my father’s insulin. We could afford to do what it took to take care of him.。
1They chose to use their platform to ensure not just that their son would be remembered, but that a new university, built in his name, would exist to benefit others.Since the Stanfords didnt have the opportunity to give their son the future he had envisioned, they devoted themselves to creating a university that would produce both fundamental knowledge and apply that knowledge to tackle real-world problems – but that that would also help countless other students build their own platforms and launch their own lives of purpose. As Stanford graduates, you have built and earned your platform.Your education and experiences here will give you opportunities to pursue your interests and follow your own unique path.Of course, youve worked tremendously hard to achieve this success. And I know that it hasnt always been easy. Each of you has had to overcome obstacles to get to where you are today. And all of that hard work – the midnight coffee breaks; the final exams; the hours spent in the library, or the studio, or the laboratory – have brought you here today. And you havent stopped there.Youve thrown yourself into activities and experiences here –whether sports or the arts, student government or the student newspape r, service work, sketch comedy, the Band, or…or –especially as Ive seen in the last week – fountain hopping! These experiences have enriched your lives, and they, too, have brought you to where you are today. 2You have a world of opportunity in front of you, and it is for you to decide what to do with this platform that youve worked so hard to earn.No matter what field you enter after graduation, you have the opportunity to use your gifts to make a difference in the world. This can feel daunting, at the outset of your post-Stanford life. Some of you may know exactly what contribution you want to make in the world, while others may still be searching for your way to make an impact. But whatever you do, whatever profession you pursue or journey you take – whether you become a teacher or a community leader, a lawyer or a physician, an engineer or an artist, or a scholar or a scientist, or a mother or father, a caregiver to the next generation – whatever you make of your life and the opportunities before you, I hope you will use your gifts to change the world for the better.Having a platform also comes with a responsibility. It requires an ongoing process of self-examination and a continual return to your guiding values. You may find, at times, that the path forward is unclear. Or you may realize, in hindsight, that you have made missteps along the way.All of us make mistakes. I certainly do – just ask my wife and kids! All of our lives require self-examination. 3In those moments, it is important to return to our foundational values to guide us forward. For myself, I always return to the founding purpose of this university – that we are here to generate excellence for the sake of all humanity. That idea serves as Stanfords North Star. And that brings me to todays Commencement speaker, Tim Cook.Tim is a brilliant example of someone who has used his platform to achieve a greater impact beyond his own company. He is a clear voice for leading with vision and values to address the challenges and responsibilities that confront society today.A native of Alabama, Tim earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University and then an MBA from Duke University.Tim joined Apple in 1998 and became the companys chief operating officer in 2005. He was named CEO in August 20XX.。

1Thank you. Thank you.Good morning! Good morning, Class of 20xx! You look fabulous!Though many of you may…maybe you feel a little bit tired?Last night, some of you were out to dinner with family. Some of you were up late packing. And some of you went out with classmates and friends. And this is Penn, I have to ask: How many of you managed to do all three?Okay, I thought so! But did anyone here last night find time to turn on the TV…maybe turn it on…to HBO?Are you ready? Are you ready? Its time for a special edition of Game of Thrones!Graduates: All of you today sit on either side of a great divide. To my right: Southern Alliance! Among you are several Great Houses.Arrayed on the field are members of House Engineering! House Nursing! House Wharton! Houses…Houses Medicine to Dental; Law to…Law to Design; SP2 to Education; and Annenberg to Vet! All…all of you to my right form the Southern Alliance! Now, to my left: The Northern Alliance! Your Great…your Great Houses may be fewer…your Great Houses may be fewer, but man, are they big? 2Arrayed on the field, as you can see, are the members…many members of House College! And House Arts and Sciences! All of you…all of you to my left form the Northern Alliance. We have two sides, and spoiler alert: were going to do battle. But instead of a battle with spears, this will be a Battle of Cheers.Whoops! Who left a Starbucks cup here? Not supposed to be here! Oh well, oh well…. Well figure that out later.Im…Im going to call on each of your Alliances in turn. When I do, you need to make…I hate to ask, I know how hard it is, but you need to make the most noise you can. The side that cheers the loudest wins! Okay? Ready?Okay, lets hear it from the Southern Alliance!Impressive! Impressive! Okay, now lets hear it from the Northern Alliance! Alright! Also …also impressive! Both sides gave it your very best shot. Now it falls to me….But I will not call a winner. Instead, instead, I ask you to consider this a window into the human heart.Listen up. Here we are, proud members of the Penn community – this beloved community. Yet, when called upon, how readily we divide to do battle for our side.Game of Thrones became a global phenomenon for many reasons. We obsess over the characters. We love the dragons and the drama. But its deepest attraction is allegorical. 3In the walls of ice, in the thrones of iron, we see a mirror for our times. We recognize our own world, where too many live for their tribe alone. Where too often, we listen only to those who think, look, and believe as we do.Where the game seems rigged against open and free exploration. We hear too few dissenting voices, and we consider too few conflicting views. But remember: None of this is inevitable. We can glorify our own tribe to the exclusion of others. We can build up our walls, and we can cast down those who are different.Or we can better use the strength in our hearts and the power in our hands. Our many identities and beliefs: We make these our threads. Our diverse backgrounds and goals: They become our loom.。

1Commencement is a milestone—one of life’s landmark occasions, a time when graduates, family members, and friends gather to celebrate past and future. At the University of Michigan, Spring Commencement is a festive, campus-wide event where graduates are recognized by their school or college as a group, and honorary degrees are conferred. In addition to Spring Commencement, which all graduates are welcome to attend, each school, college and campus hold individual ceremonies to celebrate their graduates’ accomplishments.Class of 20xx, Congratulations!I join your professors, family members and friends in expressing my utmost pride as we celebrate your accomplishments as the newest graduates of the University of Michigan.Graduates, you did it!Each one of you earned a place here – and you made the most of it.I know that for many of you, the road to get here was not easy. Perhaps you traversed some potholes along the way.I have it on the highest authority, however, that these potholes are about to be filled, and the roads are going to get fixed …But for those of you who are first-generation students, military veterans, or from communities, cities and towns thatdon’t send many students to Michigan –I hope you are especially relishing this day.As members of the Class of 20xx, all of you have conquered the rigors of our curricula. You exceled in your studies, your research, your advocacy and your service. You found ways to navigate central campus, when we decided to renovate the LS&A building and the Union at the same time. And you even survived a polar vortex – with not one, but TWO, days of canceled classes.Since we are here, you must have used that time to study. 2We live in an era of accelerating change where often as a society and as individuals we seem to be struggling to keep up.Graduation is all about change. And at Michigan that means it’s not only about the change in you, it’s about the changes you will contribute to in society. In the fall of 20xx, when many of you started as undergraduates here at Michigan, our world was a different place.Me Too was not yet a hashtag. The event horizon of a black hole had never been imaged. And midterm voter turnout on university campuses across the country was just 19 percent. Each of these examples, in their own way, demonstrates the often long and difficult path to change. The Me T oo Movement was founded in 20xx by activist and sexual assault survivor Tarana Burke. Burke wanted to provide a place for survivors to tell their stories, for empathy, and for healing. She spent more than a decade persevering and advocating on the behalf of those whose stories are marginalized, or not told at all. Then the idea she started went viral, transforming intoglobal conversation and, we must hope, change. The image of the black hole event horizon presented last month required two years of computer analysis, data from 8 observatories on three continents, and a team of 200 scientists, which included 20xx U-M Electrical Engineering graduate Katie Bouman. We have now seen what had previously been described as un-seeable, and pushed the frontiers of knowledge to the darkest regions of the universe. And during the 20xx midterm election, Tufts University reports that youth turnout increased in every state for which they have data. In 27 states, it rose by double digits.Plus, precincts that serve Big Ten campuses saw their turnout increase by an average of 24 percentage points. This is more than double the increase in nearby areas, indicating that students made their voice heard. Higher turnout was a goal of the Big Ten Voting Challenge. Well done!Choosing to commit to the work needed to make change, and see it through, can produce amazing results – but it can also frustrate.Change doesn’t happen in a straight line. It’s messy. It can take years, or even decades. But when it is founded on principled dedication, collaboration, and hope – all the ingredients are in place. Our campus has wonderful examples. 3Last month we opened our Trotter Multicultural Center on State Street. This inspirational new home devoted to unity, peace and understanding brings together people from all backgrounds, in a building planned and designed in collaboration withstudents. It was an historic change for our campus — and it was made possible by a legacy of student activism. Members of our Black Student Union, past and present, shared their experiences on our campus and their aspirations for a better Michigan. Some are even graduating today. They mobilized their fellow students and called on, and worked with, the university to create the new Trotter. And while our work to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion is far from finished, the University of Michigan is changed for the better.Another member of the Class of 20xx used the power of journalism to create change. In March of 20xx, Kevin Sweitzer wrote an editorial in the Michigan Daily criticizing the name of a house in our West Quad residence hall. Winchell House had been named after a 19th century U-M professor, whose published work supported white supremacy. In 20xx, Kevin submitted a formal request under the process we established to reconsider the names of university spaces. After a review by our prominent committee of historians, humanists, and many other experts, we removed the Winchell name.Kevin is graduating today, from a university changed for the better.CSG President Daniel Greene, who also graduates today, spent much of his time in office advocating for greater affordability, food security, mental health services, and diversity. The results produced by CSG this year include a housing survey, the expansion of a food pantry for students in need, greater mental health awareness, and a plan to help student organizations achieve their full potential. 4As Daniel goes on to Teach for America, he leaves a university that is changed for the better. The changes you have seen on campus and around the globe also provide a roadmap that can serve as a guide to the changes you can create in society.Purposefully contributing to change requires courage, trust, and the willingness to listen and consider many voices. It works best when trust is built by finding common ground, and when we reject the view that it is “us versus them” — that there must be winners and losers. This is how we can overcome the erosion of trust and begin to collaborate to work through differences. It takes courage to open ourselves up to opinions and interpretations we don’t agree with. But it’s also how we learn, sharpen our own arguments, and hone our ability to persuade others.Your time at Michigan has provided a wonderful proving ground to develop your ability to create change. Where else can you seek solutions among such talented scholars, all pursuing knowledge and understanding to advance a quintessentially public mission?U-M is a place where data and evidence matter, where all voices can be heard, and where talented and hard-working students emerge as leaders and best. 5Our passion for change is why we are the nation’s No. 1 public research university. It’s why the discovery process has been a foundational centerpiece of our Michigan DNA for more than 200 years. It’s why we strive, always, to extend our impact beyond the borders of our campus – to the communities we serve, and to the frontiers of human knowledge that now span galaxies. It’s why I hope you are asking, on the day of your graduation, what you can change next. The challenges we face as a society are numerous and complex – from climate change to poverty to conflict between nations. But these and many other challenges can unite us as we strive for change – if we choose the path of courage.Listen to different views.Trust one another.Find common ground. And commit to the discussions and the discoveries that can produce a better world.Class of 20xx, our society is yours to change.Seek out new evidence, develop new methods, and consider many points of view. And choose the path that will make ours a better world – as you Go discover, Go achieve, Go serve, and Go Blue!。

1In my inaugural address, I remarked that just 60 years earlier, my father might not have been served in a D.C. restaurant – at least not certain of them. There were no black CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. Very few black judges. Shoot, as Larry Wilmore pointed out last week, a lot of folks didn’t even think blacks had the tools to be a quarterback. Today, former Bull Michael Jordan isn’t just the greatest basketball player of all time – he owns the team. (Laughter.) When I was graduating, the main black hero on TV was Mr. T. (Laughter.) Rap and hip hop were counterculture, underground. Now, Shonda Rhimes owns Thursday night, and Beyoncé runs the world. (Laughter.) We’re no longer only entertainers, we’re producers, studio executives. No longer small business owners – we’re CEOs, we’re mayors, representatives, Presidents of the United States. (Applause.)Noe, I am not saying gaps do not persist. Obviously, they do. Racism persists. Inequality persists. Don’t worry – I’m going to get to that. But I wanted to start, Class of 20xx, by opening your eyes to the moment that you are in. If you had to choose one moment in history in which you could be born, and you didn’t know ahead of time who you were going to be – what nationality, what gender, what race, whether you’d be rich or poor, gay or straight, what faithyou’d be born into – you wouldn’t choose 100 years ago.You wouldn’t choose the fifties, or the sixties, or the seventies. You’d choose right now. If you had to choose a time to be, in the words of Lorraine Hansberry, "young, gifted, and black" in America, you would choose right now. (Applause.) 2I tell you all this because it’s important to note progress. Because to deny how far we’ve come would do a disservice to the cause of justice, to the legions of foot soldiers; to not only the incredibly accomplished individuals who have already been mentioned, but your mothers and your dads, and grandparents and great grandparents, who marched and toiled and suffered and overcame to make this day possible.I tell you this not to lull you into complacency, but to spur you into action – because there’s still so much more work to do, so many more miles to travel. And America needs you to gladly, happily take up that work. You all have some work to do. So enjoy the party, because you’re going to be busy. (Laughter.)Yes, our economy has recovered from crisis stronger than almost any other in the world. But there are folks of all races who are still hurting – who still can’t find work that pays enough to keep the lights on, who still can’t save for retirement. We’ve still got a big racial gap in economic opportunity. The overall unemployment rate is 5 percent, but the black unemployment rate is almost nine. We’ve still got an achievement gap when black boys and girls graduate high school and college at lower rates than white boys and white girls. Harriet Tubman may be going on the twenty, but we’ve still got a gender gap when a black woman working full-time still earns just 66 percent of what a white man gets paid. (Applause.)We’ve got a justice gap when too many black boys and girls pass through a pipeline from underfunded schools to overcrowded jails. This is one area where things have gotten worse. When I was in college, about half a million people in America were behind bars. Today, there are about 2.2 million. Black men are about six times likelier to be in prison right now than white men. 3Around the world, we’ve still got challenges to solve that threaten everybody in the 21st century – old scourges like disease and conflict, but also new challenges, from terrorism and climate change. So, make no mistake, Class of 20xx – you’ve got plenty of work to do. But as complicated and sometimes intractable as these challenges may seem, the truth is that your generation is better positioned than any before you to meet those challenges, to flip the script. Now, how you do that, how you meet these challenges, how you bring about change will ultimately be up to you. My generation, like all generations, is too confined by our own experience, too invested in our own biases, too stuck in our ways to provide much of the new thinking that will be required. But us old-heads have learned a few things that might be useful in your journey. So with the rest of my time, I’d like to offer some suggestions for how young leaders like you can fulfill your destiny and shape our collective future – bend it in the direction of justice and equality and freedom. 4Graduates of the great Dartmouth Class of 20xx, congratulations! Revel in this moment. It is a milestone. And to the friends and family members gathered to share in this happy occasion, we celebrate you, too, for the love and support you’ve provided to the graduates during their Dartmouth journey! In this 250th year of our beloved College, nostalgia fills ourhearts for our cherished Dartmouth traditions: first-year trips, the homecoming bonfire, Winter Carnival. But today, with the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma in the house, I want to talk about another storied Dartmouth tradition: the arts. The arts have been alive at Dartmouth from the earliest days of the College. Our very first Commencement exercises in 1771 featured an "anthem" composed and set to music and performed by the graduating class. Don’t worry, ’19s – composing an original song is no longer a requirement for earning your degree. The very next year, 1772, featured the first play put on by Dartmouth students, organized by none other than John Ledyard. 5Throughout our history, Dartmouth faculty and graduates have had an outsized impact on the world of the arts. Frost, Geisel, and Orozco in early times; Pilobolus, Romero, Kaling, Rhimes, and Arad in more recent years, just to name a few. And as Gail and I have attended your student concerts and plays, visited your studio art installations, and enjoyed the works of aspiring authors and poets on campus, we actually see the future of Dartmouth’s impact on the art world. At the end of World War II, the famed School for American Craftsmen was born right here on the Dartmouth campus. And in 1962, Dartmouth pioneered a new model for performing arts centers across all of higher education with the opening of the Hop. Not long after, the Dartmouth theater department served as the earliest pathway for women on this campus, some of whom are seated amongst you today as proudly adopted members of the Class of 1969.And today, the Hop, the Black Family Visual Arts Center, and our newly reimagined Hood Museum of Art together serve as the epicenter of artistic creation and expression on our campus and an incredible sourceof fulfillment for all of us.
I. Graduating from College: A New BeginningDear fellow graduates,I stand before you today as a representative of our graduating class, filled with a mix of gratitude, excitement, and a hint of anxiety about the future that lies ahead. It goes without saying that these past few years have not been easyfor any of us. We have had to face numerous challenges, fromacademic pressures to personal struggles, all while figuring out our place in the world. Yet, here we are today, ready to take on thenext chapter of our lives. We must remember that graduation is not just an end, but a new beginning. We have been given the opportunity to pursue our dreams,to make a difference in the world, and to live a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. As we move forward, we must stay true to ourselves and what webelieve in. We must continue to learn and grow, never ceasing tostrive for excellence in all that we do. We must also seekopportunities to give back to our communities, to invest in othersand make a positive impact on those around us.In closing, I want to leave you with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where thereis no path and leave a trail." Let us all forge our own paths and leave a mark on the world that will be remembered long after we are gone.Congratulations, class of [year]. The future is bright, and it isours for the taking.II. The Power of Our DreamsDear friends and family,As we gather here today to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class, I am reminded of the power of our dreams. Each and every one of us had a dream when we first stepped foot on this campus, and today, we have achieved that dream. But what comes next? What happens now that we have reached our goal?I would argue that we must continue to dream. We must continue toset goals for ourselves, to aim high, and to believe in our own potential. It is only through this constant striving that we will continue to make progress, both personally and as a society. One of the most powerful weapons we have in achieving our dreams is our education. Our time in college has prepared us for thechallenges of the real world, equipped us with the skills we need to succeed, and instilled in us a sense of responsibility for the world around us.But our education will mean nothing if we do not use it to make a positive impact on the world. We must take what we have learned and put it into action, using our talents and abilities to make theworld a better place. In closing, I want to leave you with a quote from Walt Disney: "All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them." Let us all have the courage to pursue our dreams, and to use oureducation and talents to make the world a better place. Congratulations, graduates. The world is waiting for us.III. Embracing Failure: The Key to SuccessDear graduates,As we stand here today, we are all reminded of the many successes we have achieved throughout our time in college. But what about our failures? What about the times we fell short, missed a deadline, or failed an exam?It is easy to dwell on our failures, to feel discouraged and defeated. However, it is important to remember that failure is not the opposite of success; it is a necessary part of the journey. Without failure, we would not learn, grow, or achieve anything worthwhile.Embracing failure is the key to success. It allows us to take risks, to try new things, and to learn from our mistakes. As we moveforward into the next chapter of our lives, we will undoubtedly face many more obstacles and setbacks. But we must not be afraid of failure; rather, we must learn to embrace it and use it as a toolfor growth and improvement.Of course, none of this is easy. It takes courage, determination, and a willingness to persevere even in the face of adversity. But if there is one thing that college has taught us, it is that we are capable of great things if we put our minds to it.In closing, I want to leave you with a quote from Thomas Edison: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Let us all embrace failure, and use it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and ultimately succeed in all that we do.Congratulations, class of [year]. The world is waiting for us.IV. The Importance of GratitudeDear graduating class,As we stand here today, looking back on our time in college, I am struck by the immense gratitude I feel for all that we have accomplished together. It is easy to get caught up in the stresses and pressures of daily life, but I believe that a spirit ofgratitude is what truly sets us apart as human beings. When we recognize all that we have to be thankful for, we are ableto approach life with a sense of joy, wonder, and purpose. We are also better able to connect with those around us, to give back toour communities, and to make a positive impact in the world.I would encourage each of us to take a few moments every day to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. Whether it is the support of our loved ones, the privilege of a college education, or the beauty of the natural world, there is always something to be grateful for.As we move forward into the next chapter of our lives, we must also seek opportunities to give back to others. We must use our talents, abilities, and resources to make a positive impact in the world, whether that be through volunteer work, community service, or simply being there for someone who needs us.In closing, I want to leave you with a quote from Melody Beattie: "Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." Let us all approach our lives with a spirit of gratitude, and use our gifts and talents to make the world a better place.Congratulations, class of [year]. The future is bright, and we are ready to take on whatever comes our way.V. The Value of Hard WorkDear fellow graduates,As we gather here today to celebrate our accomplishments, I am reminded of the importance of hard work. None of us would be here today without a relentless commitment to our studies, persistent effort, and the ability to persevere even in the face of adversity. We have all faced our fair share of challenges, from difficult exams to long hours in the library. But it is through these challengesthat we have learned to push ourselves, to develop the skills weneed to succeed, and to cultivate a sense of resilience that will serve us well in the future. However, hard work is not just about achieving success for ourselves. It is also about contributing to the world in a meaningful way. We must use the skills and knowledge we have gained through our studies to make a positive impact in the world, to contribute to our communities, and to help those in need.As we move on to the next chapter of our lives, we must rememberthat hard work is not an option; it is a necessity. We must bewilling to put in the time, effort, and dedication required toachieve our goals and make our dreams a reality. In closing, I want to leave you with a quote from Vince Lombardi: "The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have appliedthe best of ourselves to the task at hand." Let us all apply thebest of ourselves to the task at hand, and use our education and talents to make the world a better place.Congratulations, class of [year]. The future is bright, and we are ready for whatever comes our way.。

1Tim Cook addresses Tulane University graduates at Commencement 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on May 18, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Josh Brasted/Getty Images On Saturday, Apple CEO Tim Cook, who was recently acclaimed as an even better leader than the legendary Steve Jobs, carved out a morning from his very busy schedule to deliver a commencement speech for the 2019 graduates of Tulane University in New Orleans.Back in February, when Tulane confirmed Cook as its commencement speaker for this year, the universitys president Mike Fitts touted that the Apple CEO, who enjoys the reputation asone of the worlds most workaholic bosses, “repre sents the kind of success we hope all of our graduates can attain.”But as soon as Cook stepped up to the podium on Saturday, his message to Tulanes graduates became the very opposite of what was expected of him—instead of presenting himself as a role model for the young graduates in the audience, Cook encouraged them to challenge older generations successes and to find their own. 2“In some important ways, my generation has failed you,” Cook said. “We spent too much time debating, too focused on the fight and not enough on progress.”“You dont need to look far to find an example of that failure,” he continued, pointing to an example that no one understands better than those living in the natural disaster-dogged New Orleans: climate change.“T his problem doesnt get easier based on who wins an election. Its about who has won lifes lottery and has the luxury of ignoring this issue, and who stands to lose everything. The costal communities, including some right here in Louisiana, that are already making plans to leave behind the places theyve called homefor generations and head for higher ground… When we talk about climate change, I challenge you to look for those who have the most to lose and find the real, true empathy that comes from something shared. When you do that, the political noise dies down and you can feel your feet planted on solid ground.” 3Cooks most important message actually went beyond climate change. Expanding the discussion to how young people can filter out the “political noise” and find their real goals, he encouraged them to fight against what todays tech giants—including Apple—want them to see and regain their own perspective.“If you find yourself spending more time fighting than getting to work, stop and ask you rself, Who benefits from all the chaos?” Cook said. “There are some who would like to believe that the only way you can be strong is by bulldozing those who disagree with you… We forget sometimes that our pre-exiting beliefs have their own force of gravity. Today, certain algorithms pull toward you things that you already know, believe or like. And they push away everything else. Push back! It shouldnt be this way.”
