Unit 8 Coping with an Educational Problem
Part I Pre-reading Task Listen to the recording two or three times and then think over the following questions: 1. What was the teacher's purpose in asking his class the riddle? 2. What can you learn about Little Geoffrey from his answer to the riddle? Was he used to trying to think clearly? Had he formed the habit of making good use of his brain? 3. Is the story related to the theme of the unit — coping with an educational problem? In what way?
To drive this message home to such young Americans, I have a humble suggestion: a movie, or TV series, dramatizing just how difficult it was for this country to get where it is — and how easily it could all be lost. I offer the following fable. As the story opens, our hero, Kevin Hanley 1990, a 17-year-old high school senior, is sitting in his room, feeling bitter. His parents insist he study for his European history test. He wants to go shopping for headphones for his portable CD player. The book he is forced to read — The Wealth of Nations — puts him to sleep. Kevin dreams it is 1835, and he is his own great-great-great-grandfather at 17, a peasant in County Kerry, Ireland. He lives in a small hut and sleeps next to a pig. He is always hungry and must search for food. His greatest wish is to learn to read and write so he might get a job as a clerk. With steady wages, he would be able to feed himself and help his family. But Hanley's poverty allows no leisure for such luxuries as going to school. Without education and money, he is powerless. His only hope lies in his children. If they are educated, they will have a better life.
全新版大学英语(第二版)综合教程 第1册 Unit 8 Fable of the Lazy Teenager
Before Reading >> FableI. A Brief Introduction to FableThe term fable refers to a short story in which animals or inanimate objects speak and behave like humans, usually to give a moral point. The term comes from the Latin fabula, “a telling.”The greatest teller of fables was Aesop. He was believed to be a Greek slave who lived in the 6th century B.C. Another great teller of fables was Jean de La Fontaine. He wrote in France in the 17th century. La Fontaine based many of his fables on those of Aesop. Some of their best-known fables are The Lion and the Mouse, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Fox and the Grapes, The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf, The Fox and the Crow, The Dove and the Ant, and The Fox and the Stork. In the Chinese language, some idioms come from fables such as The Frog in the Shallow Well (井底之蛙), His Spear against His Shield (自相矛盾), Making His Mark (刻舟求剑), Ostrich Logic (掩耳盗铃) and Blessing or Bane (塞翁失马).Aesop (620?~560? B.C.) ancient Greek writer of fablesJean de La Fontaine (1621~1695) French writerII. Two Famous FablesHere are some pictures about two famous fables. One is an Aesop’s fable; the other is a Chinese one. In small groups, students are required to talk about the pictures and think of the following questions.1. What are the names of the fables?2. What lessons can we draw from the fables? The Fox and the GrapesOne day a fox passed under a vine. From the vine a lot of grapes were hanging. He was very hungry and thirsty. He said, “What a fine vine it is! The grapes on the vine look very nice and sweet.”The color of the grapes was green. The grapes were very big. And the grapes were so big and beautiful that the fox wanted to eat them. The fox said, “I am thirsty and hungry. I want to eat the grapes now.”The fox jumped. The grapes were too high. He tried everything to get the grapes. But it was in vain.At last the fox said, “The grapes are too sour to eat. I don’t want to get the poor grapes.”Making His MarkA man from the state of Chu was crossing a river. In the boat, his sword fell into the water. Immediately he made a mark on the boat.“This is where my sword fell off,” he said. When the boat stopped moving, he went into the water to look for his sword at the place where he had marked the boat. The boat had moved but the sword had not. Is this not a very foolish way to look for a sword?III. Some Famous English Sayings from FablesHere are some famous sayings in English. You are required to answer the following questions and then tell each fable as briefly as possible.1. What are the Chinese equivalents of these sayings?2. From which fable does each saying come?- Sour grapes.- Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.- One good turn deserves another.- Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.Sour grapes. It means “酸葡萄” in Chinese. This saying comes from the fable The Fox and the Grapes. In it the fox cannot reach the grapes. Disappointed, the animal says that the grapes are sour and that they are “not fit for a gentleman’s eating.”Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.It means “杀鸡取卵” in Chinese. T his saying comes from the fable The Goose with the Golden Eggs. In it the owner of the goose is not satisfied with one golden egg a day. He cuts the goose open to see if there is gold inside. One good turn deserves another. It means “善有善报” in Chinese. Thi s saying comes from the fable The Dove and the Ant. In it a dove saves an ant from drowning in a river. Later the ant saves the dove’s life by stinging a hunter in the foot, making him miss his aim at the dove.Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatc hed.It means “蛋未孵别先数小鸡” in Chinese. This saying comes from the fable The Maid and the Pail of Milk. In it a girl carries a pail of milk on her head. She dreams about the eggs she will buy when she sells the milk. The eggs will hatch; then she will sell the chickens. With the money she has earned, she will buy fine clothes for herself. Thinking about the new clothes, the girl becomes so happy that she merrily tosses her head and spills the milk. Before Reading >> Adam Smith and The Wealth of NationsI. Adam Smithi. A Brief Introduction to Adam SmithAdam Smith (1723~1790): British philosopher and economistAdam Smith, economist and philosopher (哲学家), was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1723. At Glasgow University he became a professor of logic (逻辑学) (1751) and moral (道德) philosophy (1752~1763). As a tutor to the Duke of Buccleuch he traveled the Continent from 1764 to 1766. In 1776 he moved to Edinburgh as commissioner (专员) of customs for Scotland. He died there in 1790. He is considered the father of modern economic theory. His famous workThe Wealth of Nations points out that labor is the only source of a nation’s wealth.ii. Chronology of Adam Smith— 1723Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.— 1737 ~ 1746Educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford.— 1748 ~ 1751Gave lectures on rhetoric (修辞学) and belles-lettres (纯文学) in Edinburgh.— 1752 ~ 1764Appointed professor of moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow.— 1759His first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, was published.— 1764 ~ 1766Traveled France and Switzerland as tutor to the Duke of Buccleuch and met Turgot and Necker in Paris and discussed their economic ideas.— 1766 ~ 1776Lived in Kirkcaldy preparing The Wealth of Nations.— 1778Appointed commissioner (专员) of customs and went to live in Edinburgh.— July 17, 1790Died.II. The Wealth of NationsThis is an important work of economic and social theory by Adam Smith, published in 1776. Its full title was An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. In it he analyzed the relationship between work and the production of a nation’s wealth. His conclusion was that the best economic situation results from encouraging free enterprise (an economic system in which there is open competition in business and trade, and no government control). This idea has had a great influence on economic theories since and it formed the basis of the economic policies of the Conservative government in Britain in the 1980s.Before Reading >> U.C.L.A.U.C.L.A. stands for University of California at Los Angeles. Before you read it, let me tell you something about its author, Stephen Hawking.Hawking is perhaps the most well-known scientist since Einstein. Like Einstein his work tackles the big questions, questions such as How did the universe begin? Why is the universe the way it is? and How will it end? He is now working on what is sometimes known as the 'theory of everything.' Among other things, this promises to explain what caused the Big Bang that started the universe. But it is not simply the power of Hawking's mind that has led to his fame. For what many people find most striking about him is the contrast between the strength of his mind and the weakness of his body. For for many years Hawking has suffered from an illness that has left him unable to move and to speak normally.Born in England in 1942, Hawking had a normal childhood, and it was not until he was a student at university that his illness started to affect him. Hospital tests showed he was suffering from a disease that weakens control over the muscles. The disease gets worse with time and there is no known cure. But Hawking did not lose heart. As he says, "although there was a cloud hanging over my future, I found, to my surprise, that I was enjoying life more than before. I began to make progress with my research, and I got engaged to a girl called Jane Wilde. That engagement changed my life. It gave me something to live for."Hawking started research at Cambridge and went on to hold the same post that another great scientist, Newton, once held. Over the years his condition has worsened, but even when he finally lost the ability to speak, he managed to get round the problem. He now uses a computer that enables him to select words which are then turned into speech. "The only trouble," the English scientist says, "is that it gives me an American accent!"- 102 - Appendix IPart II Text AText Organization2. 1) The importance of the teaching of science in schools. 2) The role mass media can play, especially what television can do.Vocabularyinquired in terms of tend precise grasped sufficientconvey in two minds Winning the match today has ensured their team a place in the Cup Final. Computers, for example, have provided some with the comfort of working from home while at the same time throwing others out of work as their jobs are automated. In the future changes are likely to be even much greater as science reaches out to shape life itself. New organisms (有机体) are already being engineered. New genetically modified crops promise benefits from higher yields and less use of harmful chemicals. But once again we cannot be sure that science will only change our lives for the better. The possibility remains that some modern Frankenstein may carelessly or deliberately let loose a new and- 106-Appendix Idangerous form of life. However, we should have sufficient faith in the good sense of the public to believe that we could prevent this from happening.(146 words)Unit 4Part I Pre-reading TaskScript for the recording:What you are about to hear is an interview with Dr Lee Hertz, the director of a scientific laboratory in Stanford University, California.Interviewer: Dr. Hertz:Interviewer: Dr. Hertz:Interviewer: Dr. Hertz:Interviewer: Dr. Hertz: Interviewer: Dr. Hertz:Interviewer:What does the expression the American Dream mean to you?I guess in one way it's the dream of my grandparents. They turned their backson poverty in Poland and set out with high hopes for a new life in America. So the American Dream means getting out of poverty? Then it did. However, when they got to America, they realized that the dream wasn't going to happen, that the streets were not paved with gold and they hadto struggle to make a living. So the dream became the chance for their childrento succeed.Through?Through hard work and giving their kids an education. They thought that through education their children would have the choice of doing what they wanted. That basically life could be what you made it.And do you believe that?Well, America does give some people the opportunity to be what they want to be. Why just some people? Isn't the American Dream an idea everyone can believe in? Yes, but only because our government wants us to believe it. You could say that the American Dream has been used to support the capitalist system. It keepsmost of the population working and spending their money.How?AppendixI107-Dr. Hertz:Interviewer: Dr. Hertz:Well, all the time TV shows that the dream of a good life can be reached through money. Advertising tells you to buy and buy so that finally you will get there and the dream will come true.So you're saying it's the dream that makes the system work? Yes, because people become gripped by the need to move up in the world, they have to reach the top. They are never satisfied with what they have. The American Dream is at the end of the rainbow. It's not simply about having enough money to buy the things you need. It's about reaching the level of all the other people who have the money to buy more than you can afford. The American Dream may be in your head, but to find it you have to reach into your pocket.Part II Text AText OrganizationMain Events1)Tony worked as a help at Mr. Crawford's house.2)Tony got a job clearing snow at Mr. Crawford's factory.3)Tony learned to become a skilled worker.4)Tony bought a house with Mr. Crawford's help.5)Tony bought a farm and sent for his family in Italy. Reading Comprehension(1)The U.S. Department of Labor statistics ( 统计)indicates that there is an oversupply of college-trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already there is an overabundance ( 过多 ) of teachers, engineers, physicists and other specialists. Yet colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren' t there. The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary(临时的) jobs which do not require a college degree. These "temporary' jobs have a habit of becoming permanent(永久的).On the other hand, there is a tremendous need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians, mechanics, and TV repairmen. These people have more work than they can handle and their annual(每年的) incomes are often higher than those of college graduates. The old difference that white -collar workers make a better living than blue-collar workers no longer holds true. The reason for this situation is the traditional myth(神话)that a collegedegree is a passport to bright future. Parents begin telling their children this myth before they are out of school. Under this pressure the kids fall in line. Whether they want to go to college or not doesn' t matter. Everybody should go to college. One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there. Of the 60 percent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up.1. What do the U.S. Department of Labor statistics show? _______.A. This is no longer true; the number of people in their seventies and eighties is steadily growing, and many of these people are still very active in society.Medical progress, coupled with a greater knowledge of personal care and hygiene( 卫生) is a major reason for this change. But the longer life-span(寿命), despite its obvious value, has given a new problem to today's world. Many older people can take care of themselves, but many others can't. More importantly, their children cannot take care of them in their homes as once the common practice. Nursing homes have been opened to provide such care.A nursing home is a long-care organization for people too sick or weak to care for themselves. These establishments are not hospitals, but residents may need medical attention at any time.Today there are about 22,000 nursing homes in America housing 1.2 million men and women. Eighty-five percent of the residents are more than 65 years old. They are fed and cared for, and limited activities are available for those who are able to move about. Except for reading and watching television, however, there is often little for residents to do. His conclusion was that the best economic situation results from encouraging free enterprise (an economic system in which there is open competition in business and trade, and no government control). This idea has had a great influence on economic theories since and it formed the basis of the economic policies of the Conservative government in Britain in the 1980s.
