We all long for friendship, but how to make a friend? “The best time to make a friend is before you need one.” Joy Steven said. The following are some tips for you.

Dharavi is one of the world’s largest slums (贫民窟). It is also a center of industrial production. A tour company is highlighting life in Dharavi, a mini-city within India’s financial centre, Mumbai.
There are about one million people living in this less than three square kilometers place. The resident (居民) Niyamath Khan, 70, recalled the great change of what was once a small fishing village. “Fifty years ago, this was an open space—now there are so many people here,”Khan said.
One organization gives outsiders a closer look of life inside this Mumbai neighborhood through walking tours.
Reality Tours and Travel CEO Stephanie Hays said, “Visitors are surprised at what they see.
There are hospitals, there are schools, and there are businesses. There is industry, there is everything in here, and I think people are shocked by that. They are shocked by the wide streets running through it. I think for me, the industry is what makes Dharavi different.”
Located within the heart of Mumbai, Dharavi is a city within a city. It is an industrial center that generates more than $650 million a year. The slum is home to more than 10,000 single-room factories.
Reality Tours and Travel gives 80 percent of its profits back to the slum, which helps teach residents English and computer skills.
Last year, 10,000 people, mostly foreigners, took the tour, but even Mumbai residents like Kiran Jadhav took the tour too. “For me, Dharavi was just a place where poor people were staying. I never thought it was a place with so much industry and work, so I was amazed with that,” Jadhav said.

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter whether the words come from someone else or ourselves — the positive (good) and negative (bad) effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually t oo embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be angry.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-respect and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
62. There is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______.
A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves
C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone
63. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______.
A. praise ourselves
B. remind (提醒) ourselves
C. relax ourselves
D. free ourselves
64. The author would probably hold the view that ___________.
A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B. negative words may encourage us to make more progress
C. people tend to remember friendly words
D. it is better to think twice before talking to others
65. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Self-talk always has positive effects on us.
B. We are fond of admitting talking to ourselves.
C. Nice words help to build up one’s confidence(自信).
D. The effect of good words lasts longer than bad words.

Boys are not so good at English when there are girls in their class, a research student said. This finding disagrees with the widely held belief that girls always have a good influence on boys in school.
Boys do best with as few girls as possible in English lessons at primary and secondary schools, Steven Proud, a research student at Bristol University, told the Royal Economic Society’s conference.
But when it comes to math and science, both boys and girls at primary schools achieve up to a tenth of a grade higher when there is a greater percentage of girls in the class, Proud found.
Proud kept a record of boys’ and girls’ test results at the ages of 7, 11, and 16 in 16,000
schools in England. He studied the test scores to see whether the percentage of girls made a difference to the results of both boys and girls in math, science and English.
Boys always perform worse when the number of girls they study English with increases, which is especially the case at primary schools. Proud also found that girls are unaffected by the number of boys in their English class.
Proud said boys may do worse in English when there is high proportion(比例) of girls in their class because they think that the girls are better than them. It could also be that teachers use teaching styles more appropriate(适合) to girls when there are more girls than boys in the class.
Proud argues that his results show boys should be taught English in single-sex classes.
However, Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at the University of Buckingham, said, “Boys m ay be discouraged by how well girls are doing in English, but you can’t say that it means boys and girls should be separated. It has very little practical importance to schools.”
