Teaching Plan
Title: Lesson 24 It could be worse
Teaching material analysis:
This listening material is a short passage extracted from New Concepts English book 2, and it is suitable for the elementary English learners. This text is a short story about losing money and regaining the losing money to expressing the honesty between people. Learners can get new words, simple grammar knowledge and holistic meaning to improve their comprehensive competence.
Student analysis:
The most of elementary English learners are interested in learning English. 1. They are positive and confidence in accepting new knowledge. Most of them can understand and change ideas of simple topics and short stories in real situation. 2. However, it is hard for them to concentrate attention on learning English for a long time and can not completely understand the holistic text meaning and the person’s attitude from different voice and intonation.
Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge Objectives:
Most of students are able to recognize, pronounce and get the
meaning of key vocabulary: manager, upset, sympathetic,
complain, wicked, contain, honesty. 80% students are able to grasp what is past tense and how to use it in describing short stories.
2. Skills Objectives:
Most of students are able to grasp the skill of predicting the idea of the text through the contextual knowledge and verbal aids, etc.
Students are able to get the gist and take notes in listening.
3. Affect:
After learning the listening text students will develop the
awareness of honesty in their lives.
4. Learning Strategies:
Cognize strategies: guide students to realize the gist of the text
and get the attitude of honesty to others.
Resource strategies: guide students to get the meaning of new
words by visual aids and dictionary and find more learning
material in Internet.
Key points and difficulties:
1. Teaching Key Points
Guide students to get person’s attitude from their voice and
intonation and understand the main ideas of this short story
through various tasks and activities organized by teacher.
2. Teaching Difficult Points
Focus students’ attention and motivated them through various
tasks and activities like group work, role play, etc. Involve
emotion and attitudes honesty into output activity, role play. Teaching Aids:
1. Visual aids in learning the new words: pictures
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 pre-listening
1. Setting the scene: ask students to discuss their feelings if they
lost $50 or they found $50 that somebody lost and what will they do then. (Schemata and contextual knowledge)
2. Use the picture and words strategies like synonyms, antonym
and word series to recognize the pronunciation and the meaning of the new words. (Bottom -up)
Step 2 while-listening
1.Listen for the gist: (Top-down)
Divide the text into two parts. Ask students to get the main idea of the first part without the ending of the story after quick listening and predicting what’s the end of the story?
2.Taking-notes: (Input)
Listen the whole text again and ask students pay attention to the time, address, persons, and events and taking notes of the
information to examine their predicting.
3.Listen and fill the black (group work) (Bottom-up)
Hand out the blacking filling and ask students pay attention to the right form of the verbs. Then ask students check answer in third listening.

Step 3 post-listening
1. Discuss the open-ended question: How do you think the
manager and the girl? / What will you do if you are that manager/ girl? (Schemata and output)
2. Role Play (Group work, 4 students each group)
Group students in role play to imitate person’s voice and
intonation to help them understand emotion and attitude and
realize the awareness of honesty. (Output)
Step 4 Sum-up
Summarize the new words, grammar, strategies using in learning the new words and listening process.
Homework:
1. Review the key vocabulary
2. Write a personal story of yourself in past tense and sharing it
with others in next class.
