他出生在苏格兰海伦斯堡一个牧师的家里,从小就表现出一个发明家的天才。
贝尔德曾就读于格拉斯哥大学及皇家技术学院。
第一次世界大战期间,贝尔德表示自己不适合去军队服役,成了一家大电力公司的负责人。
1924年,贝尔德首次用收集到的旧收音器材、霓虹灯管、扫描盘、电热棒和可以间断发电的磁波灯和光电管等,做了一连串试验来传送图像。
然而这些试验材料实在太破旧了,以致每次试验都要损坏、更新一些零件。
经过上百次的试验后,贝尔德总结了大量的经验。
1925年10月2日清晨,当贝尔德再一次发动起房间里的机器时,随著马达转速的增加,他终于从另一个房间的映射接收机里,清晰地收到了比尔──一个表演用的玩偶的脸。
