A woman shows us that it’s never too late to get your degree. Johnson, a 79-year-old grandmother, is graduating from the University of Maryland University College(UMUC) with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management.
Her journey towards her college degree actually began back in 1962 when she attended Morgan State University in Baltimore. She went there for 2 years, but put her studies on hold to start a family with her husband James. They ended up having three sons together–all of them college graduates. “After they graduated from college, my oldest son decided to give me a computer,” Johnson sai d. “Well, it's time for me to go back and get my degree.”
After finishing her job in the government in 2009, she was admitted to the University of Maryland University College in their online program. Her thought to return to school came after seeing her friends and old classmates at Morgan State. “They stayed there and completed their course there and that encouraged me,” Johnson said. “I said I want to go back and do the same thing.”
There were some problems Johnson had to deal with in her new path in life. She would not be able to transfer the credits(转学分) she earned from Morgan State over to UMUC. Even though she was given a computer, she was not good at it. But that did not stop her from reaching her goal.
For anyone else who wanted to go back to college after long absence, Johnson would encourage it. “You might need a teacher at times,” she said. “I think it’s a very good idea. That’s what you want to do. That’s what I wanted to do.” What’s next for this grandmother? She’s not quite sure. However, UMUC has advised her to get her master’s degree.

I am a working woman with a secret life: I keep house. An off-an-on lawyer and professor in public,in private I launder and clean, cook and devote serious time and energy to a domestic(家务的)routine, not so different from my grandmothers
did as "housewives."When I want a good read,I reach for my collection of old housekeeping handbooks.I enjoy housekeeping and the comforts it provides.
I have almost entirely hidden this passion for housekeeping though I am writing a long story about it.No one meeting me for the first time would doubt that I spend my time knitting and remembering household facts.I knew I would not want this information about me to get around. After all,I belong to the first generation of the women who worked more than they stayed home.
Being viewed as over domestic can get you socially ostracized. When I made hand-rolled pasta(意大利面)for a dinner,I learned the hard way that some guests will find this annoying,as they do not feel comfortable eating a meal that they regard as the product of too much trouble. When my son was in nursery school,I made the mistake of spending a few hours sewing for him a Halloween dressing, receiving hard stares of many fellow parents who had bought a Batman or Esmeralda costume. Many times my courage in writing the story failed me when painful silences followed my confession (坦白)about the long book,"NO,not a history of housework,an explanation of it—a practical book on how you make the bed and make a comfortable home."I managed to hold on partly because not everyone responded with that stare;there was support as well. And I was struck that no one responded with coldness. The topic was clearly hot-too hot for some people to handle, heartwarming to others.

Hard to believe that that something as simple as making a pizza can change a life. But that’s exactly what’s happening behind the walls of the Cook County Jail(监狱).
It’s all part of a program called Recipe for Change. The man behind the program is well-known Chicago Chef(大厨) Bruno Abate. Besides running his own restaurant, Abate spends 5 days a week in jail teaching prisoners the art of pizza and change. “The prisoners are human. They deserve a chance and they deserve to change their life,” Abate said. And that’s one reason he started his Recipe for Change three years ago.
And in the Cook County Jail, help comes in the from of pizza. Chef Abate and his team donate their time to teach
