BBC英语听力2012年01月合辑(文本+翻译):BBC01053The French foreign minister Alain Juppé says the European Union is on track to impose an embargo on Iran's oil exports. The Iranian government gains half of its revenue from the export of crude oil. Here's James Reynolds .法国外交部长阿兰·朱佩说欧盟准备对伊朗的石油出口实施禁运。

伊朗政府一半的收入来源于原油出口。

James Reynolds报道。

The EU is going after Iran where it really hurts. It's targeting Iran's oil exports. France's foreign minister Alain Juppé has told a news conference that he hopes the EU will impose an embargo on Iran's oil exports. The move is expected to be announced at an EU foreign ministers' meeting to be held in Brussels at the end of January. These potential new measures target oil which is at the heart of Iran's economy. Iran's state gets more than half of its revenues through the export of crude oil. At the moment, the EU buys around 17% of Iran's oil exports. If Europe does stopping buying, Iran will have to turn to countries in Asia and those countries will demand a discount.欧洲此举指向伊朗石油出口,直击伊朗要害。

Mrs Clinton said the United States and Japan shared an interest in a peaceful, stable transition in North Korea. The North Korean government has called on citizens to rally behind the son of Kim Jong-il. State media described the son, Kim Jong-un, as the "great successor".美国与其东亚友邦商谈有关朝鲜领导人金正日去世一事。

CNN英语听力2012年02月合辑(文本+翻译):20120224And that wasn't his first time in space. John Glenn was one of NASA's original astronauts. He's been the center of a lot of attention right now, because 50 years ago yesterday he made history. The light is on.A miracle.Godspeed, John Glenn. FiveAs that rocket launched into the sky, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. In fact, he circled the globe three times during the five-hour mission. It may have happened half a century ago, but Glenn says that famous flight is one he'll never forget.I guess I've recalled it quite often over the past 50 years, and that's kept it fresh, but it was such an impressive thing at the time, that it's indelibly imprinted on my memory, and I can recall those days very, very well.Today is Tuesday. You already knew that, but did you know that it's Fat Tuesday? That means it's also Mardi Gras, which means Fat Tuesday in French. And no matter what you call it, it falls on the day before the religious observance of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday. And in cities like New Orleans, Mardi Gras is a huge celebration. You'll see parades with floats, marching bands and people in costume. New Orleans hosted its first Mardi Gras parade in 1837. The floats started showing up about 20 years later, and typically more than a million people come out to attend the city's Mardi Gras celebrations.Next up, the bright lights of the big city -- you might have seen the neon displays in New York or maybe even Las Vegas, but in this case, we're talking about Hong Kong. Now some residents say all that light from businesses and advertisements can boost a city's image or even make the streets safer. But not everyone thinks brighter is better. Richard Quest has this illuminating report. There are lights bigger lights and then there's Hong Kong. The world's big cities offer culture, convenience and a cosmopolitan way of life.Living in a city, especially like this, can be anything but easy. Property prices are some of the highest in the world. The city's battle with air pollution is well known. With so much development, there's also the noise pollution. Now an entirely different problem -- it's trying to live in a city of lights, lots of lights.Bustling with business in the heart of Hong Kong (ph), night becomes day when thelights get switched on. This is about as bad as it gets. And remember, there are people living up there, trying to sleep, if they can.Professor Henry Chung has been studying light pollution for more than a decade, and says not only is excessive light a real nuisance, it's a waste of energy. So what would you do? Would you switch them all off?It is a good idea. But, of course, we have to strike a balance. That's why I think the government has to do something. The legislation tried to control the maximum brightness produced by all these lights and check the brightness around the area. That is the best way to control light pollution.Well, there's been debate. There's currently no regulations in place to curb light pollution. While the city's glistening skyline's been a draw for tourists for years, now even Hong Kong's chief executive recognizes action needs to be taken. We realize that we have to do something about it. You look at the commercial areas, it's really bright. I think it become offensive at times, and we are now introducing virtually regulation restriction to make sure people do have a quiet night and not be disturbed too brightly in lights. And, finally, if you like bacon, you're going to love today's "Before We Go" segmentBecause that's the main course of this annual Iowa event that attracts thousands of people. It's Baconfest. Now where the popular product isn't just for breakfast. There's bacon for lunch, bacon for dinner. And for dessert, you bet your bacon. Cupcakes and brownies with bacon baked right in. They even offer life-size bacon. OK, that actually may be just a guy in a costume. He was probably trying to ham it up or hog all of the attention, but the true star was the bacon, and the "skillet" takes to prepare it in such interesting ways. We're just a little surprised an event like this was held on Saturday. You'd think the best time for Baconfest would be on a "Fryday." All right. We're done pigging out on puns. Enjoy the rest of your day. For CNN, I'm Natisha Lance.他早已不是第一次进入太空。

CNN英语听力2012年01月合辑(文本+翻译):20120110Straits are narrow passageways that connect two bodies of water. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. That land to the north? That`s Iran.About 20 percent of the world`s oil goes through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Navy also uses it to move ships through the region. American officials have dismissed a threat from Iran to close the strait. It`s part of the recent tension between the countries that Chris Lawrence covers in this report.Iran test-fired a new radar-evading missile Monday and announced a step forward in its nuclear program. Some say it`s Iran`s way of firing back at President Obama`s new sanctions, which could make it virtually impossible for Iran to sell its crude oil.Iran is trying to say that outside pressure isn`t going to soften its behavior.Analyst Karim Sadjadpour has interviewed dozens of senior Iranian officials and clerics. The missile test followed Iran`s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, where 20 percent of the world`s oil passes. It also announced it had produced its own uranium fuel rods, all as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prepares to visit Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Cuba. Some Republican contenders see a direct threat in Iran and its surrogates forging ties in the United States` back yard.I`m very concerned about the militants ocialists and their -- and the radical Islamists joining together, bonding together.Right now, Hezbollah, which is working throughout Latin America -- in Venezuela, in Mexico, throughout Latin America, which poses a very significant and an imminent threat to the United States of America.Thank you, Governor. But some analysts say there`s little appetite for Iranian ideology in South America. We unnecessarily exaggerate the extent of Iran`s global influence.Sadjadpour says Iran doesn`t have the naval ships needed to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. And it needs those shipping lanes as much as anyone. He sees Iran as more bluster than battle-ready.But there is a concern that the hardliners in Tehran will try to provoke some typeof military attack on themselves for domestic political expediency, and that`s a trap which the United States and Israel should be careful about walking into.Today`s Shoutout goes out to Ms. McClain`s students at St. Joseph Regional School in Summers Point, New Jersey.Where would you find the International Date Line? You know what to do. Does it run through the Atlantic Ocean, China`s Gobi Desert, the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Tranquility? You`ve got three seconds, go.The International Date Line runs through the Pacific Ocean. That`s your answer, and that`s your Shoutout. Some interesting facts about the International Date Line: one, it separates days on the calendar. Cross the line, it`s a different day. Two, it`s made up. Officials decided where it should go in order to sync up time with the movement of the sun. And, three, it moves, like it did this weekend. You know how we feel about Fridays here on CNN Student News. One Pacific Island nation was willing to sacrifice a Friday and hop over the International Date Line. All it took was a little time -- about 24 hours.Samoa: a Pacific Island nation about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand just skipped an entire day. The tiny nation jumped right from Thursday to Saturday. Here`s why: it switched sides of the International Date Line at midnight last Thursday. So at 11:59 pm on Thursday, Samoa was east of the date line. And then at midnight, it switched sides. So at 12:01 am, it was west of the date line, and it was Saturday morning. The Samoan prime minister says the move puts the nation on the same side of the line as its key trading partners in New Zealand and Australia. We can now have five working days a week to continue and sustain our economic and commercial contacts with our business partners in New Zealand and Australia, China and Japan, and vice versa. Very simply before the change, we`d only have four working days out of seven days a week.In 2009, Samoa switched from driving on the right side of the road to the left to further align itself with Australia. So as of Saturday, Samoa was just three hours ahead of Sydney instead of 21 hours behind. Before we go, surfing on waves is cool.Surfing above waves is awesome. This guy calls this device a flyboard. The water comesfrom a jet ski and then goes through a hose to a platform he controls with his feet. He added the hand jets for better stability, kind of like Iron Man.He`s hoping to start selling these things later this year, but this was just a one-man demonstration. So if anyone lined up to give it a try, well, they got "hosed."We`re sure once the flyboard does go into production it`ll make a big splash, or least it`ll cause some waves in the extreme sports industry.海峡是连接两片水域的狭窄通道。

CNN英语听力2012年01月合辑(文本+翻译):20120109Last week an entire day vanished somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean. You`re going to find out why in the next 10 minutes. I`m Carl Azuz, this is CNN Student News, the Iowa caucuses, the big U.S. political story this week, yesterday, Republican presidential candidates made their final push for support. He was going to get everyone back to work. He was going to repair the nation and repair the world. Extraordinary promises -- but there`s a huge gap between the promise and the delivery. At the election level, I think I`m the only person who can take on Obama`s billion-dollar campaign and defeat him head-to-head in debates in a decisive way. This election is about stopping a President of the United States and his administration that is abusing the Constitution of this country, that is putting America on a track to bankruptcy. And, folks, we are going to take America back. What I want to do, too, is bring down the price of a gallon of gas. Gasoline was $1.79 a gallon the day that Barack Obama became president. We can get it back to that again because the United States is the number one energy resource-rich nation in the world. If liberty is the most important issue, the most important responsibility of government is to protect liberty, and not to be the policeman of the world and not to have a runaway welfare state. This president is the most dangerous commander in chief we`ve seen since Jimmy Carter. And that`s why this election is not just about the economy. It is about the security of our country, and we need a leader who understands how to make that security for each and every one of you.All right. That`s what the Republican candidates were doing yesterday. But what about the voters? What happened when they gathered for those caucuses? Tom Foreman explains how this process works in Iowa. When the Democrats do it, there is debate, horse trading, a real raucous caucus. But the Republican caucuses all around the state are much more low-key.Step one, show up. Any voter can take part as long as he or she is already a registered Republican or willing to become one at the door.Step two, listen up. After the Pledge of Allegiance, caucusgoers hear speeches from people representing the candidates. They can be from in- state or out, big names orsmall town folks. They make a quick pitch for their pick.Step three, mark it up. Pieces of paper are passed out, attendees write down a candidate`s name and the ballots are collected. It is more or less a secret vote, depending on the formality of that caucus site. And step four, count them up. The votes are added and a winner is declared. That`s about it. Delegates to the national convention will be chosen later, and they`re not bound to the results of the caucus. So it`s really more like a high-powered poll. And yet many political analysts say it really does matter.Because candidates who finish at or near the top are often given credit for having stronger organizations, more solid core support and better chances at winning in other states down the line -- Tom Foreman, CNN, Washington.Well, as you can see, it is a busy newsroom behind me. And when we recorded today`s show, the Iowa caucus results hadn`t come in yet. To get them, go to , check out the "Spotlight" section and click on "CNN Election Center." That`s where you can see the results, find out how the candidates did, and you`ll hear us discuss that tomorrow on CNN Student News.上周在太平洋失踪了一整天,而你会在接下来的10分钟找到理由。

CNN英语听力2018年01月合辑(文本+翻译):20180189First up, it`s round two in the U.S. presidential primary season as the race for the Republican nomination moves to New Hampshire. Officials in the Granite State were predicting a possible record turnout for yesterday`s primary.Around 250,000 voters were expected to cast ballots. New Hampshire holds the nation`s first primary, but two small towns there really get a jump on things. Dixville Notch and Hart`s Location open their polls just after midnight, although they don`t have that many registered voters. For example, in Dixville Notch, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman tied for first. They had two votes each. In Hart`s Location, Romney beat out U.S. Representative Ron Paul five votes to four.As the results started to come in last night, CNN projected that former Governor Romney would win the contest. He was expected to come in first, so a big question was how the other Republican candidates would finish. CNN projected that Representative Paul would come in second, and former Governor Huntsman would come in third. If you`re looking for the full results from New Hampshire, you can get them from our website. Go to the "Spotlight" section at , and click on the CNN Election Center link. We`ll have more on the New Hampshire primary in tomorrow`s show.Today`s Shoutout goes out to Mr. Anderson`s and Ms. Eggers` social studies classes at Groves Academy in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. What`s the term for financial aid that a government gives to people or groups? You know what to do. Is it a subsidy, commodity, dividend or share? You`ve got three seconds, go.That government financial aid is called a subsidy. That`s your answer, and that`s your Shoutout.Subsidies are designed to make products more affordable for people. The flip side is that if you remove a subsidy, the cost of the product will likely go up.That`s what`s happening in the African nation of Nigeria, where the government stopped giving out fuel subsidies. The price of fuel shot way up, leading many Nigerians to protest against the decision and to hold a nationwide strike.Ralitsa Vassileva has more on what`s going on in Nigeria. The streets of Africa`s biggest oil producer exploded with anger Monday over the doubling of the price of gas following the removal of a popular subsidy. A nationwide strike brought the country to a standstill. And many took to the streets, demanding the government restore the subsidy, leading to violent clashes between protesters and police with some reports of injuries and death. But President Goodluck Jonathan told Nigerians the government needs to invest the money saved to build up the country`s crumbling infrastructure. Some international experts believe the measure will help Nigerian roads economy. If they`ve been prepared to try this petroleum subsidy removal, then perhaps they`re going to push forward electricity reform, too. If they do that, Nigerian growth, instead of being 7 or 8 percent a year, it could be up at 10 or 11 percent. But for most Nigerians living on $2 a day, the price of reform is unbearable. Since removing the gas subsidy on January the 1st, the price of petrol has doubled to about 80 cents a liter, driving up the cost of most basic goods and services. And most Nigerians believe the vanishing fuel subsidies will only end up lining the pockets of politicians, not securing their country`s future -- Ralitsa Vassileva, CNN, Atlanta.Fuel is pretty expensive in Nome, Alaska, too. It sells for almost $6 a gallon there. Part of the reason is because it`s hard to get fuel into Nome. You can`t deliver it by land. The last major fuel shipment couldn`t get in by sea, either. There were heavy winter storms hammering Alaska`s west coast and made a delivery of fuel impossible. So now they`re trying something that`s never been done before: supplying fuel to Nome through sea ice. The ship in front here is a Coast Guard icebreaker. It`s clearing a way for a Russian tanker ship. The two could get to Nome as early as tomorrow. The tanker is carrying more than a million gallons of fuel. Right now Nome has enough to last through March, but officials were worried that if they waited until then, it might be even more difficult to make the delivery through the ice. From the largest U.S. state, we`re heading to the second biggest now. Texas has been suffering through a severe drought. In fact, experts say 2018 was the driest year ever for Texas. But earlier this week, parts of the state suffered from the opposite type of severe weather.Huge storms and at least two confirmed tornadoes hit the Houston area. Some spots got up to six inches of rain. You can see the effects this had on the roads. Cars got stuck in the water. Hundreds of drivers were stranded by flash floods.Fire departments were called out to rescue some of them, but in some areas, the water was actually too high for the emergency vehicles.首先,由于民主党竞选提名移到新罕布什尔州,这是在这次美国总统大选的第二轮。

CNN英语听力2012年01月合辑(文本+翻译):20120116We`re talking about anything from stone tools to complex machines. A lot of times archeologists have to dig in order to find those artifacts. Not the researchers features in our next report from Nick Glass. They`re using modern technology to try to learn about ancient cultures, and they`re making discoveries without ever disturbing the ground. Watch this. This is obviously a visible Roman monument. But our story is about the invisible, what`s below ground, and a new form of archeology, which reveals it in sensational detail.Austrian farmland lying fallow half a kilometer square, a small tractor heads towards the horizon and trundles back again. Up and down, up and down it goes. The white box at the front is ground- penetrating radar. The whole system costs $300,000.There are 16 separate antennae in there, collecting data, enough data for a 3-D image to a depth of two meters. This is instant bone-shaking archeology without the need to excavate.I was -- I was just looking on this animation of the radar data, going up and down in the subsurface, when this circular feature came up. I said, wow, this is a sensation. This perfect circle was crucial. What we are looking at is a gladiator training ring circa 100 A.D. And the tiny dot in the center was a clinching detail, a posthole. So this was the main feature of a training arena. And what do they use there? They slash their swords against it or --Yes, they draped it like an enemy, and then they trained with the different -- with the different weapons. It`s not a question of just imagining what the amphitheater and the gladiator school looked like, but of rebuilding them in virtual reality. The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute in Vienna, or LBI for short, exists, in its words, for archeological prospection and virtual archeology. And its work seems surgically precise. The gladiator school was 2,800 square meters. It served 50 gladiators and their indoor training hall had underfloor heating. All this technology was first developed in the 1950s and `60s by the military, by the oil industry. But archeologists have adapted it and refined it -- without breaking ground, they`re finding new ways of investigating the story of man. Before we go, when is a penny saved not a penny earned? When someone`s willing to pay more than 100 million pennies for it. That`s how much this one-cent piece went for at an auction recently, more than a million dollars. It came from a collection that included one example of every coin ever produced by the U.S. Two reasons this coin was so valuable. First, it was from 1793, the first year the United States started minting its own currency.Second, it was in great shape with almost no sign of wear.In fact, you could say it was in mint condition. Now you might think spending more than a million bucks for one coin doesn`t make a lot of "cents." Maybe you can`t make heads or tails out of this whole story. But if you want to hear the buyer`s explanation, it could cost you more than a penny for his thoughts. We have exhausted our "cash" of puns for today, but you can bank of us having more tomorrow. For CNN Student News,I`m Carl Azuz.我们正在谈论的是从石器工具到复杂的机器。

BBC英语听力2012年01月合辑(文本+翻译):BBC0112With months to go before the US presidential election, the White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley is stepping down. The post will be given to Jack Lew, currently in charge of the budget. From Washington, Marcus George reports.离美国总统选举还有几个月时间,如今白宫幕僚长比尔·达利准备辞职。

他的职位将移交给目前负责预算的杰克·卢。

Marcus George在华盛顿报道。

In a brief announcement, the president said Bill Daley had accomplished extraordinary work in an extraordinary year. He recited a list of critical moments in which the former banker played a crucial role. Behind the scenes, Mr Daley's resignation is said to have come as a surprise. He'd been in the job for just one year and had been expected to stay until the presidential election in November. Stepping into his shoes is Jack Lew, the current budget director. He has considerable experience in fiscal management and also served under President Clinton.奥巴马发表简短讲话,他说比尔·达利在这不平凡的一年做出了不平凡的工作。

CNN英语听力2012年01月合辑(文本+翻译):20120113First up today, President Obama announced a new plan for some changes to the U.S. military. The president`s idea is for the military to be leaner and cheaper. The country`s recent economic problems and the government`s budget concerns are part of this. And officials say they`re trying to balance America`s security needs and the country`s resources. When he announced the new strategy yesterday, President Obama said the military`s budget will keep growing over the next 10 years, it just won`t grow as much as it had been. He said his goal is to keep the military strong and the nation secure. But critics say it`s a sign that America is retreating from its global responsibilities. One Republican in Congress said the president`s strategy would mean America couldn`t guarantee support for its allies.Defense Secretary Leon Panetta -- he`s to the right of the president here -- he says while the U.S. force will be smaller, it`ll be more flexible and more technologically advanced. But the new strategy means the U.S. won`t be able to actively fight two major wars at once like it did for years in Iraq and Afghanistan.Today`s Shoutout goes out to Ms. French`s students at Mill Creek Middle School in Comstock Park, Michigan. Detroit, Michigan, is also known by what nickname? You know what to do. Is it the Charm City, Emerald City, Motor City or Windy City? You`ve got three seconds, go.Detroit is known as the Motor City because it`s the center of the U.S. auto industry. That`s your answer, and that`s your Shoutout.Looks like some good news for the Motor City. U.S. auto industry`s Big Three -- that`s General Motors, Ford and Chrysler -- are all set to report profits in 2011. That hasn`t happened for seven years. The Detroit companies will release their sales reports in the next few weeks. The U.S. auto industry took a major hit a few years ago. Ford survived on borrowed cash. GM and Chrysler needed bailouts from the government. Some serious reorganizing helped lead to this financial turnaround, but it`s not a guarantee of more profits in the future. The auto industry is one of the most competitive industries on the planet.Next up today, the race for the Republican presidential nomination. New Hampshire`s primary`s on Tuesday. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who had a narrowwin in Iowa this week, has a big lead in the polls in New Hampshire. So there are some experts who are already focusing on the next primary, and that`s going to happen in South Carolina on January 21st.Mary Snow now looks at what could be a make-or-break event.Iowa created a top tier of Republican candidates. Michele Bachmann`s now out, and others are fighting for momentum heading into New Hampshire. But the head of South Carolina`s Republican Party predicts his state will provide the next real make-or- break moment. The Iowa winner hadn`t always been the nominee. The New Hampshire winner hadn`t always been the nominee. But since 1980, we have picked the eventual nominee. And so I believe this is where the race really starts, and I think this is where it`s going to be decided, too.Case in point: the 2008 Republican primary, where Mike Huckabee won Iowa with the help of evangelicals. But John McCain eventually became the party`s nominee. Like Iowa, the Christian Right has a heavy influence in South Carolina, but there are some key differences among voters there. In 2008, 60 percent of South Carolina`s Republican primary voters were evangelicals or born-again Christians. Of the 40 percent not in that category, they favored John McCain over Mike Huckabee, leading McCain to win the state.Political watchers say social issues are a motivating force for evangelicals in South Carolina, but not a sole factor.Simply saying I`m an evangelical is not enough to win them over. You have to say, "I`m the evangelical candidate," or I`m a moral candidate. I am concerned about the social issue you`re concerned with, but I`m also concerned about the debt and the deficit.Along with fiscal conservatives, there`s also a large number of active and retired military personnel living in South Carolina. And a win here is seen as key to winning the South. If you can appeal to the conservatives in South Carolina, if you can win in the heat and occasional dirty politicking of South Carolina, then you`re the type of candidate who has the mettle to move on. It does often provide a firewall. One other thing to watch in South Carolina is the issue of jobs and the economy. Unlike Iowa and New Hampshire, where the unemployment rate is below the national average, South Carolina`s unemployment rate is 9.9 percent -- Mary Snow, CNN, New York今天的首要节目是总统奥巴马宣布了一项新的计划,这就是针对美国军队的一些变化。
